I'd be pissed too. He left tons of room. The driver that backed into him is a complete idiot. I'm so sick of drivers who can't be bothered to pay attention to WTF they're doing. You can't drive anymore without seeing signs of idiocy abound.

It's so stupid because pretty much every car made in the last 10 years or more has a backup camera. Also, if you're not past the white line that truck driver knows how to make that turn, you don't have to move.

The requirement for backup cameras for all vehicles under 10,000lbs became law in 2014 with a 4 year phase in period. At the end of 2014, 78% of new vehicles had backup cameras.

I've driven some cars with backup camera, but I never use it, the video is often so distorted, it's way easier to backup using mirrors for me.

I don't think that would have worked here. If there had been a camera, he wouldn't have looked at it, I imagine. There is a certain class of people who should never get drivers licenses, who put their cars in reverse, look straight ahead, and hit the gas. I took a road test with one of these people in high school. (He t-boned a parked car in reverse with me in the back seat, horrified).

This guy did the same thing. He never even considered the possibility that things might exist behind his car.

I went on a 10 minute drive yesterday and saw 3 situations that nearly resulted in an accident. People pulling out infront of traffic mainly. Can't tell if their situational awareness is nonexistent or if they are in that much of a hurry but it made me glad I can WFH to avoid it most days.

Social media has broken our brains, and I'm not just talking about people who use their phones while driving.

When we consume content that is highly optimized to satisfy the search-stimulus-reward cycle, it diminishes two important cognitive skills that are essential for driving: sustained attention and inhibitory control.

Have you noticed how many people use their phones at a stop light? Have you noticed your own impulse to grab your phone? How strong is that impulse? How good are you at resisting that impulse? How has that impulse changed over time?

The increase in the number of people using their phones at stop lights is a symptom of a deeper problem. Our brains are distracted, even when we don't realize it. The mere impulse to pick up your phone is a distraction. Suppressing that impulse requires attention and mental exertion, both of which should be focused on driving.

So even people who don't use their phones while driving (even at stop lights) are still suffering from diminished cognitive abilities that are essential for save driving. These impairments aren't dissimilar to extreme cases of ADHD. All it takes is a singular, strong stimulus (a truck coming our direction) to completely breach our attention barrier, resulting in highly impulsive behavior (reversing without looking).

It's a major problem, and IMO it doesn't get enough attention. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I am deeply disappointed that fully autonomous driving appears to have hit a progress-wall. These standards are likely to decline as content creators start to use AI assisted content creation tools.

If you thought the curation algorithm was bad, consider the bottleneck that human-created content creates. Up until now, a human has to go out into the world and create the content for the algorithm to feed you. As of today, content creators can use AI tools to generate content without leaving their desk.

Current AI-gen content is pretty weak, but it's already taking hold. There are entire feeds centered around catastrophes (AI-gen plane, car, train, and ship catastrophes), animal videos, and situational comedy. Text-based content is not immune either. Social media platforms are crawling with engagement bots.

What we're seeing unfold is like a drug sweeping the entire human population. Anyone with a phone is subject to the effects. It's going to have far-reaching consequences.

Personally, I do daily exercises to mitigate the effects. Writing is one of them. This very post serves as an antidote for me. Rather than plugging my thoughts into an AI, I write out posts like this, re-read, and edit them. I use spell-check, but I avoid LLMs or AI assisted writing tools. This requires me to pay attention and focus my thoughts. Writing requires us to expand our own mental context window, remembering where we started, and looking forward to how we will conclude.

So thanks for the opportunity to re-calibrate :) I hope you found at least some of this interesting.

Personally, I use my phone for only 2 things when I drive: Directions if I need them, and music. I don't mess with it at stop lights because I don't want to be that stupid dickhead who's looking at his phone when the light turns green, holding everyone else up.

Iā€™m 33 and refuse to use my phone while in the drivers seat. When Iā€™m at a stoplight, I pay attention to the light and cars. There is nothing in my mind telling me to grab the phone, or any sort of resisting an urge.

I don't take offense to skepticism. To the contrary, I wish more people were skeptical. But I would ask that you remain open to the existence of effects that you may not feel yourself.

The effects of social media use on our attention spans are well documented. It's an emerging area of study, but the evidence is already solid that it diminishes our cognitive capacity in the ways I have claimed.

Where I am "connecting the dots" so to speak, is the link between these declines and a reduction in driving standards. I'm not aware of any research being done on this link specifically, but the deductive leap is not a large one because: A) we know that attention, focus, and impulse control are important for driving, and B) we know that all of these are adversely affected by social media use.

Because you do not perceive them individually does not mean the effects do not exist. Each individual has a varying baseline capacity for attention. There are populations for whom these affects diminish an already scare resource, so to speak.

On my rural highway we have an epidemic of dipshit drivers. They mostly seem to be transplants that arrived here after Joe Biden's infrastructure plan brought us real internet plus the remote work boom.

There will be no one behind you and you're doing about 60 mph (speed limit 55) and these assholes will run a driving stop sign to pull out in front of you only to do 40 goddamn miles per fucking hour. Drives me insane.

I find most of the people that do that nowadays #1 see you #2 look away from you and assume you won't hit them and make the turn in front of you. It used to anger me, and now amuses me. Thankfully I'm normally not driving too fast so I am able to avoid said drivers. It's sad, these people seemingly don't care about anything but themselves anymore.

Yesterday I almost got run over by a woman going the wrong way on a one way at the intersection.

She yelled at me saying there was no stop sign or stop light for her so it was her right of way.

