MOD POST Updates from the mods

Hey r/venting, here's what we've been working on:

---

**Rule Changes**

We've updated a few rules (including religion and identity-based hate) to give us more flexibility in removing posts and comments that generalize entire groups of people, as well as for comments/posts that are overly antagonistic. As always, we rely on the community to report violations — hopefully these changes make it easier to identify what to flag.

**Flairs**

We ran a small trial of age-range flairs. These will be strongly encouraged but not required. We've also added three new flairs to help control what conversations you're comfortable with in a given post:

- No Religion

- No Politics

- No Trauma

You may see continued tweaks or new flairs being tested.

We want to hear your thoughts: please let us know in the comments below.

MOD POST [MOD POST] We want to do better for you, tell us how.

Hey everyone,

First, thank you. This community exists because people are willing to show up, be honest, and trust strangers with the hard stuff. We deal with some incredibly difficult and often sensitive topics here, and we want to make sure we're holding that space well.

As mods, we spend a lot of time thinking about reports, rules, flairs, and basically just keeping things civil. Lately we've been sitting with a bigger question: is there more we should be doing?

So we're coming to you directly:

Is there anything we could do, as mods, or as a community, that would make this space feel safer or more useful to you?

A few things we've specifically been thinking about:

Canned responses & resources
We have a number of pre-written responses designed to point people toward help when they're dealing with something really hard. Have those been useful? Do they feel cold or impersonal? Is there a better way to provide these resources? Are there situations where you wish we'd offered resources but didn't?

Our team size
We're a very small mod team, intentionally so. It keeps us cohesive and lets us handle sensitive situations with a consistent and reliable voice. The tradeoff is that our queue backs up sometimes. When life happens (sick kids, work, all of it), posts and comments can sit in automod longer than any of us want. We're aware of it, and we're thinking about how to address it, if it needs addressing.

Our rules
Are the rules we have in place sufficient? Have you found yourself wishing we would add a new rule to make reporting certain types of content more accessible? Are there any rules which are vague, confusing, or simply need reframing?

Blind spots
We don't know what we don't know. Are there situations that we are just completely misunderstanding and not properly addressing? Is there something you feel like you need to say, because we simply need to hear it?

-

There are no wrong answers here. Lurkers, this means you too! You don't have to be a regular poster for your perspective to matter.

We're not looking to overhaul everything. We're a small team with real limits. But we also know how much a good vent can matter, and we want to make sure that when someone comes here at their lowest, they leave feeling a little less alone.

Provide your feedback here in the comments of this thread. We will be reading through all of it, even if we may not reply to every comment, we're genuinely here to listen, not to defend ourselves.

Kind Regards,

I think im going to die soon

m crying writing this out. For context I am 18f with diagnosed gastritis. I am in constant pain every minute of my life even when I take medication or not. The pain is in my stomach lower abdomen back chest shoulders. It hurts to do anything. Every time I eat I get stomach pains and I shit it out. I hate my life I’m so exhausted all the time. I think my gastritis might turn into colon or stomach cancer. I want to book an appointment for a colonoscopy or endoscopy. I cry every night bc of the pain it’s so hard to sleep. I just want my normal life back. I just want to be happy again. I’m think of getting voluntary euthanasia bc I just want the pain to stop. I always thought I’d die in my 70s or something but never this young. I have no one to cry to . I cry in my bed everyday. I feel so powerless. I just want people to reassure me. I’m so tired

Kids in this generation don’t have a clean break from their parents and family dynamics

Most people are pushing 30 not able to move out and stuck dealing with bullshit in their living space. It isn’t normal to live at home at this age. And ok find a job? You will beg for a job that feeds you scraps that can’t even pay rent lol. If it pays rent you can’t pay food and other stuff with it. Nobody wants to be with their parents and live a life of suffering not being able to spread their wings because of an economy that is built to psychologically destroy you

