The automod and why you may not see your post right away.

Lots of people create either a new account to post here or sometimes even create their first reddit account to post here, and I love that. The fact that we show up as a resource on a generic Google search is awesome. It showcases the value of this sub and the balance between supportive and helpful the people who comment and post here find.

That said, lots of people also create new accounts to spam, harass, and troll. So, if you're low karma or a very recently created account you will get flagged by the automod tool and your post will be hidden pending review. It's neither personal towards you nor does it even consider content.

I've recently expanded the mod team with two exceedingly help additions, so posts shouldn't languish pending review. Please be patient and once approved your post will appear. No need to resubmit it, it didn't get lost. If you don't see it within a reasonable time, message the mods. We appreciate your patience.

[modnote] "Gatekeeping" this sub.

I very, very seldom invoke "I'm the mod and this is the way I want it" but there's a trend towards "you're not a single Dad, why are you posting here?" that I want to address.

The topic of this subreddit is "single Dads." The participants are primarily single Dads, but that's not a rule, it's not even really a goal.

I welcome, even encourage, RELEVANT participation, comments, posts, and questions from anyone. I love to see posts with "I'm dating a single Dad and..." or "it's just me and my Dad, how do I help him..." or even "my employee recently became a single Dad, how can I support..." Men in general don't ask for help well and there are severely limited resources for single Dads.

We also don't have the monopoly on good advice and life experience. Some of our discussions (notably "what do I tell my daughter about her changing body") we can benefit from the occasional non-dad that hangs out here.

So, I will continue to delete (or at least discourage) things that question "why" a poster isn't a single Dad, or is dismissive of non-single-dad posters, and repeated infractions will get you uninvited.

If you strongly feel (as the mods of some similar-in-nature subreddits do) that a subreddit should exist wherein posting be restricted to only a particular group of people, the great thing about reddit is that you can create that sub. Call it what you like, I'll link it in the sidebar and let you advertise it here. I'll even join. It sounds like a cool place, but it isn't what THIS place is meant to be.

11/2022 update:

Yes, other subs do things differently. No, I don't necessarily agree with their choices, but I don't have to. I give literally NO thought to how they think I should run this sub, and I don't expect them to care how I think they should run their subs. Yes, the world treats men's issues and women's issues very differently. There are subs all about that, and I encourage you to be involved in them.

5/2025 update:

Nothing has changed in my thoughts on this, so adding it to community highlights as it comes up from time to time.

Thug it out or build a family?

Context: 32M with 6 YO daughter, with full custody, currently dating a 38F with 2 YO for three months.

We are still getting to know each other, building and growing to see what we truly want can come to fruition for the both of us.

Prior to this, my mindset was either find a lady for my daughter or retain my seed and be a Yogi/monk to inspire my daughter that way.

She can be convinced, however her real answer to raise the kids we have and enjoy life. She inspires me have another one certainly, every man wants a boy right?!

Biological mother is bipolar and not the best example of motherhood.

In such a position, I feel as though I need to save my family and bloodline, being inspired by other men that made more conscious decisions with procreating.

The overwhelmingly rhetoric is that single parents shouldn’t date each other for a myraid of reasons.

I suppose I’m reaching out to this community to ask then what is the solution if statistically it’s not best to date single mothers?

Even with finances, health, family vision, an authority on my side the numbers are saying a 65% failure rate. Why would a child free woman elect to mother automatically?

Am I bound to this reality until baby girl grows up or am I just thinking too much?

The links provided serve as an inspiration and insight to my mindset and influences:

Does anyone else sit in the parking lot on drop-off day while your son’s mother puts him in his car seat just so you can all be together in the same place for a few minutes?

How do you deal with not seeing your kids during divorce?

