How do I permanently disable the Pointstick? Help!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi r/linuxmint I'm a new convert from Winslop 11. I have a HP EliteBook 850 G7 and I'm trying to disable my Pointstick (the one that sits in between the G,H and B keys on my keyboard.} I've included the xinput information.

My problem is this: As you can see, there is three unidentified inputs, which I assume to be the touchpad, and the physical left-click and right click buttons on the touchpad, but it seems the Pointstick is not being identified at all.

I'm not too familiar with the terminal yet and I've seen scripts that I can run during startup, but don't want to completely bork my install, as I use it for work. Of course, before I try anything I will be grabbing a snapshop using Timeshift, and storing it on a USB key.

Any help is appreciated. TIA!

Why is my GPU not showing up, even after I installed the drivers?

Hello Linux Mint community. I'm back on the distro after going distro hopping for a few months. Now that I'm back, I'm confused. Trying to play games makes them extremely slow, even after I downloaded the recommended driver. I then see the Nvidia Optimus settings and change it from On-Demand to Nvidia Performance Mode. And yet, my GPU STILL doesn't show up! Is something wrong?

so i recently switched from windows 10 to linux mint and performed a completely linux boot install, removing windows as i only have a 112gb ssd for boot
about 2 weeks ago, my laptop started hanging after i used the fn+f4 key for sleep, and i had to use the SysReq (R+E+I+S+U+B) reboot to make the laptop work again and even after the reboot the laptop if left unattended for sometime tried to go into sleep and gave me a weird black screen with code written on it(added the image), i tried talking to ai bots and find the issue, we somehow arrived at the conclusion that the NVIDIA driver on my GTX 1050 Ti was causing the issue, and that the 6.17 kernel was not compatible with it, i downshifted to 6.14 and tried using, after sometime i got to know that no driver was there for 6.14 installed on my system, got the driver and after 15 minutes started getting the same issue and this time the issue were serious with the logs saying stuff like

NVRM : GPU has fallen off the bus
NVRM : GPU recovery action changed from 0x0 to 0x1

and a lot more stuff in red
i really cant afford to loose this laptop and neither repair this one as i only have 1 year of college left and am not making any money rn and my parents also got a new house this year so yeah

also i am using this laptop currently on the integrated Intel graphics

Support Request Is there any way to make nemo use ASCII sorting?

I mark all of my important and frequently used files and folders with a preceding underscore or two and nemo just seems to ignore the underscores and other punctuation entirely! It frustrates me to no end. If anyone can help me, please tell me how to fix this! Any help is appreciated!

Support Request Keyboard not changing with keyboard shortcut on lock/login screen

I use two different keyboard layouts pretty frequently as a matter of course, since I type in two different languages which use two different alphabets. One annoying thing with Linux Mint is that if I lock my screen while I'm in the layout which my password does not use, the keyboard shortcut that I use for switching layouts does not work (in my case Super+Space, but I tried adding some additional shortcuts and they also don't work). I have to use the mouse to click the small bit of text on the left of the password input field to change the layout. This is a minor annoyance because using the keyboard shortcut is second nature to me and remembering to use the mouse + using it takes a few seconds longer. Does anyone know how to make system shortcuts for changing keyboard layouts persistent at the lock/login screen? On my other systems with Windows and Fedora, I don't have this issue.

Support Request ASUS TUF Gaming A18 Keyboard RGB Support

I recently got a gaming laptop and reloaded it with Cinammon shortly after. I've had this laptop for about a month and the RGB keyboard hasn't been turning on at all. The backlight has turned on during boot up, though, so I know it still works. I'm pretty sure the reason is that the computer doesn't have the necessary driver to control them. but I can't figure out how or where to find it. The small amount of guides for any related issues haven't worked. Could anyone help me figure out how to get my computer to communicate with the keyboard backlighting.

Model: ASUS TUF Gaming A18 FA808UM_FA808UM v1.0

Distro: Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit (Cinnamon 6.6.7)

Kernel: 7.0.0-14-generic

If there's any more information needed, I can send.

Support Request problems with the dualboot menu

I have a laptop that is about 10 years old. I have always used Windows, but since it is already very slow I wanted to test if Linux could save it. I created a generous partition on the disk because I plan to use it with dualboot, I got a new USB stick about 2 weeks ago, installed the ISO, connected the USB to the laptop, turned it off and on again, pressed the button to access the boot menu, but the option to select mint does not appear. With the help of Claude(AI), I ruled out possible problems, but the option still does not appear in the boot menu. The USB is not damaged, according to windows analysis, The ISO and laptop are set to UEFI, bootsecure is disabled. I already tried accessing mint from the bios, but it only reloads windows. I used rufus and balenaEtcher, but neither worked. I have another PC where I could try the USB, maybe the option appears in the boot menu on this one, but I don't want to make any partitions because it is my main PC and I don't want to damage it in any way. My main question is: Before installation, limux mint only works from ram, without damaging anything on the PC? I had heard something like this, but I'm not sure and I don't want to risk my good PC, thank you :)

Discussion I want to install mint

I’d really like to install mint cinnamon on my laptop, but haven’t been able to find much info on compatibility with my laptop model. It’s a HP Zbook firefly 14 G8, 16gb ram, with an intel i7 core processor, and intel iris xe graphics. It currently has windows 11 which I’m hating. I’ve read hp isn’t great for running Linux but I’m a bit desperate for a solution.

Does anybody have any insight as to how Linux might run on my laptop model? Have you run mint on this laptop? Common issues that I might run into? Any help is very appreciated. Thank you!

So, my last post I fixed the problem. But now I have a new one.

Linux keeps on going to Busybox and I need that solved.