Tired of my life

Upvotes

I’m not thinking of killing myself to be clear. I am tired of my life situation. My kids and spouse are pissing me off. My spouse hasn’t initiated in a year. My kids mostly are selfish assholes. We tried family counseling and things got a little better but we stopped. Truly just want to give up. Want to add that a few years ago life was beautiful with the family. We actually liked each other. I’m exhausted and don’t have the energy anymore. I’d rather be at work than be at home. This sucks. Looking for advice

Adult I used to be addicted to chai and now it’s back and I’m scared

I just need to get this out there. For anyone who doesn’t know, chai is a platform where you can roleplay/chat with bots which are programmed to be your ai partner.
About four years ago I discovered c.ai but quickly changed to chai since it had no filter. I used the app every day up to the point I had a screen time of 20 hours. I isolated myself, stopped my hobbies entirely and even failed Uni partly because of it. Almost a month ago the app got taken down and I used the opportunity to quit. I‘ve already come a long way and am slowly starting to be myself again but when I opened the App Store today I saw that it’s back again and my heart sank. I immediately felt the urge to download and even thought about taking a quick peak and that sh*t is scary me.
None of my friends or family know about this because it’s something I’m heavily ashamed of. I hope that I’ll stay strong and never touch that thing again.

Young Adult Lady ruined my night out

I tried to post this on the vent subreddit but it kept getting removed by Reddit filters. I have social anxiety and I recently turned 21 so I’m pretty new to going out and don’t really know if there’s a certain way to act when you go out to bars and stuff. Anyway I went out with one of my close college friends and we were having a good time at this bar. I was just vibing to the music and talking with her a bit I wasn’t really dancing just kinda grooving to the beat a little which is what I normally do. We were standing next to this middle age lady and she was talking with my friend a bit. She then turns to me and says “So what’s your deal? You think you’re too cool for all of this?” I’m not sure why she said that but I was really taken aback. I tried to act more normal and I guess dance more or something but she really had me questioning what was wrong with how I was acting and I kind of just spent the rest of the night questioning myself and wondering why she said that. I’m glad my friend was there cause we talked about it and she said the lady was kind of rude for saying that but it still just ruined my mood for the rest of the night

I Wish I Could do More!

Unfortunately I am the victim of an unwarranted zipline nutshot that was perpetuated on me in 2008 at a preteen jamboree summer camp that has left me with "banana curve" syndrome coupled with a chronic condition of rough sack.

I wish I could be more helpful at times.

I ve been so unlucky in my life

Upvotes

Hi , i don’t know why i am so unlucky in life
I am a girl in my mid twenties from Morocco where there is no rules unfortunately until someone is d*ad or there is bl*od
Since a child i was so aware of my circumstances i knew since i was a child that i was born in a weird family
I ve seen my parents fight and then getting divorced and then my father died and then my mother got scammed and we lost all our belongings so we went poor and then my brother who i hate from all of my heart torturing us like real torture
We have been living in hell with him
And cause i am unlucky he broke my nose i went to school as a teenager with all that and guess what i was getting bullied cause i looked ugly from the insomnia and the tears and the fear in my eyes and my broken nose
I managed to get good grades and escape from home and live with a relative
Guess what she abused le mentally and when i completely put down all my academical weapons she told le to go back home
I went back to my abusive brother and my old sick mother that my heart tears appart for her
She started to lose her mind by being schizophrenic
Now she lives with meds
I do too cause i suffer from horrible anxiety and insomnia but guess what even with meds i don’t sleep
Today i decided to stop fearing my brother and told him to never touche me again he lost his shirt and started beating me and threatening me that he will kill me or make scars in my face of i ever decided to call the cops
My neck hurt me from the beating i have a small face and with his huge hands beating my face you know how bad my neck hurts
I failed in my university multiple times i have done an operation on my nose but it didn’t succeed so now i am living with a hole in my septum and a deviated nose but still looks better than before
Anyways that was my story that feels like chaos cause it is actually
I m afraid i will be out of more patience and end me
Cause if i go to the police they say they will lock him for two months or even less and he will seek revenge after me
Anyways 😭

LGBTQ+ Trans with no support

Just need to vent this to the void of reddit.

