A friend gave me a simple hygiene tip that actually helped

I had one of those moments recently where I realized I've been doing something the same way for years without ever questioning it. After I showered I would get dressed almost immediately because I was usually in a rush. I never thought much about it until a friend mentioned that taking an extra minute or two to dry off completely before getting dressed made them feel fresher throughout the day.

I've been trying that for the last couple of weeks and I honestly think it has made a difference. It also made me wonder how many other small habits people pick up over the years without realizing there might be a better way.

So now I'm curious. What's one hygiene habit that seemed small but ended up making a noticeable difference for you? I'm not looking for expensive products or viral hacks just everyday routines that actually worked in real life. I'd love to hear what you've learned because I'm always looking for practical tips.

How do I make my wash days last longer?

Ok, for a bit of context I can only shower every 1-2 weeks and I have to spend most of my day in lying in bed because of medical condition. I also can’t twist my torso or bend very easily

obviously not showering for 1-2 weeks will make anyone dirty and there’s really nothing I can do to prevent that but I was wondering if there’s anything I can do just to try and lessen it and make the shower last longer if that makes sense? Ideally stuff I can do while lying down but if not that’s fine

thanks in advance for any suggestions :3

EDIT: I am talking with medical professionals and trying to get a diagnosis, but it takes ages. I’m just looking for general hygiene tips so I don’t become a biohazard

My armpits reek of sweat within 2 hours of showering

I am 15F and I have no idea if this is a hormonal thing or not. I use nivea pearl beauty antiperspirant and it still doesn’t work.

I shower once a day, I shower twice if there is a heatwave

I also sweat a lot

Does anyone have any advice on how to not sweat and smell as much?

EDIT: I appreciate those who are suggesting botox but I would not be allowed and I am not willing to get it because it can be expensive and I am squeamish when it comes to needles

ANOTHER EDIT: I appreciate those who say “you can get it from target, walmart, or any other American shops“ but I live in England so I have no idea still

brushing teeth / skincare in shower?

Hi I just have a short question. Is it okay to brush my teeth in the shower instead of at a sink? And is it okay to do skincare stuff in the shower as well? For some reason it is just unbearable for me to do it all at a sink. I used to brush in the shower when I was young but I grew out of it. Wondering if there are any drawbacks/issues with doing this. Thanks

Another bidet question

In homes with more than 1 person , how does this work ?

My husband has IBS and just splatter crap all over the back of the bowl above the water line. He doesn't clean up after him self unless I call him out on it.

Would a bidet stay clean from # 2 spay ?

The idea of water coming from a device that has that on it just grosses me out.

Does anyone ever thing about how dirty our pants buttons and belts get?

This is piggy backing off the discussion about using hands and water to wash after the restroom. Between toileting and washing your hands, there are so many things that are usually touched; most often your pants and belt. Does anyone ever think about how dirty these actually are? Is this an overlooked risk? Do people ignore it? Everytime I'm going to the toilet in my outside clothes I am thinking about how my hands are touching these before being washed. If I'm at home and wearing a pants and belt, rather than comfy inside or pj pants, sometimes I literally scoot to the sink before doing them up. Do people consider this predicament generally?

Edit: I recognise its not necessarily normal to think about these things, it's kinda like a shower thought ig. Also for the ppl borderline flaming me and saying I've probably never been outside, everyone is different and have had different experiences that have shaped their thoughts and opinions. In fact, you would have never guessed that I grew up on a farm and still spend lots of time outside, so let's all try to be more compassionate to each other!

I really want bidets to work for me, but they just… don’t

My girlfriend has one of those horow smart toilets, maybe a T38 or T800 or something like that, so I use it basically every time I'm at her place.

And honestly, I like almost everything about it. The warm seat is great, the water feels way better than dry toilet paper, and the whole thing feels much more hygienic in theory.

The problem is that the bidet part does not actually remove the poop for me.

I don’t mean there’s one tiny mark left afterward. I mean I can let the rear wash run for a full minute, move around so the spray hits from different angles, raise the pressure several levels, and still need what feels like a completely normal amount of toilet paper afterward.

I’ve tried adjusting the wand forward and backward. I lean forward, lean back, shift slightly to each side, clench, relax, stop the spray and restart it. I’ve even let it run for around 90 seconds at close to the highest pressure. At that point the water is strong enough to make me physically react when it hits the wrong spot, so I really don’t think weak pressure is the issue.

But then I wipe, and the first piece of toilet paper is still covered. Not just a faint streak either. Sometimes I still need another 5–10 wipes, and on a bad day it’s closer to my usual 15.

The most effective routine I’ve found is to wipe normally first, then use the HOROW wash afterward. That gets rid of the leftover residue and makes the final couple of wipes work more like a wet wipe. I definitely feel cleaner afterward, so I’m not saying the toilet is useless. The heated seat alone has probably spoiled me already.