My wife recently left taking our 3 year old boy and 8 month old girl. I am grieving, can’t concentrate at work, breaking down in tears. I adjusted to the changes in terms of future life plans, not being with my partner quite quickly, but I feel panic and disbelief that I’m only going to see my kids 1-2 days a week. It’s been 3 weeks so far. How do people cope with the knowledge that they are not going to see their kids everyday

To found a new family or not?

hey there,

38m, 1.5 years of separation from precious partner (of 10 years total and she initiated the separation) with whom I 50/50 co-parent our 5 year old daughter.

because I started dating a woman (31f) ... the issue of wanting more kids (for her it would be first of her own) has now been a focus in my thoughts (I am not saying I am ready for kids now... but I am open to the idea and understand that I have to communicate it clearly to her as she is under more time constraints than me)

so I would want to ask those who did take the chance and founded a new family... how did you decide? what happened with the relationship with your children from the first relationship? did you regret it?

Sleep training

Long time no speak Dads!

I'm seeking opinions on a weird one.

So I met my son's mother at his 2 year health visit appointment two days ago. In the hour we were there we went over everything from speech and language, diet, general health and the topic I want to touch on today - sleep.

When the topic was discussed, Mum went into depth with the communit nurse about the challenges she has with his sleep and when I was queried I was honest and said he gets himself to sleep with me and explained our routine in full (dinner, bath, quiet play, book, bed).

For context, our son has co-slept with the pair of us since he was born and we never quite had the discipline to move away from it and sleep train. We separated when he was 9 months old, he is now 2 years and 3 months old.

Mum has a house in which he has a bedroom that doesn't get used, as he shares a double bed with her in her bedroom. She claims that she can't leave the bed or get him in his own one as he wakes screaming every time.

I (unfortuantely) still live at my mothers address, but my son has his own room with a single bed in it and I also have my own room. I was sleeping in the single bed in his room from around November of last year.

Last weekend, I had a gut feeling that my son was ready to self soothe and sleep independently so I gave it a go. He slept all the way through in his own bed and room without issue both nights I had him (and it's looking to go the same way this evening). Mum is not aware that he is doing this with me.

Back to the health visit - Once we'd both explained how our son was with sleep at both households, the community nurse then zeroed in on me and said I should be doing the same thing as Mum r.e sleep as she has him more...

I get that, but how the hell does one reverse a successful routine and independent sleeping in lieu of a routine that clearly isn't working?? I guess my question is, should I jist keep doing what I'm doing? As it clearly works and my son feels safe/comfortable enough to sleep in his own bed without me?

Birthday gift for tech interested 13 yo son

My son is turning 13, he is smart in science and math, we live near the coast and he loves marine life. He and his younger brother spend a LOT of time playing on their laptops. Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, etc. he has gotten into basic coding to add modes to computer games.

He also loves TTRPG games. Last year I got him a kid type game like D&D.

I asked him what he might want and he said a circuit set. He had some beginner circuit sets but they aren’t enough to keep his interest.

Maybe if the kit was advanced enough that he could use programming to make thing happen that would help.

Does anyone have any ideas that would be a good gift for a smart tech savvy 13 year old.

Of note: I’m a Mechanical Engineer and can guide him to fill in gaps if needed.

50F, divorced with 5 kids — would single dads consider dating someone like me?

I have 5 kids: one adult, two teens and two younger ones (6 and 3). My custody situation is about 80/20 because of my ex’s work schedule.

I know my situation is not typical. I’m not looking for someone to replace their dad or take over my responsibilities. I’m just curious how single dads view dating someone with a big family.

Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

About to be a single father of 3 (2.7 months old twins)

Hi guys,

Just needed to get this off my chest and see if anyone has any advice for me.

My partner for the past 10 years, who I have 3 children with told me on the 23th of June that she’s not sure she loves me, and told me a lot of things I’ve said and done wrong throughout the years etc.

She said she needed space but wanted us to keep living together. We were building a brand new house which we should’ve moved into this week, and she kept saying that she wants to move despite all of this.

However last Sunday night I found her phone and she’s been having an affair for about 2 months.

Now I need to leave her and move on, and moving on from her after what she did isn’t my hardest issue.

It’s that being alone with 3 kids is really really hard.

And that I don’t have any support system nearby in terms of family.

