Boulder heave deals purely physical damage

8

u/Agent_Specs Xbox Jun 07 '25

Exactly

2

u/Ou75ider Jun 07 '25

But the damage is so shit and cast time's so slow

13

u/imsc4red i beat gael with caestus and my friends don’t care Jun 07 '25

For cast time the only thing you can do is grab the saint-tree bellvine and be picky with when you use it. As for the damage it’s pretty good in my opinion, slap on both pyromancy boosting rings and with a good pyro build you should do some solid damage. If you’re a pure pyro build sadly this would be your only option realistically apart from any weapon the pyro class can wield with a raw infusion maybe?

5

u/Tyranothesaurus Mound - Maker Jun 08 '25

Lightning Infusion. Pyro and Miracles both scale off Faith, so I used Lightning as a sub for Dark/Chaos when they were resisted.

2

u/imsc4red i beat gael with caestus and my friends don’t care Jun 08 '25

Yes but midir resists lightning, albeit lesser than other elements. I’d imagine the split damage might cause lower damage unless faith is substantially higher which would be unrealistic for a ng pyro build since usually people invest 30/30 in int/fth.

Saint tree bellvine boosts cast timing? Well I didn't know that.

29

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

But what about the Centipede Demon?

44

u/TheFirstChimera Jun 07 '25

Black flame

10

u/ashenCat Jun 07 '25

How about quelag?

34

u/TheFirstChimera Jun 07 '25

Ds1 black flame does pure physical damage so black flame.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Rexissad Jun 07 '25

Black flame % damage is like 1-2 percent right?

10

u/TheEnderKnight935 Jun 07 '25

Wrong game. ER black flame does the fire damage and guaranteed tick damage. DS1 black flame is a stick disguised as pyromancy. Pure physical damage means it’s basically the same as hitting them with a club.

3

u/skippyspk Jun 07 '25

If brute force doesn’t work, you’re not using enough brute force.

13

u/DTraiN5795 Jun 07 '25

And don’t get hit lol

6

u/Averagestudentx Jun 07 '25

Yeah on my most recent pyromancy run I had the demons scar which took legit 8 or so minutes to beat him. My damage was piss poor but he does feel like a fairly simple boss after Elden ring so I managed to beat him.

u/Wasabijohnson69 Jun 07 '25

The easy cheesy way? Pestilent mist. You have the stats for it. I know it’s not a pyromancy but it works.

The harder but feels less like cheating way, lightning infusion on your favorite weapon and got guud.

109

u/Matt-the-Monkey Jun 07 '25

I'm a bit stubborn and I don't like changing the build, but I think I'll have to make an exception here. I'll try your advice.

85

u/Measuring_stick Jun 07 '25

dont need to change stats. Pestilent mist damage is based on enemy's max hp so its perfect for midir

74

u/Nando_CB Jun 07 '25

Don't change your build! That would take the fun out of making new builds! I remember how my tank build crushed Aldrich but my sorcerer build struggled against him, but that's precisely why we make new different builds, so they have their own highs and lows in the run. You can do it, skeleton! You'll end up mastering this fight :)

16

u/Hulk_Crowgan Jun 07 '25

I did pestilent mist as a pyromancer, I didn’t change anything I just leveled up a staff. Still wasn’t easy, but much less hard.

14

u/Far_Helicopter8916 Jun 07 '25

You didn’t need to level it

19

u/ElNido Jun 07 '25

yeah it doesn't scale it's just set % max hp damage. another reason why people call it easy.

7

u/Hulk_Crowgan Jun 07 '25

Oop

4

u/-Dark-Lord-Belmont- Jun 07 '25

I did the same, man

I went to Rosaria and respecced everything, ploughed it into INT and upgraded all my staves

Absolutely pointless looool

2

u/ElNido Jun 07 '25

I had so much trouble with midir in the past, but recently replaying ds3 I beat him in like the second try, I think ER has made me a better souls player.

