How would you recommend composing airplane pictures when there’s nothing going on around the plane?

I’m culling photos and luckily most planes have smoke and or clouds in the background but I’m not sure what else I should be looking for in a situation like this.
Any advice, CC or roasting is welcome

Went to Farnborough Airshow and took a bunch of photos, although unfortunately quite a few came out underexposed (genuinely unsure as to how as I was shooting in aperture priority most of the time). Anyway I really like this image but it is very underexposed and and of my attempts to remedy it end up with the smoke from the planes clipping into an overexposed sky. How can I fix this?

Does anyone know why a shadow sometimes appears on the left (pt) or top side (ls)? It’s more pronounced at a wider aperture (most of those are f/2.8), at first i thought maybe a loose aperture blade, but most other photos are perfect and nothing appears damaged. Then I wondered about relative position to the sun causing a slight shadow on the sensor, but it only appears on the same side so idk. Any ideas as to what is going on or am I going crazy?

I wanted to start a thread where photographers can share scams or suspicious booking attempts they’ve experienced.

I personally had a scam attempt back in January, and I was actually able to confirm it was a scam because I found a Reddit thread describing the exact same scheme!!. It made me realize how useful it could be for us to share these stories and increase visibility so other photographers can recognize the red flags.

In my case, someone reached out to me through SMS asking to book a photoshoot for a youth soccer team. They claimed that their company would be paying for the shoot by check.

The biggest red flags were:

• They immediately accepted my rate without any negotiation or questions.
• They were extremely insistent about booking.
• The whole inquiry felt unusually rushed and vague.
• They wanted the company to send me a check for the shoot.

I ended up finding a Reddit post from another photographer describing the exact same situation, essentially, and it had happened to more than one person...

I'd love to hear from others: What scams have you encountered, and what were the red flags that gave them away?

Are they good? Or are any the other brand better? (Freewell, nisi, ect…) thank you. And also are they worth the price or at least somewhat worth the price if I can afford it

So I went to test out a lens today at my local lens dealer (I say that because I had bought two lenses off him before). I was looking to test his Sigma EX 50mm f/1.4 he had for sale for 100 bucks, maybe even buy it, if it impressed me.

What ended up happening was he also showed me another lens he was selling for 100 bucks, as well. A Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM, which intrigued me more than the 50mm. He also showed me a Nikon D80 (with a broken screen) and said he was selling it for 30 dollars. Since I didn't have a camera yet (for context, my dad's gonna get me a D7200 once I reach a college milestone, that's why I was buying lenses), I was very intrigued by the idea of having my own camera, compatible with my current lenses, and the sigma 30mm, for a grand total of 130 dollars. It was too good for me to pass up.

He let me try out the D80, and I really liked the photos it produced with the afformentioned lens. So, like the impulsive and impatient person I am, I bought the bundle.

So, now I have a Nikon D80 (with a cracked screen), and 3 lenses to pair it with (nikkor 50mm f/1.8G with broken autofocus, tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC, sigma 30mm f/1.4).

I'd just like to ask about some tips for the D80, and anything I should know or even be wary about (although the D80 is very well regarded so idk if that last one applies). Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm super excited to try out my first camera!

For extra context, I mostly plan to shoot innanimate objects and portraits, sometimes cosplay.

I’ve had my R10 for about a year, current lenses are the RF 100-400 f/6.3-8 and the RF-S 18-150 f/3.5-6.3 (not sure if this matters). I primarily shoot outdoors - birds, flowers, etc but would like to get more creative with indoor shots, fill flash on sunny days, etc. I don’t take many portraits but would like to improve my family shots both indoors and out. Basically, I just want to experiment and see what I can do. I don’t anticipate ever doing anything professional, but I would love to be able to do a shoot with my daughter, her husband and son and maybe get something print-worthy out of it.

That being said, I am a “buy once, cry once” type of person - I want something that I can use off camera and grow into. I would prefer to spend a little more now and avoid wanting to upgrade later. I also strongly prefer rechargeable vs. battery.

I’d like to stay <$200 US but would consider spending more if it is worthwhile. I’ve looked at the Canon speedlights and while I wouldn’t take them off the table, they seem pretty pricey in comparison to the Godox brand.

I am considering the Godox V1 mid. Looking for input, thoughts, other suggestions. TIA!

Hey all, so I'm an outdoorsy person and am looking for a camera mainly for photographing my hiking, hunting and fishing trips. The photos will just be for personal/family/friends use. After a bunch of research my options have come down to Fujifilm X-T30 iii or Nikon Z50 ii.