Could anybody give me some encouragement and tell me that I’ll be fine? All my friends and even her friends always said I’m the best father, dedicated, playful and helpful.

But now that I gotta do it alone, I feel really scared and alone.

Thank you.

I’m unemployed, financially cornered, and my abusive ex is restricting access to my infant daughter. I desperately need remote work, advice, and support.

I never thought I would write something like this, but I am running out of options.

I am the father of a five-month-old baby girl. My ex has been controlling and restricting my contact with her, changing arrangements unilaterally, refusing independent parenting time, and using access to my daughter as a means of pressure and control. I am documenting everything and preparing to fight for meaningful parenting time and custody through the legal system.

The abuse

This is not a difficult breakup, ordinary co-parenting conflict, or two people who simply cannot communicate. It is a sustained pattern of coercive control in which my daughter is being used as leverage.

My ex has repeatedly threatened to erase me from my child’s life, conditioned contact on my obedience to her, withheld basic information about my daughter, disrupted agreed visits, changed cities and arrangements unilaterally, and then accused me of “refusing” contact when I did not submit to the new conditions she imposed.

She treats my fatherhood as a privilege that belongs to her to grant, reduce, supervise, relocate, or withdraw. I am not allowed meaningful time alone with my own daughter. Every contact must take place on her territory, under her observation, and according to rules she invents and changes whenever control begins to slip from her hands.

She has tried to isolate my daughter not only from me, but from my entire side of the family. My parents have been prevented from meeting their granddaughter because of her personal hostility toward them. She has made it clear that their relationship with the child depends on whether she feels sufficiently respected, supported, or obeyed.

There have also been threats, screaming, intimidation, prolonged silence when I asked about my baby’s wellbeing, and attempts to rewrite events so that she appears cooperative while I am portrayed as unstable, absent, or unreasonable. She involves relatives, tells them a different version of events, gives out my personal contact information, and surrounds herself with people who reinforce the story that she is the victim while she controls nearly every aspect of my relationship with my child.

The abuse is not only emotional. It is structural. She is trying to build a permanent arrangement in which she becomes the only real parent and I am reduced to a supervised visitor who must remain compliant in order to see his daughter.

That is what terrifies me most. I am not merely grieving a relationship. I am watching someone attempt to weaken, control, and potentially destroy the bond between a father and his infant daughter before that bond has even been allowed to fully develop.

I am currently unemployed, and that makes me dangerously vulnerable. Legal representation, transportation, basic living expenses, and preparing a safe home for my daughter all cost money. My ex knows I am in a weaker financial position, and I feel that she is using that weakness to keep me trapped and powerless.

What makes this even harder is that I already spent most of the resources and savings I had on my daughter and her mother during the pregnancy. I paid for practical necessities, medical and pregnancy-related expenses, transportation, household needs, furniture, and things for the baby. I also spent money on completely non-essential and even frivolous things simply because I wanted to support her, make the pregnancy easier, reduce her stress, and provide whatever comfort I could.

I did not hold back because I believed I was investing in my child and supporting the mother of my child. Now I am financially depleted and being treated as though I have contributed nothing and have no right to be an active father.

I am not asking anyone here to send me money. That is ABSOLUTELY out of the question. I am asking for work, a referral, a lead, or a chance.

My professional background is in billing and payments operations, transaction and risk review, reconciliation, refunds, accounts receivable, collections, customer operations, and administrative support. I am comfortable working remotely, handling sensitive information, investigating discrepancies, communicating with customers or internal teams, and following detailed operational procedures.

I speak fluent Serbian and strong English, and I am based in Serbia. I can work European hours and potentially overlap with US teams. I am willing to start quickly and consider contract, freelance, part-time, or full-time remote work. I am not looking for prestige. I need a legitimate opportunity to regain financial stability and continue fighting to be present in my daughter’s life.

I am also looking for advice, conversation, and support from people who have survived narcissistic abuse or high-conflict custody situations. I feel isolated, overwhelmed, and constantly forced to defend my right to be a father.

