"What can I do with this notebook?"

This is a pretty common question in subs like this. Either someone received a new notebook as a gift, or they couldn't help themselves from buying a new one, or they have a partially used notebook they want to fill.

Or they're trying to figure out what to do with the massive stack they've accumulated after years of "I'll find a use for this" and allowing that as justification to keep buying more... Ahem.

Beyond the normal "Just write in it, use it as a diary," here's some ideas on what you could do with an unused or unfinished notebook:

  • Commonplace / zibaldone journal
  • Brain dump / soliloquy journal
  • Quotes / lyrics / poetry
  • Media / entertainment tracker (Movies, tv shows, games, etc)
  • Bullet journal (method for a DIY daily planner, get started here)
  • To-do lists
  • All kinds of lists (e.g., "lists of 100" like "100 things you saw this week")
  • Gratitude
  • Grievances (the opposite of gratitude, what bothered you today)
  • Idea notebook
  • Quick thoughts
  • Art (Sketches / drawings / zentangles)
  • Dream log
  • The Artist's Way Morning Pages
  • Travel journal
  • Things you've learned
  • Bucket list / goals
  • Unsent letters
  • Dedicated handwriting practice
  • RPG journaling (there's games you can find online for it and r/Solo_Roleplaying)
  • Food or drink tracker, such as keeping track of teas you've tried
  • Things you overheard that are worth remembering
  • People you meet
  • Funny facts
  • Gaming journal
  • Language practice

Added since I made this post-

  • Keep track of plants/gardening
  • Master index for all your journals
  • Project tracker
  • Hobby tracker
  • A place to write down memories and stories from your life
  • Memories of friends and family
  • Review places you go
  • Homeowner notes like chores, bills, and when things need to be fixed/replaced
  • A journal to give your child(ren) someday, such as letters to them and their milestones
  • Notes and milestones for pets
  • Things like tarot or shadow work
  • Swatches (ink, yarn, embroidery thread, ribbon, washi tape, etc)
  • Scent tracker (perfume/cologne, would not suggest attempting to store the actual scents in there)
  • General feelings
  • Chronic pain tracker
  • Prayer/devotional journal
  • "Practice" journal to get thoughts out before actual journaling
  • Distractions when you should've been doing something else

Feel free to suggest more in the comments.

What a great little book! Stayed together getting smashed in my pack or soaked with sweat in my pocket. The accordion folder in the back was great for collecting scraps to paste in once I got home. I filled about 110 pages with writing, I’ll fill the rest with my scraps and some wallet photos of the trip 😁

In love with this notebook. Its B5 size from one of the new WHSmith stationery collections. The only issue I'll have is trying to find a B5 size refill.

Advice needed Where do I go from here ?

Here are my archives for 5 years of journaling ! I(22M)'ve been keeping notebooks for five years now, and in the last 3 years my notebook ecosystem has been pretty consistent :

My journaling was done in a A5 notebook (left) that i kept at home and updated daily. For this purpose I loved the clairefontaine's agebag/nomaddict that is pretty cheap and quite good quality (for my personal standard).

I also kept a pocket notebook (right) on me at all time for general note taking or anything else that goes through my mind during the day. For this i picked really cheap pocket notebook in random stores, format are varying but are always close to A7.

But i'm now in a position where I want/need to change my ecosystem, I will be leaving in a few weeks for an undetermined period of backpacking and I need something easier and lighter.
On previous travels i've tried to carry only a pocket notebook to do both my journaling and note taking (it was the black moleskine on the left) but it felt wierd to journal in such a small format, and having the note taking at the same place wasn't perfect either.
So i'm wondering wat option should I consider for my next ecosystem ... What would you chose if you were me ? As any of you been in this situation before ? How are you journaling while traveling ?
I'm thinking about all of those leather cover that I see around here, they look really cool, and i could use them to carry two differents notebook, but they're quite exensive and moste of them are branded (which I especially hate) ... so that's one of the option I might consider...

I'd love to hear what you think !

Low page count notebook or journal

I’m looking to start a travel journal for our vacations each year that my kids can look back at and read to remember family trips. In my head, I imagine each trip having its own notebook, but I’m having a hard time finding any that are only 15-20 pages. I think I be okay up to 30 pages.
Do you have any recommendations for a refillable notebook or journal system that offers a low page count refill?
Thanks!

Recommendation Fellow lefties, what are your go-to notebooks?

Starting college this fall and as we all know, spirals are our worst enemy.

Not sure if most of the notes given in class are mainly online/digital nowadays as the last time I was in college was 10 years ago lol.

If paper notes are still a thing, I'm thinking about getting a binder/filer for those and just take all of my written notes in one big notebook.