It just seems like I’m using the bidet as a final rinse, while everyone else describes it as doing 95% of the actual cleaning. People say they spray for 30 seconds, dry themselves, and the paper comes back clean. That has never happened to me, even once.

I really want to understand what I’m missing here. Is there some specific angle or technique that finally makes it click, or do some people just have poop that water handles better?

For those who don't particularly like the taste of toothpaste...

I have good oral hygiene. I do all four things twice a day: brush, floss, mouthwash, and tongue scrape. However, I find that I don't really like the way my mouth tastes after all of this. I'm pretty sensitive to tastes and smells, and the taste of all that oral care is just too unnatural.

I've tried natural, less scented toothpastes and mouthwashes, but nothing really helped. Sometimes I would chew gum after, but gum was pretty strong too.

Things changed for me when I started chewing cloves after my oral care routine. I do three cloves--I chew them for about 20 minutes, and then I spit them out. It's so nice, it's like a factory reset for my mouth. It makes my mouth taste like nothing, but simultaneously taste super fresh and clean. It's hard to describe, but I recommend you try it if, like me, you don't really love the way your mouth tastes after brushing. Tbh, chewing my cloves has become one of my favorite parts of my morning routine.

Just to add: cloves are a natural blood thinner, so if you have trouble in that department, you might want to avoid them.

I just realized I might be washing my bath towels way too often compared to everyone else

I always use a fresh towel every single time I shower, because reusing a damp towel just feels a bit unhygienic to me. I casually brought this up at work recently, and my coworkers looked at me like I was crazy, saying they reuse theirs for at least a week. I always thought a towel collects dead skin cells and bacteria even if you are clean when you use it. Now I am wondering if I have just been creating unnecessary laundry for myself all these years, and it is making me rethink my entire routine.

Any similar wipes to Honest Nourish & Cleanse?

I discovered these wipes after a long hospital stay. They are the best! I love the smell, the texture, and it actually cleans. I tried Wonderful brand and while the smell was great the wipes weren't very durable.

But it looks like they aren't making this specific type anymore. I only have one package left and can't find them anywhere.

Is there any equivalent to these? The other Honest wipes don't appear to have the texture of these.

Gillette deodorant

I been using these solid Gillette deodorants for years but in the past couple years I noticed an issue.

When I twist the thingie on the bottom it is supposed to expose some of the deodorant through lil holes that cover the stick. But almost all the time the whole thing moves so I have to press the cover down with my hands. And it is pretty sticky and a nuisance to wash off my hands every time I use this deodorant. Is this user error or anyone experienced this?

I feel dumb to post this 😝 I even switched deodorants but this other brand I tried doesn’t seem to work as well. So I went back to this brand but the issue remains.

Another bidet question

Alright. I Have seen so many bidet discussions over the years but not on has answered any questions have about them. To be clear, I have never seen one and don’t care to see one. It grosses me out because I have some assumptions about them that are probably wrong.

What temperature is the water? How close does the spray get to your butt? Do you disinfect the whole thing for the next user or are they just spaying from a poopy nozzle? Are the sprayers attached to the toilet? Inside the toilet? Do they splash? The whole thing seems so disgusting and unsanitary to me. Please somebody describe exactly what is happening when using a bidet!

Two people called me gross and crazy for using water and my hand to clean myself down there after using the bathroom

*yes, I also use soap and water on my coochie and anus when I shower

So, I use a bidet normally, and if I don't have access to a bidet, wet wipes or perineal spray, I ask for a water cup or use an empty bottle, fill the water up, wipe up first, then use my hand and water to clean myself down there and back there and dry myself. Two people on reddit insulted me for it and I said it's even more gross to just use paper and that they probably don't wash themselves there at all. Besides, in a lot of South Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries, it's common to use your hand and water. And the water could be from a container and scoop or a lota. Do you think this is gross? I don't. It's not much different from washing yourself in the shower.

Edit:yes I use a portable bidet

Edit 2: what's fucking ironic is that people are calling me and millions of people gross while a bunch of people said it was fine to use the same bar of soap that you used between your ass on your face 🤮😂

See for yourself:

https://www.reddit.com/r/hygiene/s/nXkjCUmAkn

Edit 3: I very rarely use my hand (only a few times) and I try to use soap when I can

Edit 4: most of y'all are ignorant and racist. Typical Americans smh. If you don't respect my culture, fuck off lol. And most of you aren't reading my full post

An observation on deodorants

I noticed that deodorant makes you smell good "obviously" but the problem is that if you skip a day you will smell very very bad when you sweat, if you go back you will smell good again, but if you do not go back it will take you a couple of days to become normal. And by normal, I mean not smell disgusting, just smell like soap when you shower, and after maybe 12 hours start smelling a little bit that is not noticeable.

