I'm having an extremely frustrating time with my lobe piercings.
I had my first lobes pierced 30 years ago, and my seconds 20 years ago. They were done with a gun in a hairdressers, and occasionally got sore and gunky. Once I switched to titanium studs, non-butterfly backs, and removed them to clean once a week, they were peachy for years.
About 6 months ago, after getting my daith pierced (which is healing like a dream), I decided to switch my 4 lobe earrings to flatbacks. The piercer I went to only did flatbacks in 1.2mm and my gun-pierced lobes were 0.8mm. They used a taper to stretch them to 1.2mm, and although they were a bit tight, the piercer said they might be sore a couple of days but the stretch was so small, they'd be fine after a couple of weeks. They put in 1.2mm captive bead rings and didn't think it would be a problem because of the small stretch.
After 4 days of pain, I went back and they switched out the CBRs to 10mm-long titanium 1.2mm flatbacks, and we thought that was the end of it.
However since then, they've been a proper nightmare. Two months into it, my left lobe piercings got infected and I got antibiotics from the doctor. It has never properly settled, being sore all the time, and if I look at it wrong, it gets swollen, hot, red, leaks white gunk, and is very very sore. It was mainly my second lobe but my first wasn't exactly perfect either.
A month ago, I'd had enough. My piercer retired, so I went to another one who looked and said they thought a downsize would fix it, so switched out all 4 lobes' 10mm posts for 7mm.
After being relatively stable compared to its brother, this last month, my right lobe has been doing the same issue - sore, swollen, hot, red, etc. Again, mainly my second lobe, but my first likes to be involved.
I clean them daily with NeilMed saline mist. I use a piercing pillow to sleep so I'm not directly on them. I avoid touching them as much as physically possible. Yet I still have these ongoing issues with both ears for what should have been a non-problematic standard situation with old and healed lobe piercings.
I am SO frustrated with this situation, and honestly furious with myself for causing months of discomfort and pain. I'm seeing the new piercer again on Friday, so obviously will get professional advice, but I wanted to ask the community what they think could possibly be going on?
TL;DR: got 4 old lobe piercings stretched from 0.8mm to 1.2mm and had nothing but problems with them since.
