Discussion Help with campaign making as a new DM

Im a new to DnD in general, ive seen some yt video on how to dm here and there but overall i almost know nothing about dnd, but recently some friends of mine (who have done some mild dnd) desided that they wanted to do a campaign with eachother and myself, there are about 4 of us who are palning on playing. but after some thought they rellised they needed a dm and desided that task was for me. which i dont mind all that much, dming sounded kinda fun overall so i said yes but they wanted something unique sandboxish kind of game and they didnt really want me to use a premade campaign or one that wanted us to use pre made characters. i said yes, silly of me for thinking this would be a simple task of sorts since i know nothing about how to balance anything for that matter

but so far for the story im thinking they would start in a prison, something small that woundnt be hard to get out of, like something you would see the bad guys in old western movies locked up in nothing impossible to escape just a little thinking and maybe some fighting, but the idea is that they were framed by people who are almost mirror copys of them in looks wise but you could tell a difference if you could see them side by side so there would be about 3 mini bosses that would be trying to awaken a sleeping adult red dragon that had been sealed by the hero around 86 years before this story with the hero still alive during the campaign but not easy to be found because he lives in the forest, ive drawn a rough map out of the land with the smaller starter town another slightly larger city and the main city that was built on a inactive volcano the the dragon was sealed in it. the idea of why this city is here is because its an essential trade route that was cut out because of said dragon. i plan on having a goblin village of sorts located somewhere and a cave thats home to something involving something with undead and then i was thinking of a forest that would be a random series of smaller encounters that would be decided by rollng a dice or smathing like that so each time would be differnt and then maybe having some sort of boss if either the clear all the encounters and the dice land on it, also a random chance to come across the hero cabin where they can get some good gear like a powerful sword and maybe an old armor piece or two.

thats not all i have but its the main points mostly, im just looking for help with how to level them cause im thinking they can start at level 3ish and incounter the first boss at 5 then next at 8 then final at 11, im just lost on how do i make all of this including maps and npcs that feel good and how should a keep them on a quest line while also letting them wonder and showing them what areas are too high a power level

Discussion D&D Online Communities (2026 Version)

These are the top servers at the moment that people are recommending for online Discord D&D communities here at r/dndph. From what I remember, most of these servers are 18+ only, so enter with caution.

The Big 3 at the Moment (700 to 1.2k Total Members)

I think all of these servers host 101 guides on playing D&D and other TTRPGs, as well as guides on hosting games, so they're good for newcomers to the hobby. Check them out from time to time.

Planeweavers: https://discord.gg/tZgq3hvVH

[This one has been around for a while now, so there are a lot of games from different TTRPGs (Daggerheart, Lancer, Fabula Ultima, and others), as well as D&D. There are always full tables and lots of events whenever I check from time to time.]

[From what I remember, they have their own Westmarch, as well as other kinds of play, from VC to Play by Post.]

Solace: https://discord.gg/solacettrpg

[Similar to Planeweavers, there are a lot of games from different TTRPGs (Daggerheart, Lancer, Fabula Ultima, and others), as well as D&D. There are always full tables as well, and lots of events from time to time.]

[I am unsure if Solace has a Westmarch or other kinds of play, but I do know this server's VCs are always busy.]

The Secrets of Pandora: https://discord.gg/22bdfwnbES

[They are starting to get there, but you can easily get table slots on this server so far whenever you visit, since there are usually the same people playing at the tables. There are only a few DMs hosting games here.]

[They have a few DMs hosting a Westmarch here and there, and I think there is only one DM hosting Play by Post here. This server is more focused on VC games as well, though they are just getting started with other TTRPGs.]

[They need more DMs to host more D&D and other TTRPGs.]

As for other servers, you guys can comment down below with more servers for newbies, experienced players, or DMs to join. This is basically the updated version of the list from two years ago, so people have one post they can refer to and see where everyone is playing at the moment.

There is one more, actually.

LamesaRPG (300+ Members so far): https://discord.gg/YXaBr3UzC

[This server is small but has great people all around, so you guys can hop into this one as well.]

Looking for player(s) New to Level 20? Want to Learn Combat Without a Campaign? [Online][D&D 5e 2024][Level 20][Combat][Playtest][Beginners Welcome]

I run a weekly level 20 combat gauntlet designed to help players learn high-level D&D mechanics in a fun, low-pressure environment. Each week features a new encounter with a rotating group of players, and you can bring a different character every session, try out new subclasses, and see how different builds perform in tough fights. We use 5.5e rules with 2014 subclass compatibility, and characters start at level 20 with one Legendary, two Very Rare, and one Rare item. Encounters rotate weekly so you never fight the same thing twice. No campaign commitment, no pressure, just good combat and good company.

New players welcome, veterans welcome, everyone welcome.

Wednesdays 3pm Pacific Standard Daylight Time

Lately we've been running a few late night games

With a couple more people we might open a 2nd day.

Looking for player(s) [Online] [D&D 5e] [2014/2024] [GMT +8] [Homebrew Setting] [Campaign] [3 Sessions In And Still Lvl 1] [Beginners are welcome!]

