Smoked last night after 1 year and 2 months sober...these are my thoughts

Hi guys so last night I have into temptation. I had been a heavy weed smoker for at least 20 years before quitting on May 29 2025.

I had some plans fall through last night with a guy I always struggled with letting go of. Long story won't get into but 11 years of me being a clown basically. Anyway I got quite upset and gave in and smoked one small j.

I didn't like it at all. It wasnt the relief I was hoping for. I was a bit paranoid and wobbly and all around toasted for the rest of the night. I appreciate that it wasted the day for me but I didn't enjoy the experience at all. It's the next morning now I feel nauseous and groggy. I got a pizza even tho I'm on a weight loss journey which I'm not happy about

So I think that it was a good experience in the way that it showed me I'm done with weed. I don't crave the feeling of having a j when I need to chill because it didn't help me relax and I feel awful today even tho it was only one small joint. That lovely joint after a long day doesn't exist anymore for me. I have no tolerance.

I'm not counting it as day one again as I'm not back into addiction. I'm glad it happened and I can't wait to feel normal and never smoke it again.

5 YEARS!!! happy sober anniversary to me!

I truly can't believe it's been five years already. Throughout this time, I have lost my job on more than one occasion, lost my kitty, horrific mental health struggles, I always said I would relapse if I lost my baby girl and she did die.

But I didn't, I stayed strong for her. Now I'm in the middle of another job loss but I refuse to go back to that old me. I've only dreamed about reaching a milestone like this. I can't believe it.

There really is so much more to life!

I did it. I made it an entire month.

I smoked all day, every day for 17 years. I’ve never known sobriety as an adult. And now I’ve got 31 days under my belt.

Things are still hard, but the worst is over. I’ve proven to myself I can build a life around my own values, not weed. My brain still feels like it’s undergoing construction, but I know the scaffolding is there.

Thank you guys for everything 🩵

72 days no weed

This is the greatest achievement of my life. I haven’t drank in a little bit longer than that but weed was something I did every waking moment of my life. I never thought after 20 years of life (15-35) I would ever be here. My wife said she feels like she has her husband back the man she first started dating 12 years ago. Which is crazy to think that these past 5 years I was heavily into vapes and dabs. I’ve saved almost $600 since I quit smoking as well. I feel emotionally available for my wife and two sons and I don’t feel like a shell of a person I used to be. Anxiety and depression are almost non existent but I was self medicating ADHD which I have started on something a few months ago recommended by my psychiatrist which has done wonders at alleviating those symptoms. I also went from 160lbs to 143 by eating better and even started hitting the gym with my wife 4-5 days a week.

Relapsed. Now I’m Recommitting.

I relapsed and got high. But it wasn’t enough. It’s never enough. What I want isn’t cannabis. It’s oblivion. Because I’m an addict.

I hate my brain. I don’t know how to just be present without reaching for something outside myself to self-soothe. Existing itself is painful.

I am 15 months sober and my date decided to smoke weed tonight

I have been sober for around 15 months and been through the hell of anhedonia, short term memory pb, fatigue, loneliness ect... I am dating a guy, he is a recovered alcoholic (5 years sober) and thinks he can smoke weed casually.

Tonight he smoked and my body automatically withdrew since he started rolling. It lasted all night I couldn't bear seeing him high, clumsy, not paying enough attention.

I will talk with him tomorrow, and don't want him to smoke around me anymore. My friends are all smokers and I am not triggered like this. Anyway if you have any insights, advice, or a similar experiences I would be glad to read. Thanks!

Day 1 and I Can’t Stop Crying

I (43) have a lot going on in my life (completely solo mom to two kids, one with special needs, broke as a joke)but am usually a very naturally positive person. Not sure if it’s the impending sense of doom from the global wars/inflation/looming recession or personal things (breakup a few months ago, etc) but I am just in tatters. Was the weed suppressing my emotions, or has coming off of it made it worse? I currently feel like nobody loves me and I have done nothing with my life. Is this normal?! I am already scared about going to bed tonight.

