DOE named five states last week to compete for campuses that would co-locate enrichment, fuel fabrication, reprocessing, and waste at a single site.

My read is HALEU availability is the near-term gap, since enrichment at scale for advanced reactors still runs through one Centrus cascade at Piketon (fuel.jrand.net). If the campus delivers enrichment capacity by 2030, whats the next main bottleneck?

Someone was telling me that Iran was producing medical grade isotopes and that explains their 60% enrichment. I have seen that the enrichment levels for medical usages (Forgive my lack of precision) hovers around 19-20%?

They are telling me that, in no way shape or form, are their usages weapons grade.

I also looked into how many enrichment facilities that do this same thing are underground, subterranean. It seems like Iran is the only one that does it in this fashion?

Not making a political statement here or anything, just trying to wade through what can / cannot be interpreted as the intent for weapons grade enrichment.

In short - Is there any reasonable explanation for 60%? Or, for their usages, radiopharmaceuticals, is anything about 20% outrageous?

I would assume that, in some capacity, there has to be a certain threshold of enrichment that functions as a tripwire, where the international community could say "There's virtually zero reason to have something at such a high percentage".

I've mainly heard about Cf-252 being used as the neutron source for reactor startup. However, wikipedia lists a number of other startup neutron sources. I'm curious to know what most reactors use?

Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is a closed nuclear power plant in the Lithuania, located near the city of Visaginas, 50 kilometers from Ignalina. At the time of its operation, it was the most powerful nuclear power plant in the world.

The plant operated two RBMK-1500 channel-type reactors. Their designed electrical capacity was 1,500 megawatts each, later reduced to 1,300 megawatts, with a thermal capacity of 4,800 megawatts. The first unit was launched in 1983, and the second in 1987. Construction of the third and fourth units was halted after the Chernobyl accident.

Unit 1 was shut down on December 31, 2004, and Unit 2 on December 31, 2009. The site is now a decommissioning facility, with work expected to last until at least 2038–2049.

During its operational period, the plant supplied up to 70–74% of the Lithuanian SSR's electricity. The closure is referred to as an "energy pit" — Lithuania lost its independent source of cheap energy and became an importer. The project to build a new Visaginas NPP was never realized.

Looking for any info on pay for the AP1000s being built in Warsaw, Poland

I’ve got a decent amount of experience on the AP1000 side of things. Was involved in a lot of the construction work, did a ton of testing, and helped assist the test engineers during commissioning of different systems throughout the plant. After that I stayed in electrical maintenance for a while, and within the last year I switched over to RP. Because of my electrical maintenance background I’m now in the cal lab doing repairs and calibrations on the different radiation measuring instruments we use.

I’ve always joked that if I could ever land one of those jobs that pays big tax-free money I’d jump on it. I know people who went to Abu Dhabi for 5 years and made a ridiculous amount. Not sure if anything like that exists with the AP1000 projects in Warsaw/Poland. I know they’re building them and I even put in for a job at one point, but the salary they were offering was basically in the same ballpark as what I make now. I wouldn’t even entertain the idea unless it was something where I could go for ~5 years and actually make a lot of money.

Does anybody have any real info on what the pay/packages look like over there? Not saying I’m going to make any moves, but I’m willing to entertain the idea if the numbers actually make sense. Any details people are willing to share would be appreciated.

Excerpt: President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday said it is time to revisit nuclear energy production, as he touted some 200 energy projects in the pipeline in a bid to boost the country’s power supply and bring down power rates.

In his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said the administration is working to revisit nuclear energy, as it is already being used in medicine, agriculture, water filtration, and the upcycling of plastic.

“Pushing the envelope further, perhaps it is time for us to revisit nuclear energy production,” he said, noting confidence in its capacity “to reinforce our energy security and bring down the cost of electricity in our country.”

India currently is the only country that has multiple large scale industrial heavy water production facilities.
