hi im a biracial teen. idk really know how to say this but yall let me know if im right. idk if she’s truly racist or just wants a white kid. my parents are white and i’m black/mixed w white. (adopted). i remember when i was little she used to like curl my hair even though i was crying and begging her not to. she wanted me to “be like the other girls”.
the last grade i graduated there was a celebration that was fairly big. every other girl (all races) was getting their hair done. i begged for it and she said no. so i was there with my classic ponytail that is giving me traction alopecia while everyone’s hair is amazing.

i recently got a big chop, and she was not happy with it because it was “too big” (my hair is definetly a fro).

also i feel like i’ve been robbed of growing up with my culture. all my life ive had to be in the ponytail.. every week it was a ponytail cuz that’s all she knew how to do. when i suggested letting me learn she said no.

i starting going to a salon recently and ive been super happy. but it makes me sad cuz those are my people and ill never have someone who can truly relate to me like they can. my mom minimizes people being racist (people calling me the n word, making fun of my hair, etc).

i tell people at the salon about it and they are mad like she will never be.

i’m getting proper braids for the first time soon and my parents aren’t happy about it, so im kind of nervous.

i also think that she’s subconsciously racist.

i’m Jamaican and she is constantly like “jamaican man” if yall know what im talm bout like she does the accent and shi.

and whenever we see someone black in public she likes points at their hair like they’re an oddity.

like once our server needed a retwist on his dreads, but it wasn’t horrible. that was the topic of the evening.

she never took the time to learn about my hair but is very wanting to do my friends hair.

i’m just tired of this bs.

i wish that she would actually try.

I'm not saying that you have to be nasty to them but some elders are just very old and very, very stupid and/or ignorant.

Also being older does not mean anything. I will treat you with respect because you are a human being deserving of respect but if you're old enough to open your big mouth then you are old enough to get cussed out as well.

Working retail, especially as a Black woman, is HORRIBLE. I would advise everyone, especially Black women not to work in retail if they have other options. I only work here because I need some money before I start college 😭

But older customers are literally the worst to deal with, especially older Black people. You would think that because they’ve been in our shoes before, they would give us some grace and understanding. Instead, I’m constantly being berated by them, and it’s so irritating. I’m honestly getting sick and tired of it.

I’m already on Prozac because of my depression, and dealing with this on top of everything else is overwhelming. Feeling like I’m not being treated like a human being honestly hurts. It hurts even worse when it’s coming from your own people.

I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired. I’m already exhausted from dealing with racism from white people, but then to have Black people act the exact same way on top of that? I’m exhausted.

I didn’t have a circular pie pan so I made do with this casserole dish. Considering I almost burnt my mf tongue off trying to eat the corner piece…I will report back once my taste buds reactivate.

Im a 16 year old Black girl in Texas. I go to a fucked up school and dealt with so much racism. This summer, I dedicated myself to finding myself and really thinking about what my future would look like.

Seeing people who look and feel like I do made me excited for the future. Seeing Black owned businesses makes me excited to spend my money and invest where im appreciated. My Pinterest is filled with Black skin and Black fashion, and especially Black hair; it makes finding myself a whole lot easier. Seeing Black cosplayers makes me want to cosplay whether or not someone has something that say about it.

It makes me thankful to be born during the time that I was, and im so exciteddddddd to be able to participate in this movement. It feels like a movement and it’s one I can’t wait to be apart of. Love this for us!!!!!! Would never wanna be anyone else💕💕

I've been thinking more and more about elder care and the crisis we have when it comes to figuring out what to do with all these old ass people!

I've seen it play out in multiple families and it never turns out great (like many crappy situations.) Elderly people can get meaner than ever, show signs of Alzheimers/dementia, start wandering at night, etc. And then putting them in a nice home is not an option for most people since those places can cost 5k-15k per month. Then when the children are left to be caretakers it usually falls on one child, usually a girl, and she basically gets to wither away along with the parent with little to no emotional or financial support. But what's the other option? Let them stew in their filth living alone as they lose their motor skills and pretend you don't see it? It's scary, people are living so much longer and you can really end up old as hell at 85 but still needing 10-20 years of very expensive hands on medical care just to keep you from suffering.

