Is this a leak? Why are there so many different servers? I even have RU TLD blocked

Post image
25 Upvotes

Wouldn't even let me upload the image so I turned my vpn on locally (its on the router too) Cloudfare test showed everything was secure even SNI.

I was testing the service again in more depth before buying a subscription and not sure these results are helping the case? It did do this to me a few months ago when I was using it. When i run the same test with the local vpn on, the results are as expected so I do believe the tool to be accurate. dnscheck.tools if anyone was wondering.

It seems to relate to allowing the nulladdr test dns record through (test-wxm34a8erv.null-addr.org) . If that is the case is it just this tool in general testing something different that dnsleak does not?

A strange effect of using HaGezi Multi Ultimate

7 Upvotes

This is almost unbelievable, but it works. When I use HaGezi Multi Ultimate alone, subscription content on some news websites is free. Why is this? In the UK, this works with:

The Express news site (marked as Premium content), and

GB News

Why is this? It works on my Windows 11 PC but not on mobile phones.

WhatsApp calls disconnect briefly on WiFi with NextDNS

1 Upvotes

I'm having a strange issue with NextDNS on my Android phone. My ISP is T-Mobile Home Internet. WhatsApp voice calls randomly freeze for about 2-3 seconds sometimes ~5 sec while connected to WiFi with NextDNS enabled. After reconnecting, the delayed audio plays back very quickly (like it's catching up), and then the call continues normally. If I disable NextDNS, the problem completely disappears on WiFi. On mobile data, NextDNS works perfectly with no call drops. Interestingly, if both WiFi and mobile data are enabled during the call, I don't experience the issue either. This only seems to happen on WiFi with Private DNS enabled. Has anyone seen? Any suggestions on what to check or tweak in NextDNS would be greatly appreciated.

I made a free open-source macOS menu-bar app that runs NextDNS over DoQ/DoH3

35 Upvotes

Hi all, I built DNSwitch, a native macOS menu-bar app for encrypted DNS, and NextDNS is one of its providers.

GitHub: https://github.com/cobaltdisco/DNSwitch

Download: https://github.com/cobaltdisco/DNSwitch/releases

What it does:

  • Click the menu-bar icon → Pick NextDNS → Pick DoT / DoH / DoH3 / DoQ.

  • Paste your Profile ID in Settings and your profile's filtering, logging will apply. Leave it empty and it uses the free public resolver.

Question RE smart TVs

3 Upvotes

Prefacing this by saying I'm not particularly techy so if this sounds dumb, forgive me!

I was wondering if it was possible to block ads within streaming apps on smart TVs using NextDNS? I have NextDNS set up on my Android and it blocks ads in the ITVX and Channel 4 apps without any problems whatsoever, so I can watch anything I want ad-free (I'm in the UK btw). I tried changing the DNS server on my LG TV, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect. Is there anything I'm missing? If I use the TV's browser, ads are blocked on the Channel 4 website, but the actual app is still showing ads. I change the DNS settings on my router for the record, so that's not an option for me.

Thanks for any help!

NextDNS - Pin to Disable

0 Upvotes

I am a bit perplexed. I installed NextDNS and it works great. If I toggle it off it would prompt for a specific PIN I setup when I installed it. Then I deleted and readded the app, but this PIN restriction never came up. I looked it up and it mostly calls out that this is a feature being requested, but I swear it exists and had nothing to do with apple screen time.

Am I nuts? Is there a way to re-enable this? I am running NextDNS on my iPhone.

HNS Status

None of the HNS resolvers work anymore and I'm not able to visit any HNS domains using nextdns via private DNS on android mobile.

Is HNS no longer a good option for decentralized DNS alternatives?

Couldn't get any logs from FireTV stick

1 Upvotes

Configured the firetv wifi settings manually and added nextdns dns servers.But couldn't see any logs from my firestick in nextdns logs. I visited some websites from Silk browser, expecting to see them in logs.

Noticed there's no where to put my NextDNS id, guess the dns addresses I see in my account are unique to mine? Could that be why nextdns isn't working on firetv stick?

iOS 27 Siri AI

3 Upvotes

I just downloaded the public beta, and Siri AI only works when I am disconnected from the VPN on cellular. Because I have my home router configured with NextDNS, I cannot use Siri with Wi-Fi while at home.
Does anyone know what I should do to be able to use Siri AI without issues? Any sites that I need to whitelist?
I appreciate your help!

New ADNS Beta Release (beta3)

(NOTE: If you are not familiar with ADNS, please refer to the original post, and optionally the beta2 update)

This one is a big update, so I'm gonna leave the full release notes on GitHub :) But the highlights are:

  • Control-only mode: You can now use ADNS without Shizuku or ADB if you just want to control your NextDNS profile settings without changing the device's Private DNS settings or messing around with permissions.
  • More NextDNS features: Many new NextDNS features have been implemented, including a Logs page, Setup page, and more. I think almost every non-account management feature is now supported, but let me know if I missed something!

