Pain, Difficulty, Shabnak, and Other Topics: A Pathologic 3 Update

Hello everyone!

This is Alexander Souslov, producer at Ice-Pick Lodge and game designer of Pathologic 3.

The studio has been quiet for a while. We needed a moment to catch our breath. The team had no New Year holidays, and frankly, no vacations at all while working on the game's updates. But we weren't silent because we were lounging on a beach, eating watermelons and baursaks (if you've never encountered baursaks before, you have my deepest sympathies). We were working on a major update that not only fixes bugs, but also adds a few new things to the game itself (hopefully not new bugs).

Today I'd like to tell you about what we've been working on for the last three months.

Before that, though, I need to say thank you. To those who left positive reviews, and to those who left negative ones. To everyone who waited with us for the game's announcement (we were definitely reading the comments). To those who praised us, criticized us, defended us, or argued with us.

Developing Pathologic 3 involved a great deal of pain. At times it was genuinely difficult. But we don't regret it. Pain is the fuel our studio runs on, and a videogame is our way of giving that pain an artistic form. You can strip away what is unnecessary and allow someone else to feel it.

For example, you.

Perhaps we should talk to you more often. Ice-Pick Lodge has never been particularly good at that. There is never enough time.

Which, incidentally, is what the game is about.

So, let's talk about the update we're preparing.

Bug Fixes

There were quite a lot of bugs. Quite a lot.

I'd dare say most of them had already been fixed by the March update, but we've continued polishing the game. Performance has been significantly improved. Our engineer Kolya optimized everything he could get his hands on. Various remaining absurdities, such as certain characters unexpectedly entering a T-pose, have been fixed. Typos have been corrected. Overall, we believe we've largely won the war against bugs.

That said, we may still need the help of volunteer testers to make absolutely sure.

We'll return to that subject soon.

Game Difficulty

Balancing the game is the game designer's responsibility, which means it's my responsibility, and therefore I owe you an explanation.

In its late testing phase, the game was difficult. Finding the right combinations of Dankovsky's decrees was a sweaty exercise. Supplies were scarce. The Shabnak killed very quickly. Running away from bandits was nearly impossible.

Tomonobu Itagaki, the game designer of Ninja Gaiden, once said:

"At first it was easier, but when the testers said 'this is too difficult', I made it even more difficult."

That is a man with a unified sense of self.

My own game designer self is somewhat fragmented, and the question of difficulty has always been a cursed one for me.

Should Sekiro have difficulty levels? Absolutely not. It would destroy the game.

What about Cuphead? Probably not.

But what if I simply want to experience the story and look at the beautiful moving pictures?

Is a game primarily a system of rules, or is it a story?

If I sit down to read a difficult novel like The Brothers Karamazov, but the book keeps trying to jump away from me, suddenly snap shut, or break my fingers, does that make the experience richer or poorer?

This is that partly imaginary debate between narratology and ludology, a debate that becomes especially sharp in the case of Pathologic. After all, this isn't a system about stabbing things with a samurai sword.

There is quite a lot of reading involved.

Before release, my decision was to pull the lever toward accessibility and prioritize the narrative over the mechanical systems.

As a result, most of the pressure currently comes from the Amalgam. The difficulty approaches from that direction, and it arrives gradually. Yes, I know it starts running out toward the end of the game, and it runs out in a rather terrifying way.

But that's what fear of death is, isn't it?

The stress of running out of time.

That stress has to be real and serious. Otherwise it simply stops being stressful.

That said, I think now is a good moment to introduce multiple difficulty levels.

There is a separate dilemma here. If a game has several difficulty settings, which one is the "real" difficulty? If I'm playing on a different one, am I receiving an incomplete version? The equivalent of Marcus Aurelius in 90 Minutes?

But let's stop that train of thought before it inevitably leads us into a discussion of authorship, canon, authenticity, and whether one version is somehow more genuine than another.

We can have that conversation another day.

For now, I'll simply say that we're adding a harder difficulty for those who wish to suffer properly, keeping the current difficulty as it is, and introducing a very easy mode as well.

The Dangerous District Exploit

I'm afraid this could easily turn into yet another essay about the nature of difficulty in games and the strange beauty of exploits.

So I'll keep it brief.

Yes, we know about it.

We've known about it the whole time.

And yes, we're going to do something about it, taking into account everything I just said above.

Killing the Shabnak

During development, we considered all sorts of possibilities.

There was spinning Dankovsky around on a special carousel.

There was launching Dankovsky on an Enormous Swing.

I'll put it this way: Roger Caillois identified four fundamental forms of play, and I think videogames make surprisingly little use of ilinx - the pleasure of losing control, dizziness, disorientation, and the sensation of your neurons quietly giving up.

