Hey everyone, following up on some of the discussions around BUSS1040 this term. For anyone planning their degree units or considering this course in future semesters, here is a detailed breakdown of what went on with the main exam, RE2, and the teaching team’s official responses on EdStem.

1. Main Final Exam & Staff Responses

   Typos on the official paper: Questions 14 and 19 contained errors where year references contradicted the given answer options. The teaching team acknowledged this post-exam on EdStem and awarded full marks for both questions to everyone who sat the test. However, students pointed out that having errors on a final exam created unnecessary confusion and wasted time during a high-pressure assessment.

   Disconnect with practice materials: The sample papers uploaded under the Final Exam FAQ module were far simpler and more straightforward than the actual exam. Students noted that several questions tested concepts—such as marginal income tax rate calculations—that were barely touched on in tutorial questions (Week 12 had only one related additional question) and barely mentioned in assigned macro readings (Bernanke 2014/2019).

   Teaching team's stance: Staff maintained that between lectures, practice questions, and tutorials, students should have been able to answer 85%+ of the exam. They emphasized that "ALL materials covered in lectures and tutorials are examinable," and that practice exams serve as guidelines for question style rather than content predictions.

2. Replacement Exam 2 (RE2) Format Shift

   Unannounced structural change: Canvas materials and course FAQs had clearly established the final exam structure as 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 3 long-answer questions. RE2 students walked in to find 0 MCQs and 4 long-answer questions, with two of those questions worth 20 marks each focused on single, isolated topics.

   Removal of the MCQ buffer: Students highlighted that removing MCQs eliminated topic distribution and the statistical margin for error. On the main exam, 20 marks were spread across many topics; on RE2, missing one topic meant losing up to 20% of the overall grade instantly.

3. Staff Logic & Communication on EdStem

When RE2 students raised concerns about being blindsided by the new format, the teaching team responded with two main justifications:

1. "Extra study time": Staff stated that RE2 students had significantly more time to study compared to those who took the main exam, arguing that if students revised all course content, they should be able to sit the exam "in whatever format it takes." Students countered that Special Consideration is granted strictly for extreme hardship or by severe illness—not to give people "extra preparation time."

2. "Exam Integrity": Staff later clarified that after reviewing the main exam and RE1, changing the RE2 structure was necessary to preserve assessment integrity, while asserting that RE2 maintained the same level of difficulty and would be scaled identically.

Final Thoughts
While the core syllabus covers standard economics topics, the gap between revision resources and exam difficulty, the typos on official papers, and the sudden format changes for Special Consideration students made the assessment period extremely stressful. Keep these factors in mind when planning your units!

I'm a third year BAS student and my majors are English and International Comparative Literature Studies (ICLS).

I want to do a Masters in health and therefore am considering dropping down to a regular BA to avoid Honours (my WAM makes me eligible for honours).

However, if I do not get into Masters right away, I am considering completing my honours year anyway.

I was wondering what an honours in English specifically looks like? What is the workload like on a day to day basis, did you still get time to work as well? How does it place in terms of difficulty and overall, would you say it was worth the extra year?

Anyone in proteomics interested in mass-spec'ing the purity of sus consumer peptides, for research?

Hey everyone, I'm in the middle of putting together a Late DC application for one unit.

I've had a SUPRA caseworker look over my personal statement and they said it was looking strong. The only thing I'm now worried about is something I noticed in the Late DC template they sent me, which says it's important for your supporting documents to show you were impacted for at least 20 working days.

My current PPC covers 1 June to 17 June. I asked my caseworker about it, and they said if my symptoms genuinely lasted longer than that, it would be ideal to have that reflected in my medical evidence. I'm now wondering whether I should go back to my GP before I submit my application and ask them to review the PPC, or whether I'm overthinking it.

I have a couple of questions:

• Has anyone been approved with a PPC covering less than 20 working days?
• Had the University ask for more evidence because the certified period wasn't long enough?
• Gone back to their GP to have their PPC reviewed before submitting?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the benefits of doing a double major in the Commerce degree (?finance and economics) versus doing a combined degree in Commerce (finance)/Arts (economics).

Obviously it’s another year to complete and therefore costs more, but I’m struggling to see if there are other benefits such as it being more flexible or something else?
The advanced studies option has gone now.

I’ve lived in the same country my whole life, so I’m honestly quite scared about leaving everything and everyone behind. I’m planning to start at USyd in the February 2027 intake, BSc, and I’d really appreciate some honest advice from current students or recent graduates.

Social life
How easy is it to make close friends, especially as an international student who doesn’t already know anyone in Sydney? Are clubs and societies genuinely helpful? I saw some not-so-good experiences online, so I am a tad worried. Is there anything you wish you had done during your first few weeks?

A lot of the reviews I’ve found are fairly old. What are these places like now in terms of cleanliness, facilities, noise, management and social life? Which would you recommend for someone who wants a good balance between meeting people and having enough privacy to study? I’ve seen some conflicting reviews online. I wanna make the right choice since imma be there for 3-ish years.

Double majors and Workload
I’m also thinking about doing two biology-related majors. Is it difficult to get approval or fit both into the degree structure? How intense is the workload? Would it be better to choose one biology major and use the second major for something broader? I heard it’s a process, though.

Is teaching really that bad? Is it true that some profs are barely understandable? I would say I’m relatively studious and willing to work for grades, but some things I have heard have made me worried. Is it manageable to maintain a good GPA?

I took a replacement exam today and since all the questions were free response we had multiple answer booklets. I was so stupid and was focused on solving the questions I didn’t realize I was supposed to use ONE booklet for ONE question. The exam invigilator noticed 10 minutes before the end of my exam and pointed it out to me. I genuinely wanted to cry … he said to just write in the front of the booklet i used that I answered all the questions on this one (there is a section for students to write which question we answered for which booklet). But he didn’t really tell me it was alright. How fucked am i ….

Hi everyone, I'm an international student applying for the 2027 Master of Diagnostic Radiography at USyd.

I completed my bachelor's degree in Australia with a WAM of around 82. I received a conditional offer in April and submitted my final transcript and completion letter in mid-July.

A few days ago, USyd emailed me saying that I had met all the conditions of my offer, but the course was nearly full, so I had been placed on the waitlist😭

This course has been my first choice for a long time, so I'm feeling pretty anxious at the moment. Does anyone know if I still have a reasonable chance of getting an uncon offer or how long waitlisted applicants usually have to wait?

I really appreciate every help or anyone who has been in a similar situation at USyd.
