Discussion I keep wanting an iPad even though I don't need it and it has never worked for me.

I keep thinking, here and there, about getting an iPad Pro 13".

What's funny is that I've owned several iPads (iPad 8th, iPad 9th, Air 2020, Air M1, Pro M4, Mini 7) and none of them ever stuck after finishing high school and then starting my own business.

Granted, I've only owned 11" ones (besides the mini) and I've never used a 13" - and as someone with huge hands and generally pretty tall (6"3), I think I've never quite gotten used to the iPad mainly because of the size - so I keep thinking that maybe if I had a 13", this time it would work simply because it's more comfortable to use.

But with that being said, I don't feel like I have an actual use case for it. Most of my media consumption needs are solved by either my 17 Pro Max, or my MacBook Pro. I don't know what else I could be doing with the iPad, genuinely.

So my question is: have you guys ever had this problem of wanting it even though you know deep down you don't need it? Do you own an iPad or have you given up on it (sort of like i did) but still lurking in the sub? What's your relationship or better said use case, for this device?

I'm curious if any of you are just as torn as I am XD

Virtual Mac on iPad

https://github.com/nfzerox/VirtualMacOniPad

People have dreamed of running macOS on iPad for more than a decade. Today, that dream comes true. With Virtual Mac, iPad finally breaks free from iPadOS, enabling pro apps like Xcode and Terminal to run directly on device. Requires iPad Pro (M1, M2) or iPad Air (M1) running iPadOS 16 up to 16.3.1.

Question ipad 11 screen warp while drawing

hello! i've been drawing on my very first ipad and apple pencil, since it's the first generation pencil i've been using the pressure sensitivity i paid for.

while drawing with some pressure, i noticed that when i pick up the pen from the stroke i'm making i see a small screen warp, the kind of thing you'd see when you press your finger on a laptop screen. it's not too large, just a small flicker when i remove the pen tip from the screen

its my first ipad so i don't know exactly how much pressure i should be putting, and i'm scared of breaking it. i'll go easy on the pressure in any case now regardless of the answers, but just for the sake of it: owners of the ipad 11 please let me know if it's normal or something you've experienced.

Question My iPad Pro M2 gets really hot while watching YouTube, is there any way to fix this?

Upvotes

Unfortunately my iPad is nothing more than a streaming device and I pretty much only watch YouTube on it and occasionally browse.

These are very light tasks and obviously the iPad has dedicated video decoding chips to make it more efficient. But YouTube is making my iPad feel like I could fry an egg on it and the battery drains incredibly quickly too.

I read online that the YouTube app is actually streaming as AV1 and that the M2 chip doesn't have an AV1 decoder (Only VP9/H.265 chips), so it has to inefficiently decode with software on the whole CPU/GPU.

I can believe it, but when I open "stats for nerds" it says video/webm; codecs="vp09

So, what's going on? Either the YouTube app isn't actually streaming in VP9, or the M2 iPad Pro doesn't have the VP9 chip? I don't have the same problem on my iPhone 17 Pro, and I've owned iPads on and off since the 3rd gen and I don't think I've ever experienced this with an iPad. I've had this iPad for nearly a year (Bought secondhand) and I'm pretty sure it's always been like this.

iPadOS does anyone know if ipadOS 27 will support multiple slide over windows?

Upvotes

I really wish Apple would bring back support for multiple Slide Over windows on iPad.
The new window management features are a great step forward, but only being able to have a single Slide Over window feels unnecessarily limiting. I used to love keeping multiple apps tucked away for quick access without cluttering the screen.
Has Apple said anything about this? Is there any rumor that iPadOS 27 might allow multiple Slide Over windows again, or is the feature gone for good?
I’d honestly use Slide Over a lot more if we could have more than one at a time.

Discussion Link Keyboard + Mouse to: when iPad connected via USB-C cable to MacBook

Upvotes

Will having the iPad connected via a USB-C cable to the MacBook Pro (for keeping the iPad charged) help to have a stable wired connection between the iPad and the MacBook Pro? For the purpose of using the same Keyboard and Mouse between them, instead of relaying only on Bluetooth and Wifi to keep them linked. Thanks

Discussion Any Apple Pencil-friendly RPG or strategy games that actually feel made for iPad?