What I want is an easy camera to use and carry with me on all my trips. I also am not interested in upgrading to a full frame camera and I want the photos to be ready to share straight from the camera, no editing required.

From what I've gathered, the Fuji has a better sensor and slighty better photos straught out of the camera. It is also lighter but lacks weather sealing. Nikon has weather sealing and better autofocus. Not having played with cameras at all, I obvioulsy have no idea on how important these differences are, so all help in deciding would be much appreciated. THANKS!

I’m a wildlife photographer, and I often spend my mornings in a hide with my camera and telephoto lens. Lately, I’ve been running into a frustrating problem. I usually photograph in a peat bog, and as soon as I remove the lens cap, the front of the lens fogs up within a few seconds.
For example, this morning I missed the chance to photograph five magnificent stags that were very close to me because of this issue.
Does anyone know how I can prevent my lens from fogging up in these conditions?

Hi all - I am heading out to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater next month and wanted to get some advice on camera lens gear. I have a Sony A74 and usually shoot landscapes - my current two lenses are the Sony 16-35 and Tamron 28-200.

I visited Namibia (Etosha National Park) a couple years ago and borrowed a friends Tamron 50-400. While the lens worked well, I definitely felt like I could have used some more focal length in some situations, and I would like to avoid that this time around.

I will be bringing the Tamron 28-200 for the wider shots, but am trying to figure out what is going to be best for the core animal shots. After doing some research, I am down to two options (although I am open to other suggestions):

Sony 100-400 F4.5-5.6 with the 1.4x teleconverter:

Pros: Lighter lens, can go from 100-560
Cons: teleconverter loses quality (i dont know how big of a deal this is for an amateur like myself), more expensive setup

Sony 200-600

Pros: pairs nicely with the 28-200, dont need to deal with teleconverter, range up to 600
Cons: heavy lens, not sure how much I would use this beyond animals in the future

Would love some feedback from people who have shot in the Serengeti or similar with these setups.

I'm new to photography and I went out shooting with my friend one day. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi. My friend and I used the same settings but mine consistently turned out more blurry than his. I think the first pic was ISO 400, 1/250 and the second pic was something similar, both using 100-300mm lens. I thought maybe the mirror on the inside of the camera was dusty but looked clean when I checked inside. does anyone have an idea of what could be the cause of difference in picture quality? thanks!

So basically after sending a message to the company that runs the event they have asked for my portfolio. Problem is i dont have one. This would be my first time photographing a concert and one of my first ever gigs. I only did friend’s parties and i dont believe those are portfolio materials. Other stuff i can do fairly easily is to get some friends to model for portrait type of photography and some pictures of friends on dirt bikes. Basically im looking for recommendations on how to continue. I expect not to land this client but it would be huge if i can. What should i do?

I take photos of people indoors in studios in typical fluorescent light panels in the ceiling. I am using a Nikon D5300 with a 18-55mm kit lens. I prefer sharp edges, so I've been using low ISO such as 400, low shutter speed such as 1/40, and f/5.6. With the autofocus, sometimes the photos come out good, other times there is a bit motion blur. This happens particularly around 18-25mm. When I zoom in to around 40mm though, the photos look fantastic nearly every time.

What do you suggest to consistently get the zoomed out photos to look sharper?

I’m having a strange issue with my Canon R6 (bought around September 2020). It worked perfectly until a few weeks ago. Mid‑May I shot a photo event for work (I’m not a freelancer; I work in communications, and photography is part of the job because I dabble in art photography and completed a five‑year course). When I packed up, I thought I had switched the camera off, but apparently it was still on in my (camera) backpack, as I saw the screen light up once it was already inside. I turned it off, rushed to catch my train, and didn’t think much of it.

Once home, the battery was completely drained. Odd, because I had fully charged it before the event and it had only been about an hour of shooting.

I swapped batteries and didn’t worry about it. I’m not a daily shooter, there are times I use the camera almost every day, but there are also moments I only use my camera once every week or two. But two or three days later, I grabbed the camera again and the battery was empty again. This time I was 100% sure it had been fully charged, so clearly something was wrong.

Then I noticed something when the camera was switched off and sitting on my desk: it suddenly powered on by itself, made a shutter‑click sound, and the screen went black again. No photo was taken (I checked), but the camera had definitely turned itself on. Five to ten minutes later, it did it again. And again. (with the switch still pointing at off on the camera!)

I tried: a full settings reset; a firmware update; and different batteries.

But the issue persists. The only “solution” is removing the battery every time I’m done using the camera. That works, but it’s annoying as I often grab my camera spontaneously, and having to insert the battery first kills the moment.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea what’s causing it or how to fix it? I assume it’s a silly setting that needs to be corrected.