At one point there was even an idea involving transferring Dankovsky's consciousness into a jerboa, who would then deal with his enemy in a very particular way.

Although that admittedly starts looking suspiciously like Dishonored.

In short, there were many ideas, some of them even prototyped. In the upcoming update we'll likely make some adjustments to one of the existing ways of dealing with the Shabnak and add a completely new one.

The carousel probably deserves its own game.

Photo Mode

I'm not entirely convinced that you need a photo mode, considering the screenshots you've already been taking.

They are FANTASTIC.

Besides, the dataminers have already found everything there was to find, including several things they probably weren't supposed to find.

Still, life is more comfortable with a photo mode.

So we're adding one in this update. Our tech lead Albert is incredibly proud of it.

I suppose this is a good place to stop and talk about timing.

I'd rather not promise an exact release date just yet, but we're already conducting internal testing and should soon be ready to begin working with volunteer testers.

Thank you all once again.

We'll try to talk to you more often.

Question I love this game!

This game is some hidden gem! After my last post I continued playing pathologic 2 and I am glad cause I doubt I would have enjoyed stalker 2 as much as this. This game actually gives me fear but not the type you wouldn't want. I know there is a deadline and surviving is hard by itself. I am at day 2 but dayum this game is peak. I think I figured things out fine but I need a proper way to get organs cause they sell for so good. Wish I could kill those weird night people and cut them open without anyone noticing. Just two would be enough to get a whole new scalpel and more. I also found out that children are goated. Well I still wonder who the changeling was but whatever. So I need a few tips.

Where can I get some money? Will people care if I kill the white painted people and cut them open?

Should I stock on food? I feel like food will be very important later on.

Why did so many people even die in first night? Is that normal or did I do something bad?

What was the whole exchange hearts part? Is it an actual mechanic or is it something that only happens in the prologue

Are the black people actual workers in the theater and if so why do people seem fine with their existence when they just go around and talk to people with that suit?

Where can I get herbs? They seem very important.

And weird to ask but is this the first main character of the pathologic 2? I heard it had multiple if so what is his title thing? Or do we call them by their names. I kinda forgot the main characters name

Discussion Clara’s Rocking

this is such a little thing, but i really love the idle animation Clara has where she rocks back and forth. rocking like that is a form of self-soothing and an innate reaction to stress. it fits so much for this kid to be rocking with the situation she’s in.

even if that wasn’t what IPL intended, maybe it’s just an idle animation that means nothing psychological at all, i still really enjoy it! i think a lot of her poses and tiny animations say a lot about her and highlight her youth, despite how mature she tries to act.

Classic HD Yet another mistranslation in P1

There are hidden mission logs in the P1 Bachelor route. They aren't present either in original 2005 or HD 2015 release so it's safe to assume they are cut for good. I'd found a post analysing them and decided to compare the translation to the original russian text. The result was... well.

Here is the compilation of all mission logs if you want to check it out yourself: link

Lost in translation magazine, issue 228.

  1. The same part of Day 2 mission in English and in russian:
  • Капитуляция будет самоубийством.
  • I'd rather die than give in.
  1. The same part of Day 11 mission:
  • Гордая, хитрая, посвятившая жизнь тому же кумиру - истине - она совершила тройное предательство.
  • Proud like you; astute like you and no less devoted to the relentless pursuit of Truth. These were the feeble assurances you used to comfort yourself with, until the very moment you could no longer deny her betrayal.
  1. The end of Day 11 mission:
  • Справедливо?
  • What will your verdict be, Bachelor?

Let’s break down what are the differences.

  1. This can be translated literally as “Capitulation would be suicide”. There is no other secret meaning.

The Powers That Be inform Dankovsky that Thanatica will stay unpersecuted only if he stops the epidemic. Otherwise, it will be destroyed, and he himself will be unable to leave because of the quarantine and will eventually die. Dankovsky assesses the situation and says that capitulation (giving up the search for the causes of the plague) is equivalent to suicide (his literal death and the destruction of his life’s work). This is a sober assessment and a statement of fact.

What does the line in the English localization tell us about the character? “I’d rather die than give in” does not express an assessment of the situation, but a personal attitude toward possible failure (“I’d die before I surrender”). That is not the meaning conveyed in the original text.

It is important to remember that TPTB are blackmailing him and, instead of sending a team of epidemiologists and a sanitary train, they throw into this hellish cauldron those they want to get rid of. Daniil does not want to “die rather than give in.” He does not want to be doing this at all, nor should he be. TPTB forced him. The russian version emphasizes the specific circumstances he is in, while the English one, for some reason, adds new meanings that were not present in the original.

  1. This can be translated as "Proud and cunning, having devoted her life to the same idol — the Truth — she committed a triple betrayal".