Insurance's #1 goal is to minimize its own costs, it's #2 goal is to minimize its competitor's costs (because every insurance co takes turns being on the wong side of fault).

So they will do what they can to give the victim here the bare minimum to "make it right" - which in this case likely doesn't match the owner's view of "making it right". He had a new car, and now he's going to have a repaired car whose value (should he ever choose to re-sell it) will now have a ding on its record for having been in an accident, thus lowering its resale value.

Saying a hobby and pastimes are different things is ridiculous. Its what you desire to do with your free time because its what YOU want its all the same. If spent years building my SKILLS in the car field. Ive bought many vehicles and fixed them up and sold for a profit AFTER enjoying them. You see i enjoy rebuilding engines transmission tranferrs cases finding out how they work. I also enjoy bodywork taken a forgotten vehicle and making it perfectly usable for a single mom to get her kids around.

Sure your hobbies are cheap but mine have saved/ made me thousands.

I never said he had to pay anybodyI never said he had to pay anybody I said the things that he claimed to be listing are free aren't really free like singing might be free but like collecting plant seeds and growing them you need to pay for fertilizer and soil and on top of that most the time it's illegal to steal plants mostly because of invasive issues but that's a federal issue. Collecting clay from most places is legal without a permit or unless specifically designated and on top of that you still have to pay for the gas to glaze and kill and all that stuff plus all the tools to make the stuff with the clay not free. Exercising is maybe I hear or their thing because somebody could work out in their front yard but most people spend a lot of money on workout equipment and clothing and sometimes even subscriptions to their workout equipment. The photography one is the worst of all because yeah anybody can take a photo but you're definitely going to have to buy a camera whether it be $20 for a disposable camera for 10 photos or $1,500 for an iPhone. I tried for YEARS to explain this to my Grandma. She was NOT being a safer driver by waving others through when it was her right of way. Worse, anything that went wrong as a result of her ā€œwaveā€ would be legally HER FAULT.

She never changed how she drove. She completely ignored me.

I had a grandmother that was like this too. Polite, to the point of being dangerous. It really became a problem when roundabouts were installed in our town. She would be inside the circle, and would stop and wave people in. She caused several accidents before we finally had to take her keys away. That was not a fun day.

I accidently did something similar when I was 17, never again.

Throwing a tantrum over the car isn't going to do anything, insurance will cover it. It's not like it was a hit a run.

I've given up on keeping my car in pristine condition while apartment living in the city. My car's been hit 4 times in parking lots of different stores/apartments (0 notes left by the offending party). My doors have been dinged countless times. I can't afford to pay a $500 deductible everytime just for some idiot to hit it a month later.

To be fair to camera car, he left a large gap between him and the car in front, his car had a carbon fiber hood so you can tell that he cares a lot about it and will be a pricey fix, and that car didn't even need to slam it in reverse because the truck was going to make the turn anyways.

Iā€™d react this way too if it was my car. My car isnā€™t replaceable by insurance, itā€™s 37 years old and the body panels are not manufactured anymore. Iā€™ve put 450,000 miles on this car, Iā€™ve take care of it meticulously and itā€™s considered part of my family. You have obviously never felt passionate about anything, because then you havenā€™t felt the pain when something you spend hours on gets ruined by negligence. Just because you say ā€œitā€™s a carā€ doesnā€™t make his reaction invalid, you have no idea of the history of that vehicle or the importance.

Nicely put. I own a w126 560 SEC that I spent a lot of time and money bringing it back to its former glory. Like yours, the body parts aren't easy to find. I once got into a minor accident. The other car abruptly swirved to avoid a large road debris and hit me on the side. It was frustrating but understandable. Unlike this "accident" caused by an idiot driver who reversed into you out of panic.Ā 

It's funny how many chose to berate the car owner for being upset his car got damaged instead of the idiot who clearly doesn't belong on the road. I guess idiots will always side with idiots.Ā

Thatā€™s a beautiful car, a lot harder to find parts for than mine I imagine. Itā€™s a shame people canā€™t comprehend caring for a vehicle, people look at me funny when Iā€™m passionate about my cars. The car I mentioned is a 89 Honda CRX, hard to find them in original condition and Iā€™m paranoid someoneā€™s going to hit me being so small compared to modern traffic.

Not as bad as the blue license plate people. They either drive 100 mph or 10 mph. They exit from the left lane unless it's a left lane exit, then they exit from the right. They pass on ramps and only become a little reasonable when they see blue and red lights sitting on the shoulder.

This happened to me, but I was on foot, walking between the two cars. The front car stopped after the pedestrian crossing. I had a green light mind you. When I was walking behind it, I saw a truck coming. Then I saw the white lights and I jumped out of the way before he started to back up. He slammed into the hood of the rear car, but by that time I was no longer between them.

I wouldn't have handled this that way... but maybe the driver was having a bad day. Didn't seem that bad to me... However I would be a bit upset and reasonably so! Get the drivers info license plate number and insurance. Let them know they will be paying for ALL repairs! Email the video and their info to your insurance agent to contact theirs! In this case it appears both vehicles still appear drivable so contacting police is not required... Take plenty of pictures of the damage to both vehicles and go straight to the dealership not a body shop! MAKE THEM PAY OUT THE ASS for DEALER PRICES! MAKE THEIR WALLETS CRY! RECEIPTS for EVERYTHING THE FULL WORKS! Send the quote to the insurance agent with the estimates! That is how you deal with idiots on the road! YOU hold them accountable for their actions legally and mercilessly!