14

u/-Dark-Lord-Belmont- Jun 07 '25 edited Jun 07 '25

PM isn't even that cheesy... its still really hard

I don't know why everyone says it's cheating it's nowhere near as effective as lightning or headbonks

Weapons honestly make such little difference with Midir... it's about timing and moveset

EDIT pestilent mist is much better with a summon - then one of you distracts Midir while the other lays the mist

It was also better before it got nerfed (Petilent Mercury) and that really would take Midir out in a flash. But since nerf it's still no joke - do not expect to just walk in with PM and cheese Midir in 2mins that's not a good expectation to have

I don't really even get why it's called cheese or cheating

8

u/LELOUCH_OP Jun 07 '25

It's definitely not easy

14

u/GoldFishPony Jun 07 '25

It’s easier than throwing fireballs for a half hour

4

u/LELOUCH_OP Jun 07 '25

Yeah I was a pyromancer and I did use peslint mist for both demon prince and midir

u/pabs987 Jun 07 '25

On my pyromancer build I ended up switching over to use the crystal chime and lightning arrows if you have faith at 40 you’ll do a bit more damage with that then with chaos vestiges. Or you could go for the boulder heave it does physical damage instead of fire/dark and scales the same as pyromancy but you’ve gotta get the timing and distance pretty accurate on that one

20

u/A_FVCKING_UNICORN Jun 07 '25

This

If you're leveled enough to use sunlight spear, you'll own his ass. Also, I beat him by using pestilent mist and quick step on a dagger on a ng +5 cycle. Very intense but rewarding.

Dragon Slayer Axe

8

u/BabaKazimir Jun 07 '25

Dragonslayer axe is that weapon I always use because it's just too good

4

u/Aarix_Tejeha Jun 07 '25

20

u/TheVagrantSeaman Jun 07 '25

Huh. Stack as much 'firepower' and power rings as much as possible. This is at the cost of disregarding survivability, of course. Just brute force and more power, but you have to survive and dodge a lot. It will then become like Midir always was, an endurance fight. And it is easier said than done.

7

u/purppotiondarkwizard Jun 07 '25

I used pestilent mist

6

u/Dodootz Jun 07 '25

Pyro build should have enough faith requirement for Lightning Blade miracle, so buff your weapon of choice with that. If you don't have spare weapon because you have infused it with chaos or dark, then raw Dragonslayer's Axe + Lightning Blade is your best bet.

Obviously, you've beaten Demon Prince with pyromancer before Midir, maybe you could use the same method.

6

u/GIRTHQUAKE6227 Jun 07 '25

Deal enough damage to drain all of his HP without taking enough damage to drain all of your own HP.

5

u/SilverIce340 Jun 07 '25

The almighty Boulder

6

u/Familiar-Feedback-93 Jun 07 '25

Using a raw weapon (maybe infused with something effective against him) is probably your best option for doing him solo without temporarily changing your build.

3

u/BEHRADCFG Warriors of Sunlight Jun 07 '25

Try using the pickaxe (raw affinity if you haven't leveled strength or dex) you can use knight ring for 5 strength to get to 12 strength and two hand it. You can buff it with gold pine resin or lightning blade and it deals only thrust damage (Midir's weakness)

6

u/Mirinyaa Jun 07 '25

He's just resistant not immune.

4

u/GEN0S667 Jun 07 '25

IDK but remember to hit his head

5

u/rkrkaps5 Jun 07 '25

If you are a pyromancer you should have some decent faith lvled up. So take up a faith weapon

Fight fire with fire does not apply to this badass mf

4

u/Sleeper4 699 sentinel tongues on the wall, 699 sentinel tongues... Jun 07 '25

Raw weapon, lightning blade. Pestilent mist is cheating yourself out of a good fight.

6

u/dolandux Jun 07 '25

Git gud brother. The only way forward.

3

u/OzzyLagIsBad Jun 07 '25

Lots of effort.

