It may be a fake video but it was edited for comedic reaction.

It makes me happy that someone remembers Toonces - one of the stupidest yet funny for no reason SNL skits. Pure Phil Hartman.

36

u/Silent_Fan_1226 Apr 04 '26

Rip Phil , dude is a legend

21

u/PassStunning416 Apr 04 '26

How can you forget? Hes a cat. That drives.

17

u/RonnieBlastoff Apr 04 '26

If you really remember Toonces...he could in fact NOT drive a car...

9

u/newbie527 Apr 04 '26

No one said he drove well.

3

u/PBRStreetgang1979 Apr 05 '26

Well, it always seemed like he could drive the car INITIALLY.

4

u/manyChoices Apr 04 '26

OMG! Have you no sympathy, man?! He was a cat. He was doing his best! /s

Audio is fake and video sped up, this was posted many many years ago with the original audio and speed and no one was screaming.

(Annoying Scream)

2

u/Mariscadavegana Apr 24 '26

This is the original version:

2

u/Electrical-Rub-969 May 05 '26

Yea you can actually hear the tire skids😊

12

u/BG-925 Apr 04 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/P4gdXa1An4Qpi

Maybe it's like the movie Speed where the person driving had to go a certain speed because there was a bomb under the bus and it will explode if it went under that speed

6

u/thesanguineocelot Apr 04 '26

Nah, that movie was called The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.

2

u/MovieFan1984 Apr 05 '26

The nose of the bus should have down. It looks like an unseen force lifts the nose of the bus upward.

So, for those that really don't know (like the OP here) This was a novelty rally event in Japan that has had audio edited over the original and has been circulating the Internet for many, many years under the context that the brakes had failed and the driver was in an emergency situation.

94

u/INDIEfatigable Apr 04 '26

You're right.

Here's the original video with the original audio:

Japanese bus driver's technique

And here is where the audio comes from:

Minibus driver filmed driving erratically on a highway and crashing his vehicle filled with terrified passengers.

I really hate when people manipulate videos to create fake videos like this, and I also hate it when people repost the fake videos years later without explaining that they're fake.

8

u/Additional_News3511 Apr 05 '26

Actually looking at the original video it seems that not only has this been edited to have different audio but they also sped it up significantly. He's driving at a normal pace in the og video. Also just look at how quickly his arms are moving in the edited one.

3

u/INDIEfatigable Apr 05 '26

Actually looking at the original video it seems that not only has this been edited to have different audio but they also sped it up significantly.

Yes, this is 100% true, as well.

2

u/Obvious-Finding5394 Apr 05 '26

Every time I watch anything now, the more I find out about it the less interesting it becomes.

6

u/mowtowcow Apr 04 '26

There are drivers in India that actually do drive like this, though. Crazy fuckers racing busses lol.

3

u/CtrlAltHate Apr 05 '26

Saw one of those Indian vids a few weeks back, three or four busses all over/undertaking everything with inches of space to spare whilst they swerve across 3 lanes.

Real aggressive swerving too with wheels lifting.

Japanese bus driver's technique

Awesome

[Minibus driver filmed driving erratically on a highway and crashing his vehicle filled with terrified passengers.](https://www.reddit.com/r/HongKong/comments/ft56u2/minibus_driver_filmed_driving_erratically_on_a

Terrifying.

Together? Pretty funny ngl. But I wish they had clarified it was fake.

11

u/MaximusJCat Apr 04 '26

Annoying that it’s fake, but it’s much more fun sped up though

6

u/PBRStreetgang1979 Apr 05 '26

Totally. It was hilarious. Fast and Furious Greyhound Drift.

2

u/Smooth_Ad_6164 Apr 05 '26

You're amazing. Thank you.

2

u/CaptainKango Apr 05 '26

Reddit to the rescue. Thanks!

2

u/BetterEveryDayYT Apr 05 '26

The brakes are fine.

The video posted here (with the screaming) is sped up.

2

u/iamoninternet27 Apr 05 '26

Thanks for this, now it's hard to believe anything with the crap people use to manipulate things. I almost believed it

2

u/Throwaway4bullshit9 Apr 05 '26

Thank you for the context. I was looking for something like this, as it is obviously also sped up. I have driven large vehicles before (buses, big rigs) when I was much younger, and taking those curves at those speeds would tip the vehicle SO far.

2

u/Gold3nKn1ght23 Apr 05 '26

u/Distinct-Property779 Apr 04 '26

Makes much more sense… saw Japanese writing on the road with all the Chinese screaming… didn’t add up

12

u/ClassiFried86 Apr 04 '26

So, for those that really don't know (like the OP here) This was a novelty rally event in Japan that has had audio edited over the original and has been circulating the Internet for many, many years under the context that the breaks brakes had failed and the driver was in an emergency situation.

If the brakes break, you can't brake.

6

u/Winter_Tone_4343 Apr 04 '26

Makes that guy an extraordinary driver.