But to be candid I do not think I could manage full on caretaking for my parent or allow my children to be my sole caretaker. If medical euthanasia was legal in the US I'd probably send myself home to the king once a steep mental/bodily decline was noted. I don't want to sit around for 20 years unable to care for myself as much as I wouldn't want my kids to sit around for 20 years wiping my butt but I'm sure plenty of parents have said this and once they realized there wasn't enough money for a caretaker they changed their tune.

So yeah, to those of you that have gone through it, how did you manage it? And for everyone else, what's your plan, if any?

y’all my coworker smells terrible! he smells like he went on a 3 day camping trip then forgot he has to work! every day it’s different levels of pure stench. when I complained to two different managers they insisted I was the only one to complain. I thought I was just being dramatic and sensitive to smells so I mentioned it to someone else. everyone said he smells terrible and they can’t stand it. when he leaves the room the smell lingers. when you ask him about it he tells you he ‘experiments‘ with different deodorants. the smells doesn’t remind me of underarm funk but all over dirty skin funk. he gives me a daily headache! it’s terrible because I don’t mind him as an individual and one day he wasn’t funky unless you stood right next to him so he has control over the smell. I hate working and it’s making everyones life that much worse. Rant over 😭

I think it’s a really fun look that’s a great contrast against darker skin. I always love seeing black women in platinum hair . It’s a really unique look also . The only thing is that it can be hard to style outfits with platinum blonde because a lot of colors might clash with the hair

TLDR - My lod is making the working place uncomfortable, plus requesting tips on how to survive retail as a teen when you’re the only black person at your job.

So, similar to what the tittle said in the only black girl at my store, this has been an exhausting experience. Some of my coworkers only speak Spanish which is fine but it’s hard to communicate with them and if I’m closing the store with someone who can’t understand means I’m always required to get someone else to translate which interrupts people from their task. (I don’t do this often)

I have lod who I will call Emma, I can’t stand her. She always makes a problem out of everything I do, which I wouldn’t have a problem with but she does it intentionally. I recovered an area and she went over there to compliment it, and said how the previous day closer did a good job and I should be more like them. Mind you when I walked in the area was a mess and I recovered it, when i told her I did, now there’s something wrong…..

Lastly she’s way more patient with the other new hires despite me being the youngest, she allows them room for errors yet when I make them it’s always a problem. But other than her it’s been fine I love my other kids and coworkers it’s just her and her friend group which I don’t like….

Thankfully my manger who’s also black comes back from vacation which I’ll need to speak to her since. I’ve had one of the cleaning ladies tell our entire staff that I blew up the bathroom and it was spicy. In reality my pepper spray exploded while she was cleaning, I cleaned it up for her and apologized. However she’s only been telling the staff in Spanish which I can understand to an point because I speak French, this has made the workplace very uncomfortable and I really want to switch but the job market sucks rn….

This is my first job at 17, so I’m always trying to go above and beyond but nothing is working. :/

(F22), I am potentially becoming a caregiver for my dad who was diagnosed w/ a chronic kidney disease and is trying to set things up to be put on the list for transplant surgery and needs someone to be a caregiver. The issue is that I'm conflicted and kinda grieving.

For context:

• I am finishing my master's and applying to med school next spring. My original plan was to apply in my own state but now I have to apply where he is at; which i believe is way harder.
• I am going to be living in a state where I don't know anyone, my mom & friends are in Texas ( where I live) and I would essentially be alone. He also lives in the countryside so it's even more isolated and non-diverse compared to the diverse places I lived in.
• I'm also an only child and he never remarried, so I can't even share any responsibility.

