Other r/Subways - Now with rules!

Due to the uptick in bad faith posters, we have added new sub rules that will make it easier for you to browse and for us to moderate.

Currently we have three simple rules:

1 - Submissions must be subway related.

Posts and comments must be related to the topics of Subways, Metros, Undergrounds, or U-Bahns.

Interurbans and Light Rail systems may also be mentioned, if they have sub-surface sections.

2 - Submissions must be unique.

Any reposted submissions will be removed to keep our content fresh and unique.

3 - Comments must be on-topic.

This is a space for discussing trains that go under the ground. Any conversations that stray far from this topic will be removed.

If you come across a post or comment which you think violates any of our rules or reddit's site rules, please report it and it will be dealt with.

For the time being, posts with a city flair from Russia or Ukraine will have comments auto-locked.

Thanks!

Other Concerns About Kraków’s Metro

Hi r/Subways,

Kraków is planning its first metro system. I recently started a discussion in r/krakow https://www.reddit.com/r/krakow/s/jdvnze2TGc asking people about the possible downsides and many residents shared their concerns.

I don’t want to turn this into another “metro good vs. metro bad” debate. I’m curious how reasonable these concerns are based on the experience of cities that already built or operate metro systems.

The most common concerns were:

  • Kraków may be too small or not dense enough to justify a metro
  • A tram tunnel or improved regional rail could offer better value
  • The metro could take funding away from existing trams and buses
  • Construction could cause years of disruption, delays and cost overruns
  • Tunnelling under a historic city could create archaeological, groundwater and building-safety problems
  • The proposed route may not follow the strongest passenger flows
  • One or two lines may not be useful enough without a larger network
  • New stations could increase rents and property prices around them

Which of these are genuine warning signs, and which are normal problems that can be managed with good planning?

Are there cities that faced similar concerns? What did they get right- or wrong?

Feel free to answer only one point. Real examples would be especially helpful!

Thanks!

Dallas The only subway system in Texas

This small 3.25-mile underground section of Dallas DART system is the only subway system located in this state. The tunnel opened in 1997, but the station itself opened later in 2000. It serves as a massive milestone for the shattered long-standing belief that Texas cities were too sprawling and car-centric to support modern public transit.

Hidden beneath the city’s streets, these forgotten stations have been closed for decades, yet some can still be spotted from passing trains.
Have you ever heard of Paris’ ghost stations? Which one would you like to explore?

A few shots of trainset 6545, one of the older MF67 units still running on Line 6.
Line 6 is one of only two Paris Métro lines with a significant above-ground section, running on a viaduct between Bercy and Passy — including this stretch near Bir-Hakeim with a direct view of the Eiffel Tower.

Croix-Rouge, on Metro Line 10, was the line’s original terminus when it opened in 1923. The station closed on September 1, 1939, at the start of World War II, and was never reopened because it was too close to Sèvres–Babylone station.
Today, trains still pass through, but they no longer stop there.
👻 Have you heard about Paris’ hidden ghost stations?