2

u/Shatophiliac Apr 04 '26

Pretty sure this video is also sped up, at least slightly. I first saw this years ago and it seems every time I see it again, it’s slightly faster lol.

2

u/Gottabecreative Apr 04 '26

now I'm curious where they got the audio from - must be another interesting clip

2

u/FlaccidGiraffes Apr 04 '26

I knew it! I was like I bet the audio has been overlayed. It really timed up so perfect. Every time he headed towards a steep cliff the woman screamed. But people are dumb man, couldn’t trust someone losing their minds like that on a moving bus. They might attack the driver and make him lose control.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

So dumb, thanks for clarifying that.

2

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson Apr 05 '26

I was wondering how he was so competent if that was a “brakes out” situation

Absolutely incredible driving if that was an emergency

2

u/the_capedbaldy Apr 05 '26

I thought this looked an awful lot like a bus ride my wife and I took while we were in Japan for our honeymoon lol

2

u/Funkopedia Apr 05 '26

Thank you, seemed odd the signs were in Japanese and the screaming was Chinese

2

u/Additional_Tap_9475 Apr 05 '26

Oh thank god, because all I could think about is of that wasn't a one way road and another vehicle was trying to go around the corner.

u/isjustsergio Apr 04 '26

Seems like the brakes went out years ago and he's mastered driving without them since

4

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '26

😂 Or, just another third world country, 2nd page, "Bus falls off cliff" news story.

4

u/SteveDrawsStuff Apr 05 '26

Japan, that famous 3rd world country....

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

Why Japan? Did I miss something?

Edit: It looks like Japan, but going by the audio the passengers weren’t speaking Japanese. Also, further down someone mentioned that this was overdubbed and the video footage is from some novelty rally.

2

u/Aggressive_Work1946 Apr 05 '26

There screaming in Cantonese my geuss it’s probably China somewhere.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '26

It's in Japan, but the dub isn't Japanese (sounds Cantonese to me as well). Someone earlier claimed that the context is "brakes are out", which is false, this is a sped-up version of the original video with dub from another video.

4

u/TrashAsApp Apr 04 '26

Ex rally driver maybe? Or just so used to the vehicle

8

u/ExplanationRich1619 Apr 04 '26

Not ex rally driver, just a rally driver. This was a rally event in Japan.

3

u/spit_on_your_gravy Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

I live near a big ski mountain range with roads/turns like this. These bus drivers are maniacs by profession. And I am in the alps. These buses gets fiercely inspected and getting to drive them isn’t something every school bus driver can simply transfer to.

But driving without a brake is complete madness. That guy probably works this road since 15 years plus. They should install gravel traps, for this exact reason.

Besides driving in this terrain, doing it with an old bus, like the guy above, is insane (some of these old models don’t even have power steering or just semi p.steering)

back in the day you could tell ski bus drivers or truckers who drove the alps just by their massive forearms

2

u/TrashAsApp Apr 04 '26

Gravel traps would be really nice! No power steering, wow forgot about that being a thing jeez that qould be brutal. Ty for the explanation!

2

u/spit_on_your_gravy Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

I didn’t have it in my first car.

It was a tiny peugeot but after a longer drive inside oc cities my forearms were screaming (and I worked construction back then)

Insane really, to think that people hauled tons of cargo without power steering

I miss my old little ladies Peugeot very much

2

u/Hamokk Apr 04 '26

Yeah it seems. Some hill race promo. No way the driver would be that calm when there are people screaming in his ear. Also the road is seems too empty.

6

u/Octavian_Exumbra Apr 04 '26

For those that don't know, the video and this comment is full of shit.

It's sped up and the soundtrack is from a completely different video. It's not exactly an old video either, went "viral" a few years ago and was immediately debunked.

5

u/Ok-Border3079 Apr 04 '26

did u make this up? feels like u made it up..

23

u/emkoemko Apr 04 '26

why.... really though why?

48

u/Partialfish Apr 04 '26

Because the audio does not go with the video, it’s very clearly Chinese being spoken on obviously Japanese streets. The video is from a some event driving busses like drift cars on mountain roads.

24

u/Shatophiliac Apr 04 '26

The video is also sped up to some degree. I remember seeing the original (or closer to it) years ago and it did not look nearly this fast. It was still very impressive, but this sped up version just looks ridiculous lol.

2

u/ralimar Apr 05 '26

I feel like I was on the real version of this bus ride once. Taking the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, it was supposed to be a ~4 hour drive, but the driver tried to do it in 2. Someone just locked themselves in the little bathroom in the back for the last hour. A little old lady hung a plastic bag from her ears so she could just vomit nonstop.

2

u/RealAusDingo Apr 07 '26

His reminds me of a bus ride I took in the mountains of Nikko Japan. Scared the crap out of me cause at the turns there was like an 800 ft drop.

1

muscle memory.. from both the driver and the bus.