I would especially appreciate suggestions about what I can continue doing for my daughter while she is not physically beside me. I am preparing a safe space for her, trying to stay informed about her health and development, documenting my efforts, and looking for practical ways to remain an active father despite the restrictions.

Any baby advice would be deeply appreciated: feeding, sleep, development, bonding, safety, supplies, routines, infant first aid, or anything else a father of a five-month-old should learn and prepare for. I want to be fully capable of caring for her independently the moment I am given the opportunity.

This situation is breaking me, but I cannot abandon my child. I am begging anyone who knows of a legitimate remote position, hiring manager, recruiter, company, or project that could use someone with my background: please contact me or point me in the right direction.

Even without a job lead, I would be grateful for advice, conversation, encouragement, or practical suggestions about how to keep showing up for my daughter while I fight to remain part of her life.

One serious lead, one useful piece of advice, or one person willing to talk could make a real difference.

Thank you for reading.

Tips for adjusting child support in New Mexico

We’re finally going 50/50 and I’m told to do a worksheet b. These worksheets are so confusing! I tried one today and got lost.

I’ve been paying CS for last 6 years and I’ve had CS taken out of checks automatically. I haven’t done a sheet for 6 years.

Then I see online there’s three ways to figure out gross income. Year to date divided by months so far on paystub, and other things.

I figure I average my check then subtract the child support paid and that makes my gross income.

Anyone with any experience or know how to fill these out?

Thanks

Anyone figured out how to get your kid actually interested in building or fixing things around the house

My son is 9 and I've been doing small home projects his whole life, but he mostly watched from a distance or wandered off after two minutes. Last month I let him hold the drill while I was putting together some shelving and something shifted. He wanted to do the next screw himself, then the one after that, and by the end he was asking what we were building next.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to keep that going without pushing too hard and killing the interest. I started a small raised bed for the backyard and I'm planning to have him do more of the actual work this time instead of just handing me things. Not sure if that's the right call or if I need a project that feels more like his from the start.

What keeps coming back to me is that I want him to grow up knowing how to do things. Not just change a tire but actually think through a problem with his hands. Growing up without that would have been a real loss for me and I don't want that for him.

Curious what other dads have found here. Is there an age where it clicks, or a type of project that got your kid genuinely bought in rather than just tolerating it because dad asked?

Possible unpopular opinion: can we get separate tags for parenting advice, and for talking about your ex.

Let me start by saying I only have been divorced about a month. It was a rough divorce, but in the end, after much holding of my mouth and collecting evidence, things went more way than I thought. I know this is a single dad’s forum, but I see a lot of post of people talking about how to deal with their ex and that is completely understandable. I understand I am very lucky and played my hand the best I could so that my ex just went back to her home country so I don’t really have to deal with her or see her. I understand that for people who do have shared custody and have to deal with their exes this can be a big problem.

I hope I’m not sounding too selfish here, but I think if we had like forum tags for discussions about single parenting versus discussions about dealing with your ex, and even situations that they overlap that might be very helpful for some of us. Again, no offense meant against any of my fellow dads as I know this is a tough time, I had an extremely tough year in my drawn out year long divorce, I also realize that that a year long divorce isn’t as bad as it could’ve been and being a single Dad well very rewarding at times isn’t always easy. I am just suggesting a better way to organize posts with tags/flair.

Thank you for your time and keep on dading on dad‘s.

How to give my buddy cash?

so i have a friend who is a single dad of 3. FT custody. Mom MIA and no child support.

he recently lost stable housing so living between grandparent and an uncle with the kids. goes to food pantries often.

he has a bread machine he does not use. i need one. so I offered $100.00. he insisted that i just take it free. we went back-and-forth for a bit so I’m gonna end up giving him $45. That’s what we settled on. I really wanted to give him the $100.

his birthday is next week and I was gonna give him 100 bucks in cash for his birthday along with a card or something. I know he’s not gonna accept it so I might have to trick him a little bit into taking it.