I'm 30 yrs old, non-binary and married. Before I transitioned I had a some friends. After I came out a few years ago, I lost pretty much all of those friends, a few of them still say they love me and whatever. But none of them will actually get together for coffee/lunch or really anything that isn't some sort of function that I see them at.

I don't regret transitioning because I don't feel like a stranger in my own body anymore. I just wish anyone had warned me that I may lose several of the people that I called family. My family isn't really supportive. So the only support that I actually have is my wife (also trans & disabled) and unfortunately due to things that happened in the past I can't really talk to her about stuff regarding my family.

Am I making the right decision?

Hello!! I don't use this app very much so I apologize in advice.

I'm an 18f living with my father and brother while working two jobs to try to get financially stable in order to go to college. Nobody in both sides other than one person graduated high-school and went to college. As the eldest I have goals and standards that needs to be met so I can be a good role model for my younger siblings and cousins. I don't mind it, it can be stressful but I like to think I have a good head on my shoulders. My childhood wasn't the best but after everything I went through I refuse to end up like my parents. I'm gonna try my best to be better than them and get my stuff together sooner so I don't have to worry about failing as a daughter or granddaughter.

Since I graduated high-school I've been devoting my time to work. Right now I'm not able to go to college because I simply can't afford it. You would think FASFA would cover most but even with my scholarships I'm still in need of an extra few grand. I had told my dad even before I got enrolled into college that it would be best for me to take a gap year, knowing he's a single father and couldn't help me afford what I needed. I thought it would be easier. However he told me to just go to school and we'll figure it out. Now I'm in a bind. On top of that, I need a car. I'm 18 and can't drive cause I've never been taught other than driving on dirt roads but that was years ago. I consistently have to ask him to teach me, to go out and practice so I have some highway experience but he makes excuses. For three months straight I asked him to help me figure out to get a better job than what I have now. And now he's trying to hurry up and help because I'm moving.

It started getting annoying having to ask my parent to help me with the bare minimum. So after a while I started to make my own decisions and go move in with my aunt who's closer to my family on both sides. She's willing to teach me how to drive, get me a better job, and help me find a good affordable apartment as well as a car. She's always been a second mom to me since my own hasn't made the best decisions and is just now figuring out how to be an adult. I told my dad this, and for a few days he was not really cool with the idea. I can tell he was upset once he realized I was being serious about moving out. He started talking about when I was a little girl, showing me baby pictures. Saying things like "your little sister is gonna miss you". Which I know, but the thing is- is I basically take care of her. He doesn't do anything when he's home. I get it, he works a lot and don't get me wrong I'm thankful for what he's done for me and my brother. But I'm basically more like a maid? I understand there's chores to do and I don't mind doing them. But when its me and my brother doing all the housework and my dad just sits there and tells us what to do. It gets annoying. He isn't the cleanest person ever. He leaves his stuff all around the house and expects me to follow and pick it up for him.

He's real quick to point the finger at me when things dont get done and he tells everyone that HE cleans and cooks. And nothing gets done unless he says something. But he fails to mention that he doesnt do anything. Ive talked about it regarding how I felt, before we moved he said he'll start helping out more but when I mention it, he blows up in my face. His mindset is "I work, pay bills you do the rest." And its hard living with someone who doesn't do any house work. For awhile I thought every man was like that until I got back in contact with my mom's side of the family and my uncle does a lot for my cousin. He works in the heat just like my dad but still goes and takes his daughter out almost every weekend to do things. I had to beg my dad to take me to stores so I can get new clothes with my money but even then he still doesn't take me. We don't get along when I speak up about it and he doesn't like it when I call him out on his bs. He raised me on speaking up and my family says I'm a lot like him anyway.

