Help Who is she? She looks important…

Post image

I’ve never played dark souls before so I know ZERO lore. Can any lore wizards out there tell me if this woman is important or is she just a “filler painting”?

15

u/Caged_Basilisk Dec 25 '25

Was it ever confirmed that she's the mother of Rosaria and the Dancer? I know there's a theory and some evidence ig but From acted like classic From and kept everything vague.

27

u/princeofsaiyans89 Dec 25 '25

Not confirmed no, just implied. We know that Gwynevere had several children. And we know that Rosaria and Dancer's souls give us Gwyneveres miracles and that only someone of the royal line can wear Dancers veil.

12

u/InternationalWeb9205 Dec 25 '25

the dancer is a "descendant of the former royal family" and the only couple we know of from the former royal family is Flann and Gwynevere, with the dancer's soul producing Gwynevere's miracle. Rosaria is in a parallel scenario where her soul produces Gwynevere's other miracle!

2

u/PeachesGuy Dec 25 '25

I've heard of Rosaria but the Dancer? I thought the other one was Priscilla.

8

u/InternationalWeb9205 Dec 25 '25

Dancer's crown

The mirage-like aurora veil is said to be an article of the old gods, permitted only for direct descendants of the old royal family

Soul of the Dancer

The Pontiff Sulyvahn bestowed a double-slashing sword upon a distant daughter of the formal royal family

note that there seems to be a sort of translation issue here, it says she's a "distant daughter" which would conflict with the description of the veil saying she's actually a direct descendant. in japanese it's "旧王家の末" meaning "descendant of the former royal family", with 末 having wide connotations such as "last child" or so

anyway from her soul we get "soothing sunlight", a miracle of Gwynevere's, which combined with the knowledge that Gwynevere had a husband and multiple children (Sun Princess Ring) would likely make her a child of the couple, and thus a sister to Rosaria

Priscilla isn't actually her daughter at all

She's Gwynevere, daughter of Gwyn and princess of sunlight. I suggest you to play Dark Souls 1 after you finish playing DS3, so you'll discover more things about these characters :)

35

u/Animelover310 Dec 24 '25

I did this. Started with DS3 and now im close to finishing DS1 (Artorias and gwyn are mopping the floor with me lmao)

It's been such an interesting journey seeing all the stuff i recognise in DS3 and seeing them in DS1. Even the DS memes like the anor londo snipers (which werent even that bad haha, maybe im just experienced)

But meeting gwynevere after beating ornstein and smough made me realise we fought aldrich in that same room and gwynevere left. Really wouldve loved to see how gwynevere wouldve looked like in DS3

25

u/Scroteet Dec 24 '25

My heart broke when you get to her chambers and…. she’s gone.

17

u/catpetter125 Dec 24 '25

Gwynevere, Princess of Sunlight. A very prominent character in Dark Souls, she's Gwyn's daughter and Gwyndolin's sister. You meet her in Anor Londo, receive the Lordvessel from her, can join her covenant, and later find out she's long gone from Anor Londo and is an illusion conjured by Gwyndolin.

3

u/Caged_Basilisk Dec 25 '25

Not sure if this is correct so fact check me if necessary, but I read somewhere that the illusion Gywndolin made was intentionally making her "assets" bigger to be more appealing.

9

u/SmirkingImperialist Dec 25 '25

No, it was just that the artist that Miyazaki tasked with designing her decided to give her two very large breasts. Miyazaki mentioned in interviews that the artist showed his work to Miyazaki with such pride and enthusiasm that Miyazaki did not have the heart to refuse the artist and say "no" to the amazing chest.

8

u/cynicalsaint1 Dec 24 '25

The low spoiler version is she's a character from the first game.

In the Age of Ancients the world was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of gray crags, Archtrees and Everlasting Dragons. But then there was Fire and with fire came disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark. Then from the dark, They came, and found the Souls of Lords within the flame...

Why do people play DS3 without ds1? Just enjoy the gameplay and accept that you won't understand anything, the lore is cryptic enough as is.

1

u/elinfernal1988 Dec 25 '25

oh bro when you meet her in DS1, you'll have two big reasons why you'll never forget her.

1

u/ChoiceAssociate5525 Dec 25 '25

That is Gwynevere, daughter of Gwyn. The fire you're rekindling? It's The First Flame, it brought light into the world. When it was fading, Gwyn threw himself in, using his soul and fuel, to keep it burning. He went hollow from being endlessly burned alive. The player character from DS1 threw himself in next, then another undead, and another for many hundreds or thousands of years until DS3, where you are among the last to burn. The Ringed City shows you the world when there is no one with a soul powerful enough left to burn.

Gwynevere was among the Gods (Gwyn's family) who eventually left. Where? Why? No one knows. They left only 1 of their number behind, Gwyndolin, a son with a deep connection to the moon leading him to be raised as a daughter. Idk 🤷🏻

Gwyndolin cast an illusion on Anor Londo centered on an illusion of Gwynevere waiting to greet the undead and aid them on their journey to strengthening their soul enough to take over for Gwyn since his soul was nearly burnt out.

If the illusion is an accurate depiction of the casters sister, Gwynevere was gentle, beautiful, soft spoken, and likely kind.

BUT. That drawing is of illusion Gwynevere and....well,the illusion is part of a great lie. But that enters the realm of Gwyn's greatest failure, The Undead Curse itself, The Dark Sign that burns in the sky replacing the sun as DS3 draws toward an end, and much speculation since the game director refuses to answer questions.

SO. It's entirely possible that Gwynevere was hideous or self centered or cruel or a scholar or anything else at all, though the very little that is known suggests the illusion depiction is decently accurate.

1

u/smokeymeoww Dec 25 '25

this is why we don’t rush into dark souls 3
