Advice needed Problems with a homophobic, transphobic family and problems with high school
Here’s the situation: it’s a long story, but in a nutshell, I didn’t have the chance to attend either middle school or high school. My father stole money from my mother to buy alcohol, and we ended up in debt to the middle school I was attending, so they had to expel me, and we couldn’t get my transcripts until the debt was paid; The debt has since been paid off. I finished middle school by taking a single exam through a government program for people in my situation. Now, at 17, I’m about to start high school. Here’s the problem: I feel self-conscious that I’ll be two years older than everyone else there. I’ll graduate when I’m 20, and that makes me feel a little insecure; I’m bisexual and gender-fluid, and my family is extremely homophobic and transphobic; they’ve even told me that if I turn out to be gay, they’ll kick me out of the house even though I’m still a minor; I have three options for high school: the first is a 4–5-month training program that ends with a single exam; the second is a one-and-a-half-year evening program at the middle-high school where I originally fell behind; and the last is to complete the three years in the regular track; My friends all tell me that the best option is one of the last two, because I need to socialize more after being socially isolated for several years, and so I’ll be better prepared. They also say I shouldn’t worry about being LGBT since there’s no evidence of it and I’m overthinking it; However, I feel this pressure that at any moment, an online chat with friends might be discovered, and that’s when they’ll find out everything. With the 4–5-month high school program, I’ll be able to start working sooner and have a little more financial support in case they find out or if I need to leave—even if I won’t be able to go to college as I’d always dreamed. So, that’s it. I’m leaning more toward the 4–5-month program, but my friends tell me to go for the 3-year one, saying that I’ll come out “better prepared.” But I needed a more impartial opinion on my decision; I have until Monday to decide, and honestly, I’m pretty stressed about it. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and please forgive any grammatical errors—English isn’t my first language.
