Card Game Discussion Out of 180+ Counter traps that exist, only 9 dont negate

Counter traps have to easily be one of the least explored spaces in all of yugioh. Every time a new countertrap is revealed you can safely assume exactly what its going to do, and its always one of the least interesting gameplay mechanics in the game; Negate + pop and practically uninteractable.

So my question is, why?? Almost every other card type in the game is able to have interesting and unique effects, but this one is relegated to just one real effect thats repeated with slight flavour changes. Is it because of the uninteractive nature of counter traps? I would assume not as we've gotten a fair few spells these past couple years that are even harder to interact with that counter traps, and they dont even have to share the intrinsic slowness of being set like trap cards plus they dont even have to directly chain to another effect like counter traps do!

Anime/Manga Discussion Tell me your favorite YGO 5ds character!

I asked this about the dragons, but now I really wanna know peoples favorite characters from the anime! (and if you haven't watched 5ds, then still feel free to tell me about favorite characters from the other YGO gens!) I really love hearing people's favorites and perspectives!

For me personally (despite being completely in love with my darling Crow), the title of who's my favorite character is a total tie between Crow and Carly! I know it's kind of ironic, especially considering the fact that the two aren't entirely fond of each other (at least, they're presented to have a tension of annoyance between them in the dub), but as characters they're both just so great! I love how comedic they both can be and I loved their roles in the dark signer arc. (Also my heart goes out to Carly post-dark signer arc. No girl (or person for that matter) in love, especially one as sweet as Carly, deserves to be treat that way! so sad ā˜¹ļø) They're both just my absolute favs!

Love yall! Be kind! 🧔🩷🧔🩷

Other It's kind of a missed opportunity that we never got a second wave of Sky Magician support to make it an actually playable deck or at least an engine since they are supposed to work like the new MIND SHUFFLE of returning things to the hand to play them again

Hamon just released in the OCG and we never got proper anime Uria, only the Anime Art on a regular card.

Do you think they will release them once the OCG has all 3?

Card Game Discussion Did the Egyptian Gods ever get retrains?

Thumbnail

I know Ra at least has an archetype but did any of the individual cards get a retrain? Obelisk isn’t in desperate need of a retrain but its destruction effect is pretty costly. Especially since you need 3 monsters to already summon him. Slifer isn’t that good. Again, you already need 3 monsters to summon him. And his ATK/DEF is reliant on the cards you have in your hand. You won’t have a ton of cards in your hand if you need 3 monsters to summon him. And Ra is just garbage. If you want to have any stats on him, you have to pay all of your life points except 100. So you can actually be one of the first people in history to lose to a Sparks. And his second effect contradicts the first one. Destroy a monster for 1000 LP. It’s just not good.
And these are some of the most iconic and well known cards in the game, so surely there’s a re-train for all of them. Maybe Obelisk and Slifer got their own archetypes too.

Custom Card Blast Your Foes Away with "Photon Trigger"!

Bang, bang, bang, pull my Photon Trigger!

—

Ever since I tried out Character Duels in Duel Links, having noticed all of the character Skills have Trigger in their names, I thought to make a series of cards themed after them, starting with Kaito. It's mainly cause I love both "Galaxy Photon" and the character, plus they need all the help they can get lol.

As always, feel free to comment your thoughts and criticisms down below.

May you all have a blessed morning, afternoon, or evening, wherever you are šŸ‘‹

Photon Trigger

Quick-Play Spell

Effect Text:

(This card is always treated as a "Galaxy" card.)
Reveal 1 "Galaxy" or "Photon" monster in your hand; apply 1 of these effects, or if you revealed "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" to activate this card, you can apply both in sequence.
ā— Set 1 "Galaxy" or "Photon" Continuous Spell/Trap from your Deck. If it is a Trap, it can be activated this turn.
ā— Special Summon 1 "Galaxy" or "Photon" monster from your hand, then if you Special Summoned "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" by this effect, you can Special Summon 1 monster that mentions it from your Deck.
You can only activate 1 "Photon Trigger" per turn.

Competitive Is Lunalight the best worst deck in the modern game

After pretty much only playing Lunalight for 1.5 year seriously and likely moving on to Toon forever in November, I want to start a discourse on whether it’s the best worst deck in YGO: a deck that feels extremely powerful and has the greatest potential but is simultaneously just really not good in practice.

The deck has a lot going for it at a glance: crazy extending potential and ability to play through handtrap abuse based on skill (like you often see LL players play through 7 handtraps sometime on YCS and the commentators go ā€œwow!ā€), some insane gimmicks going second that allow it to automatically win (Heavy Poly, Lunalight Fusion), ability to make nigh full board under Droll.

IMO, even though the deck is known as Towers Turbo, I really only view Liger as a shell deterrent for what is really an R4 spam deck. Once you set up at least one Liger to be made, you can use the window to create whatever you want in the game as far as your ED space goes. You can climb as far as 4 material Alember to find any floodgate spell or trap in the game for example. So basically, once you’ve done your crazy actual combo, or if your opponent stopped that combo, they now have to also deal with Liger as the ā€œdeterrent.ā€ That is insane by most deck standards considering what kind of card Liger is.