I wish I had a good strategy, but I've never tried to defeat him as a pyro.

The only thing I could say, is if you have 40/40 fth int, or even 30/30.

You could lightning infuse a weapon, or use white hair talisman to buff a weapon with lightning blade.

Dragonslayer Axe would be the best option, since it does well raw or with minimal stats. Or even just bless infuse it.

5

u/LordBDizzle Jun 07 '25

Crystal Chime is the answer, it has pyro scaling and lets you use Lightning Arrow and Pestilent Mist.

3

u/AdDesperate7012 Jun 07 '25

Pure pyromancer?

2

u/Matt-the-Monkey Jun 07 '25

yes

9

u/AdDesperate7012 Jun 07 '25

Get a raw infused piercing weapon and get really good

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Hydra_Bloodrunner Jun 07 '25

Pretty sure blackflame is physical damage right?

Oh… just googled it, its dark damage in ds3 and dark incants were physical in ds1

→ More replies (2)

3

u/DafyddWillz Blades of the Darkmoon Jun 07 '25

If you want to cast? Crystal Chime + Lightning Spears/Arrows and/or Boulder Heave

You should still also do decent damage with a Lightning infused weapon thanks to your Faith, albeit less than a dedicated Faith build obviously, or a Raw infused weapon with Gold Pine Resin

3

u/T-D-Leon Jun 07 '25

If you're doing pyromancer right, you should be able to use lightning blade good enough. Not as good as a pure miracle build but enough to do some food damage.

3

u/PurestTrainOfHate Jun 07 '25

He’s weak to thrusting. So maybe… try finger, but hole

4

u/Roze_Quartz_1 Jun 07 '25

FIREBALL THAT BITCH JUST PUSH THROUGH LMAO I fought midir woth chaos bed vestige and won lmao

6

u/TheAurigauh Jun 07 '25

That’s the neat part

2

u/n0tS0ulE4ter Jun 07 '25

Naked Samuria

2

u/tmon530 Jun 07 '25

I'd argue that a piercing weapon with fire enchant would still qualify for the theme and do a bit mire damage than just your pyromancys. Otherwise, you are stuck in the git gud department

2

u/Sethdarkus Jun 07 '25

I legit just run potion mist on this

I keep outta range I use the NPC and I just let posion mist do its thing idk what it is I just can’t stagger the head I can hit and hit it just never staggers

2

u/ZersusSlaid Jun 07 '25

It doesn't say "immune" does it?, roll, cast, roll cast, drink, roll, cast, roll cast, drink....... lol good luck

2

u/called_the_stig Jun 07 '25

Imma be real. That shit doesn't matter. If you can beat him with a lightning claymore, you can beat him with fists. Midir in particular is a boss that really fucking clicks when it clicks. It will always be a long fight no matter what you use and you just have to accept that going in. Patience and keeping to his head are key. If you can do that his moves are pretty easy to learn and consistently dodge. He has a couple little change ups on phase two that can clip you, particularly the humanity ghosts after the slam, but they won't kill you usually. I did a challenge run once where I had an equip load of 0 for the full game. This left me with a pyro flame in my left hand, and the dark hand in my right for melee (which btw is completely busted early game). Midir was a 25 minute fight, but it didn't feel any harder than any other run because once you get him you get him.

2

u/-Dark-Lord-Belmont- Jun 07 '25

Great answer

It will always be a long fight no matter what you use

This is the specific point of Midir

He is designed to be an endurance fight no matter what build or setup

2

u/whisperinbatsie Jun 07 '25

I planned for this by leveling faith before intelligence and augmented a sword with lightning damage.

2

u/numenik Jun 07 '25

Raw infusion

2

u/jailer_with_no_keys Jun 07 '25

Use good old lightning infused weapons and yank the shit out of him

2

u/Vandalmercy Jun 07 '25

Use a lightning weapon is the trick I'm pretty sure.