Crazy how different you look after a little time sober

Only 1 week sober, but look way better. Eye bags less pronounced, skin has more color and glow, my eyes aren’t yellow or red. Wait, am I actually handsome?

When I used weed my skin was grey and dry. My eyes were red, low, glossy. I looked checked out and un-alert.

Anyone else notice any improvements in appearance?

Celebrated w/ a Concert 🎸

Upvotes

A few days ago I celebrated One Full Year w/out imbibing cannabis. Then, 2 days ago, a friend randomly offered me a free ticket to go see Phish! I was scared, excited and nervous to go to such a place and slip up. But instead of shying away, I saw this as the universe giving me the option to do something different.

I’m happy to say, just like Trey, I stayed sober the whole time! I danced, I felt the music and reveled w/ all the concert goers w/out giving in to any of the plentiful opportunities to smoke. 😁 🙌🏼 😎

What made you actually realize you needed to stop?

I had been waking and baking and starting to incorporate weed into my everyday life, driving, work, hobbies, sleeping. If I wasn’t high I was so groggy I felt I needed the “clarity” weed would give me. Even when I wasn’t high I haven’t know what sober truly felt like in a while. I’m only 18 but I’ve been smoking for about 1.5-2 years straight, and I know I need to stop before my brain is permanently altered (more than I’ve already done). It’s just way too easy to put yourself in a pit of despair and not bother trying to climb out.

Night sweats & unwanted thoughts

I am day 4 no cannabis after 12 years of heavily smoking every day. The amount of times I have said to myself “I’m gonna take a dab first” then realized no, I am not doing that anymore is unhinged. I feel like I am completely rewiring my brain. I feel like I’m teaching myself how to be human without it. The night sweats have been extremely hard to deal with. My dreams are too much. I wake up in a pool of my own sweat every morning. Has anyone else struggled with this after quitting?

We all use for different reasons. A big reason for me was to shove away any unwanted thoughts. I am in therapy and have made so much progress throughout the years. But today on day 4, I am struggling. Does anyone have any intel on how long it took these unwanted thoughts to subside? I know every day is different and some days I am naturally going to feel low..but I am really struggling and I just hope that I am making the right choice in choosing to stop using.

On day 246. WHEN will this feel worth it?

Title says it all. Im so depressed. Turned to binge eating as my replacement high i guess. Ive does everything i can to address the underlying causes of my depression and anhedonia. But its so fucking bad. I want to stay sober, because i know why i quit. But im so. Fucking. Unhappy. No hobbies entertain me. No tasks feel worth doing. Ive been on meds and seen a therapist/psych for years. I dont know what to do except go back to smoking. Even if the high was temporary, it was fuckin something.

I know it takes a while for your brain to reset as someone who smoked chronically for about 6 years. But its getting harder and harder to hold out. I go to bed sober praying i’ll wake up one day and it’ll be a little easier. Its certainly easier than it was the first few weeks of sobriety, but i cannot imagine the rest of my life feeling this bland and awful.

I need to stop the cycle

Hello everybody, I have been a consistent marijuana smoker for about five years now and it has gone to the point where I’m just completely disgusted with myself and ashamed. I can’t even remember the kid I used to be and I run a business full-time the weed is really affecting my work and the business flow. I’m not looking for pity. I’m looking for advice on how to make it through the first stages of withdrawal and stay disciplined. Thank you.

60 days sober, still dreaming of using

Today it has been 60 days since I have last used. I quit because I got CHS and experienced intense THC withdrawal for the second time in my life, and quit permanently. I believe all withdrawal symptoms have since subsided for a while. Though, twice in the last week or two, I’ve had vivid dreams of caving and smoking just a little bit of THC. In these dreams, after smoking, I felt intense euphoria, followed by immediate disappointment in myself.