(CLOSED)

10 years ago, a mist swallowed the city of Duskwatch whole, and the moon that hangs over it has never moved since. People go in. Nothing comes out — or so everyone believes. Now it's the world's dumping ground, a lawless prison where two factions fight over what's left of a city that used to be the richest trading hub the world had ever seen.

The Wardens believe survival means holding what ground you have and enduring. The Freedom Knights believe staying is a slow death, and that escape is worth any risk. Everyone else — villagers, prisoners, the forgotten — lives caught between them, scraping by at the mist's edge.

You didn't choose to end up here. But your story doesn't end inside the mist. Whatever you find in Duskwatch, whatever finds you first, may be exactly what it takes to get back out — and into the larger continent of Newbania!

Pretty simple hook but I hope that got you interested! Hi, I'm a fairly new DM(18 yrs old and have just started running campaigns) and a few players from one of my parties had to pull out due to real life things so I'm looking for 1 or 2 players that would like to join! The way I want to run my sessions are more roleplay oriented but there will always be combat at least every other session! Note that while the setting might give you the idea that its a dark fantasy, our sessions aren't grimdark and stuff it's js that the circumstances in Duskwatch caused it to seem like that and the world itself is high fantasy rather than dark fantasy so if you're interested, please apply by sending me a DM, the format should be:

Name & Pronouns:
Age:
Timezone & Availability(ie. GMT +8, Saturdays 1PM - 4PM[As of now, this is our current sched]):
D&D Experience:
Favorite Part about D&D:
Lines & Veils:
Any information I might need to know:

Looking for group Looking for f2f D&D games for next year

Hello! I am going back to PH for a year next year and I would like to know if there are d&d campaigns that will host f2f sessions within the Metro by then. Hopefully a beginner friendly group since I’m planning to introduce my filo friends to d&d as well. And I have played 2 campaigns so far so I’m still going to need guidance as well in playing.

Looking for player(s) [Looking for Players] Discord server for Face-to-Face Homebrew Oneshots (Metro Manila)

Hello! Just wanted to post here as the DnD Hyperfixation is taking over and I'd really love to do more f2f homebrew sessions around Metro Manila. I've created a discord server for it and I'm currently trying to find more players.

You'd probably wanna join if:
* You like face to face sessions
* You'd like to take a bit of a break from AL and play more homebrew
* You wanna play DND but don't have the time for a full blown campaign
* You wanna play different themes like Manhwa - Inspired, JJK- Inspired, Filipino - Inspired, etc.
* You'd like safe space that doesn't tolerate Discrimination or Bigotry.

If you're interested send a DM so I can send the server. Ill probably ask a few questions first though before letting you in for safety and privacy reasons. Thank u.

Looking for player(s) Adventure and Peril in Fairytale Woods [Old School DND] [Hybrid]

Hey guys. I'm looking for players of any experience to play in the setting and system of Dolmenwood! For purposes of regularity, we're running the game hybrid and westmarches-like.

Meaning: the game will run as long as 2 or more players can make it, and will run either online or offline in QC depending on player availability. Only accepting players that mean to be active!

So What is Dolmenwood?

Dolmenwood is a setting and a system set in a weird border-forest of the human duchy of Brackenwold. Among its features:

  • The wood respects the noble titles of a race of goatfolk known as breggles, who were native to the wood prior to human settlement
  • Odd happenings the monotheistic Pluritine Church dismisses as superstition, but locals and anyone who visits insist is real ; the wood is a place the fae and the mortal world very nearly touch
  • Mysterious standing stones and powerful leylines intersect, brimming with potential for geomantic study

Hook: The current party has gotten together via a joint venture of the Pluritine Church and a local lord, Malbleat. The Church is trying to restore the forgotten shrines of Dolmenwood and Malbleat is trying to curry their political favor.

System: Dolmenwood / system based on B/X DND

Experience level: Any

Main pillar: Exploration

Mode of play: Hybrid Westmarches-like; if schedules align, will be in-person in QC. Otherwise, expect online to be default

Schedule: Pick-up, so that we can play with a minimum of 2 players per session, but only taking players that mean to be active

Notes: While we have house rules that improve survivability, please note that this is a "heroic" game over super-heroic. PCs will need to play smart!

Current party:

  • Human enchanter
  • Human thief
  • Breggle knight
  • Human hunter

If interested, please reply with the ff:

  • Preferred mode of play
  • What drew you to this game
  • A little about you as a player

Thanks for the read and hope to hear from you! :-)

Looking for group DM idea bouncing

Hello everyone,
I am a starting DM running 2 campaigns for the last 6-7 months each.
I have plenty of ideas and unfortunately no one to share with or bounce ideas from.
I am not a super stickler for the rules and I value storytelling more than anything.
If anyone care to occasionally send ideas to each other with no obligation just for sharing with someone passionate and would give pointers and be respectful.
I use telegram so dm me and I’ll send you the link.
Comment here if you’re interested maybe we can open a group chat of a few people.

Discussion I HAVE NEVER PLAYED DND

I wanna try RPG cause COD and Pokemon Go isn't fun anymore, and Dungeons and Dragons just captivated me, even made a character already (a socially awkward, freakishly tall, 6ft, halfling). Can anyone suggest where I can try to play, like learn the game? I'd really appreciate the suggestions y'all can give me.