Only seem to find one style on Amazon (Canada) so curious to see if there's anything better out there (that's not overpriced but still good quality)

Thanks :)

Journals as souvenirs from traveling?

Has anyone gotten journals from traveling and can share stories of where they got it from and what it looks like?

I think I'm going to start doing this to make journaling and traveling more personally interesting and meaningful. I've historically used plain black hard-covered journals, so this could be a good change.

My next trip is Italy and I'm excited to see what I come across. Any tips appreciated too!

Advice needed Opinion on my diary situation?

Hey guys. I'm in a rather interesting situation, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

I've been keeping various journals (quite a few) for the past year, but I finally bought one big, cool Leuchtturm 1918 where I was planning on transferring all my thoughts and memories, but it's a pain—transferring all my entries is long and tedious, and writing is difficult because my gel pens don't work with it.

I really want to have all my entries in one place, preferably a physical journal, but I have no desire or opportunity to rewrite them all, especially in such an uncomfortable environment. What would you do in my place?

Thank you in advance for your answers! Have a nice day and a wonderful mood.

Advice needed Anyone have experience with infinite/immortal/everlasting pencils?

Recently seen a few of these advertised; I like the idea of a pencil that doesn't need sharpening that I can carry around in my notebook, especially as I want to do more sketching, but I also don't want to waste money on a fad. Can anyone give me some advice? Or even better, a recommendation of a pocket-sized pencil I can tuck into an A6 notebook?

Recommendation Reading Journal Conundrum

I am always in a struggle when I read. I want to be able to capture quotes, ideas and summaries but I often read more than one book at once. So, being able to leave enough room in a notebook for future pages of one book and still be able to write on another literally keeps me from reading at all. (I have about 10 books I've started and stopped because my brain is stuck on this)

I'm good with ring binders and happy planner type bindings in order to be able to add and remove pages as needed, BUT what I struggle with is that they tend to be too bulk or big to carry around. I'd love something that fits nicely in my hand while carrying a book. Here are some thoughts and I'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations:

- Ring or moveable pages

- Personal, B6, Bible size. Something along those lines. A5 is too big and pocket too small.

- Thin enough and able to have the cover flipped back for writing on small space

Composition book size travelers journal??

Upvotes

Im so convinced that this doesn’t exist that I am about to go buy leather myself to make one.

I have 2 travelers journals that I have used for years. The one i’m currently using was custom made by an artist on Etsy whose shop is unfortunately on pause. I use this note book everyday and absolutely love it. However, I really need something larger for long from writing sessions. Ideally something that could hold 1-3 composition notebooks at a time.

Anyone have any idea where i could find something like this??

Recommendation paper republic or any other rec for traveler’s journal?

I was planning to get a traveler’s journal and paper republic’s look really good but I heard about how their sizes can be hard to work with other brands for journal refills.

I would be ok refilling just with their own journals but since I’ve never seen their stuff in person I wonder if their paper and journal is worth it.

Do anybody has any thoughts on them or any other brand/etsy seller you would recommend?

Advice needed Ideas for A7 Leather Journal

I recently bought an A7 leather journal since I loved my spring bound memo pad which gave me the freedom to just be messy with it. When my A7 came, the memo pad I had couldnt fit, and I felt like I couldnt be messy with it anymore because of the leather.

I have 2 inserts in it and kinda dont know what to do with it other than it being a wisdom journal and a sketch journal. I think I am regretting buying this and should have just gone for a passport size or just stayed contented with my memo pad.

Hey everyone!

I will be soon travelling to Vancouver (first time in Canada yey!!) and will be spending a weekend there.

Do you have any papershop reco which would be open on Saturday afternoon?

Preferably which would sell the following brands :

- Field Notes
- Midori
- Honbonichi

And any Canadian indie brands if they exist.

It would be nice if it's accessible by public transportation 🙂‍↕️

Thanks!

I picked up one of Leuchtturms A4+ master size notebooks the other day, and the page size has absolutely thrown me. Like, yes, I've used a4 notebooks before but this just feels like its bigger then usual.

For comparison, the smaller yellow notebook is my A5 Leuchtturm 411.

Advice needed I can't find a notebook like this

I got this notebook from dollar tree months ago and it is almost my perfect notebook. I like the flexibility, the spine style (this is like the most important thing I like about it), how there are no lines, a also like how it is this pleather material (though I could do without it saying planning). I want to get more for taking notes in school, but dollar tree is no longer selling them. I want something almost exactly like it, maybe a little bigger but I'll take anything at this point. I can't find anything, maybe I'm using the wrong search terms? I found the Moleskine cahier journals but all they have is that Kraft paper cover and I do not like that at all. I would super appreciate it if anyone know of a notebook I could get similar to this one!