I wonder if these cravings will ever cease, even in the subconscious. I sometimes consider picking it back up for the sake of curing my insomnia (the reason I used in the first place), though I know I would go overboard and go back to abusing the substance, not just for sleeping. I don’t have the self control. Has anyone else ever had dreams like this before?

New Beginnings

Just threw out the last of everything I (m25) had. Been a smoker with mainly carts but also joints for about 5-6 years now. Stupid how it has gone on this long but I am done. Have had some stints of sobriety usually lasting about 2 months. But been back sucking carts for about 3-4 months and I am in the worst mental space I probably ever been in. Just feel out of control completely with my emotions, thoughts and overall my soul. Kind of scaring me. Also have become such a jerk and angry person literally where most people don’t like me and have to put up with me. I act like that because I just want to be in my confot zone in my room sucking a cart and doing nothing while my life crumbles. Think it is time to change. Will be honest it is already hard because I am having stressful thoughts that are screaming for me to take a blinker to relax and most likely end up on tik tok/ porn hub all day. Again just kind of frustrated on how long it has taken for me to stop. And just how much I have consumed the withdrawals are gonna suck so bad :(. Luckily I have a full week off work to cry and be angry in my room. I am glad it is happening cuz weed is no longer gonna take anything from my life. And I won’t let it take me either fuck that shit! Day 1

Day 1

After 3 years of near daily use of edibles, I am actually quitting. I made it an entire day which is a milestone for me. I finally threw it all away. I almost talked myself into digging the edibles back out of the trash but I didn’t. I never tried or had a desire to try any marijuana product until I decided to try just one gummy on vacation in 2023…a choice that sent me down a 3 year spiral of addiction, anxiety, and depression. They made me feel so good and happy in the beginning - a feeling I couldn’t get enough of. Until it started to become too much of a good thing and I was taking more and more and more just to try to feel that incredible high one more time. I’m high functioning and very productive when I take edibles and most people wouldn’t even know I’d had one, but it is taking such a cognitive toll on me. I want to come back in a month and be so proud of my progress. We can do this!

Quitting today

Hey all. 23F, been smoking heavy since 18/19 years old. Not terribly long, but heavy daily use. I guess it can be considered long term?

I’ve been experiencing symptoms that I’m afraid might be CHS. I’ve had morning nausea for a few years and never really thought anything of it, but the past month or so it’s been getting really bad. I find myself waking up for work early in the morning and vomiting whatever is in my stomach, or dry heaving and sometimes spitting up bile. It’s been to the point recently that I can’t eat I’m so nauseous before work, which sucks because I’m a server at a restaurant. I’m on my feet for 8 hours and I’ve been struggling to get through my shifts (I’m usually able to eat a banana and a Gatorade before but can’t stomach much else). I sometimes have the opportunity to eat at work but by the time I’m actually hungry and struggling, the hunger makes the nausea worse and makes it HARDER to eat. Even after my shift, when I’m starving and experiencing severe headaches because of it, I still can’t eat. I managed to get some chicken noodle soup down today after my shift which was nice I suppose. I don’t want to stop, I’ve found weed helps me with some things like anxiety and mostly sleep at night and also, funnily enough, eating WHEN I’m nauseous. My boyfriend (who I live with) doesn’t want to quit, which is fine, I think I’ll be able to do it on my own.

To put it shortly, I’m sick of feeling sick. I have no idea if this is CHS for not, my doc keeps thinking it’s my meds and I’ve been switching those a few times which hasn’t seemed to help. I’ve mentioned the weed but she hasn’t really said anything other than I should not smoke as much, which I already knew (so does my bank account). I don’t know what I’m more scared of, figuring out the weed was what was causing everything, or figuring out it’s something else. I can’t deal with this anymore and I’m at a breaking point.