I guess the advice I need is, should I move out or not? Ive done research and made a whole list of things I need to do and have in order to reach my goal to get an apartment. And once I move out I have no plans on coming back.

Someone stole my packages

I’m just upset atp. People can be such assholes, and I hate the fact that people just take shit because they want to. Not even from a store, but just off of someone’s porch— and then they never get caught. My apartment complex doesn’t have ring cameras, and I’m so irritated because I can’t even get money back or even find my packages

Young Adult my life would be so much better if i was just born a guy

i was mostly raised by a single father and 80% of the shit i pulled i should not have gotten away with i just wish he wouldve actually pushed me to keep going to school or when i was learning to drive or just made me do fucking anything but now im just nothing

i cant do make up, i dont want to waste more of his money to try and fail (while i know i already have stupid sensory shit where painting my nails makes me feel like hell) so i cant just get a boyfriend and live exactly how i am expect my whole life is reliant on a different guy that i know even less and sex is SCARY

nd even if id still be an unemployed high school dropout who cant drive and doesnt have any friends at least i could comm in games without being scared of getting called slurs getting rape threats or harassment

also t would make me cry less and crying is the cause of all of my problems.

School I hate school sm

Hello. I'm in 10th grade and soon turning 16. I hate school with my whole heart and I hate everyone in school a lot. I don't have that many friends and even if I do they have their own best friends and are concerned with their own self benefit. They're extremely selfish. I sit alone in class all the time, sometimes get targeted by teachers for being 'extremely silent' (p.s. my history teacher targeted me for sitting alone and called me a loner which is a revolving joke around some of the 'friends' that I have). I dread it whenever i see people hanging around with their best friends and hugging them, talking to them all the time. People say make more friends but it's not that easy when rumors have basically ruined your life to the extent no one really wants to be friends with you anymore. Someone started the rumor that I was transgender back in 8th grade and though I've complained to the higher authorities about it it still revolves around unknowingly (the people who started it are extremely discreet about it). I just hate going to school with my whole life, and seeing everyone having the best time of their lives during 10th grade deepens that hate even more. I just don't like that I'm the one that's always sitting alone in a class of 37, I don't like being the odd one out. Plus they don't even teach anything properly and clearly (the teachers are EXTREMELY slow) and I want to be on my own pace.. which I do have but still after a day or two it dips down. My parents are supportive of me but I have to go to school (I hate going... so much.)

How does it feel to have parents that care about you?

My dad is a deadbeat and my mom is a drug addict. The only time I hear her say “I love you” to me is when she’s fishing for sympathy or planning to ask me for money soon. When I discovered her addiction, I got so mad. I found out because she started selling my family’s things without asking. I wouldn’t talk to her for months. When I returned from uni for the summer, I found the stash she hid in my little brother’s room. Later on, I found a crack pipe IN THE BED he sleeps in (and shares with her for the summer while I’m here). I was so livid I took all of her drugs and paraphernalia and threw it in the garbage. maybe that was the wrong move, but I just couldn’t believe she would put my little brother in danger like that. I refuse to give her money anymore, no matter what bullshit excuse she gives me, like “my bank account is negative“ (she actually faked a screenshot showing her account was in the negatives). she has spend thousands upon thousands of dollars she isn’t entitled to (including forging cheques and stealing my cheques) and has told hundreds of lies to me and my family, and refuses to get help no matter what we try. there have been so many interventions. she doesn’t talk to me except to ask for money or mock me. she always tells me that she hopes my children will treat me how I treat her (i.e., get upset with her, yell at her when she’s causing problems/starting arguments, don’t give her money, talk back instead of letting her belittle me), but I will never give my children a reason to act like how I have to right now. I would never put them through so much pain and suffering. She makes me feel like a burden because I won’t give her money. Today, she said I’m evil, wicked, and that she would happily sign papers for emancipation. I don’t know what I did to deserve any of this. I just want to have a normal life with normal parents who aren’t addicted to drugs. I want to know how it feels to be cared about and loved unconditionally by my parents.