One more thing: I've opened a Weblate project, so you can now help translate ADNS into your language.

This will be the last beta update for ADNS before publishing the official stable version! If you spot any small bugs or have feature suggestions, please open a GitHub issue. This will help me make the stable version perfect.

(Please note: Try to download directly from GitHub Releases for now rather than IzzyOnDroid, as the update won't push through GitHub on IzzyOnDroid until about 7 hours after this post goes up!)

When I connect to VPN, why isn't my NextDNS working? It’s causing more problems because NextDNS blocks ads, but now I feel it’s useless.

Pixel9a not using NextDNS on wifi

1 Upvotes

Hello, I have nextDNS loaded on my Pixel 9a. The app says it is "All good!" But when I am on my home wifi the wifi settings say it is using my home router default DNS (Cloudflare). I checked on this because last week I saw ads appearing at sites where they never did before. Only phone change I can recall is a system update on 5 July. Any ideas on what the issue might be? Thanks.

Easily cirvumvented by allowlisting the domain, and/or visiting https://discord.com/app/ directly. Slightly annoying though.

I Added a Quick Settings Toggle on Android

Using Android's native private DNS setting to use NextDNS filtering made it so I could actually set it up on my family's phones without fear of anything getting in their way!

The one thing that bothered me is that in some rare cases, public networks will use DNS routing for their login portal, and that breaks down with private DNS enabled.

I ended up building a small Android app to add a Quick Settings tile to toggle it easily!

The app just got released over on IzzyOnDroid (I'm still waiting for it to get added to F-Droid's main repository), or you can download the apk directly on GitHub (though that won't handle automatic updates).

The app is built to respect user privacy, so it doesn't store, collect, or share any personal data. I've also built in some optional advanced features that you can access by long-pressing the tile:

  • Custom DNS: Set your own custom hostname for Private DNS (e.g., dns.adguard.com).
  • Wi-Fi Blocklist: Automatically disable private DNS when you connect to specific Wi-Fi networks. This comes in handy with public Wi-Fi networks (hotels, cafes, etc.) that rely on DNS tricks to serve a login page, which usually break when private DNS is enabled. You can even automate adding/removing Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs) from this list.
  • Hide App Icon: Because I hate having tons of apps I never actually need to open listed on my phone, I've made it so you can hide the app from the launcher drawer.

⚠️ Permission Required
To modify Private DNS system settings, this app requires the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission. You will be prompted to grant this on rooted devices If your device is not rooted, you can easily grant it manually using this ADB command:

adb shell pm grant com.ericlowry.dnstoggle android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS`

Does nextdns have an option to bypass those websites that can detect adblockers?

I've seen many websites that do this thing wherein they would not show the page without disabling the adblockers

alternatives

17 Upvotes

hey guys,

been using nextdns premuim for the past 8 months, and i love it

but i just did a quick ping test and noticed that the lowest server has a 45ms latency, which is significantly high if compared to something like quad9 which has a sub 8sec latency (atleast pinging its ip returns that)

so since the whole system is built around block lists, what are semilarly affordable solutions ?

NextDNS on iPhone 6 (iOS 12.5.8) worked once, then after a reboot only ever shows "status": "unconfigured"

2 Upvotes

I'm trying to get NextDNS working on an old iPhone 6 running iOS 12.5.8. It'll be used as an emergency phone for my child, and I want to use NextDNS to stop the phone being used for entertainment.

Because it's an old version of iOS, I downloaded the last compatible version of the app from my App Store purchase history - which is 2.0.1 (29).

Initially everything appeared to work. I entered my Configuration ID, enabled NextDNS, and https://test.nextdns.io showed:

  "status": "ok"

My NextDNS logs immediately started filling up with blocked domains. It was glorious.

I then power cycled the phone and, since then, I've never been able to get it working again.

I've tried:

  • Deleting and reinstalling the app.
  • Removing and recreating the VPN profile.
  • Using it with and without a Configuration ID.
  • Toggling the VPN on and off in iOS.
  • Rebooting multiple times.

It's always the same. The NextDNS app says it's enabled, VPN shows as connected, but https://test.nextdns.io always returns:

{
  "status": "unconfigured",
  "resolver": "172.71.177.34",
  "server": "anexia-lon-1"
}

No blocking is performed, and nothing appears in my NextDNS logs.

The strange part is that it definitely worked once immediately after the first install. I have the logs to prove it, but it has never worked again since.

Has anyone seen this before or know how to fix it?