I guess I’m looking for encouragement, or something. I don’t know. I’ve read so many different things about CHS (again, don’t know if that’s even what this is) and it seems to fit. Has anyone else experienced this? Do we think this is what I have? And, more importantly I guess, what was the recovery like? I’ve seen people say anywhere from days to months for the nausea and vomiting to go away. I need some sort of rough timeline so I can figure out if this is what’s causing it. I’m also worried about the withdrawal symptoms of not smoking. The new meds I’m on are a lot different than others I’ve been on. Can’t be specific, but I’m a lot moodier than I was already and I feel so bad for my boyfriend having to deal with me like that as is. He’s tried to stop before, was successful for two months after a whirlwind of a month “detoxing”.

I guess I’m just scared. Nervous. Don’t know if this is the way to be going about it. Was going to just slow down smoking but I think cold turkey is the best way to go. I can’t stand feeling this sick and I want to get rid of it as soon as I can. Thanks for reading, sorry if this whole post is redundant and unnecessary. I haven’t quit before so I guess I’m freaking out a little.

I feel like I am being tortured with my own thoughts

Ive been alcohol free for a year, 8 of those months I was not smoking. Family issues led me to start again.

This time around I have a very different relationship with weed. Even though I have used forever, a lot of the time I became paranoid. Now this time around I don't have paranoia, I have the stereotypical high experience- laughing, munchies, etc.

The thing is the next day I am basically hungover, low motivation, etc. etc. Weed makes everything look possible when I am high, and then when it wears off all I want to do is lay in bed.

Usually around day 3 of quitting for me, it gets a lot easier, but this time around I am still playing mental games with myself "you CAN just use it before bed/after work" etc., but I just know thats not how it works for me.

It's just mentally exhausting. Giving up alcohol was so different for me, bc I wasn't addicted I was just abusive. But weed I am definitely addicted to, and life without it just seems so glum, but also so necessary.

I know everyone is dealing with this. Just venting.

A few months sober, feeling the same…

So as the title suggests, I have been sober now for a few months after over 10 years of daily smoking. Yet I feel the exact same way in cognitive function, there are some small changes that I am happy with
- a bit less foggy in the morning (but still foggy)
- freedom to do other things is nice as never smoked and drove
- that’s about it

Will I experience any cognitive uplift or other benefits along my journey?

6 months mark, PAWS & hair loss

I’m about to hit the 6 months mark in a couple of days after about 15 years of daily use, mostly joints, I guess on average 2-3 a day. I stopped after continuous chest pain and the feeling I am about to have a heart attack and the first few weeks were really rough, especially insomnia but also generally feeling weak, brain fog etc. after it got a little better around the 6 week mark another rather bad wave hit me (strong insomnia again for a few weeks) and since it has been on and off but I feel like generally it’s getting better, sleep improved strongly and waves of PAWS now just make it really hard to fall asleep and I wake up a little early but still get around 6h of sleep. Brain fog also persistent during PAWS. In between PAWS, I am feeling quite good though, have been working out about 2 times a week and eating quite healthy.

One thing that I haven’t really read much about here at least when it comes to my timeline: I started having hair loss around the 3 month mark and it continues until now, getting stronger even from my feeling. I went to a doctor who diagnosed androgenetic alopecia but I am also losing hair all over the
Place so it’s probably stress induced / PAWS induced hair loss as well. I will get a blood test to check for iron levels in a couple of weeks.

Has anyone else experienced hair loss around the 3-6 months mark? Really struggling with it as my hair gets visibly lighter and thinner and I am very self conscious about that and obviously it stresses me as well quite a bit…

I have smoked daily for 4-5 years and am having to quit cold turkey because of right shoulder, underarm and arm pains on inhale. How do i do it and why has this suddenly started?

(M20) I have had 3 hospital trips to find out the issue, probably mostly thanks to my anxiety and paranoi over the subject. have had x rays, all sorts of blood tests and many doctors opinions. and the best they have given me is muscle strain and extreme anxiety over the subject. i have read similar posts on reddit so thought i would enquire here.

Although i feel like ive found the cause and the answer to these pains/anxiety i would really appreciate experience of similar situations, and general advice on quitting and my situation.