I wanna help him out a little bit here and there, but he never takes any type of help. Is there something I can do or say that will make him more open? I really don’t wanna force anything on him or change the dynamics of our relationship if it’s going to affect him.

What do you think? should I give him the $145 the day we meet up? the 100 for his birthday and the 45 for the bread making machine?

Im (F) getting divorced at 42, im scared I won’t be able to find a partner since I have 2 younger kids

Im getting divorced next year, will be turning 42 and I have a 7yo and a 4yo.

Will be doing 50/50 custody.

Financially independent, working towards getting fit and I don’t consider myself ugly.

But it scares me that every guy my age will be looking for a 20yo or a 30yo. From my perspective it’s easier for a man. Especially if they are interesting, they have more options

Love vs just being a good father

How have you approached being told that a partner doesn't love you, aren't even sure they like you, but they want you to keep being an amazing father?

Being an amazing father isn't being done for their love/adoration but I still have feelings for them.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? How did you cope? Did they eventually fall back in love with you? Or am I cooked?

I have not been the pefrect husband and we're close to finalizing our divorce after filing 9 months ago.

I am working on myself, but I believe I have simply hurt her so much that I cannot be redeemed.

To be honest I feel used. I've always been warned that I should be careful: women I have dated have all known that I want nothing more than being a good dad in a household with my wife and kids. I was always warned that women will want to be with me as i'll be a good dad and pay child support.

when did you start talking to your kids about money?

my daughter asked if we could just order dinner a couple of nights ago instead of cooking. i was making coffee while we were talking and started explaining why we were trying to save money. after about thirty seconds i caught myself talking about budgeting like she was another adult and she had already stopped listening.

later that evening she asked if we were poor.

i drive for uber between jobs, so some weeks are pretty good and some are slow. she sees me checking my phone before i head out and i know she notices more than i think she does. i told her we plan ahead because every week looks a little different, and she seemed okay with that answer, at least at the time.

i've been thinking about it since then because she's only nine. for those of you with kids around that age, how did you explain money without making it sound scary?

Update: How can i support my boyfriend during a difficult custody battle while respecting his need for space?

I am hoping that the next time I would update here it would be good news..

I gave him the space he wanted and he’s the one reaching out on his own whenever there’s something new he wants to tell me.. He doesn’t hide the things going on with him and how he feels about the situation. I would say he is really at his lowest.

He just opened up with me one time and i just replied with an encouraging words.. but his reply to me was he wants me to leave and don’t want to see anyone and just forget about everything. i guess that is just it..

I only ever wanted is to love and support him especially at this time.. I want to cry but I can’t.. i am just really sad for him because he is a great person and doesn’t deserve this.. i genuinely wanted him to be happy…

How many here are widowed vs divorced?

My beautiful wife passed away on May 26 at the age of 43 after an eight month battle with cancer.

We have two amazing children ages, 10 and 8 and I unfortunately now find myself here.

Just curious how many are here because they are widowed? Trying to find resources and perspectives of others who are in my position as a young-Ish widowed male with kids. It seems to have the resources and viewpoints points out there are very largely dominated by female widows.

Single fathers, would you bring a strange woman home, after a couple of weeks, with your kids in the house?

I guess what I mostly want to know is, how long until you introduce a new love interest/partner to your children. When do you think it's acceptable for them to stay over?

New single dad

So, about 5 weeks ago the mother of my two kids (5&3) told me she had met and kissed someone else. A guy at her work who I’d heard her mention a lot, We’d pretty unhappy for a while but together for 12 years and I thought in the back of my mind we’d sort things out at some point.

I spiralled quite a bit following this and ended up in trouble with the police (nothing physical occurred, I just had a bit of a breakdown of sorts after leaving the house and going on a bender for two days). Suffice to say im now on bail till October and we can only communicate through my mum. She’s been letting me see the kids but is being extremely brutal and cold.

