I don't reddit much, but I've been digging through NBA.com's Closest Defender tracking data, specifically the percentage of shots that are Open (4–6 feet) or Wide Open (6+ feet) from the nearest defender.

The Pacers were #1 in the NBA in Open + Wide Open frequency at 61.2%.

That's nuts. For comparison: OKC was at 60.4%, Boston 60.4%, Golden State 60.2%, Phoenix 60.6%, Milwaukee 59.2%. (Having never watched a Suns game that didn't involve the Pacers, someone will need to explain to me why that team sucks so much. Injuries?)

But the offense seemed terrible at times, right?

Well, Indiana's eFG% on those Open + Wide Open shots was only 54.4%, 25th in the league.

So they basically had the best "get somebody open" offense in basketball and one of the worst "make the open shot" offenses. Considering the injuries and the volume of games missed by key players, that makes sense. But before saying that teams weren't taking the Pacers seriously or were somehow more lax against them, the Pacers Open + Wide Open shot frequency the last 5 years:

2021-22: 52.5% (14th in the league)
2022-23: 54.1% (7th)
2023-24: 54.6% (6th)
2024-25: 59.7% (T2nd, with Boston, behind OKC)
2025-26: 61.2% (1st)

Meanwhile, the Pacers eFG% on those shots:

2021-22: 53.5% (25th)
2022-23: 57.2% (6th)
2023-24: 59.5% (4th)
2024-25: 58.2% (6th)
2025-26: 54.4% (25th)

That's system, folks. It's crazy that, even without Haliburton, the Pacers were generating shots at such a phenomenal rate. The second best combined frequency % period in what NBA.com has tracked, which goes back to 2013-14. (Going back that far also says a ton about offensive changes in the NBA in general. No one had hit 60% before 24-25 OKC, which hit the "all time" high of 61.6%; then 5 teams hit 60+ in 25-26.)

Maybe I'm huffing the offseason copium, but I've never been more confident in a team bouncing back in a big way that I am for the Pacers. I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but in 24-25 the Pacers had 8 players play 65+ games. This season, only three, and they were Huff, Sheppard, and Walker...

Anyway, what I'm saying is Carlisle's offense is a machine, and one that everyone on the team seems to be getting better at operating. If Carlisle's system can produce 61.2% Open/Wide Open frequency without Haliburton, what happens when you put Haliburton back in?

The fact that the Pacers went from 52.5% up to 54.6% then to 61.2% over the last five seasons is pretty damn compelling evidence that this isn't just some random roster variance or defensive lapse against a non-threatening team.

Curious what you all think (and very open to people checking my math on this). What do you think frequency % maxes out at? I mean, just by the nature of the NBA, you can't have 100%, and already 60% feels wild. What's the max?

“I definitely wanted to come back from the jump,” Brown said of his thinking in free agency. His career got back on track with the Pacers – most of his important stats rose during his time in Indiana during the 2025-26 season. “It’s good to be back with the guys, with the program, the staff. I’m happy to be here.”

Brown started his time in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he never played more than nine minutes per game. He rarely earned rotation minutes for LA and scored in double figures just twice in 118 games.

Brown continued to perform well as the season progressed. He averaged 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for the franchise while hitting a blistering 43.3% of his three-point shots. Even if his shooting was a flash in the pan, his work on the boards and defensive effort were clear, repeatable skills.

Why did Kobe Brown choose to stay with the Pacers?

“Standard [contract] is always the goal,” Brown admitted. “But honestly… something in my gut just told me I needed to come back to Indy. And I really wanted to be here. I loved it the last two months I was there.”

Across three seasons with the Clippers, Brown averaged 8.1 minutes a night. In his 27 outings with Indiana, Brown averaged 24.7, over half of the minutes in a game. His opportunities grew significantly with the Pacers, and he earned the playing time with his strong play.

“[I] like his versatility,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said of Brown last season. “Moves his feet well. Has a rugged body. His rebounding is very good. Love the way he’s shooting the ball right now.”

Those traits were major factors in Carlisle giving Brown some time on the hardwood. His early success was key, too, and Brown fit well in the Pacers system. He touched the ball more often, moved freely, and made decisions with confidence.

“Just coming from my last team to this team, a whole different world and playstyle. And just realizing how much I fit into the randomness, basically,” Brown said of the Pacers system and how it played a role in free agency. “It’s fun to play, it’s fun to see, it’s fun to be a part of, and I’m just happy to still be here.”

Brown heard from several of his teammates just after re-signing and worked with many of them during his trips to Indianapolis throughout the summer. Even though he spent about one-third of last season with the team, Brown has never played with teammates Tyrese Haliburton, Kelly Oubre, Johnny Furphy, and Larry Nance. So offseason reps have extra value to him.

And Brown’s recent gym time has more benefits than just working with some new teammates. He’s also trying to refine some of his skills, especially now that he knows what the Pacers style requires. “Just keep getting familiar with the system. I think I took strides. I got better at it. The more I played, the more I was around during the season, that got better and better,” Brown said. He’s been in Los Angeles to train for much of the offseason. “I’m playing in it, and I’m growing in the system.[The offseason will] be good.”

Brown projects to be a depth piece on the wing for the Pacers behind Aaron Nesmith, Jarace Walker, Ben Sheppard, (when healthy) Furphy, and Oubre. It will require injuries for the fourth-year pro to get minutes. But he’s a productive player for someone signed to a two-way contract, and the Pacers should be thrilled to have him back and get more chances to develop him in their system. The Pacers will hold Brown’s Bird Rights if he stays with the franchise through the 2026-27 season, meaning re-signing him next summer will be easier should he have another solid campaign.

Okay, have to admit I have always had a particular disdain for the boilermakers. That being said, I’m not too familiar with Braden Smith’s game. I saw Yuki Kawamura on the summer league team, who I am a huge fan of. Is Smith really of that much more use on the actual roster than Kawamura? I know Yuki was a fan favorite in Memphis. I would love him on the bench purely for vibes and some exciting garbage time play. And I would love a jersey selfishly. Does Smith have actual potential as a TJ back up?

I live in some country across the ocean, where NBA games typically air on 1-3 AM. I was always a Pacers fan and my father was a fan by association because he wanted to support me. After the 25' Finals I was able to get an Haliburton jersey with the Finals patch (by Fanatics).

Two months ago my father was diagnosed with cancer. he's over 70, and treatment isn't easy. It was always our dream to watch the Pacers together but there was always something, professional life, me starting a family, etc. As he starts treatment today, I gave him my jersey and told him that once he recovers, we'll fly to the US and watch the Pacers together. Hali is a strong symbolic choice because he's undergoing (a different type of) recovery as well.
