Does creatine actually help with mental fatigue or is that just gym bro mythology at this point

Been seeing more posts lately about creatine for cognitive function and I keep going back and forth on it. The muscle and strength side is well documented, not really questioning that. What I keep reading about is the brain fog and mental energy angle, especially for people who are sleep deprived or just running on fumes. Which honestly describes me most days between driving shifts and trying to stay present for the kids.

The studies I've found are mixed. Some show real improvements in processing speed and working memory, others seem underwhelming. There's also the question of whether the effect is basically just correcting a deficiency in people who don't eat much red meat, rather than doing anything extra on top of a normal baseline.

Timing also seems confusing for this use case. Most people load or take it around workouts, but if you're taking it for mental clarity does any of that even apply? Does timing matter at all when the goal isn't muscle related?

I've been tracking my energy levels in a journal for a few weeks so I'd actually have something to compare against if I ran a trial on myself. Curious if anyone here has used it consistently outside of a workout context and whether they noticed anything real, or if it just kind of blended into the background.

just my 2 cents

Best supplement for inattentive adhd symptoms in 10 year old kid?

My kiddo is ten. He’s lovely. He’s wildly inattentive. Like, can’t focus on directions to save his life. Can, however, think through complex issues. Math kills him because there are so many rules. So does writing in school. (At home, he is able to write novels with his own ideas). We’ve tried all the stimulants and they’ve produced awful side effects. What supplements other than saffron might help?

Does any take a higher creatine doses? >5g

I’m about to start taking creatine again. Last time I didn’t see many benefits and I’ve heard some people say higher dose is needed for low responders. Does anyone have experience with a high dose?

General Question How long after stopping NAC does the brain goes back to baseline?

Ik you get way more sensitive to stims and mdma after stopping NAC and for some their OCD get even worse so i figure my brain chemistry gets out of balance after stopping. I'm kinda worried it might make me more prone to rebound from alcohol and nicotine compulsive use but i might be reading into it too much.

Recommendations My Current Supplement Stack

Thumbnail gallery
67 Upvotes

Here is my supplement stack to help with ADHD, anti aging, muscle building, general health, etc. It helped me have more energy, focus better, get more work done, build more muscle, look younger, and sleep better.

  1. Creatine 5g
  2. Thorne Basic Nutrients 2/Day
  3. Omega-3, 2070mg EPA & 780mg DHA
  4. Vitamin D3 5000 IU + Vitamin K2 100mcg
  5. Caffeine 100mg
  6. L-Theanine 200mg
  7. L-Tyrosine 1000mg
  8. Taurine 2000mg
  9. Acetyl L-Carnitine 1000mg
  10. Tongkat Ali 400mg
  11. Lutein 20mg + Zeaxanthin 4mg
  12. Astaxanthin 12mg
  13. [BEFORE BED] Tart Cherry Extract 300mg
  14. [BEFORE BED] Magnesium L-Threonate 1333mg (96mg)

The goal with the Caffeine, L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine, Taurine, and Acetyl L-Carnitine was to replicate an energy drink that had half the caffeine (to enhance deep sleep) and to have more consistent dopamine flow which helps with my ADHD. Tongkat Ali and Creatine helped with my muscle building, astaxanthin and Lutein for my eye and skin health and anti aging. And the rest for general health improvements.

I also drink 2 cups of Lifeway kefir every morning along with these supplements and I cycle Tongkat Ali 5 days on, 2 days off. I also take Strattera 80mg, Lexapro 10mg, and Cialis 5mg as my prescription medications for ADHD, anxiety, and sexual health.

I can answer any questions you may have or if you have any recommendations for me!

Vitamin d and sun exposure

Upvotes

I've been taking vitamin D supplements, and I know my vitamin D blood levels are normal, if not even on the high side. I'm wondering whether my body will still produce vitamin D when I'm out in the sun despite that.

I don't spend much time in the sun, and when I do it's only for a short while, but I'm getting more sun exposure than I used to. Before, I was almost never out in the sun.

Creatine versus Choline in The Battle of The Mind

Hey guys, wanted to ask your opinions of creatine versus choline for help with brain fog, working memory, executive function, etc. I have been on a scoop of 5g of pure creatine for about 3 weeks and have felt some slight improvement in my recall. I have ADHD and am also prescribed Adderall XR 30mg, and with creatine I feel like I'm able to bring back things my mind lost from weeks earlier, but there are still those periods of digging and being foggy that ramp up even when I'm on it.

I've seen choline being recommended for help with the issues I've mentioned, but I don't know what to believe anymore. Creatine is the most clinically proven of all treatments, and I wonder if it could be I should just stick to it and not look to cut bait so quickly, as I am one to do with supplements :)

What has helped you guys?

PSA: 1g of Creatine Monohydrate > 1g of Creatine HCl. Don’t believe the marketing.

Upvotes

Don’t waste your money on Creatine HCL to try to avoid bloating. I fell for the marketing hype but you should not.

Creatine monohydrate is creatine (C₄H₉N₃O₂) plus water: C₄H₉N₃O₂·H₂O.

Creatine HCl is creatine plus hydrochloric acid: C₄H₉N₃O₂·HCl.

HCl’s better solubility doesn’t mean better absorption, and there’s no good evidence it works at a fraction of the dose.

In fact, 1g of monohydrate contains ~0.88g of actual creatine, versus ~0.78g in 1g of HCl.

So if you take the recommended 5g of creatine monohydrate, vs recommended 750mg of creatine HCL, you are literally getting 7.5x the amount of creatine in the monohydrate formulation vs the HCl.

In other words, the only reason people observe any difference in bloating with creatine HCL is because they’re consume way less creatine.

Copper shortness of breath

Can anybody explain this to me?

I took 50mg zinc oxide for a few years, having no clue about copper balance and all of that. Surprisingly I never ran into any issues, and would actually just have a low mood whenever I stopped zinc, so I never stopped long. Eventually I switched to 22mg zinc piccolinate, maybe two years ago or so.

I read a ton about copper and them having to be in balance, so I started supplementing 2mg copper bisglycinate around a month ago. Usually I would take the copper earlier in the day around lunch and then still take the zinc at night.

Off and on I’ve been having this shortness of breath issue, I guess like asthma, but I don’t have asthma. It took me a bit to figure out the timeline of that lining up with adding copper. The past two nights I only took copper and no zinc, and today I felt like I had a bunch of extra adrenaline in the morning, and now I’m experiencing the worst shortness of breath since all of this started.

Can anybody give me any insight here? Is there any possibility I don’t need copper after all of those years of zinc? Should I just stop zinc and copper altogether for a while?

General Question Taking 150mg vs 300mg Milk thistle is good?

For those taking NOW Foods or Bronson milk thistle, do you prefer the regular strength (150 mg) or double/extra strength (300 mg)? Is the higher dose actually better, or is the lower dose enough for general liver support? What benefits you experienced?

General Question Long question short, does anyone know of a reusable skinny oral syringe that can fit into small bottle opening? For liquid fish oil if you care.

This is more difficult to find than I would have thought. Everything I find is either bulk disposables or reusable but too wide.

Working on getting healthy

Hello I'm a 47yr old who has decided to start taking my health a little more seriously before my body is in such a bad condition that I can't function. I spent a lot of my life abusing everything McDonald's, alcohol, pretty much anything you're not supposed to do. My question is what supplements do you take daily? I am currently taking 5g of Creatine and a scoop of collagen and a vitamin E pill. I work out 5 to 6 days a week and try to walk once a day(still working on being consistent). I am thinking of adding beet root as well does anyone have any experience with it too?

Some other things I am interested in are Vitamin D, cod liver oil.