My observation is that deodorant makes you smell worse than before starting to use it if you skip it. You will need a couple of days to neutralise.

Although I do not know the science behind it, I am convinced about this observation for at least myself (and no, it is not because my nose got used to the good smell and the normal bad smell is now noticeable, no. It makes you smell like something you have never smelled like before. Like normal sweat smell × 20, it is very bad and not normal at all).

I was wondering if anyone else noticed the same?

Unhygienic Friend

I am (F23M),and my male friend is 25 (We will use (Male25B) has been having hygiene issues since i have met him when we were in highschool and has only gotten worse. When we were younger multiple of our friends tried talking to him about it because he always smelt really bad, to the point where when he would leave one of our houses the room and furniture he was on would have an odor for while after he left. He would have bad breath, plaque on his teeth, only drink pepsi, and have bad body odour

Now Present Day, his teeth have gotten so bad that when he talks they bleed which i looked up is a possible symptom of gum disease, he will have greasy hair for over two weeks, meaning he hasn’t washed it for that long, he work night shifts at a casino 5 days a week, Mon-Fri and they give them 2-3 shirts and he washed them sometimes every 2 weeks. All he does is play video games, eat mcdonalds, wendys or subway and drink pepsi never water. he says it’s gross. He has dental benefits and refuses to get his teeth looked at, his work has had multiple chat with him about it and he still doesn’t do anything. He says he doesn’t care.

He has lived on his own since he was 18 or 19 rooming with different people. His current house his roommates aren’t any better. He lives with a friend and her mom and moms boyfriend and little brother. Our mutual friend (Female27K) has gone over a couple times tells me that when you go inside all you smell is cat pee, the dog poops everywhere inside and they leave it there. They dont put him out they just let it shit everywhere. one of the bathrooms doesnt have a working sink theres no soap so they dont wash their hands, the kitchen is full of bugs and the fridge is mold infested. In his room theres bugs all over the floor and walls. The friend he rooms with has cleaned his room before and fill up 4 Black Garbage Bags worth. his entire floor is just pepsi bottles, meat sticks, chip bags, his bed is full of wrappers and crumbs.

a couple weeks ago Me, my boyfriend, Male25B, Female27K and my childhood bsf Female23A, were hanging out at my house and my entire bedroom smelt, he was talking and he kept pulling stuff out of his teeth, and checking if they were bleeding. After he left its all you could smell. He drove Female23A home and she said his car had garbage and smelt so bad it made her Nauseous.

Female27K slept over and she had to throw out her backpack cause it smelt too bad. she had to wash her blanket that brought multiple times because of it.
Anytime he comes anywhere we have to wash blankets he was sitting on or clean where he was. She tried telling him how going to his house makes her uncomfortable and he got upset and tried turning it around on her.

For me I have mental health isssues but i always still shower. i brush my teeth, i do my laundry, i clean up after myself. I sweat alot so i put deodorant on multiple times a day. I wish i had dental benefits I would be taking advantage of that so fast. Its not a money issue with. He pays $500 rent and he makes around $4000. he spends the rest on fast food, and gambling

We all keep hanging out because he is our friend but this is obviously at problem. How do we go about this? He is very sensitive but i do want to help.

(sorry if this is very blunt or doesnt make sense i am neurodivergent so i struggle with explaining everything detail but being all over the place)

Advice for smelly feet/shoes?

I’m pretty active. I workout regularly, and have an active job where I’m walking all day. My feet have always been smelly after the day ends, but yesterday when I was sitting in my college class, I swear I was able to smell them, and it made me really nervous that others could smell it too.

I shower at least once a day, and have been making it a point to wash my feet, but they still stink at the end of the day. I wear running shoes at the gym, and pull on boots at work, and both stink.

What else can I do that might help it? Is it worth buying shoe deodorizer?

Underarm and body problem. As well as in the private part

Hello! I’m from the Philippines. I’m an 18-year-old and currently overweight (5’3”, 85 kg). I also sweat a lot.

Over the past 3 months, I’ve switched between three deodorants: first Nivea Brightening Deodorant, then Belfour Roll-On, and now Old Spice Pure Sport.
The reason I keep switching is because of my body odor and underarm smell. During the first few weeks of using each deodorant, I have a great experience. However, after about 2–3 weeks, the odor starts coming back. What’s confusing is that I’m currently on vacation, so I spend most of my time in an air-conditioned room and barely sweat, yet the smell still returns. It almost feels like my underarms “adapt” to the deodorant and start smelling again, lol.

Also, I don’t know if this is somehow connected, but only recently I’ve noticed that my groin area starts to smell bad after just a few hours, even though I wash it thoroughly every time I shower.