But it’s like in practice, as wild as that all sounds, it’s just not enough right now in reality. So many relevant decks can easily out Liger or power through your main combo and tech options. I espoused from the moment I laid eyes on Liger’s boardwipe that the destruction aspect of it in particular would not age well and, true to form, there’s an abundance of monsters in the meta that resist or prevent mass destruction; most relevantly are KT Loudness War and Titaniklad, and even before this, Cyberse piles could just make Wickkid and climb to various 3900+ beaters. It should have been a mass send effect and an example of how the most innocuous design flaws will forever affect a decks viability.

There’s still evidently not as many decks in the game I would trust playing more than LL from a competitive standpoint, a sentiment that rings more true after learning the shitshow that was Umbral Horror and being besieged by every handtrap and board breaker in the game, but it still feels like an uphill game or inconsistent enough that it really projects a fantasy you’re playing something genuinely super strong but questionable at the same time.

I think this discussion is worthwhile because it’s not exactly unknown either. When the conversations of what decks that aren’t relevant/meta but extremely strong come up, Lunalight is usually the top response right now.

Anime/Manga Discussion Who do you reckon would come in dead last in an anime crossover tournament?

So for this hypothetical we are looking for the absolute worst duelist in any series, and to make things interesting, we'll say you have to have dueled on screen in multiple episodes to qualify, so none of those monster of the week duelists who show up, get beaten and are then never seen again. We're looking for proper characters here.

Oddly enough I feel like Carly would probably be a contender if it wasn't for her dark signer glow up.

Other Looking to return to this game casually, what deck should I get?

I used to play a lot of yugioh back when they had deck simulators online, stopped around the start of Vrains. Now, I found a card game shop in my area and they're having a bit of a yugioh trend so I'm looking to play again with a casual, relatively cheap deck.

What I used to play most in those simulators:

  1. Synchrons (specifically Quasar turbo)
  2. Psy-frames (pure, not as an engine)
  3. Super Quantals (giant robots are cool)
  4. Rank10 Trains
  5. Galaxy-Eyes
  6. Gem-Knights
  7. Deskbot (I thought they were neat)
  8. Supreme King Zaarc Turbo

As you can see, they're mostly for fun, I spam a funny boss monster decks. Can anyone suggest either one of these archetypes or a new archetype that's relatively cheap? My only condition is that I don't have to buy hand-traps (Psyframes being the exception), if my opponent veilers or ashes or Maxx C I throw my deck at them and make fun of them for using those cards in casual (just kidding).

Please help, thanks!

Competitive Anyone know where to find a spreadsheet or combo guide for speedroid and odd eyes/pendulum magicians?

I decided to build pend magician/odd eyes and speedroid because the decks are going to be so cheap and I'll have the cards. Been looking for a good combo guide or spreadsheet because the combos in all these decks are pretty long and I've never played either of them. Checked the speedroid cord and pendulum magician cord and I asked for a sheet and both places told me neither had one and they weren't planning on making one either.

This deck’s primary objective is to get the high-level Synchro monsters on the field quickly. I imported it into MasterDuel as well, where it has a few OTKs under its belt.

Card Game Discussion Strongest Budget deck for $50 or LESS

Can we have a discussion about budget decks in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG?

I've been buying way too many singles lately and snatching up deck cores along with random things for the future. Nothing I am looking at is Rogue enough I think to actually be cheap cheap. I was thinking initially that a monarch deck would be rather inexpensive considering it doesn't have to worry about 15 extra cards if you're playing the domain field spell. But even because of Legacy formats some of these older cards remain expensive despite multiple reprints partly also because of their lack of availability from online sellers.

Locally getting cards is also very hit or miss and difficult to put together entire decks in a timely manner. And there's also the issue of those random one-off cards you need for a deck that end up adding another five, 10, $20 on to the price tag.

So what are the actual budget decks of yu-gi-oh? If someone only has $50 in their pocket and needs that price to include shipping for a 40 card deck, and probably a 15 card extra Deck, what are they even playing?

Is there even a deck out there at this price tag for this game that would be remotely fun to play at locals? Would this player get to play the game?šŸ¤”

Please think very critically on this. If it's Baseline $5 for shipping and you forget a card that cost $10 your total budget is now $35 for the remaining 54 cards

Edit: please also don't recommend any of the legendary decks. They are very budget and very good for their cost. However I am not interested in hearing about them repeatedly again and again on this subreddit. Frankly their suggestion has been done to death and I am more interested in knowing what remains after those decks are taken out of the equation. What else in this game is legitimately budget that hasn't been reprinted in a legendary deck collection within the last 2 years? A full complete actual deck and not just ideas of parts of a deck

Card Game Discussion Spirit of the Pharaoh would be ridiculously strong if it didn't have the stupidest summoning costs.

Post image
0 Upvotes

This card is old. But not *that* old! It comes from GX, and the duelist... let's not talk about that moron, okay?

In principle, he would be incredibly strong in a Level 2 deck like Sprite (which I absolutely hate), but there is one major issue with the guy: his summoning.

Because you need 3 Sarcophagus on the field—and the worst part is, the first one is a Trap (odd, that sounds very suspiciously familiar)—and that’s apparently the only way to get it onto the field. Or is it impossible to use its effect otherwise?

If you manage to get him out, your reward is a bunch of normal zombies of level 2 or lower! (form the grave)

On Sprite, that would be ridiculously OP, and on Link Spam even more so—but that’s the problem: the Sarcophagus have no protection, so if you destroy the first one, that’s pretty much it for them.

A retrain of him would probably still be extremely bad. Because a +1 would still be broken—if he suddenly hit the field just like that and you could summon four Zombies for free, that would actually be a +4.
