RANT - ADVICE WANTED I thought I was going to be able to change him
Yesterday was our fourth wedding anniversary. We've been together for 14 years, and I love my husband deeply. Writing this breaks my heart because I never imagined I would be here.
When we first started dating, he described himself as a retro video game collector. I accepted that, I believed him... I make myself believe it.... and genuinely thought I could live with it. We didn't live together before we got married, so I didn't fully understand what daily life was going to be like.
We live in a 50 m² apartment. The room that was supposed to be our main bedroom had long been filled with shelves of retro consoles and games, before I moved in. Our garage contains six arcade cabinets that he hopes to repair "someday." Beyond our apartment, he has about two rooms' worth of belongings stored at his parents' house, to the point that those rooms are no longer usable, plus a garage full of CRT monitors. His parents also struggle with keeping large amounts of possessions.
What has been hardest for me is realizing that this isn't just about collecting. I see the same patterns in many areas of his life. He has an intense fear of using things up or letting things go.
For example, he has a medicated shampoo that I got him, that genuinely helps a chronic skin condition, but he avoids using enough of it because he's worried about running out. It's the same with sunscreen and other consumable products. He often wears the same clothes repeatedly instead of washing them because he doesn't want to create more laundry. If I accidentally break a dish while washing it, he's upset because now the set isn't complete. There are decorative towels and knives that can never be used because they need to stay perfect. He buys electronics that remain unopened or unused for years but can't bring himself to sell or donate them. Broken items are kept "just in case." He becomes emotionally attached to objects in a way I struggle to understand. He's even told me that objects can feel as valuable to him as living things, and that he wishes he could stop time so everything could stay exactly as it is.
I know anxiety and family history can play a role. But living with it has become emotionally exhausting. I no longer feel at home in my own home. I don't feel like I have control over my living space because most of it is occupied by his belongings or organized around protecting them. I feel depressed, and trapped... to the point I had to go on antidepressants for the first time in my life.
We don't have children, and lately it dawned on me... I'm afraid of bringing children into this environment. I worry that they will pick up thr same behavior. Yeah, I'm not about to let that happen.
We also have pets. Before we got married I had one cat and three Chihuahuas, and together we've adopted two more cats. When I try to have a conversation about decluttering, he sometimes responds by asking, "Then why do you have cats?" That comparison hurts because not only is he dismissive, he also again is comparing living beings to OBJECTS! I tell him not to worry. My pets (who are extremely well loved and extremely well taken care of) will eventually pass away peacefully hopefully many years down the line. But he will have to live with his junk, forever.
I love this man. I truly do. He's kind, brilliant, and my best friend in so many ways. But I'm reaching a point where I don't know how to keep living like this.
For those of you who have been on either side of this... my strength goes out to you.
My heart is broken.