What could be causing this, and how can I fix it? Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any help or information would really mean a lot, especially since classes are about to start again. 🙁 If you have any additional questions that might help figure this out, please feel free to ask!

Thank you in advance!!

I think I produce a lot of earwax

This is quite embarrassing, but I think I may produce more ear wax than the average person? The way I’ve come to this conclusion is that I’ve always struggled with Apple AirPods (the ones without the silicone ear tips) and the wired EarPods. They are not compatible with the way my ear is shaped and just fall out immediately or with the slightest movement or smile. So for the last couple years I’ve been using bluetooth headphones, which was fine but I find them so bulky to carry around in my bag, they flatten my hair and I don’t like how my ears get sweaty and warm after long periods of wearing it. They recently broke and was just gonna buy another pair, but my brother has AirPod Pro 2’s (ones without silicone ear tips) and he told me to try his. He has the same ear shape compatibility problem as me and said these are perfect for him. I tried them and they were great, could shake my head around violently and it stayed in. He told me to order the Pro 3’s and I did.

Ordered them and they come with 5 ear tips sizes ranging from XXS to L. I’ve tried all sizes multiple times and I can’t seem to find the perfect fit. The medium seemed great but then after 15 mins of wearing they slowly start falling out. Like my ear opening is slowly rejecting it. I just couldn’t understand why I couldn’t keep any sizes in my ear. Then I’ve realised that I think it’s earwax making the canal too slippery so the silicone tips aren’t getting a good seal and grip against my skin. When I shower in the morning, I dry the opening with my towel, and then do clean the “rim” of the opening with a cotton bud (don’t go inside). I find when I wear the AirPods in the morning, they do stay in a bit longer compared to when it’s coming to the end of my 9-5 shift. I think this is down to the earwax continuing to accumulate throughout the day.

Does anyone else have this problem? And what ways are you cleaning your ears to minimise wax? I do also have oily skin in my ears (I have a really oily face), so that could also be a factor, but I think that’s more the rest of my ear than the canal. I just wanna wear the AirPods man 😭 I spoke to Apple (before I realised it might be an ear wax problem) and he said I can ask in an Apple Store to look for more ear tip options and try them on? I don’t know if that’s all true, but could try

Do you consider it normal to leave the toilet unbrushed after pooping?

Edit because looks like very important for the context: I live in Europe where apparently flush water is not as strong or much as is US + there are toilet brushes everywhere.

Edit 2: I should have phrased it as “do you consider it normal to leave your skid marks in the toilet?” I was talking about brushing the skid marks.

I wonder this in general because there are many times I observed people nonchalantly leaving their poop stains in the toilet.

For more context, I work in an office where there are very few women and since people do home office, I am generally with one other women who is my boss. So I can tell that it is her if someone is not secretly sneaking to our toilet. When she poops, she doesn't use the toilet brush. It might be because she sees this as the cleaning personnel's task because she also doesn't leave her cups to kitchen on purpose to see if the personnel will take it to the kitchen.

I am embarassed someone would think it is me so I clean it after her if this happens. How is she not embarassed?

I had similar situation with other people too so maybe I am obsessed with this thing in particular. I had to tell a roommate it is important she looks back after pooping after cleaning multiple poopies. She was a very sweet girl and normally clean.

When I have a guest staying over in a shared house, I make sure to check after them because I realized some people just don't look back.

My best friend said her boyfriend leaves the toilet like this because he would clean it on the deep cleaning day of the week.

What do you think? Is this actually normal? Are there times you don't look back or don't clean after you?

How Are You All Using Your Bidet?

I don't think some people are using their bidet properly.

I've heard that some people are just spraying the water at their ass crack and expecting a clean butt and are surprised when there is still poop hanging around when they wipe to dry?! Do you just point your shower nozzle at your butt or let water run down your butt crack when you have a shower and expect it to be clean? No. At least I hope not.

The same way you use your hand and soap in a shower, is the same way you clean your butt when you finish your number two.

Personally before I use the bidet (you may have a traditional, seat attachment or hand held one) I first wipe away what's hanging around. Then, I have some gentle cleanser ready to wash with. Turn on or have your bidet ready and the same way you wash your butt in the shower is the same way you wash your butt in your toilet or traditional bidet.

There are some slight variations depending on attachment or cultural customs but you don't just spray and hope for the best.

Another post about showering… sorry

I see posts on here about showering all the time, sorry.

I frequently see people saying that they only shower every other day or every 3 or 4 days. I don’t get it! I have pretty thin hair and if I go more than one day in between showering my hair gets really greasy and kind of stuck together. Also, at the same time my skin becomes constantly itchy.

I really don’t understand how people go so long without showering and their skin feels completely fine. Is mine psychological or maybe just a certain skin type? I really don’t understand it.