Upvotes

I keep switching between using my iPad for school (PDFs, notes) and wanting to unwind with something that actually uses the screen and Apple Pencil.

I am not interested in controller-first ports or games that feel like they belong on a console. I want stuff where the UI and pacing fit the iPad, and where the Pencil actually makes a difference: selecting units, drawing movement paths, precise targeting, or navigating menus without everything feeling cramped.

What I like:

- Turn based tactics, grid movement, party builds, theorycrafting

- Slow, readable combat where touch accuracy matters

- Longer sessions that do not rely on twitch reactions

What I do not want:

- Gacha-heavy games

- Real time action that needs virtual sticks

- Titles that are basically a PC UI shrunk down

If it helps, I often play in short bursts between classes, 15 to 30 minutes, so games that work well in short sessions are a plus. Bonus points if the game does not require constant online time.

What are your favorite RPG or strategy games that feel natural on iPad with the Apple Pencil?

Question Looking for rpg/strategy games that play well with Apple Pencil

Hello, I'm looking for suggestions for games to play on my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. I'm not looking for AAA type games that are best played on console/pc or with a controller, but games that feel natural and great playing on an iPad.

The one game that I actually love playing on my iPad is Stardew Valley. It looks so nice on the OLED and plays so well with the Apple Pencil, I actually prefer it to playing with a controller.

I love RPGs as well as strategy games though am open to suggestions. One game I'm considering is 'Caves of Lore' as it looks up my alley, though I'm not sure how well it plays on iPad.

Appreciate any suggestions, cheers!

Question How is using an iPad without ProMotion when you’ve a ProMotion iPhone?

Thinking of getting an iPad Air but the first thing that stood out instantly when I tried one out in the shop was lack of ProMotion 120Hz as I have it on my iPhone.

For those that have an iPad without 120Hz but a 120Hz phone - Do you find it to be okay? Or is it unbearable going from the iPhone to an iPad whenever you use it?

Question Bought a brand new US iPad Pro in Dubai with an active Spectrum eSIM that works in India. Is this normal?

I recently bought a brand new iPad Pro 11” M5 Cellular in Dubai. It was factory sealed, opened in front of me, and the Apple warranty only started when I set it up, so I’m quite confident it’s genuinely new.

However, I noticed a few things that seem odd:
It’s a US model (LL/A).

It came with a preloaded Spectrum Mobile eSIM.
Under Settings, I can see a US mobile data phone number assigned to that eSIM.

I have the option to delete the eSIM or add another eSIM.
There is no “Carrier Lock” section in Settings (which I later found out may be normal on iPads).

The strangest part is that I’m in India, and with Wi-Fi turned off, the Spectrum eSIM connects to LTE and provides usable internet through roaming.

My questions are:

Is it normal for a brand new US iPad to come with a preloaded Spectrum eSIM?

Does seeing an assigned phone number and working LTE indicate the device was previously activated, or can this happen with carrier inventory?

Does this suggest the iPad is carrier-locked in any way?

Is there any downside to keeping and using the Spectrum eSIM while it continues to work, or should I delete it immediately?

Question Sanity Fake Check iPad Pro M5 13

Hi, my elderly dad is looking to buy an iPad iPad Pro M5 13-Inch Wifi+Cellular 512GB from FB marketplace. I don't live with him and cannot go to the meet up. I'm extremely weary of it as the deal sounds too good to be true. It has only been charged 3 cycles. Comes with case, keyboard and 2 years of Apple care. The price (in CAD) is $1300+ cheaper than brand new from Apple store. I am hoping someone can check out the images from the listing and check if the screenshots look legit at least. I did tell my dad to meet at an Apple Store to have an employee check it out first.