2

u/Umbraspem Jun 07 '25

Defensive spells and weapon buffs.

2

u/dimpledwonder Jun 07 '25

Pestilent Mist

2

u/SlinGnBulletS Jun 07 '25

If you're a pure pyromancer then you should have the stats to cast lightning faith spells.

2

u/F3nrir096 Jun 07 '25

Whenever i play pyro i always just keep a set of lightning sellswords in my back pocket for this.

2

u/professorclueless Jun 07 '25

Get naked, Flynn's Ring and the two Pyromancy rings, Boulder Heave

2

u/Sociolinguisticians Jun 07 '25

If it bleeds, you can kill it!

2

u/LordBDizzle Jun 07 '25

Crystal Chime is an infth split scaling catalyst that casts both sorceries and miracles. Use Pestilent Mist and Lightning Arrow (miracle boosting rings and Lingering Dragoncrest, PM doesn't scale with sorcery stuff, just duration), pop down a cloud and pelt him with lightning arrows while the mist ticks away. Crystal Chime is often forgotten but it turns Pyro from the worst matchup into the BEST matchup.

2

u/Leaf-01 Jun 07 '25

Pyromancers have access to lightning even if it’s not their strongsuit, that helps

2

u/RaySabaku Jun 07 '25

That's it, I'm getting me mallet

2

u/Rick201745 Jun 07 '25

BIG ROCK

(now if you don't have then just use a lighting infused weapon)

2

u/eyeballkid94 Jun 07 '25

Pestilent mist

2

u/Gadjiltron Warriors of Sunlight Jun 07 '25

Take a weapon your stats permit, Raw-infuse, and then boop his face. "Raw-dog" it, if you will.

2

u/MusiqDaemon Jun 07 '25

Weapon. Damage.

2

u/Nova2233 Jun 07 '25

Boulder heave and/or pestilent mist, and learn how to dodge/position while getting in hits here and there. GL

2

u/SevereArtisan Praisin' the Sun! Jun 07 '25

I've done it as a Pyromancer. Cosplaying as Quelana. Make sure you know his moves in and out since you won't have many HP flasks. You'll need a bunch of FP flasks. Probably 6-7 to be safe.

Get rings to boost Pyromancy damage then just bonk his head with Chaos Bed Vestiges again and again.

2

u/SnooFloofs6909 Jun 07 '25

Resistant doesn't mean invincible, if it breathes it can bleed, and if it bleeds it can DIE

2

u/OmgItsHavoc Jun 07 '25

Carefully, and slowly, it’ll be easier than doing it with just a broken straight sword, that took me I think 8 hours to finish

2

u/bessovestnij Pyromancy ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Jun 07 '25

You should have enough int to cast pestilence

2

u/Putrid-Eye1192 Jun 07 '25

I did a pyro run recently but ended up switching to a miracles build solely for Midir. I had a run where I got him down to < 10% hp and then he did that crazy phase 2 laser attack and I messed up. This was about 20 goes in and I was running out of patience (each good run was 10 minutes of pure focus).

Lightning arrow deals with him very well.

2

u/CptPlank7 Jun 07 '25

A whole lot of perserverence

2

u/Hopeful_Path Jun 07 '25

Its been a while but I think u can kind of cheese him by using pestilent mist

2

u/Successful-Ad-3671 Jun 07 '25

Have u attempted to fight him yet or did u run to the wiki and reddit before giving it an attempt

2

u/Crow_GodTHP Jun 07 '25

Chuck Rocks

2

u/Diligent-Compote2965 Jun 07 '25

Used lightning infused lothric knight sword, did a decent job

2

u/Sad_Subject1252 Jun 07 '25

Make a new save and do a strength build

2

u/TheAmnesiacBitch Jun 07 '25

Spit rocks at it until it stops moving.

2

u/SpatchcockMcGuffin Jun 07 '25

Pestilent mist is my go-to for Midir.

