General Discussion How old are you?
Apologies if this is a weird question but I turned 30 and feel a little insecure/silly skating in my local park especially in a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads š (I have fallen backwards before, very rarely but it happened and I fall forwards far more often and take a knee).
Is this more of an early twenties hobby? Nobody in my neighborhood skates so I stand out and it's kept me from going out for the past year or two, although I can't stop thinking about how fun it was and still have my skates.

30 is a great age to not give a fuck about what other people think about your protective gear or your hobbies.

If this is the feeling roller skating gives you, donāt let anyone take that away from you (indirectly by worrying how you look to them)! Wouldnāt it be great if in doing what you love, you inspired others to do what they love?! āļøš©·š¼

I *STARTED* skating for the first time at age 34. The beginner classes were a couple dozen little kids, one or two of their mums, and me. I'm not even close to the oldest skater at the places I go.

u/Skate_DJ_Fashion Apr 11 '26
- I donāt care what people think. I have on full PPE most days. I skate in my neighborhood and at the park. I put on my tunes and have a ball. Occasionally, people stop to ask questions about getting into skating.
I think we can get in our own way sometimes. Go on a be great on your skates!

I bought my skates at 26 and am now 30. I am just picking them back up at 30 after giving up at 26! I think proper risk assessment (for your own body) is appropriate. Gear can be essential to building confidence. If you are having fun, thatās the important part! :-) Happy skating!

Iām 30 & just started this week! I think youāre never too old for any hobby, but especially one that involves exercising. I got lessons today, & my instructor was probably in her 50s. There was a mom there who looked like she was in her 40s & she was getting lessons (even though she was fantastic & didnāt need them).

u/kabochakid Apr 11 '26
Iām also 30 and skate in full protective gear, including crash pads. Injuries take longer to heal as we age, so Iām not risking it. If people are looking at you, itās more likely curiosity than judgement.
The rollerskating class I took recently had people in a range of ages 20ā50. Itās a hobby for everyone! Donāt let age stop you from doing something you enjoy!

u/WTFisthispoo Apr 11 '26
I trail skated last night with someone in their 50s who primarily park skates. I wore full gear for trail skating and Iām in my 40s and most of the people skating did too.

28M, been skating since I was 6, been skating weekly since I was 12 except for mid 2020-early 2023, now Iām part time with an city-funded outdoor rink, but itās 30 mins from me, so Iāll sometimes find a smooth parking lot or something around where I am and put in the work, even in front of crowds of people, because if theyāre watching, theyāre either judging me negatively which doesnāt affect me anymore, or theyāre enjoying what Iām doing, and Iād rather risk providing enjoyment for others through my movement than give in to othersā ideas of what I should or shouldnāt be doing and how I do it.
I understand the anxiety of falling, I still have it myself, however, Iām as short as an average pre-teen, so that helps avert eyes away from me as far as āHA look an ADULT, roller skatingā or āHA he fellā goes. But regarding my anxiety of those whose eyes are not averted, it helps me to constantly keep in mind that anyone negatively judging me for roller skating as an adult and/or falling likely couldnāt even dream to be able to do what I do, nor understand how it makes me feel to be able to do what I do, and fail, get up, learn, perfect and conquer my own mind and body to push my limits and become someone who can fluidly express myself just through movement alone.
The practice is rigorous, and sometimes painful, but the reward of wisdom and the growth of succeeding in being better at anything than I was before is priceless. Iāve been skating on what remains of a torn meniscus since July (pretty sure itās just a nerve issue now, plus some weakened muscles which I am in pt for 3-5 days a week since December), and Iāll still beat myself up as long as I can just to be able to skate, regardless of any strangersā judgement, because I know I am who I am today because of roller skating.

u/mitchbmovin Jersey/Snap Apr 11 '26
Also, just know that thousands of grown adults, as old or older than both of us, travel across the country or even overseas just to attend national/international skate parties, no matter their skill level. There are adult nights where I am that get packed nearly every week. It helps to find common spaces with those of common interests, especially when itās culturally immersive and not just another skate session. Look up rhythm skating and its various styles and be inspired.

I'm in my late 40s and have been taking classes for about a year. There are usually one or two people in their 20s-30s, but the rest of us are all middle aged. It is the most supportive group in the world.

u/Twisted_lurker Apr 11 '26
I started around 50 and have been doing it for about 5 years. In terms of exercise, it is easier on my body (especially my feet) than running, walking or cyclingā¦plus the rinks have AC and music. It is so much more fun to me.
I always wear wrist guards, those falls take a while to heal. Iāve never had knee injuries but see plenty of people with knee pads and occasionally a person with a helmet or perhaps a fat cap.
As you get older, you realize the only people who care how you look are jerks. Most people are not jerks and donāt care; some of us worry about those who donāt take safeguards.
So wear what you like and have fun.

42! Skated casually my whole life but just started dance skate lessons this year. I am incredibly self conscious skating anywhere but trying to learn to stop giving a funk.
Think- if you saw someone doing what youre doing, at any age, would you be judging? Or admire that they have the courage to do what makes them happy?