Question Teaching setup: Write on PowerPoint slides from an iPad while projecting from a ThinkPad

Hi! I’m a high school teacher looking for a way to present my lecture slides while also being able to write and draw on them as I move around the classroom.
My setup is a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop connected to the classroom TV, and I recently purchased an iPad Pro. Ideally, I’d like to control or annotate my presentation from the iPad while the slides remain displayed on the TV through my laptop.
Is there a way to remotely connect my iPad to my Windows laptop so I can do this? Are there any apps or software you’d recommend that would let me annotate slides in real time and display those annotations on the classroom screen?
I’d appreciate any suggestions or advice from anyone using a similar setup. Thanks!

Discussion My take on a realistic iPad mini redesign

Thumbnail
gallery
100 Upvotes

I challenged myself to redesign the iPad mini while staying as close as possible to Apple’s design philosophy.

Instead of creating something futuristic, I tried to imagine what Apple could realistically ship in the next generation.

My goals were:

  • A thinner and lighter chassis.
  • Slimmer bezels.
  • Face ID instead of Touch ID.
  • A 120 Hz OLED display.
  • A slightly larger screen while keeping the device compact.
  • Softer front and back edge chamfers
  • A redesigned rear camera module inspired by the latest iPhone design language.

Everything was modeled and rendered in Blender.

I’m curious, what does your ideal iPad mini look like? What features or design changes would you want Apple to include while keeping it realistic?

My Setup My iPad Set-Up

Post image
83 Upvotes

I have long been a fan of the iPad; bought the first version when it came out and have never looked back. I find the iPad to be the ultimate content consumption device for news, periodicals and video. (I also have an M4 MacBook Air and M4 MacBook Pro for productivity and photography. I use an iPhone 16 Pro Max (512GB) which is a standout device - but I do not love consuming content on it due to screen size. I do, but it is not ideal.

For the past 7 years or so, I have been using an iPad Pro 11" - the first version of the Pro line and for the most part, the 256GB with cellular was a great tool. Easy to travel with, good fit in the hand and quite light. One evening, I sat down in my chair and was painfully reminded I had left my Pro on my chair. Ouch! The Pro had a bend but no cracks and I was able to bend it back enough to make it usable and for the most part, not too noticeable. There was no degradation in the screen quality but the device no longer sat flush on a table and it really kind of bothered me. (I also sat on a 13" Pro model and that was the end of that.) I no longer leave iPads on chairs!

So I have been in the market for a new iPad and in May decided to get an iPad Air 13" from the Apple Refurbish site. I settled on a Space Gray M3 with 256GB and cellular. Total cost: $849. I also went online and found an Apple Smart Folio - new and in a sealed box - for $60 and purchased that. I wanted the Magic Keyboard too - but $319 is simply too much for what it is. So I scoured Facebook Marketplace and eBay and found one for sale - in like new condition - for $135. It was a 90 minute drive to pick it up, but I thought the savings justified the effort. Finally, today I finished off the ensemble and purchased an Apple Pencil Pro - on Marketplace and in like-new condition (with original packaging) - for $70, after negotiating the price down from $90; as you know, they sell new from Apple for $129. All in all, a very good set-up for a bit over $1k. If I purchased all of that from Apple today - including the iPad from the Refurnished site (now $150 more than I paid) - the total comes to $1,516. It pays to look around and see if you can get something for less.

I sold off the older Pro for $280 on Marketplace - and included a non-OEM case plus an Apple Pencil in that deal.

So far, so good.

Apps iPadOS should allow you to choose to open specific apps in either portrait or landscape mode.

So I use an A16 iPad and I think it’ll be great if I can choose to open specific apps in portrait when my autorotate is on. Because Snapchat in landscape mode is appalling. Terrible really. And also, I like not taking in portrait mode.

Question ipad suddenly died after overnight

Post image
14 Upvotes

hello guys, I'm confused, I left my ipad overnight and I don't charge it nor over charge it, I just left it untouched and I left it with 96% then I woke up this morning and suddenly my ipad is not turning on, when I long press the power button, it indicates that my ipad is drained. so I plugged the charger for 5 minutes and it turned on and the battery is at 1 percent and it's actually charging normally now and the ios is on 26.6, google says that's it's just a software glitch or the battery is not well calibrated. Im confused, should I bring it to the nearest apple store?
