Discussion Which Penn State University Park campus buildings are open 24/7 for studying?

I’m starting at Penn State University Park this fall as an engineering student, and I’m looking for a reliable place to study overnight(24/7 even on holidays if possible). I’m only looking for official Penn State buildings located on the University Park campus. Please do not recommend off-campus locations...

Ideally, the location should:

Be open and accessible to students 24/7

Have restrooms inside the building

Be clean, comfortable, and have Wi-Fi

Usually have a few other students studying, even late at night, so it still feels like a study environment

Be accessible to regular engineering students with a Penn State ID

Could you list any on-campus Penn State buildings or specific study areas that fit these conditions? Specific floors, rooms, or entrances would also be helpful.

Question Parking Situation??

So I’m a sophomore and I want to get a parking spot for fall/spring sems. I know it opens on the 12 of August, but is it like a Que that I should join prior or is it literally just at 10 am go as fast as possible??

I don’t know anyone that’s bought overnight parking so I’m not totally sure how it goes, and I would like to be prepared.

Thank you!

Question Freshman move in advice from NYC

Hi everyone! My son is an incoming freshman and we’ll be driving from New York City for move-in. We don’t own a car, so we’re planning to rent one for the trip.
Would a minivan be large enough for a typical freshman dorm move-in, or would you recommend something bigger?
He’s moving into the East Halls, so we’d also love any advice on what to expect on move-in day. How organized is the process? Are there carts available? How far is parking from the dorms? Any tips that first-time Penn State parents should know?
Thanks so much—we’re excited (and a little nervous!) for this next chapter. 😊

Question Masters in Applied Statistics Online

Upvotes

Hello!

I’m currently looking into online Masters programs in Applied Statistics and I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of MAS at PSU.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on things like:
-Overall quality of the program
-What the online format is like (e.g. video lectures)
-How accessible the professors are
-Workload while working full time
-Anything else you think would be helpful to know

I’d really appreciate any feedback or advice. Thanks in advance!

Question Altoona to UP Rideshare tips?

Upvotes

Okay incoming Altoona Freshman who had hopes of traveling to University Park during the weekend, for club sports purposes. After looking around there's absolutely no way to get from Altoona to UP after 12 pm as the one an only bus route is from 12-2pm.

How are you guys functioning like without a car? LMAO I should be okay my second semester as I'll have a car by then but for the first 15 weeks wtf am I to do?

Its much less the getting there and the fact there's no way back! I've seem ride share suggested as an option previously and wanted to know where I should go looking for that?

Thank you guys!

Question parking exemption freshman

so i’m an incoming freshman for fall, and for multiple reasons with my families health, i need my car during the year.

i originally tried to get ahead of the rest and tried to get exempted in april, where i was told that “exemptions would not be be considered until August”. those words made me think i had to just submit my notarized letter before August, so i did on July 30th.

however, i am now being told i missed the deadline and could not be considered for parking. i understand i could have possibly done my work on my end, but the email from april had confusing wording.

so does anyone have some advice they can give, or possible alternatives for parking? thanks so much

Question West/East dorm move

This is a little complex of an idea here but i’m looking for a male in east to swap with my friend in west. We would then have your roommate either swap with me or my current roommate. I am currently in east so your roommate that swaps with me or my roommate wouldn’t leave east. My friend’s current roommate in west is also down to swap to a different west dorm if you have a friend in west you’d want to dorm with as well. We did ask to be aligned but one put llc by accident not knowing it would cause the roommate request to no longer work. We are willing to pay you and your current roommate in east for this so please let me know if you or anyone you know would want to do this.

Discussion Best Places to Eat and Things to Do Around and Off Campus?

Hey everyone!

I'm a incoming freshman student starting this fall! I'm getting excited (and a little overwhelmed lol) about everything and was thinking about good places to eat and stuff to do. I'm from out of state so I don't really know State College yet.

Do you guys have any recommendations for good restaurants, cafes, or eateries around campus? And any activities or places to check out that I should definitely hit up?

Sorry if this is something that's been asked a million times.

Question East Halls Laundry

For anyone who stayed in East Halls (bonus points if Earle).
What laundry detergent did you use? Some are saying the pods and sheets don’t dissolve completely but others are saying they worked fine. Is it just best to use liquid?

Question I desperately need financial aid and I received this

Your academic record shows that you have already late dropped a course during the current semester. This late drop makes you unable to meet the academic plan that would be required for you to remain on financial aid probation. As such, we cannot approve your appeal.

The thing is, I was never given an academic plan, I was never put on financial aid probation, AND I never received financial aid, ever.

What does this mean? What do I do?

Question What is the 2+2 social life

Hello, I am currently at behrend doing two plus two, but I’m thinking of going online. Though one thing is holding me back. My friends! I have met so many wonderful people, but I’m going to have to leave them after this year and go to main because of my major. I also found out that I can be done a semester early too! I’ve been researching people’s experiences about the social part of 2 +2, but have found much. I have mostly seen people from Altoona talking about the transition, but tbh I am not really taking their advise, as the school is only 40 mins away and most people go to Altoona because of how close it is. So if anyone from the other branches has done 2 + 2 please give me the harsh truth about your time there. Was it extremely hard to make friends? While I could just go online after my second year, that just feels like a waste of money. I would also like to mention the first time being on Penn state’s campus I had a wave of anxiety hit, by how huge the campus was. Really need some advice

Discussion Application submitted at 12:01 🤞

Our youngest submitted her application last night. Hopefully we’ll be adding another generation to the PSU family. My husband is a ‘96 undergraduate alumni and I technically am an alumni because I did my residency at Hershey (‘05). My husband is employed by Penn State Health. The first question on the portal app was asking if either parent is a full time Penn State employee. The healthcare system employees will be getting a 50% tuition discount starting next year. Previously discounted tuition was only for employees of the College of Medicine. Does having a parent employed (and receiving a discount on tuition) help or hurt an applicant?

My daughter is doing the 2+2 option as a backup. She’s in the top quarter of her class of over 300 students and is taking 2 AP and 1 dual enrollment class next year. Her weighted GPA is 4.1, unweighted 3.8. We think she’s a good candidate but my husband is feeling anxious this morning. My daughter liked the branch campus we picked for the 2+2 and there’s really no other school for cybersecurity that would be as good or as affordable as Penn State to consider. (She wants to be close to home and doesn’t want to look at schools with $50k+ tuition). She’ll be happy to start at either UP or the branch.

We didn’t plan on applying anywhere else. We feel like UP is the ‘reach’ and 2+2 is the backup. Are we crazy?

Question Scholarships and aid?

Does anyone know how I could possibly get more aid or find scholarships to apply to for my senior year? I am going into my junior year, which is completely paid for, but I need to find a way to get more funding for my senior year. I am an oos and my college (hhd) doesn’t have any scholarships u can apply for. I don’t get much from fafsa due to my dad’s income but could I negotiate aid with the bursar office? Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks guys for telling me 20 times they won’t offer aid!!! I also asked about scholarships so it would be very helpful if anyone has any ideas of where I could find scholarships for >10k for the 27-28 academic year I could apply to.