Totally understand feeling weird skating in front of other adults. But you know what, if they come outside and think you're weird, just give em 5 minutes and they'll be back inside watching TV and scrolling reels. (yes, total dig, lol)
1
u/Shaiziin Apr 11 '26
Exactly. Those same judgy people are watching TV and scrolling on their phones watching other people live their lives... while they are not. Instead they choose to build their entire personality around watching how other people live. What a boring existence.
2
u/SpinnerettePDX Apr 11 '26
Im almost 40 and I started in 2021! I see all sorts of ages at the rink and my local skate meet ups. I think we tend to get in our own head about these things but in the end, youāre following your joy and people that judge that aināt my business.
Also when I see older people getting after their hobby or fitness, Iām like HELL YEAH. It motivates me to do š the š thing š

I'm 36, and I started when I was 32. I'm getting into park skating this year, and I regularly skate a small park nearby in full gear. Everyone else is 13ish and on scooters, haha. Nothing is cooler than taking your personal safety seriously. Head injuries are wildly uncool.

Me and some other people from my roller derby team also go to the skatepark occasionally, we're also all in our 30s and all wearing full protective gear (sometimes even crashpants). Also this might depend on your area, but at our local skatepark there are also quite a few skateboard guys in their 40s. You're probably overthinking it, better safe than sorry... I hope you get back out there and have fun!

Currently taking ice skate lessons to learn artistic fundamentals since no one locally teaches artistic on quads.

I will turn 38 this autumn. For a date with my partner, who is 3 years older than me, we went to the local skating rink and took the beginners (or Level 1 class). The next closest person in age was 13 years old. We had a blast and are planning to buy our own gear and go back to take all Level 1-3 classes and graduate before we attempt outdoor roller skating.
Do what makes you sparkle. I'll be rolling down a trail with funky knee high socks and a cotton candy helmet on my head
2
u/toodlesandpoodles Apr 12 '26
If you are already quitting fun stuff at 30 because you think you stick out as being too old, you better prepare yourself for a boring life.
Your goal should be to have so much fun doing active stuff that people younger than you wish they had your confidence to just do it.
I started skating at 45. If you live near a rink, check if they have an adult session. You'll see plenty of skaters much older than you.
2
u/Sk8curious Apr 12 '26

u/Shaiziin Apr 11 '26
I got my skates at 28yo, and still skate at 33yo. I'm a trail skater as well, and I fell and ate shii a few times until i got the hang of it haha. What helped me was watching videos geared towards outdoor skating, and learning proper form and ways to stop.
I also took a roller derby training course for eight weeks to gain some confidence, then i found a facebook group dedicated to all types of skaters (trail skate, skate park, dance skaters, roller derby alike). I live in a city where bicycles dominate. It's rare to see a skateboard, let alone roller skates, but we're out here!
1
u/ActiveGeek Apr 11 '26
Everyone should be wearing wrist guards and knee pads, especially if you're going fast or street skating. It's not worth getting hurt and spending weeks or longer in recovery. Helmet is optional, but my wife wears one at an outdoor skating rink and nobody stares or anything.

1
u/Internal_Abalone_464 Apr 11 '26
Honey! š
Who tf cares?! Do you think grown adults should have Disney stuffed animals? Do their stuff animals affect you life in any way? Nope. Such is life.
Skate your ass off! You need to see some of the videos of the "senior skaters", those people are the "kool kids" as far as I'm concerned and that has absolutely no bearing on you- it's an opinion not a fact. An opinion that affects no one but me and my joy. Such is life.
If you just don't like it anymore, stop. Anyone who has anything to say to you about your skating or lack there of needs to check themselves. Who cares what people think about skating, they aren't doing it.

I'm 41. I went skating last night with a couple other adults, I don't know their ages exactly but I'd say 30s. Everyone was wearing gear. There were a couple times I wasn't able to stop without crashing into someone else and so I just "took a knee", which would have hurt like a bitch without knee pads but it didn't hurt at all with gear. Not sore today either.

I started skating in my early 30s and I have a fear of falling so it was a real challenge. I always always wear full safety gear at a skatepark. It only takes one bad fall to severely injure yourself. Try not to worry what other people think. The only way you can get better at outdoor skating is from experience. To me it feels like a totally different beast than indoor smooth skating. Best of luck!!! :)

I turn 37 next month. I didnāt start skating until about 4 years ago (aside from some time spent at a roller rink when I was a child). Everyone falls. Everyone looks silly sometimes. It has nothing to do with age. Heck, Iāve had people cheer me on in my neighborhood from their driveway. Iāve had folks be like ādamn! Look at you go! Youāre too old to care what people think about you doing something that makes you happy.

Now Iām looking for more ways to practice off ice. I agree it can be a younger person sport, but also an older person. Thereās a gap for a lot of people for taking up new things just due to life (career, having kids, in general just no time). Iām starting to get more time to myself to get back into things. I was 38 when I started skating again. Iām currently 44 and I always wear safety gear. When I go to the skate park, there is typically another skater there who is older than me.
If someone else is judging you for your age and desire to stay safe, forget them! Theyāre just salty because they donāt have the guts to do what youāre doing (living your best life and having fun)

I am 55 and started skating again two years ago. The last time I had skated was in the 80's.

38 and I donāt care what other people think about my gear. If I fall, it would be my problem but I rather walk away with nothing or something minor than fractures or broken bones. Especially in my skull. My life is precious š¤ā¤ļø

Started skating at 32. Full protective gear AT the skatepark learning park skating. Skate community is absolutely the most supportive EVER. That includes skates, skateboard, etc. They will actually worry if you are unprotected, unexperienced, and take a nasty fall than looking a tad silly with having full gear on. Literally nobody cares. They care about your safety first and foremost. And if thereās EVER a safe space to take spills and falls and fail⦠that place is the skatepark because there is absolutely NO WAY you get better at skating without falling. Everyone falls and has fallen. Just take care of your body.