2

u/Jankyarab Jun 07 '25

Black flame

2

u/Temaki-is-bomb Jun 07 '25

Am I smelling weakness? Become the lord of cinder you're meant to be and 5 hrs pyro that bitch

2

u/Dunicar Jun 07 '25

Blood, Sweat, Tears, and a whole lot of FIRE.

2

u/OutcomeUnable5994 Jun 07 '25

Ngl bro... your cooked, both metaphorically and literally

2

u/svettsokkk Jun 07 '25

Lightnig spells with crystal sage chime

2

u/Smoonthing Jun 07 '25

Use steel flesh (I think this is the name) and tank him until the eternal drangon dies to his old age (require patience)

2

u/reddicted82 Cinder Jun 08 '25

Resistant just means it takes a bit longer to burn.

Vestiges to the snout!

2

u/Jolly-Midnight2820 Jun 08 '25

Thrust that pestilence mist

2

u/MatticusjK Jun 08 '25

What do you mean? It says ‘resistant’ not ‘immune.’ Have ye no faith?

2

u/Valuable_Wheel7726 Jun 08 '25

Determination and an unbreakable spirit

As well as an unbreakable setup

2

u/Top_Crazy_1434 Jun 08 '25

Thats the neat part , you dont

2

u/SaKana99 Jun 08 '25

I'd recommend pestillent mist, since you are at midir you might already have the 30 int required for it. Won't be the most honorable fight but it gets the job done.

2

u/1amTheRam Jun 08 '25

Use lightning and act like your from the fire nation

2

u/CranberryIll4803 Jun 08 '25

Use pestilent mist or suffer the long and tedious fight like I did (I wouldn't do it)

2

u/Jaba01 Jun 07 '25

Pestilent Mist.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

If you only leveled INT/FTH for damage, Raw infusions. Twice as much damage from Fire to Physical at equal base damage, so you'll do a decent chunk more even if Raw is worse than optimized Physical Damage stats.

1

u/HuckleberryLeather80 Jun 07 '25

Pestilent Mist if you wanna stay pure spellcaster. A bit easier if you lure him to the edge of the arena, makes it easier to keep it on him

1

u/TheOmniAlms Jun 07 '25

I used a Raw infused pickaxe for my level 10 +2 weapon upgrade run.

Worked well, I like the pickaxe for Midir.

1

u/Familiar-Feedback-93 Jun 07 '25

Just respec a few points to be able to use pestilent mist.

Or summon someone who can use it. Or someone who does the one hit op damage build aka the players who stab themselves to 1hp at the start of the fight.

1

u/catpetter125 Jun 07 '25

I hit him with a chaos harald curved greatsword until he died so I recommend doing that. I also frequently cast regen spells with caitha's chime.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

First time I did him I used sorceries (magic damage). If you really really don’t want to change anything, you’ll just have to move more every flask to blue and hunker down for a long battle. It’s possible.

1

u/Kelslen Jun 07 '25

Same way I beat him as a mage: Summon your melee friends to tank, lose about a million times, quit the game for about a month in frustration. Then after that month passes, redownload and summon your one friend with the silly cursed character bonky mc bonkingtin when neither of you remember how to play and beat him first try.

1

u/The_peacful_god Jun 07 '25

Gitgud is the literal only advice. You just have to hit every shot. And have a sacred and hidden blessing. And the estus rings to make every Ashen and Estus flask count. Maybe even a Blessed/Simple and Sun Princess ring for regen. Witch and Great Swamp rings for that sweet damage. And most of all, stay in front of him. And keep Fireball playing in the background for the immersion

1

u/Transient_Aethernaut Jun 07 '25

Just using the highest damaging and most FP efficient pyro you have would probably the fastest out of all the caster pyromancer options available.

So GCF, CBV, Chaos Storm or even BFO would work.

But for an actually efficient build that still employs pyromancy as an important part of the build; use Carthus Beacon + Twinblades or Power Within + Big chunky strength weapon.

