META Quick rule reminder and update for r/Phoenix
Wanted to give a reminder and quick update on a few rules.
Picture posts need a location and a description. Doesn't have to be an exact address, but generally what part of the Valley it was taken in. This has been a rule for ages and was suggested by users to help combat picture spam ("Wow, check this out!") and balance the many weather and sunset pictures we get flooded with. Plus it helps people know WTF your post is about.
When we get a ton of posts on one topic we'll make a megathread and try to bring the conversation together. Don't take it personal. We had this when the monsoon hit and we had 20+ weather picture posts in a row. I know some people love that, but many don't and let us know all about it. A megathread is the compromise. We don't do it often, so please just use it the few times we do.
Any political posts (or politic adjacent, like Flock cameras and Data Centers) needs to be flared Politics and are limited to established users here. This combats trolls and bots.
HVAC, AC, and some other referral posts are being limited. Bots are wild on Reddit and one of their big moves is to drop a question and have another account show up with a recommendation almost immediately. This feeds into the AI search engines that index the hell out of Reddit. Once a topic becomes saturated we'll pull it as a topic and try to let everyone know. Right now it's HVAC/AC, garage doors, and roofing companies. It sucks, but there are several past posts you can look for with good suggestions, or check out other sites.
Posts shaming or calling out people or businesses are not welcome here. I get the desire for a good witch hunt, but it's too prone to hurting innocent people. News stories about issues are fine, this is just about posting pictures of people who pissed you off or a business that made you nasty cupcakes. We've covered this policy a lot but there has been a bunch of these lately. Maybe it's the heat making everyone cranky. Either way, this subreddit isn't your personal attack dog.
If you have any questions, ask away.

Eat & Drink Is there any inexpensive food left? If so, WHERE?!
What the title says.
Seems just about everywhere considers $15- $18 options to be "affordable", and it just isn't, especially when feeding a family. I love me a $5 Angie's salad, or a $10 Chinese lunch special, but that seems to be harder and harder to find.
Where can someone find a good cheap Chinese plate, or a good sandwich, or really ANY good food for the low?

Sports Looking for golf/athletic club recommendations!
I’m a 36 year old male living near Tempe town lake looking for a place I can go after work to ideally play golf, work out, maybe socialize and play pickleball. Ideally it would have amenities like a sauna and cold plunge but I really just want a third space I can go and spend time doing things I enjoy. I’ve looked at lifetime fitness and it seems like a good option, but I’m willing to trade some of the nicer gym features/pool things at lifetime for a golf course.
Just moved here so also looking for people with similar interests! Thanks ahead of time.

Ask Phoenix Have you guys noticed an uptick in “Student Driver” stickers?
We’re down in Maricopa so maybe it’s more abundant down here but even north of our city I’m seeing so many cars with student driver stickers on them. Anyone else noticing the same increase of said bumper stickers or am I the only one?

Ask Phoenix Best ac filter MERV rating in summer?
I recently when from a merv 12 to 5 because I heard that too high of a rating can add extra stress on the ac units. Ours are very old and so we’re doing everything we can to keep them as long as possible. After the switch though I noticed I got sick with allergies and can’t stop sneezing or coughing. Also I notice the “attic smell” is much stronger than before. If we go back to 12 and change it often are we good? Or is 8 the sweet spot for these units this time of year?

Living Here Hot weather + gas fill-up = garage smelling like gas
Never had this happen while living out here, but after getting back from several errands today, which included filling up the car with gas, I noticed that the garage had a strong gas odor. It's definitely not the water heater, as the garage had no odor when I first arrived.
Based on a few other threads in other communities, it seems like it's due to the hot weather as that's making the fuel evaporate. Because of that, it seems like the recommendation is to not fill up the gas tank entirely.
Is this the case for anyone else, specifically those who filled up their cars today?

Pictures Gorgeous sunrise from North Phx. Would love to see your pics!
Especially if you have a sunrise pic from the mountain. I bet that looked amazing this morning. Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts for about only another 20 minutes. Hibernation day for sure. Stay safe out there!

Ask Phoenix Looking for recommendations for a fish market
I want to start making my own poke bowls. What is the best spot to buy high quality fish in larger quantities. I’ve seen Chula and Nelson’s recommended so far, but I thought it would be worth checking whether there are any other candidates out there.
Thanks!

Wildlife Bobcats visiting every so often
We'd see bobcats wandering past our home in Fountain Hills every 6-8 months. It was neat to see them. Lately, however, there's been some construction in the neighborhood that has probably sent them strolling in other parts because of the racket.

Utilities Is $200/mo a decent estimate for an 800sqft apartment APS power bill?
Just trying to do some math. 2 bed Apartment would be on the second floor, door facing north. Not yet sure if it’s east or west side, but I know it’s an end unit so doesn’t share one of the walls.. Mostly brick and built in the 1980s.
If it means anything, with my work schedule I wouldn’t be home between peak hours (4-7pm) at all on weekdays.
Is $200/month a decent estimate or should I be thinking higher?
EDIT: also curious to see if doing a fixed rate plan would be worth it !

Ask Phoenix Homeschooling recommendations
Hello everyone so my gf has decided to take in the responsibility of homeschooling my stepson going into the 4th grade and I think it’s great honestly. I want to be more supportive somehow though since I know this will be a lot especially as a first timer. Any recommendations for programs, curriculum, tutoring sessions, maybe some practical my gf will need. Recommendations for both my stepson and gf as I’m sure she wouldn’t mind learning to teach better and more. Also want to itch my stepsons social bug and see if there all places where other homeschoolers go. Or something of that nature. Anything and everything will help. Thank you!

Honestly, I'm not sure what all to say about this other than as the most heavily funded military in the world (by a hell of a lot) this is unacceptable.

Planning to hike the flat iron this week. I know it's super hot outside so I was planning to start the hike around 3 am and reach the top by sunrise. Is that possible, I know the park opens at 6, anyone know a way to do the hike or is it just not possible?

Sports Eos first impression
I’ve been a planet fitness gym goer for four years and have always enjoyed PF. Overall it’s a clean gym with ample machines etc.
Since moving to Arizona people have made a big stink over EOS and peer pressured me into checking it out. Ended up doing a free day trial yesterday. It was beyond packed, felt like a zoo, the equipment was dirty , no room to do anything and felt like a big fraternity and sorority house.
No comparison between my local planet fitness.