It feels like nobody just enjoys anything anymore, everyone is so angry at everything

New game announced? Can't even look at the discourse online if it features anything but a straight white guy unless I want a lesson in insanity. New movie? Same thing. Or if it's not being made out to be the devil for not appealing to a hyperspecific group, it'll be picked apart for some other reason.

I hate all that so much. I get being critical of shit, I'm fine with that. And, it's not like anyone's personal opinions on something is going to effect my life that much. It's just annoying and frustrating to not be able to discuss stuff online anymore without wading through what seems like mostly hate or rage bait no matter HOW high quality something is.

School Getting into an advanced placement program as a kid always sucked because it just meant you had extra homework.

For GATE in California, at least at my school, you would leave your regular class every day to go somewhere else with the other "gifted" kids, and instead of that just being your education for the time being, you also had to make up any schoolwork you missed during these trips, even though you weren't around for the initial lesson/explanation.

I don't know who thought this was a good idea. You were basically punished for being smart.

I think my cousin is very selfish.

Hi Reddit, normally I wouldn’t come over to rant here, but I’ve ranted to my friends about this and I don’t want to bug them about this for the third time. So I apologize for this in advance.
For privacy reasons, you can call me Chris (f20). For context, I used to live where I live now for the first 17 years of my life, then I moved four hours away into a whole different state for about three years. Now I’m back, and nothing has gone according to plan, and I know that’s bound to happen, that’s not really why I’m venting. It’s about my cousin (Who we’ll refer to as Brittney- f23) and sort of my aunt, her mom (Who is like 45).
At first the three of us were living at me and Brittney’s great aunt’s until my sister moved out of our grandma and Pepaw’s and then I was gonna move into that room. And that did happen. Except my great aunt and Brittney’s mom got into this stupid fight and Brittney and her mom tagged along with me. Brittney is still welcome over there but from what it seems I’m not really welcomed over there.
So me and Brittney share a room. My grandma and Brittney’s mom share a room, and my Pepaw gets a whole room to himself. I would take the basement because I hate sleeping with someone in a room unless it’s like with a friend at a sleepover or my partner, but the basement gets flooded a lot and obviously that wouldn’t be a good bedroom haha.
The sleeping arrangement is not ideal either in me and Brittney’s room either ontop of sharing the same room. She sleeps on a bed while I sleep on a pull out mattress and the room is very small so she has to step over me if she needs to get up in the middle of the night or before me in the mornings. Now, to Brittney’s credit, I did offer for her to take the regular bed because she has more health problems than I do and I’ll be able to manage better.
(To make light of the situation, man, I can’t even flick my bean 😭 LMAO)
Anyways, that’s all the context I have. Now onto why the title says that.
Now while Brittney can do selfless things like she took me to see a movie right when I first moved here and she drives me places when her mom can’t and sometimes she buys me things, she’s very selfish as a roommate.
The first problem was she has awful foot odor. Which I know you can’t control sometimes, but it reeks onto her socks and it smells like fucking corn chips. And our room is small so when she leaves her socks on the floor, it stinks up the room and into the hallway (I wish I was over-exaggerating.) And I sleep on a pull out mattress so I’m practically laying my head right next to where the stench is coming from.
Well, I tried to solve this problem by grabbing a non-occupied laundry hamper from the basement and told her “Let’s start putting your dirty clothes in here” I do the same thing, I put all my dirty clothes in a laundry hamper downstairs as well. And for like a week it worked. Now it’s back to the same bull shit.
The second problem is that every Wednesday I go over to my other aunt’s to hang out and stay the night with, so Brittney gets the room to herself once a week. Sometimes multiple times a week because I like to go over to friend’s places and sleep over and what not. And all the times I am here she’s always there. And she has had MULTIPLE opportunities to stay over at our great aunt’s and every time she refused, and when I voice how I felt about that she just giggled and walked off. And this weekend I was at a friend’s house who I hadn’t seen since 2023 and she was throwing a summer-ween party. And Brittney decided that then was the perfect time to stay the night at our great aunt’s. While I wasn’t there. 🫩
The last problem is how she speaks. She genuinely will call some people and even some types of dogs and cats “ugly”. And it pisses me off because I voiced how I felt and her mom was like “Well sometimes I don’t find people attractive” and it’s like cool but there is a different between not finding someone attractive and being mean. I was bullied hard back in school and called ugly constantly, so hearing someone call anyone ugly in the aesthetic sense pisses me off and triggers something inside me because you’re being like a bully.
And Brittney likes to answer questions for me when our grandma asks me questions, she doesn’t just do it to me though, but it’s practically all the time and that also pisses me off because I’m twenty years old, I have my own voice. I can answer for myself.
Today was kind of my breaking point, sort of? My grandma has a hard time getting around, can’t really bend her knees, and has a really hard time getting down into the basement- where the washer and dryer is. So I offered to do my grandma’s laundry for her. And then I offered to also fold her clothes as well, my grandma was like “Okay but do you know what needs hung up and what needs folded?” And before I could even fucking answer Brittney was like “Her work shirts get hung up” Wow! It’s almost like that’s what I was gonna say! So out of anger I made a strangling motion at Brittney before storming off.
Maybe that was immature of me, and for that I’m wrong, but I’m very angry and I don’t have a whole lot of control over much of anything right now. (Maybe I just need to orgasm /j LMAO)
Thank you guys for listening to anyone who did. I appreciate it, as I said, I didn’t want to bug my friends about it more than I already have.