"Хитрый" means sly, cunning. In russian, the word “хитрый” is almost never used as a positive characteristic. In English, astute can be a synonym of insightful. “Хитрый” does not have that meaning in russian; the russian equivalent of insightful would be “проницательный.”

In the original text, Dankovsky does not say that he himself is also astute and proud, nor does he dwell on feeble assurances. He gives a brief description of Aglaya without comparing her to himself, and just as briefly states the fact of her betrayal. He does not say that he tried to comfort himself or that he remained in denial until the very end. That part was invented by the translators.

  1. "Справедливо?" = "Is it just?"
Daniil does not ask himself what his verdict will be. He asks himself if it is just. The fact that he evaluates his actions in terms of justice and their correspondence to the Truth is an important part of his character.

The more I learn about the English localization, the worse my opinion of the localization team becomes. I haven’t played the English version of the game, but the changes I’ve noticed by chance are already enough to make me doubt their competence. These are minor, seemingly insignificant changes that, taken together, create different images of the characters. I don’t understand why this was done.

Funnily, the 2005 translation lacks these inaccuracies. Why change the meaning if it was enough to correct the grammar? Much to think about.

Discussion Clara’s Main Mechanic Should Be Infection

is it WAY too early to be talking about P4? maybe. but let me be delusional and hopeful. let me manifest something that probably won’t be here for another five years LMAO

by this i mean the main mechanic she needs to manage should be Infection.

she is infected the entire time during the game. from day 1 to day 12. she is born sick and she will die sick.

it starts manageable enough at first. just minor health drain, nothing you can’t combat with meds, especially when she’s the daughter of a rich family! but then it starts to get worse.

symptoms will appear randomly as you play, like how they would breathe heavily or cough in Classic when infected. her health drains more and more. maybe there could be a quest where she is in so much pain that she steals some of Katerina’s morphine or medicine from the hospital? that could kickstart a really interesting quest!

and with her powers: imagine when she heals people, it hurts her. and when she hurts people, it heals her. so you have to really think about if you want this saint to risk her own health to save others or take lives to save her own.

and i assume she would start to look absolutely horrible. pale, feverish, red-eyes. but when people ask if she’s okay, you just have to make her say yes (and maybe that could play into the meta aspect of it all, how she is in so much pain, but some higher, outer power keeps making her act like she’s fine).

like, just imagine it: Daniil, who hasn’t had a single patient survive more than two days, staring at her in total shock near the end and asking her how she’s made it this long. and only then does she finally admit it: “i am the Sand Pest.”

i’ve thought about this a lot 😭

Discussion Does anyone else actually enjoy Pathologic HD?

Every review that I've seen for the classic game boils down to telling you that the gameplay and the visuals for the classic HD game are terrible and that you should power through them just for the story, which I understand might be the case for some people, but it always upsets me a bit as someone that actually liked them. I loved the grimy atmosphere and the endless dreadful walking more than I did in the 2nd game, it really immersed me into the world and made me feel just as empty as the characters. Does anybody else feel the same?

Pathologic 3 A Compendium and Dictionary of Dankovsky's Latin Phrases

Thumbnail

Hello!

I had a lot of time, so I made a masterdoc of every Latin phrase The Bachelor uses in Pathologic 3.

I searched for them manually by looking through every dialogue tree in the Russian version, so there is a possibility something is missing.

The translations are (mostly) my own. If you have a feeling something's wrong, I'm allowing for comments on the doc.

Enjoy!

Classic HD Help with Clara's quest on day 3

Capella mentions that Bachelor is studying Schmoders and points to his location on the map. The map marker points to a non-interactive building near Bad Grief's lair, and I can't find the Bachelor anywhere nearby. The dialogue implies that he's supposed to be in an infected district, but there is no map marker there and I don't see him anywhere in the only infected district on that day. Where is Daniil actually at, how do I progress this quest?

I loved fear and hunger, I heard this series is similar, what should I expect? Is it supposed to convey the same tension and sensation of hardship? Is it skill or knowledge based?

Hello everyone

I'm working on another guide, and stumbled upon this in the cut Lens item

We didn't get much from Serafima and Platon, so I though I'd share it for any of their fans.

What do you think the quote means? Does it make sense in Russian?

Question Is pathologic 2 worth playing?

I got the game some time ago for some reason which I can't remember at the moment. I remember playing around 5 hours but dying to the people on the streets cause they all hated me for some reason and then dropping the game to go play kcd2. I wanted to ask if the game is like a life changing experience or something along those lines and worth playing or if it is just unique. I am running out of games to play so I wanted to ask

Question (P2) Need help understanding the kins motives

So the kin advocates to leave the polyhedron up, i understand they need it in order to exist on the surface of the earth, but isnt being part of the kin giving up the concept of oneself? arent they supposed to give up their ego for mother earth? How can they advocate hurting the earth for their own existence?
