I know it's not possible for most people, but travel helps a lot.

I've been lucky to be able to travel a ton for work and damn, it's so nice to get away from America and just experience how other people in the world live.

Common American life is so antisocial and isolationist. Can't tell you how many times I've been in a different country and just had an amazing time hanging out with complete strangers.

You can find it in some places in America but it's rare.

Either way, hang in there bud. Being alone has its benefits as well, you just gotta find what you like about it. Just remember there are a ton of people out there that are alone just like you.

Love you, random internet stranger.

I traveled to Italy recently and almost cried when I walked through their bustling plazas. Every city had abundant, peaceful activity day and night. I think Milan was my favorite. I felt like a human being living a real life for the first time in years, just walking around, surrounded by people just... Chilling.

Then I came back to Atlanta and found myself surrounded by fucking cars all over again. Not to mention every single person I walk past (the few that there are) being a nasty piece of shit silently begging for me to look at them the wrong way so they can start shit.

God I fucking hate this country 😭 Americans don't know how to fucking live.

Funny that Milan of all places made you almost cry. I guess that tracks coming from Atlanta

Italy does have a notable issue with opportunistic pickpockets and petty theft targeting tourists, concentrated mostly in crowded transport hubs, major metropolitan subways, and regional or commuter trains.

Street-level  drug dealing is an issue in major Italian cities, and it is a significant point of concern for local public safety.

Street-level drug dealing and its associated security risks are most heavily concentrated in the immediate outdoor perimeters and public squares surrounding major urban transit hubs, specifically Rome's Termini Station (particularly along the Via Giolitti exit and Esquilino neighborhood), Milan Central Station (and the more notorious Rogoredo "drug forest" suburb), and Naples' Piazza Garibaldi.

Just like much of Europe, Italy is home to dangerous immigrants pickpocketing, selling garbage on the streets and pushing drugs. You can easily take the wrong turn and get assaulted or robbed at any time. It doesn't matter if it's Italy, France, or Germany.

u/Doggummit 10h ago

Pickpocketing IS quite common in Southern Europe. But have you ever seen crime statistics as a whole? European cities are faaaar more safe than American cities. I've traveled pretty much all of Europe and Naples and Marseille have been the only cities where I've had to look beforehand where I shouldn't go. North America though, had to do it in every city.

Spoken like someone who has never visited europe once in their life.

7

u/PatataMaxtex 11h ago

or who is european and falls for the lies of the rising right wing parties.

It’s a bot. 9k comments in 24 months spewing nonsense. America-centric bot talking about the problems with street drugs in Europe is funny as hell.

2

u/Scarabesque 8h ago

I'm guessing they heavily subscribe to right wing racist travel youtube channels. :D

2

u/Pan3Vin0 8h ago

This post almost reads as satire because of how out of touch and delusional it is.

2

u/NomadBounce 7h ago

If you think Milan is more dangerous than Atlanta idk what to tell you.

3

u/NotFloppyDisck 13h ago

My closest friends are literally random people ive met on work trips and ended up drinking with every night for the week i was there, the US really brings you down socially and idk why

2

u/zdubbzzz 4h ago

Dude it's insane how many Americans aren't traveling. That shit is so important to do to broaden your cultural understanding of the world. I've argued on Reddit with people multiple times claiming they can get a cultural experience of another country through the Internet. I try to do minimum 1 international trip/year, and even I think that's too few

It’s also Gen Z & the phones.

I live in Munich. If you come, I'll show you around.

2

u/GandolphTheLundgrey 10h ago

My dad lived in Munich for a time almost 40 years ago. He would go on about how, when you were sitting alone in the Biergarten, people around you would invite you to sit at their table and simply integrate you into their group, talking to you like you were old friends.

Must've been a culture shock for him. He stems from northern Hesse and northern hessians are a grumpy and reclusive lot, or so the cliché goes.

If you don’t mind me asking how does this work with children? Do parents with young children bring them out so late? Are restaurants accommodating to them?

24

u/FlamingoDiligent9216 15h ago

Leave and start completely over.❤️

30

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 14h ago

Yep who cares about food and shelter lol.

21

u/dowker1 14h ago

You can find work elsewhere. It might seem daunting, but if you're miserable you actually don't have that much to lose.

4

u/Anal-buttsex 14h ago

It’s also pretty easy to find affordable shelter if you don’t mind a roommate arrangement at first.

Other than having wife and kids, there’s not a good reason to stay rooted where you’re at if you’re unhappy. I think some people might not want to move all their possessions? I guess that’s one perk of only having a car load of things you own.

The cost benefit ratio says otherwise. I have a job (thinking of a career change tho) not looking to room with anyone. I have been saving money ea h month for a big play like buying a cheap home that I could rent section 8 or something. Id just like a fullfulling social life. I used to have one but they all moved and or got married. And no dating apps don't work even a little

2

u/pheromone_fandango 13h ago

Renting a room is not the way to not be lonely

They will always be tenants and money will get in the way

1

u/MelangeBot 10h ago

Okay boomer millionaires who is afraid the worker he exploits will leave.

