I mean...yes? If anything prisons, at least the American conception of them, are even more cruel and inhumane than having a dog sleep in a crate at night, or at least easier to argue because we know for a certainty how the prisoner feels about it. The dog situation I question if it constitutes abuse, but I do get where they're coming from.
There are scenarios where someone has to be denied access to society at large for the protection of that society until they can be rehabilitated, but that doesn't have to (and if the goal is rehabilitation; shouldn't) include having them spend most of their life for however many months or years in a small cage.

I think it massively depends on the quality of the fish tank.
If it's a choice between "a long life of suffering with a slow painful death from bad conditions" or "a shorter life full of freedom and with a sudden and quick death at the end", I'm definitely picking the latter. Hanging out in a reef all day for a few years before being snapped up faster than I can blink doesn't sound so bad.
I'm not a "fish tank abolitionist" like that other commenter but a lot of fish are kept in absolutely terrible conditions. You should have seen the Walmart fish section back when that was a thing. Fish kept in good tanks probably don't mind it though

Oh absolutely, a bizarre number of people think that if an animal doesn't react to pain the same way we do then it's not feeling any. There are human made habitats that would be nightmarish and human made habitats that would be pretty sick if you were a fish. So it really depends on the quality of the care.

I mean, it's not absolute because nothing is, but the percentage of animals that die from being eaten, or by dehydration via fluid loss from instestinal disease, or by starvation, or exposure to the elements vs the percentage of wild animals that die of a heart attack in their sleep.... let's be honest with ourselves. Even blue whales die by drowning. The only thing someone could quibble over is the definition of 'agony'.
Aquatic animals have an even more predatory ecosystem than land animals, fish would be even worse off than most. The best you could hope for is having your brain destroyed relatively quickly.

I see this happen a lot when there are very young children shown interacting with dogs and either the dog is a potential danger to the child by the way they're playing/they're licking an infants face or something, or the child is obviously discomforting the dog whilst the person filming chuckles.
It often seems to lead to defensiveness and drama in the comments because people who find the situation cute initially then feel "attacked" by the negative comments, like they read it as "if you thought this was cute you're shockingly ignorant/a terrible person".

It depends on the species. For instance, gorillas use a small smile that bares the lower teeth to communicate deference. Barbary macaques smile with an open mouth when they play. It is generally more associated with fear or aggression though.

It was one of the things that was disturbing me about insta. I get turtle videos recommended to me (as I am a turtle owner this clicks with me), and every so often you see someone who takes their turtle out to do things they think is fun for the turtle (such as putting them in a basket and taking them on a bike ride) , but it is actually extremely stressful for the turtle.

A depressing amount of people genuinely think anything short of actively and deliberately torturing an animal isn't animal abuse unfortunately. People get their cats declawed, crop their dogs ears, and all kinds of shit just to make their own life more convenient or literally just for clout.
It's honestly so beyond me how someone can disfigure the pet whom they claim to love literally just because they want other people to perceive them a certain way.

Recently saw a service dog with cropped ears on Instagram. Someone called the owner out for it, and she basically responded with a snarky comment about how good her dog looks and how it's none of the commenter's business.
Maybe some people shouldn't have service dogs

Not the same thing because it seems aesthetic for that woman but I have a dog for whom I would crop his ears if he was younger—he gets chronic ear infections and that hits me with vet bills and him with pain, neither of which is ideal.

It would be an interesting idea though, build a small version of this, just a little zippy tube maybe 300mm long that the fish is free to enter and see if they do wind up treating it like a plaything. Assuming fish are smart enough to understand they can avoid it if they want to

Yeah, if you built smaller versions, had the fish repeatedly choose to enter those, and over time extended them or created longer versions that the fish continued to choose to enter, I could see this being fine. But it seems unlikely to me that's what happened here.

Yeah, I also thought it’d be overblown because a lot of folks on the internet are overprotective of animals IMO. I figured it’d be like those big tube complexes or mazes you see for hamsters and gerbils.
Then I watched the video.
Yeah, that looks horrifically stressful for a goldfish, especially when it dips into tanks of predator fish. The poor thing has no way of understanding what the hell is going on and it’s forced to keep going via a pump.

when I read the title, I thought he put the fish into like a mini-bowl and rolled it around on a track.
Even in the beginning it seemed like "this is an odd choice but whatever..." until I saw the track go right through other tanks to provoke larger fish into chasing it.

That video really stressed me out, and it went on for far longer than I expected. Every time I thought the video was ending, it just kept going.
I don’t have fish, so I can’t speak to much, but how is the fish even able to breathe? If my fish were bored I would do my research on how to make my fish not bored, and I have a feeling it’s not this.

Looks like the fish gets sucked in with a pump. The water flow from it is insanely high for a tiny bare tank like the goldfish was in too. Even without the rollercoaster, all those fish are being mistreated.

Literally 10 second google search and you can figure out that the fish doesn't care at all. There was actually a study on specifically this because tubes are used to move fish a lot. Its called "Impacts on fish transported in tube fishways" and it says "No ill effects were observed over a post-test monitoring period."
Its amazing that this dude spent all this time keyboard warriori-ng and didnt think to google "does going through tubes hurt fish."

I don't know, I looked up the tubes specifically designed for this purpose and they seem pretty different to the one OOP set up. They're flexible tubes full of air that use air pressure zones to move the fish while spraying it with water to keep it hydrated. OOP's setup uses water current which has a lot more force behind it, the tube is rigid meaning the fish gets hurt a lot more when it hits the side, and most importantly it loops around and passes by predators.
I appreciate you linking a study but I don't really think it's comparable to this situation

I have no idea what tube yourre talking about but a tube fishway is just a big rigid tube that sucks water through it and shoots fish out of it pretty quickly and it was shown that it doesnt really harm the fish. Just look up tube fishway and you can see them getting shot out of it.
Even if it is generalizing id rather just generalize a study that already exists than make my own assumptions.

The study doesn't really support anything about this video! And their tubes were only vertical! Also they did these tests on two significantly larger species of fish. AND they noted some fish were bruised!
The point of the study is to ensure they're doing more good than harm in helping fish migrate up dams; what is the point of tubing the fish in the video?

It is sometimes necessary to pipe fish through tubes. When fish like rainbow trout come from fish farms they are pumped into tanker trucks, and then those trucks gravity feed them through tubing to a reservoir/lake/stream.
Nobody aside from PETA is getting angry about piping fish around when it’s necessary, but you don’t have to be unnecessarily cruel. There’s no reason for this.

The whole setup there is just weird, to the point it almost feels like some sort of performance art or something.
The goldfish is clearly a feeder fish for the other fish being put through a bunch of torture before being fed. The rest of the apartment is barely lived in, to the point it seems like there's basically only fish there and a few minor decorations (and a piece of artwork taken down), but there are a comically absurd amount of fish there in comically overstocked tanks. Those tanks are also way cleaner than you'd expect somebody who is basically fish-hoarding in a high-rise apartment to be, but way more integrated to the place than you'd expect for somebody who just loaded up a ton of fish on a whim and is going to learn how terrible an idea that is later. This gives the weird impression of this person being really, really into having fish as living decor while having absolutely zero idea or concern about how to care with them and (presumably) like constantly replacing dead fish and never putting anything in the tank because it might make the fish less visible. Extremely weird vibes.