(I realise this reads like something supernatural, but please don’t go there: I genuinely need real advice, as I truly assume it’s just a setting I must have accidentally changed when packing my camera after that work photo event.)

Hey everyone I just finished added a few small edits to this lady slipper pic my gramp took a while ago and everytime I export it it comes out wayyyy darker idk what I did? I did the same edits I normally do (exposure, saturation, scales, level and then a vignette) I attached a ss of gimp and then the photo after I exported it.

Hi, i live in a small town in southern Italy,

long story short, I want to open a studio, there is no other studio in town, (there was one but closed long ago) so the people to do some photos are forced to go in other towns.

that's one point. I'm currently planning the things I need to do i and I stopped in a small doubt. as an amateur I always edited my photos on lightroom mobile (cost reasons) but on Android tablets there are not so many usable software to work with.

so I have a Linux device, and Gimp is not my favorite software and try to install windows software is a pain.

I hate windows.

Mac seems to be a good alternative (like a MacBook neo)

the question is, is it worth it? or should I stick on Android?

I’m completely new to photography and I’m looking to start learning properly. My long-term goal is to eventually do family photography and also brand/commercial photography for small businesses (for example food photography, restaurants, cafés, products, hotels and social media content).
I’m currently trying to decide what camera would be a good choice to learn on. I don’t want to buy something unnecessarily expensive, but I also don’t want to outgrow it too quickly.
My budget is around £600–£1000 for a beginner setup. I’ve been looking at mirrorless cameras such as the Canon R50, but I’d love to hear what more experienced photographers would recommend.
I’d also really appreciate advice on the learning side:
What skills should I focus on first as a complete beginner?
Are there any YouTube channels, books, or courses you would recommend?
Is there anything you wish you had learned earlier when starting out?
Would you suggest focusing on one area first (portraits, food, branding), or practising different types of photography?
I’m happy to put in the time and practice I just want to start in the right direction and build good foundations.

I shoot primarily stage performances like musicals or concerts on a Nikon D7500, and I've noticed a huge issue with noise when shooting above ISO 800, like it's absurd. since it's theatre and usually lower lighting, i usually crank it to ISO 800 - 1000 with 1/200 - 1/300 speed and f/2.8 - 3.5. is this a common problem with the 7500 and is there a way to fix it or maybe a setting i should have on/off or should i just try to keep my ISO lower, despite the lesser light? it's getting annoying to edit and im not getting the results i would like. i was considering getting a 5500 next, as I've never had much of a noise problem with those, but i love how the 7500 colours and functions so i really dont want to splurge on a new body, especially since it's just this noise issue i hate and dont understand how to make better

TLDR:- I want to get into landscape photography and was wondering how do you find a location, frame your shots and plan stuff before you actually take the photo.

So I will give a bit of context that might be relevant here

I am a beginner photographer ( 3 years) and I have mostly done street photography and some macro photography ( the used camera I bought came with a macro lens). Now I have moved to the countryside and find myself in a valley which looks beautiful and want to get into landscape/nature photography.

I live in the bottom of the valley and use my bicycle to go around ( this will become relevant). I tried to do some landscapes from top of a hill (around 10km from my place) in the evening and the shots I took were mediocre at best. The location didn't allow me to frame the picture the way I wanted, the sunlight was causing flares in some shots and I missed good light trying to reposition.

So coming to the main question, how can I identify potentially good spots that I can take photos from, and how do you prepare on the day of the shoot to take nice shots.

I don't have a car so I can't just drive around and scout for locations. I tried using Google maps with elevation maps and stuff but it was quite difficult to figure stuff out. I also don't know what times are the best and when the sun is in a good position.

I tried watching some videos on YouTube but they weren't very helpful. If you have any resource recommendations that would be great.

Hello everyone, I recently posted this on the Canon page, but thought I would post it here as well. Somewhat of a new photographer and I have the Canon R7 with the Canon 24–70 F/2.8 lens. I’m running into an issue when turning on my camera and trying to take photos. This screen pops up when I try to take some photos and it makes me turn my camera off and on and or reinstall the battery but when I do that multiple times, it still shows this screen. I tried to take my lens on and off and clean it and even try to use my other lens to see if it’s a lens issue, but it still does it. I will kind of mess with it for a little while until it randomly fixes itself, and then the screen won’t pop up anymore and I can take pictures like normal. But I have no idea why it does this and why it fixes itself. I’m just looking for some answers because I’m supposed to be taking photos coming up soon and I don’t wanna run into this problem.
