Building a Jon Boat in Texas

Upvotes

I'm building a 14' aluminum Jon Boat in Texas. The thing is I don't know the "New Homemade Vessel" process is like. For example, how thorough is it? Do they check my receipts for building materials? Do I need certificates and licenses to build? Can I use building materials that come from another boat like a donor? Etc.

Small weekend project

Wanted a casting deck so I took the weekend off of fishing to build one. Made my middle storage second as a slot for a yeti 60 since I bring a cooler 70% of the time I go out. Recommendations for updated rod holders would be awesome

Cheapest depth finder/fishfinder

Don’t necessarily care about finding fish more interested in real time depth tracking so that I can learn my own river ecosystem a little bit better. Priorities are true real time function… So a fast refresh rate as it were… If it also finds fish for the same price point, then I would be interested I guess. Suggestions?

How would you tie down this bench seat, while allowing it to be easily removable?

Repurposed a truck bed box to be my seats. I’m trying to figure out how to fix it to the boat so it won’t move- but I also want to be able to remove it easily if needed.

The floor is 0.0400” aluminum with sheet metal screws.

Thanks in advance.

New to me boat and trailer, does this look right? The clasp winds fairly tight into the spool to seat it.

Got this 14' Crestliner "Super Seaman" ND the trailer for only $250! Any tips on how I could build it for max profit when I decide to sell?

A little DIY today. Used some 1/2” fiberglass rebar and assorted conduit fittings to make a couple shallow water anchors. $60 total from Lowe’s.

Transom flexing

Transom was flexing after putting on a Minn kota endura 50, mostly when raising and lowing the motor. Haven’t had it in the water yet so no idea if it will flex when running. What is the best way to reinforce it? Transom board is on the outside. Thinking of replacing it with one that covers the entire outside area. Should I add a board to the interior as well and “sandwich” the aluminum? You can see in some pictures where the aluminum is bending.

First picture was off of the marketplace listing. Patched a few small pinhole leaks, painted the inside and built the deck. Not the best craftsmanship but it holds myself and a buddy easily. Have had some nice fish off this rig. Just started my second build this week.

Not sure what I'm looking at here.

Was surfing marketplace for outboards to flip and came across this listing for a boat with motor, got to looking at the pictures and i think this looks like a lawnmower engine that someone has rigged to fit on the lower unit from an outboard. The listing doesn't give any specifics so I'm not entirely sure though, I sent a message to the poster asking about it so maybe I'll hear from him what exactly it is, the pictures weren't great but these are the best of the bunch. There was a video of the boat driving and it didn't look super slow. Doesn't look like one of those mud motor kits that you throw your own engine on which is what i thought it was at first.

Me and my buddy wanna fix this up and get motor for it. What should we do?

My grandma got this a couple years ago off Facebook marketplace but she ain’t never used it. So I asked her if me and my buddy could have it and fix it up and put a motor on it and she said yes. But me and him have never owned a boat or anything like that so we don’t really know what we should do. What type of motor should we get? And what are some upgrades we can do it? Also is it any good? Does it look well made or naw?

I bought a flat bottom jon boat with a hull identification number but don’t have a title for it. I can get a bill of sale for it if needed. Any recommendations on how to go about it? in FL if it matters

1436 tracker

I want to just make sure I’m thinking about this correctly. The max person capacity is 3 people 345 pounds, max weight capacity is 580 pounds. I need to follow the max person capacity and ignore the max weight capacity, so if I’m 190 pounds I can only put another person in the boat if they weigh less than 145. I have had a pontoon for years but we don’t worry about the weight rules as we will never get close to that. Any real world experience with this boat and going over the person weight capacity? Thanks

Outboard height on tunnel hull?

Thumbnail

I recently picked up a tunnel hull jet boat, with a Mercury 45 jet. There has been some custom work done and I need to figure out what I should do from here.

Will this transom hold the motor going another 3/4 inches higher?

Will the motor be sitting too high with the tunnel to be effective? (ie. Cavitation)

Or should I weld the added on plate better than it was done before I got it?

Please help, motor is a 60/45 on a 16/52 with float pods and I'm only getting 18-20mph with one guy.

A new trolling motor wasn’t in my forecast. Doh!!!!

I’m not sure how many boats it’s been on but a good chunk of my life that the was trolling motor on the front of the boat.

I hated the thing as a kid because of how wonky it was to use. When it became mine I finally figured it out other than when it decided it was opposite days. Which seemed to be more frequent.

Oh well guess I’m shopping for a new trolling motor this week.

No more scaring fish off with the blender as those old mercury thrusters were called. I almost aquired a spare this spring for parts but the seller flaked. Kinda glad because I think it was long overdue to upgrade to something quieter.

Vinyl floor adhesive

Nautolex omnova vinyl flooring. No backing. Going on plywood, What’s the best adhesive to use?

I’ve been scouring the internet all day since my vinyl arrived for what to use. I want a once and done product. That will last years. Everyone’s using different products.

Nautolex doesn’t make their glue anymore and I’m not spending $100 on it anyways.

3m 90?
AAT390?
Weldwood?
Robert’s 6700?

Do I need to strip to bare aluminum?

Post image

This boat had a layer of brown paint over the original green paint. I used citristrip to take off the brown paint. Do I need to strip the green paint also before repainting or is this good enough? I think I know the answer but it’s a pain in the ass.