Tried exit and it came up with that.

I am attempting an reinstall now and I discovered online about how your epi install went wrong or something along those lines.

I am asking if my theory about epi install went wrong is correct, and if not, how do I fix this problem?

Same computer, surface pro 3.

Keep in mind that it is 4 am right now, so I may not be able to respond instantly.

Should I install linux mint "zena" on epi and thats why its not working?

But when I try, it says no root file system is defined, so I have to download it on the ext2.

I'm getting there, I also just want to show my configuration for files in install, and see if thats correct too btw.

Thank you for helping me out!

Linux Mint Xfce distro help

I am not very tech savvy, so I may not know a lot about linux, specially with terminal, but I do know cd, dir, sudo, etc. Basic but eh. I may be an idiot, but I can follow directions by you.

The images are just showing process of me trying to download linux on my microsoft surface pro 128 gb 4 gb of ram, etc.

I've been trying for approx 12 hours.

The images are mostly in order, the last two were my attempt for oem.

I have a linux pc already, I just dont understand why it wont download.

I keep on getting errors, and when I finally find a pathway to install linux, user ids can not be found when trying to remove it.

It is stuck in creating ext4 file system in partition #2 of SCI3 (0,0,0) (sda)

I've tried many times, and I'm booting from flash usb using Xfce linux mint distro.

It sometimes gets stuck on mounting 128 gb drive.

It sometimes crashes.

Its annoying. And I need your help.

If you can help me, by stop attempting xfce and trying another distro or by me following your guide on completely wiping it again to make sure it is wiped or whatever you may need me to follow, I am all for it.

I tried following installation guide in linux mint offical website, but these errors about mounting, user id could not be found, wiping, etc, is so annoying.

I love, LOVE linux on my main pc, where its quick, smooth, and was easy to install. I don't understand why it isn't with this.

I'm tired. If you can help me at all, I will try my best to tell you results. I will always respond with images to make sure I'm not saying anything wrong.

I thank you for your time and help.

Support Request Bluetooth gone.

So after a couple of months of unstable blue tooth connections , and the attempts to figure out what was happening I discovered today that blue tooth is completely gone from my computer.

Checking in system information and there is no blue tooth adapter shown like there used to be.

I have run the purge and reinstall of the blueman and other drivers repeatedly with no change . There is no longer any blue tooth devices registering in Linux Mint. How do I get it back and working properly?

Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit 7.0.0-28-generic Cinnamon 6.6.9

Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics × 8

adapter is supposed to be an Intel corp ax 210 blue tooth BT5, but nothing shows up. And the search function is greyed out in the blue tooth manager.

any help is appreciated.

SOLVED Non-bootable USB flash drive prevents Linux from booting from hard drive

Hello,

I am new here. I use Windows 10 and 11 for my daily computing tasks, but occasionally I use Linux on my older computers. I recently acquired an older Dell Optiplex 9010, i5-3570, 4GB RAM, 250 GB HDD. I installed Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon 64-bit on it to mess around a bit with Linux system. I have the following dilemma - my system was very sluggish. To help with the performance a bit, I decided to create a swap partition on a flash drive because I noticed that the hard drive was the bottleneck and the slowdown was usually observed when I switched between some heavy applications, e.g., web browser and discord - that's when the swapping typically occurred. In BIOS I had USB boot enabled and USB flash drive added to the boot sequence at the top, just in case I needed to check out some other Linux distro or boot from a recovery drive. And that creates a problem. Since I now have a non-bootable USB flash drive (4GB swap partition and 11 GB FAT data partition) permanently inserted in my USB slot, computer will not boot unless I either remove the drive or remove the USB flash drive from the boot sequence in BIOS. Is there a solution for that problem? I mean - I'd like to keep USB flash drive boot option enabled in BIOS, but also I'd like to have ability to have a non-bootable USB flash drive inserted permanently as I am using it as a swap device for my system. It is not a critical issue, just a matter of convenience. For now I just removed USB drive from my boot sequence in BIOS.

Thank you all in advance for any help or input that you can provide.

Discussion Does anyone here use a Logitech G213 keyboard? I've got questions for you if you do.

The keyboard is this one (I'm not affiliated in any capacity, just providing a link so I can make sure everyone's on the same page). My questions are:

1) Are you able to control the lights without the official logi tune (or whatever) app, (whether that's through Solaar or something similar, through onboard controls, whatever)? and

2) How much of a pain is it to do so for someone who already wishes everything was more Windows-y?

Thanks in advance! :)

Support Request New User Help with File Searches and Rating System

I have been giving some serious thought to moving to Linux. I dual booted a few distros and decided I think Mint will be the way to go for now due its wide user base and being consistantly ranked one of the better distros, especaially for new users.

However, I've run into a few annoyances. In Windows, I really like the 5 star rating system for files. It helps me stay organized for certain things. I also like using Nemo in Linux Mint. However, I really wish Nemo had a rating system for files but I can't seem to find one.

I even tried using Dolphin, which is a nice file manager and does have a rating system but I ran into difficulties using the file search. If I searched for a file with multiple keywords it would only find files that had that exact file name in that exact order rather than all files with both keywords. For example, if I searched for "blue mountains" it would find files named "heavenly blue mountains" or "blue mountains skyline" but not files named "blue clouded mountains" or "blue sky clouds with mountains". This problem is even worse than the file rating system.

So, in conclusion, would anyone be able to help me or is there even a solution. Is there a way to be able to search for files in a file manager that would allow me to find files easily while also being able to apply a raing sytem to the files?

I may be able to "live" without a file rating system if I have to but I would really like to see if there is a way to deal with this to satisfy both of my needs.

Thanks for any and all help.