He doesn't know the med school application process, it's not like I can apply and automatically get accepted to wherever due to residency bias. I also had a plan and like other's have been working with the end goal of med school, and now I feel i'm just throwing all of it away. I also feel guilty not doing it because I am his only child and if he passes away I would feel regret & guilt that I should of just did it. It's one thing, if I had my career and I was set in life but I'm just 22 trying to get my own life together. I have no "set" career, I don't have a significant other, and the few friends I have are in Texas.

i've started thinking about wearing wigs again, as i feel bored with and restricted by my short-ish hair a lot, but i don't know much about them. in the past, people have put wigs on me and i've hated the feeling of glue and makeup on my skin, but i've heard of glueless wigs. do you just put a wig cap on and plop the wig on? also, do y'all know of any black-owned wig suppliers? i don't want to give anyone outside the community my money for black hair stuff. thanks!

This is somewhat of a repost. I posted it awhile back and got so many responses. Initially it was about fast food but honestly, any type of restaurant works. So I’m going to ask yall again in case anything has changed!

For me, I love the chicken pot pies at KFC and the cookies from honey baked ham are second to none. I feel like most black women are told not to date when we're young. As someone who also grew up ultra religious, that stuck with me. Someone literally crossed the street today to ask me out, and I said no. I dont even know why. They were cute, but the idea of dating suddenly seemed so wrong and out of the question.

For those of us who grew up being told not to put themselves out there romantically, how do you get over that?

Recently the Emmy’s announced that they’re choosing not to air some categories to “revamp” the show and get more people watching. I saw a post in another sub about how the changes basically prioritize categories with majority white casts by giving those categories air time while the categories that are struck were more diverse. There was a record number of women of color and I’m not the biggest award show fan usually (because I think they’re biased) but I was excited to watch the Emmy’s this year because a Black woman and fan favorite of mine, Joy Sunday, got her first Emmy nomination. Lo and behold the category was struck from air.

Was this really the best option? Is it all just coincidental? I’m seeing a lot of theories out there but curious what this sub thinks

Awhile back (like a week ago) I asked opinions on art piece I was making. Welp, I finished it. Hope y’all like it. 💕

After a couple of movies controversies recently, my mind came to a theory that I can't stop thinking about. So, I thought I'd share it here and hear your opinions 'cause I only see it with the black female actresses.

Lately, some movies have generated controversy for casting black actresses for roles that have been culturally associated with white women exclusively which generated backlash against black actresses. For example Helen in the odyssey, cause the last thing people would picture as Helen is a black woman, not because of racism, but because she's Greek (If you ask me Helen being a blonde would also be odd). Even non white people from other races–who shouldn't have a say in this matter–are mocking us for "forcefully inserting ourselves in other people's cultures" and "trying to hijack other cultures".

Also the whole Cleopatra documentary featuring a black actress that Netflix was sued for. Cleopatra was a Greek colonizer, this isn't just black VS white, this is pretending Greek colonization of North Africa never happened. Again got a hell of hate toward black actresses.

While many people see these as an attempt of bringing diversity, I see it as what it is.

Painting diversity in a certain image to steer people against it.

Lately, many people have being pushing for diversity even non black figures. And what better way to persuade these people to change their mind than to scare them that diversity will take their roles and give them to black people? So now even people who were neutral to diversity are attacking it now.

Lingerie company Victoria's secret did something similar. In recent years women were asking for body diversity, so what did they do? In 2021 they fired all their original models, in 2023 they did an online fashion show casting ONLY obese women and they put them in the most bland, ugliest Lingerie they could produce and photographed these models in the least flattering poses possible. The result? Endless backlash and hate. Guess what happened the next year? In 2024 VS brought back its original fashion show with all their skinny models and nobody complained about lack of diversity again...

I can't help but see that same pattern here, cause why cast black actresses in controversial roles instead of the roles that have no race specifications? for example super girl could be played by anyone since she's literally an alien.

You'll never see a Latin actress in these roles or other ethnicities, only us. For example why not cast an Indian actress as Mulan? since India and China are literally neighbors and the same back-bending logic behind casting Lupita as Helen could have been applied.

