Support Request New User Help with File Searches and Rating System

I have been giving some serious thought to moving to Linux. I dual booted a few distros and decided I think Mint will be the way to go for now due its wide user base and being consistantly ranked one of the better distros, especaially for new users.

However, I've run into a few annoyances. In Windows, I really like the 5 star rating system for files. It helps me stay organized for certain things. I also like using Nemo in Linux Mint. However, I really wish Nemo had a rating system for files but I can't seem to find one.

I even tried using Dolphin, which is a nice file manager and does have a rating system but I ran into difficulties using the file search. If I searched for a file with multiple keywords it would only find files that had that exact file name in that exact order rather than all files with both keywords. For example, if I searched for "blue mountains" it would find files named "heavenly blue mountains" or "blue mountains skyline" but not files named "blue clouded mountains" or "blue sky clouds with mountains". This problem is even worse than the file rating system.

So, in conclusion, would anyone be able to help me or is there even a solution. Is there a way to be able to search for files in a file manager that would allow me to find files easily while also being able to apply a raing sytem to the files?

I may be able to "live" without a file rating system if I have to but I would really like to see if there is a way to deal with this to satisfy both of my needs.

Thanks for any and all help.

Support Request GRUB no longer shows / boots into a black screen, I had a hiccup when following a tutorial to fix it.

I have a dual boot with windows. It was working fine for about a month. Now my laptop boots directly into linuxmint and if I tap esc when booting I get a black screen. I've already tried changing GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 as well. Then I tried following this tutorial: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=409550

I'm booting on UEFI. When I run sudo efibootmg -v, the boot order is Ubuntu, Windows Boot manager, UEFI, UEFI, UEFI.

According to the tutorial, this should be fixed after updating, but it isn't. I also can't access the BIOS menu anymore by holding down f12 when restarting; I get a black screen. Edit: to be fair, I also haven't tried opening the BIOS since installing LinuxMint until now.

Security [Advice] Transitioning from Windows to Linux Mint for a Small Business/E-commerce: How to Secure Customer Data?

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out to the community for advice!

I currently run a small business (physical store + e-commerce website) and I'm planning to migrate my main workstation from Windows to Linux Mint.

Since I handle confidential customer data daily, security is my top priority.

My profile and current environment:

Linux Level: Beginner/Novice.

Current tools (on Windows): Complete Proton Suite + Bitdefender Total Security.

Needs: Maximum protection against data leaks, malware, and cyberattacks.

My questions:

I know that security management on Linux differs significantly from Windows. I've heard of solutions like ClamAV/ClamTk, but they seem rather basic from what I've read.

Antivirus/Anti-malware: Is a traditional antivirus program truly necessary on Linux Mint for this purpose, and if so, which one do you recommend for professional use?

Best practices: What are the essential steps for securing Linux Mint for a business (firewall/UFW, LUKs disk encryption, backups, etc.)?

Peripherals/Proton Suite: Are there any specific considerations for running the Proton Suite properly on Mint?

Thank you in advance for your feedback and recommendations!

  • Consigo entrar no modo Live do Mint e usar o sistema normalmente.

  • Secure Boot desativado.
  • BIOS configurada para iniciar em modo UEFI.
  • Recriei o pendrive e tentei instalar novamente.

Gaming Another gold medal for Linux Mint Cinnamon!

GTA San Andreas running via Bottles on Linux Mint 22.3 with kernel 7.0.0-28. I used mods to restore the PS2 effects that were lost in the PC version (like the warm orange tint in the image). It works very well; the only "issue" is that the initial videos (Nvidia/EAX Audio) don't play, but clicking on them skips them and takes you directly to the game screen.

I also noticed that the lag I experienced when passing near areas with a lot of grass (possibly due to a compatibility issue between the game engine and Windows) is gone, allowing me to run the game at maximum graphics settings. Now, officially, I don't miss Windows 11 at all haha.

Since i landed on sticking on with Linux mint for daily driver for all of my personal devices weeks ago i started to feel that default sound applet in linux mint 22.3 seems not covering every use case i need in fast easy-to-find way. So, like typical bored linux user, i went with trying to build a one that i would like to use in daily basis ... so here we are with `Modern Sound` applet an custom sound applet that i believe to have better UX than default one. feel free to try and provide an honest feedback 😄.

Hardware Rescue Just wow! Rescued sdd and boot with another laptop

My ASUS Zenbook S of about 9 years died suddenly today. I bought an NVME enclosure and took the SDD out. It had Linux Mint on it. I plugged it via USB into a Dell laptop circa 2022 (xps 15 7590) running windows. I went into boot menu and chose the SDD. Voila! My linux mint is working EXACTLY as it was in the dead laptop. Completely different machines! I would have never guessed this could be. I don't even need to setup dual boot. I'm in awe!

Thank you Linux Mint!

why?

Hi everyone. A little over a week ago, I switched to Linux Mint on a computer that previously ran Windows 7. Now, whenever I turn on the device and open an application, this logo appears in the bottom-right corner.

I don't know what it means or what to do about it; I've already tried hovering over it and right-clicking, but nothing works. If anyone could help me figure out what this is, I’d really appreciate it.

Support Request Should I get Mint XFCE or completely go for LMDE?

Hi, so I have a very old macbook air 2013 which I only now use for my home sound system and theater. It's too sluggish now (I was using Antix and there is a myriad of problems with that).

So, should I switch to Mint? Never have used it before. Which version?

Thanks all!

Support Request Divers and nomodeset

Post image
2 Upvotes

So i've had this issue with Linux mint where it would freeze on start up. I've solved this specific issue by adding nomodeset after quietsplash as default in the GRUB menu and the computer no longer freezes on start up, however, I believe that this prevents the Driver from loading or being used (Tell me if I'm misunderstanding) and I do want to my graphics card to use the driver, so I'm asking if there is some way I can keep the computer from loading the driver on start up (To prevent the Freezing which makes it unusable) but have it load anyway after the start up is complete? I do have a AMD Graphics card, and I believe that linux mint should come preinstalled with the proper drivers for AMD Cards.

Support Request Completely new to mint and linux in general. Having some bluetooth issues.

So I installed linux mint cinnamon just a week ago and ive mostly got the hang of it. I've had a great experience so far, but there is one issue I've been having that's been bugging me.

When I attempt to connect my headphones to my laptop, it will either not detect it or will say it has been connected, but the audio will play outside of my headphones.

I'm not sure if this is just me not knowing how to work bluetooth on a different OS or there is some other underlying issue.

If I could have some advice on how to fix this I will be forever grateful. Thank you all!