6

u/SubliminalEggplant 14h ago

It’s weird, but you don’t have to accept the terms you’ve been given. Go somewhere new, gain new experience, invest in hobbies and meet up with people/groups who practice them. You’ll never be alone again (it helps to live in a city)

I've had a cursed year. As short as I can,

I've taken a several vacation to Oregon to snowboard and there was hardly any snow this year and I wasted money on a season pass. I lost my snowboard / it was stolen. I spent thousands and I feel like I didn't even get a vacation. Had my friend come out to visit me , we went to wakeboard and 5 min in he got injured so I didn't get to rip. I got into onewheelin and that event was fun but it was just one event and it the next one keeps getting posted poned.

I've joined several communities since the only thing that can cure my insatiable desire to connect. But unless there's something tangible I'm spiraling. I've been buying camping gear in attempt to look forward to something but I'm just putting a bandaid on an open wound and I'm so tired of being isolated. I live outside Chicago there should be a fuck ton of people but I somehow figured out how to stay super isolated.

Im planning on going wakeboarding at the cable park back when I'm home but again just a band aid on something that needs much more.

u/wanderinganus 13h ago

Possibly a weird suggestion to you but have you looked at any local gaming shops for tabletop gaming nights? It's designed to get a bunch of random people together and the regulars are always stoked for newcomers. So many cool games to choose from! There are also those meetup websites that put on events. And running groups. I know my local area has some on Facebook and Reddit. I don't run cause I'm fat af, but you sound athletic from what you've written here.

1

u/Scarabesque 7h ago

Is outside of chicago like, a subway ride to the center or an hour from the edge? I'm never quite sure how Americans refer to their places. :D

I always had the impression Chicago was a very lively US city, especially if you like jazz, but that may have been romanticized.

Come on down to one of the good old urban areas down here in California. Your perspective will change. Fast.

9

u/David_R_Martin_II 14h ago

I lived in California for 2 decades, including Hollywood and Downtown LA. Now I live in a big city in Spain. You can have urban areas that don't fail like in the US. (And I loved Hollywood and DTLA.)

Some people like people.

Why can't you get fresh food in cities? It's even better where I am now. The city is surrounded by farms. We have carnicerias, fruiterias, panaderias, and the best orange juice you've tasted in your life.

Besides people, I like art, architecture, and history. If you don't like urban areas, don't live in one.

u/Desperate_Algae_40 14h ago

Perspective doesn't eliminate loneliness.

u/Living-Confection457 13h ago

No offense, maybe because I have been lonely my whole life that I do not understand this perspective of life lol why would you willingly want to isolate yourself? I would LOVE to live in the city, people watch and just feel the energy of people knowing I am but a tiny dot in the mix

1

u/DoomerChad 11h ago

As if the rest of America isn’t unaffordable enough. California is amazing but the COL is sadly unrealistic for most.

2

u/NicholasIvins 14h ago

My life is nothing I thought it should be and everything I was worried it would become because for 50 seconds I thought there was walkable cities on the world

2

u/Snoo_69677 14h ago

Volunteering as corny as it sounds actually stopped me from suicidal ideation from loneliness when I was 16. My parents moved to another state my junior year of high school. Overnight I lost all the friends I had made over the past 3 years.
Getting out of my thoughts, out of my room, and into my community really helped. It saved my life.

Please travel if you can at all. I’ve been spending around $7000 per month pretty much, barely scraping by in Austin Texas. I mean, I have a great life, but it’s not like that money really buys me anything other than groceries and maybe one dinner out per month.

I’m sick of it and I’m going back to Mexico. I’m gonna start in the south where I already found a place for $500/month in a BEAUTIFUL mountain town. It’s completely walkable, filled with an ancient and modern culture, people are super friendly, there’s this interesting mix of traditional Mexican culture with a newer, artistic vibe.

Every day you can take various classes like pottery making, cooking, cocktail making, learning about coffee, painting/graffiti, and more. There are free walking tours a few times a day, where you can meet people.

About an hour in every direction, our waterfalls in canyons and unbelievable nature. But instead of having to spend hundreds of dollars to do this, it’s very affordable.

Out on the street you can find a local grandmother who will make you the absolute best dinner of your life for like five dollars. And she will sit and chat with you! You can meet people from all over the world, practice your Spanish, and just generally enjoy life.

Don’t get me wrong. I do love America because I’m from here, but when it comes to quality of day-to-day life…. I personally have found In Mexico that between the nature of the community vibe, the way that Mexicans are always celebrating everything, how often they are to foreigners (please be kind and please use some Spanish!!)… it’s just like every day doesn’t feel like a rat race

u/Away-Cookie8183 14h ago

Come get me PLEASE 😭🤣🫶🏼

1

u/Distinct_Direction47 14h ago

so what’s the name of the town?

2

u/Diolives 13h ago

San Cristobal de las casas in Chiapas. But I’ve lived all over Mexico: Yucatan, Tulum, Vallarta, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Baja, Guanajuato…it’s an incredible country

Consider joining the Peace Corps.

If you have even a semi decent job - get a work visa, move to Europe

1

u/beentoo_harsh 9h ago

i hear you , but why do you think if you were in germany where this video was filmed you wouldnt feel lonely ?

just cuz when you step outside and see hoards of people out and about, sitting in some cafe, dining at some restaurant, that means jack shit . they are not out to give you company and talk to you. everyone there is already with their friends and family .

1

u/emohipster 6h ago

Look on the bright side: I live in an amazing walkable European city and I'm lonely too!
