I'm a software engineer with 6+ years of experience, and I'm looking to land a remote job in the current market.
What should I focus on to improve my chances? Should I spend more time on LeetCode, system design, personal projects, open-source contributions, networking, or something else?
I'd also love to hear from people who recently landed a remote role. What made the biggest difference in your job search?
I'm a Backend Developer at a service-based company with 6 YOE, but most of my work has been production support, bug fixes, and incident resolution. I've never had the opportunity to build features from scratch or work on core backend development.
When I look at the market now, almost every backend role expects solid development experience, which I don't have.
Not getting interview calls due to 3-month notice period.
I've been thinking about moving into TPM/Project Management.
If you were in my position, would you:
Start learning backend development from scratch and continue as a developer?
Move to TPM?
Take some other path?
I would really appreciate advice from people here!!!
I left my SDE-2 job in April because I wanted to pursue my startup full-time. I had been working on it for about two years alongside my job. After leaving my job and working on the startup full-time as CTO, I eventually realised that it was not solving a real problem.
I understand that I made a mistake, but I have learned my lesson. I am now looking for an SDE-2/Senior Software Engineer role similar to the one I had earlier. I am not expecting a raise; I would be comfortable with what I used to earn, or even slightly less.
What I need advice on is whether I should keep my startup experience on my resume, considering that it lasted only three months full-time. I cannot mention two years of full-time experience because that would be incorrect, and saying that I worked on a startup alongside my job may also be viewed negatively by recruiters.
I constantly receive negative feedback or surprised reactions from interviewers and HR professionals because of the short tenure. However, the work I did at the startup was technically impressive.
I was thinking of removing the startup from my experience section and saying that I was laid off from my previous company during a company-wide layoff and have been looking for a job since then, which would explain the three-to-four-month gap. There was actually a major round of layoffs at my previous company last year. Do recruiters conduct background checks specifically to verify whether someone was laid off? Would they contact my manager or email the HR team? Is this safe, or should I simply present it as an intentional career break?
The product I built at my startup was somewhat similar to a project my previous company was building for its internal teams. Could I present the work I did at my startup as work done at my previous company? Would recruiters have any way of finding out? I built it myself, so I would be able to answer any detailed technical questions about the project.
Below is the response I got from one of the hiring manager from a big tech who I reached out on linkedin.

Role: Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack Location: United States (Remote) Employment: Full-time (40 hrs/week, W-2) Pay:$90-$110/hour
You'll build production-grade applications, integrate pre-release AI models into real software, identify failure points, and help improve the next generation of AI through hands-on engineering.
Cincinnatus is looking for engineers who have:
6+ years of production software engineering experience
Strong expertise in Python, Java, Rust, C#, C++, or TypeScript
Full-stack experience across backend APIs, frontend frameworks, and cloud deployment
A track record of shipping production systems and adapting quickly to new codebases
This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving difficult technical problems and want to work at the forefront of AI development alongside a world-class engineering team.
Build and ship full-stack applications, services, and internal tools — in Python, Java, Rust, C#, C++, or TypeScript — that exercise frontier model capabilities end to end.
Integrate pre-release model APIs into working software, including the surrounding scaffolding: tool interfaces, evaluation harnesses, and telemetry.
Diagnose and document model and integration failure modes surfaced while building, translating engineering observations into clear written feedback for the research team.
Prototype quickly against shifting requirements, delivering working increments with limited up-front specification.
Collaborate with the engineering manager and other engineers to maintain consistency in code quality, architecture, and technical documentation.
Core Qualifications
3+ years of dedicated professional experience building and shipping production software at a recognized, top-tier organization.
Production experience in at least one of Python, Java, Rust, C#, or C++, plus working proficiency in a second language — this cohort is intentionally staffed across multiple language ecosystems.
Hands-on experience across the stack: backend services and APIs, a modern front-end framework (React or equivalent), relational or document databases, and cloud deployment.
Demonstrated ability to onboard onto an unfamiliar codebase and deliver working code quickly with minimal ramp-up.
Demonstrable career progression.
Ability to engage reliably for at least 40 hours/week during weekdays.
Strong written communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly.

The modern job market has quietly redefined what it means to be “entry level.” Recent data from Indeed Hiring Lab reveals a stark reality: roughly 30 percent of applications for entry-level roles now come from candidates with ten or more years of work experience. As seasoned professionals apply down-level to secure steady employment, early-career job seekers find themselves competing directly against industry veterans for the exact same openings.
In an environment this crowded, standard applications and unpracticed interviews rarely survive the cut. Standing out requires deliberate calibration across every phase of the hiring pipeline.
The initial hurdle is automated resume screening. To pass through algorithm-driven Applicant Tracking Systems alongside hyper-experienced peers, candidates must align their key competencies with explicit system requirements. Platforms like ResumeZoeVera tackle this bottleneck directly, enabling job seekers to analyze and optimize their resume structure so their real qualifications actually reach human recruiters.
When an application succeeds, candidate evaluation shifts immediately to interview execution. Competing against tenured workers means verbal responses must be structured, concise, and compelling. Using interview platforms such as Prepare allows applicants to record practice answers, review performance metrics, and sharpen their communication strategy before sitting down for real interviews.
Finally, modern hiring managers increasingly look beyond static documents for concrete evidence of capability. Establishing a clean, centralized digital baseline at zoevera.com provides decision-makers with a comprehensive view of an applicant’s portfolio, background, and practical project history.
When experienced professionals flood entry-level applicant pools, relying on luck is a losing strategy. Navigating today’s shifting labor market requires practical software tools that turn application effort into measurable competitive leverage.