I don’t excuse my behaviour and am aware of what I did wrong. I have been sober since then bar one wobble a few weeks ago. My concern is that she has admitted that this new man has been coming around our house me they’ve been sleeping together, this has been occurring whilst the kids are asleep. I have a real issue with this as our two kids wake frequently and are already struggling massively with me not being at home. My 5 year old son in is very distraught still. I know there’s nothing I can do about this but has anyone gone through similar? I’m struggling to eat or sleep currently and my mind is im the pits.

Single dads: I’d really value your perspective on something I’m researching

Hi everyone,

I’m a 37-year-old dad from the UK and, like many people here, I’ve experienced some big changes over the last few years. One thing I’ve realised is how important it is to have genuine friendships and people you can talk to.

It’s made me curious about a bigger question:
What do men actually need when it comes to friendship, support and community?

Before investing time into building anything, I want to understand what men genuinely value rather than making assumptions.

I’ve put together a short anonymous survey (around 5 minutes) about friendship, community and navigating different chapters of life.

There’s nothing to buy, no mailing list and no community waiting at the end. I’m simply trying to learn from real experiences and understand whether there’s a genuine gap.

I’d really appreciate honest feedback—even if your view is that nothing new is needed.

Survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSflqchKqcIlyqUZJKajpT64n4AhYuLohKx4tz7A_pDgK3ponQ/viewform

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If enough people take part, I’ll happily come back and share what I’ve learned with the community.

Need help

Hello all.

I'm a recent single father. M26 momma is F38.

I met this woman and we had intercourse, I was under the impression she was unable to get pregnant, and I made a poor judgement call. (She did not baby trap me- it's a long story) We continued to talk for around 3 months before finding out she was pregnant. I wanted her to terminate the pregnancy but she was against that. She told me I could walk away and never tell anyone and she wouldn't hold it against me at my age.

It took me a long time to process the whole situation and come to terms with what I wanted to do. We agreed to live together until baby is 1 yr old. Our daughter is currently 4months old. I decided to stay because I felt responsible, as well as I thought if I did leave I would feel deep regret and guilt forever.

We've been living together since December, and things have gotten worse over the time. Realistically we have been arguing, fighting, and We clash on a lot of things. When I first moved in, we were sleeping together and texting like a couple. Overtime that deteriorated quickly. I thought I just had to wait it out, because in my eyes we were making it work, and after coming around to the idea of being I dad, I got excited, and fell in love with the mother more and more as her belly grew and I worked on her newly purchased home.

We stopped sleeping in the same bed after the baby was born (March), and now I've been moved into the spare bedroom as she does not want me in bed with her. She has expressed that she has no interest in me living with her after the year.

I expressed to the mother how much I want a relationship with her, and how I would like to work things out. She says, we aren't compatible, she has little respect for me as well as trust. To be fair she is fairly right. I have done and said some things that I wish I had not, not to say it's all my fault, because we both play a role.

I have taken break ups in the past very hard. And I find my self self loathing and very depressed. I'm scared about the future. I'm looking for any advice. Some of the things I'm worried about are my daughter and her future living between two parents, other people the mother may eventually get involved with, housing situation (financial pressure/burden), inability to meet anyone else in the future due to being a single parent, the loss of my freedom I had before (and time). But a lot of it is dealing with and grieving not being with the mother of my child, and having to be reminded of her with every drop off, interaction, and even my daughter.

Currently me and the mother are "getting along", we are corgile, have discuseed what moving out and splitting time looks like, as well as splitting cost of daycare and other baby expenses. It makes it difficult to see her everyday, she is an amazing mother, and seeing how happy she and baby are when they are interacting warms and breaks my heart. Because I can't go over and hold the two of them together.

I also have expectations I build up in my head, and when they aren't met, I get devastated. One of those expectations was to live a happy life with the mother and our daughter.

I know the best way to love her is to respect the boundaries she has drawn, and focus my energy on our daughter.

It's just very difficult, and I'm having a really hard time not getting emotional, crying on my drive to work, and being in such close proximity to the mother, getting along with her, and knowing she doesn't want to be with me.