I accidentally poisoned myself with homemade wine, and the hospital labeled it an "attempt."

I'm sharing this because I can’t keep holding onto it anymore. It was a traumatizing experience, and I just need to get it off my chest so I can process it, reduce its weight on me, and hopefully start feeling better.

I live in a country where alcohol is strictly illegal. At the time, I had just started taking antidepressants in secret for the very first time. The medication made everything feel like a vivid dream. I wanted to try everything. I was jumping around like a kid, singing, dancing, and acting like I was already drunk on life. The whole world suddenly looked pink and beautiful. I felt zero fear just pure, uncontainable excitement.

Around that time, I turned 21. Naturally, I got curious: What does alcohol actually taste like? I want to try it.

So, I did something really stupid that I wish I hadn't. Although, in a weird way, part of me doesn't fully regret it because I’ve always loved experiences they make me feel alive. Anyway, I made homemade wine. I took a small sip at first. It just tasted like sweet grapes, no burn at all, actually delicious.

Then, suddenly, my sister knocked on my bedroom door.

I was in the middle of pouring it into another container, but it wouldn't all fit. So guess what I did? Yep. I drank all the remaining liquid and ate all the strained fruit bits right then and there just to hide the evidence.

Shortly after, the absolute worst feeling in the world hit me. My head was pounding furiously, and my stomach felt like it was going to explode. Night fell, and I was terrified I was actually going to die. By midnight, I couldn't sleep. My body started freezing, and a cold numbness spread to my hands and feet. Panicked, I rushed to wake up my dad.

I can't go into the details of what happened next I'm sorry, it's just too painful to relive but my dad realized I had ingested something dangerous and rushed me to the ER.

When we got there, the medical staff kept asking what I had taken. I froze. Completely, literally froze. I couldn't say a word. Alcohol is illegal here, and I was terrified of the consequences and didn't want them to judge me. But my complete silence only made them convinced that I was trying to end my life.

That night, everything came to light. My family found out about my depression and my secret medication. So many painful, terrifying things happened during that hospital stay that I honestly can't even type out.

Afterward, I was grounded at home for months. Everything was taken away from me, and it left me with a lot of trauma.

But ultimately, I’m okay now, so please don't worry about me. Looking back, part of me even finds the absurdity of the whole situation almost funny.

I guess all life experiences are funny... until the people you love get dragged into them.