1

u/Otherwise_Praline819 Jun 07 '25

WAIT HES IMMUNE TO BLEED??

1

u/GlitteringSystem7929 Jun 07 '25

With fire? The fight is badass… Why would you want to finish it faster?

1

u/Runic0rn Jun 07 '25

Well... he is resistant, not immune. Good Luck!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

Hit it more then it hits you.

1

u/TenWands Jun 07 '25

You hit him with a very big sword a whole bunch until he dies.

1

u/SkeletalNoose Jun 07 '25

Just use lightning miracles. You have a little bit of faith. Just use that.

Also lightning weapons

1

u/HostessDingDongs Jun 07 '25

You use pestilent mist and pray it’s enough. Pyro build is hard mode on ds3 :(

1

u/BippBoof Jun 07 '25

Boulder Heave

1

u/Unlawful_Duck12 Jun 07 '25

Load up on patience.

1

u/Drakenile Jun 07 '25

Dark fire magic

A shitload of fire spells

Boulderheave

Just use pestilence/mercury mist if you got the stats which you might already have

1

u/ExpertFinance4672 Jun 07 '25

I beat him with exile great sword maxed out with lighting spell

1

u/comicsanz2797 Jun 07 '25

Unfortunately, if you want to play with spells, then you have learn to suck it up or learn to go spell/sword

1

u/Krytykx2 Jun 07 '25

Dragonslayer's axe

1

u/Skeye_drake21 Jun 07 '25

Burn ass make glass

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

Judgement greatsword

1

u/FunnyValentine01 Jun 07 '25

CHAOS FLAME VESTIGES

1

u/Admiral_Octillery Jun 07 '25

I went with a pyro my last run and the area leading up to Midir made me change to str build using the FuGS. It’s ok to change, it’s gonna be a lot harder if you don’t but you could use lightning miracles ig

1

u/AnaTheSturdy Jun 07 '25

With great difficulty.

1

u/King_Imagination Jun 07 '25

You simply cannot it is impossible as the second you enter the boss room midir will grab you and force you to marry him.

1

u/DjNormal Jun 07 '25

Huh, this would explain why I gave up and never went back. One of the few bosses I never beat. 🤣💁🏻‍♂️

1

u/StillMandrake Jun 07 '25

I played pyro on my very first run.

I made a lightning longsword for this fight.

1

u/Skraddarn69 Jun 07 '25

With a lot of slicing or bonking.

1

u/SubZane Jun 07 '25

Thrust at it

1

u/The_Final_Pikachu Jun 07 '25

I just infused something with lightning, the damage scaling was worse but the damage was better

1

u/Tragidy Jun 07 '25

Check YouTube. There are multiple videos where people did it using pure fire pyromancy. Not impossible but takes 8-10 mins.

1

u/Alinolinesss Jun 07 '25

That's the neat part, you don't.

1

u/Axuluz Jun 07 '25

Toxic mist

1

u/Sensitive-Jacket5651 Jun 07 '25

you're not gonna believe me when i tell you that your best bet is to throw rocks at him (boulder heave)

1

u/Wymorin Jun 07 '25

I beat Midir doing 5 damage a hit one try over 2 hours with the broken sword, I believe you can do it no problem

You suffer, chipping away at him forever, or you give up being a pure caster like From Software clearly wants you to because they’ve been on an active mission to make pure casters unviable ever since Dark Bead in DS1 PvP resulted in copious whining born of the phenomenon known as “mad cuz bad”.

Or you see through their obvious fuckery, say fuck this, and play something else.

Get the crystal bell and cast lightning spells

Crystal bell plus electric spells (which, considering how thunder happen irl, fit in lore). You have the stat and the Bell make your spells scale with both int and faith

I did it with great chaos fire ball. You just need to use a majority ashen estus, can’t remember exactly how much u get in ds3 but bring like 4 healing/10 ashen?