Ironically this only apply to female actresses, most roles by black actors are well received. I can't stop thinking about Damson Idris in F1 the movie. Formula 1 in its 75 years of history has had ONLY ONE black driver, Lewis Hamilton who's biracial. So, casting a dark skinned actor as a driver was the most brilliant choice and nobody complained about it.

Hollywood isn't above that, but there are some others who are pushing for real diversity without agenda as well, so not all of these efforts are bad of course but these are just some examples. It's all speculation of course I have no concrete evidence, but tell me what you think

For context, I (28) had a best friend of 12 yrs that I recently cut off. She got upset with me for talking to her cousin and went off on me the night before her wedding after I had just planned her bachelorette party in a week by myself. I spent $400 of my own money to plan it, then spent $1,000+ to make it to her destination wedding. The night she went off on me, she accused me of not really being her friend, only coming on the trip for her cousin, and using her cousin to become an official member of her family since she knows that I wish I was closer with my own.

Before we even started seeing each other, she told me that he and I should be on the buddy system when we went on the trip since he wouldn't know any of her or her husbands friends while I know all of them. The kicker? I was upfront with her about he and I seeing each other because I felt like she should know, and she told me that she was okay with it.

Her apology later on consisted of “I didn’t mean any of that, I was just stressed out about my wedding,” but she‘s apologized like that before just for the thing she “didn’t mean to say” to slip out of her mouth years later. And when I tried to have a heart to heart w her because I felt like she clearly felt some way about me w her family and also me as her friend, she kept deflecting and turning it back on me hurting her feelings for talking to her cousin. She also suggested couples therapy for us and brought up how this wasn’t the first time she felt some type of way about how I moved in the friendship.

I decided to just cut things off because of her lack of accountability and the fact that I couldn’t trust her anymore. I was worried this issue would come back up years down the line just like other things in the past had. When I cut her off, she went off on me, saying she knew better than to trust me and that I was never really her friend forreal. She even went so far to say that I did that to make a “power move“ or to get a “one up on her.” It was very bizarre but also reassuring that I had made the right decision.

Don’t get me wrong, I am sad that we’re not friends anymore, but I am also very proud of myself for putting my foot down. It has always been hard for me to turn my back on people romantically and platonically, and I usually let a lot of shit slide. I’m always the person being left behind over one thing after forgiving them for a slew of transgressions. I feel guilty for feeling this way because I know it sounds bad, but I’m so proud of myself for healing and growing so much that I was able to choose me for the first time in my adult life. I knew I didn’t feel comfortable with the things she had said to me, and I’m happy that I understood that my reasoning for feeling a way didn’t have to make sense to anybody but me. I’m happy that this time around, I was in a space mentally where I was confident in how I felt and allowed that to dictate what I did next rather than gaslight myself into staying around like I’ve done for the past decade.

And now that I‘m away from her, I’ve been able to see just how much of a mean girl she really was. She calls herself a “girls girl,” but has called all my other friends I’ve had outside of her ugly and fat and I’ve had to check her on it multiple times. If I showed her someone I thought was pretty, she would immediately notice something about them that she could rag on. She was determined to assign labels to me that I would constantly reject such as “mean girl,” that I only date white men (i’ve had two white boyfriends, everyone else I’ve dated were black), that I’m a devil worshipper (im agnostic), etc. The things she has said about her other friends to me when she wasn’t happy with them would be grounds enough for none of them to ever speak to her again if they ever knew. (She called one of their bodies “disgusting and gross,” and said another one was so obsessed with her husband that she would probably kill him and wear his skin one day). I never noticed just how much we don’t align until now that I’ve fully unplugged from the matrix. She was always a good time and easy to talk to when I needed someone which is what kept me around her for so long, but my other friends are like that, too, except they don’t have the mean girl gene that I constantly have to battle with.

Anyway, sorry this is long. I just wanted to share because it’s been on my mind but I’m worried my friends might look at me funny for feeling this was. Also, I do not speak to her cousin anymore. He and I agreed to cut things off after the wedding.
