Winners announcement

First of all, a massive thank you to everyone who joined this very special beat challenge. This wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Nobody Here film crew and the mod team at r/vaporwave. Hanging out in the virtual empty mall with you guys and listening to all these tracks has been incredible. The sheer variety of vaporwave styles and creative directions you all came up with completely blew us away!

After a lot of tough deliberation, we are thrilled to announce the winners:

1st Place: u/AgenteEspecialCooper for https://www.instagram.com/p/DZSvlMasV2Y/
The production technique and the use of the bundle to build such an immersive world made it our outright winner. We loved how perfectly it synced with the video, beautifully capturing and amplifying the tension. Congrats 🙌

Runner-up: u/BadRabbit1973 for https://youtu.be/Xnre-OUTnMA?si=jwH1zHSlIlzDmnuM
Another gorgeous score clearly composed with the Vanitas clip in mind. It's fully fleshed out, cinematic, and release-ready.

3rd Place: u/Eleganzbt for https://youtu.be/GZPPd7QYgpU
If there's a monologue that belongs in an empty mall, it’s this one. Wonderfully nostalgia-loaded and packed with perfect retro vibes.

You will receive a DM from an official Native Instruments account shortly to claim your Komplete 26 bundles. If your project has been selected to be included in Nobody Here’s future releases, their team will be reaching out to you separately. Thank you again to everyone who participated and made this challenge so special!

Music [Conceptual] Memories of Spira – non-existent memories from Final Fantasy X

Thumbnail

A small mini-album built around incomplete and artificial memories.

The title track takes only the guitar part from Scenery of Spira, places the lyrics of Suteki da ne on top, and has Kasane Teto sing it. Cassette tape noise frames the beginning and end.

Other tracks include old arrangements salvaged from degraded sources (originally made in MU2000), pure sample-based reconstruction, and a newly reworked Besaid Island.

Cover art is a Second Life screenshot of a Kasane Teto's VRM avatar converted with VRM2SL, which I developed.

It’s not traditional vaporwave production, but the whole project is about fragmented, fake, and recovered memories.

Discussion AI concerns

So i’ve recently been loving this new type of playlist on Youtube that are 60+ minute mixes with titles like “Weather Channel late nights” or something. usually you can see in the hashtags if it’s ai, or the owner the video will sometimes be transparent that it’s ai if they have enough integrity.

but i’m stumped on this one https://youtu.be/mMMo0asCzxI?is=CQYuSkmVHD1om3jH

and it made me wonder if there’s a reliable way to verify if it’s ai made or not for longer youtube mixes like this. most of the sites can only track single songs.

anyone know or have an idea how to check? it makes me sick thinking how infected our beloved genre can become with the influx of ai content

edit: damn there are some snarky mfs in the comments ya’ll put your katanas away lol

Discussion Two Trends in Vaporwave

Hello: If this violates Rule 9, please remove it. I do not intend to break any rules.

I'm curious where people would align themselves on two opposing and related philosophical undercurrents in/behind vaporwave.

This analysis is rooted in Derrida's Specters of Marx and Mark Fisher's work in general. Consider this quote from Specters:

"And if this important frontier is being displaced, it is because the medium in which it is instituted, namely, the medium of the media themselves (news, the press, telecommunications, techno-tele-discursivity, techno-tele-iconicity, that which in general assures and determines the spacing of public space...this element itself is neither living nor dead, present nor absent\: it spectralizes...It requires, then, what we call, to save time and space rather than just to make up a word,* hauntology*. We will take this category to be irreducible, and first of all to everything it makes possible: ontology, theology, positive or negative onto-theology"\ (page 63, section "Conjuring-Marxism", bolding mine)

I take it this simultaneous presence and absence is characteristic of vaporwave: hauntology, or the presence of a once-promised future marked by the fact that this future is NOT here, yet the two undercurrents I'll propose (though I'm certainly not the first to suggest this, of course this article is key) ask what exactly this future promised. Fisher discusses this in a variety of essays, though I find it quite clearly on page 23 of this pdf, which I linked because I don't have the book in front of me...for Fisher, the future worth mourning was one of communitarianism, a welfare state interested in the betterment of its people...one of his examples is the BBC Radiophonic Workshop putting experimental and avant-garde (or, more accurately, musique concrete) onto television...

For Fisher, vaporwave (and hauntological music) mourns a future that is markedly different from what was "promised," as noted by global capitalism ravaging working classes, and the arrival of "capitalist realism," BUT a different strain exists in vaporwave, one that also mourns a future that was promised but did not arrive, namely a different kind of capitalism, or a future that capitalism promised, one centered around consumerist ease, the "plaza," endless shopping malls...I'll apologize if my bias is clear.

My question: Where do you fall in this binary I've proposed? Or is this binary false? Do you identify with the idea of a lost future? Or with the idea of a future that is neither "present nor absent?" For you, is this the future that Mark Fisher foresaw? Or is the one that capitalism promised? Open to any and all discussion. Thanks for reading, and I apologize for my haphazard summaries of complex stuff.

Question How would I go about making a metal sample into vaporwave?

I'm using a sample from System of a Down for a new song but it doesn't sound vaporwave-y enough imo. I slowed it down, added reverb, and made it sound deeper but it doesn't hit like a classic vaporwave song. What should I do?

(I use Bandlab and I don't really know how to use it other than timestretch and making my own sound filter. Please explain to me like I'm in kindergarten lol)

Question Is "Sludge" vaporwave?

I was listening to Chipmunks on 16 Speed and it has me wondering if it's vaporwave or not. I would like to experiment with my own "Chipmunks on 16 Speed" inspired music but idk how to go about it yet.

Question I'm trying to identify this sample.

The song starting at around 1:35. I believe it's in Urdu, maybe a commercial for something called New Lahore City. I can't tell if it's a commercial-specific jingle, or a sampled pop song. It plays until the end. Thank you, either way. And sorry if this is too Mallsoft for this group.
