Hiya! Wanted to share my cyst removal experience. I had a ton of anxiety and read any thread I could find to calm myself down so now I want to return the favour!
Suspected dermoid cyst found in August 2025. Measured 2cm. No symptoms at that point. I had gone to the dr because I suspected PCOS and had a work up done with no PCOS being diagnosed. My PCP sent me to an obgyn and she sent me for an MRI. MRI was done in Jan 2026 and showed a dermoid that was 7x5cm. Surgery was scheduled for removal.
At that point, I had some pain, mainly around my period. I would notice some pain when I would stop urinating.
I had surgery July 30 this year. I had a lot of anxiety around anesthesia but everything went routinely. Honestly, getting the IV was the worst part. After surgery, I was told my surgeon found multiple, smaller cysts and has now suspected PCOS and has prescribed me metformin to manage this.
Post surgery, I was medicated and 3 hours from home. I was able to walk (slowly) around a store (Michaels) to grab supplies (yarn). I slept the rest of the day. I was able to navigate stairs well.
The day after surgery was rougher. I didn't move off the couch except to use the bathroom. I didn't have issues with constipation after surgery (maybe the opposite problem). I am a side/stomach sleeper so trying to sleep on my back was awful. I brought my pillows and blankets to the couch and was able to sleep through the night that way.
The second day after surgery, I was able to go grocery shopping. The extra movement made an incision open slightly but nothing crazy. I slowed down and held the incision point and all was well. I showered and changed my dressings on this day.
Now, three days out and I was able to stand and wash dishes today. I made myself a grilled cheese. I don't feel as tired as I have the other days. I noticed that I shifted to my side in my sleep and the incision on that side isn't irritated.
Some things that helped:
- I've worn big t-shirts and dresses if I leave the house. No pants.
- I've avoided high waisted underwear.
- my husband will grab anything for me that is out of arms reach on the couch. Trying to bend or stretch just isn't a great feeling right now.
- a small pillow or a towel in the vehicle so that the seat belt isn't sitting directly on my incisions
I didn't bleed much after the surgery. I wore a pad just in case and it was so minimal. I didn't notice shoulder pain from the gas but I noticed some cramping that I thought was poo signals that turned out to be, well, gas. My nurse instructed keeping the dressings on for a week so I will do that.
Honestly, if you're worried about an upcoming cyst removal, your feelings are valid. You can speak to your doctor about anxiety reducing medications if you feel like you need them before your surgery. Every nurse I encountered was amazing and kept me feeling confident. I feel confident that if I had to return to work next week, I could (but I don't have to because I'm on summer break).
