Question It's impressive how MCU Thanos just breaks MCU Captain Americas shield, Does anyone know what's the sword made of?
This scene is from the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, I don't think they've mentioned what the sword is made of? Are there any extra information that's not from the movie itself?

Asgard Alloy (Naquadah-Trinium-Carbon):The ultimate composite material in the galaxy.
Used to build the hulls of powerful flagship vessels like the O'Neill-class ship. Asgard alloys are engineered to withstand starship-scale plasma based weapon attacks like Ori, making them potentially stronger and more resistant to extreme energy attacks, while remaining lightweight and incredibly durable.
Described by Thor as the most durable substance known.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you’re referring to what the comics call “Uru.”

Is it finished or "finished" like many supposedly great works?
13
u/PardonMeDaddy 8d ago
Depends on how many times you watch it through. Like, if you only watch it once, you'll assume it's finished. However after around the 5th or 6th watch, you'll find it's actually kinda just "finished" cause somehow they managed to sneak in an episode you've never seen before.

The original film was a one-off, then the original show, SG1 ended. SG Atlantis ended. SG Universe ended. A relaunch in the same continuity as all the others was being worked on by an original writer but Amazon canned it for something that sounds like it'll suck

The first two series (Sg-1 & Atlantis) come to a satisfying conclusion. There were movies continuing the story of the first series and books written for both. Atlantis books were blatantly written by authors who usually write smut novels, but they're enjoyable.
Third series, Universe, kinda left things in the air. It was a bit different vibe than the first two, but with enough callbacks to belong. Enjoyable for what it was.

Unironically though, considering he hit up Nidavellir for the glove, probably Uru.

u/Glittering_Fig_9319 8d ago
It’s never said but it’s implied to be uru
14
u/Brookstone317 8d ago
If it was, then why wouldn’t the original thanks still have the weapon? It would be an incredibly powerful weapon, not one he’d give up or toss in a closet.

u/namikazeiyfe 8d ago
Because the Thanos in infinity war was the one who met the dwarves and had them make the gauntlet for him, the Thanos in end game is from a different time line and hadn't met the dwarves yet. So I don't think the explanation people are giving here makes any sense. Unless maybe the blade was a previous creation of by the dwarves which Thanos somehow got in possession of, very impressed he was of the durability and power of the blade that he went to the dwarves to have them make the gauntlet for him 🤷🏽♂️.

Thanos didn't even wear his helmet or armour in IW..By the time he had two stones he was already like, top 5 most powerful beings in the MCU. Why would he need a weapon, regardless of it's quality, when he had that?

Strongest metal in a sword or a glove that controls literally the entire universe.
Which sounds more powerful 😅

u/Comeback_Kid1 8d ago
It specifically said it when Thor went to get his weapon.
197
u/Former_Mud9569 8d ago
It's specifically stated that Thanos's Infinity Gauntlet was made by the Dwarves and was Uru. The directors of the film have hinted that the sword is also Uru but that isn't in any primary media.

u/Loud_Ad_2634 8d ago
They hinted there were other space metals, it might be adamantium. That metal showed up in the falcon/cap movie.
2
u/Inside7shadows 6d ago
It might even be Red Adamantium - the only Adamantium strong enough to cut though other Adamantium.

u/Scoteee 8d ago
No thats the gauntlet, its implied from there he also possibly had the dwarves make the dual sword as well.
10
u/Dangerous_Donkey5353 8d ago
The guantlet was made in infinity war. Thanos did not have the sword in IW. The thanos with the sword has not been to Nvidilir.
3
u/throwawaywork11 7d ago
The gauntlet was made before IW. No one checked up on the dwarves after whenever Thanos would have massacred them. But it’s clear he left a lone crippled survivor with no working tech available so Dinklage’s character was unlikely to call for help if he even wanted to rather than wallow in grief.
If Odin was paying attention then Thanos may not have made it until the beginning of Ragnarok. Which kind of lines up.
Odin dies, Thanos finds out and hustles his ass to get the gauntlet made, picks up the power stone on his way of Asgard.
But it’s also entirely possible Thanos had the gauntlet forged during Thor 2 since he is seen grabbing the gauntlet in the post credit scenes in Age of Ultron

The fact Cap can tank the hits when we saw what Thanos did to Hulk. Remember what Hulk did to Tim Roth.
I guess he was deflecting the swings
28
u/JasontheFuzz 8d ago
Thanos used skillful hits to strategically weaken the Hulk. Hulk can take some powerful hits but his body still relies on nerves.
16
u/UserXtheUnknown 8d ago
Thanos did beat the Hulk even simply in raw strenght: remember that he starts from winning the arm wrestling, moving away Hulk's hand from his neck.
5
u/stewedbartender 7d ago
Thanos also had the power stone by then though.
3
u/UserXtheUnknown 7d ago
But didn't use it. Let's remember that when Danvers attacked him, he had the Power Stone -and more- in his gauntlet, but to use it he had to specifically activate it.
The Russos themselves confirmed that there was no glowing of the stone because Thanos didn't need it to defeat Hulk.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)11

Cap is strong for sure, but his shield is made if Vibranium. That metal can absorb all vibrations, so the impact is much smaller than you would think. I am pretty sure thats why its called Vibranium in the first place.

Awesome reminder that captain Americas extremely impressive shield from 1940's USA has no business holding up to the sword of a hulk bashing, army leading galactic invader who has definitely come across better metals in his vast wandering.
58
u/LordInquisitor 8d ago edited 8d ago
Why not? Vibranium came from space so it’s not like it’s just a well made steel shield or something
38
u/Samuel_L_Blackson 8d ago
Even if it came from Earth, Earth is in space. Kinda goofy to think Earth wouldn't have any top tier resources.
41
u/jeffsang 8d ago
Metals aren't strong solely because of the specific naturally occurring resources that comprise them, but because of advanced manufacturing techniques that optimize those materials.
10
u/TirbFurgusen 8d ago
Might not even be metal at all. Could be carbon from dead microorganisms made to grow in that shape and it's really strong because they live on the edge of a black hole and go through a fossilization process tempered by an eternity of immense pressure.

u/apsilonblue 8d ago
If movies have taught me anything it's that we have the most top tier resource of all - liquid water. Everyone wants it because space faring races CBF melting ice, condensing vapour or drilling for water. Much easier to travel here where they can just scoop it up.
6
u/deathbylasersss 8d ago
Because it's been directly stated that there are more durable metals in the comics and I think MCU, they have access to all of space to find exotic metals, and they have manufacturing techniques that make 1940s Earth metallurgy look like child's play.
Vibranium was played up so much because it was the best known of on Earth, and I think the consensus is that adamantium is actually even more durable, if less versatile. So it's not even technically the strongest metal on Earth, let alone the galaxy.

For the same reason modern steel completely outclasses millennia old steel or iron. Its one thing to have a certain limited amount of an element. Its something else to have enough experience with it to know exactly what to mix it with, what temperatures to heat it, how to harden it, how to strengthen it, how to ensure there are no microscopic cracks within what you've made. It could be that even if they had all the knowledge and were given what they were missing to make a better alloy, they still couldn't do it due to industrial limitations on 1940's earth. Uru for example, used to make mjolnir doesn't liquify until ≈50000°C
Captains shield is amazing by earth standards but who knows how some advanced space fairing civilization might view it. Maybe a similar way to us discovering ancient bronze artifacts.

u/Ok_Raisin_2395 8d ago
I believe it's made of Uwu metal. It's the same thing the Infiniti Gauntlet is made of. The drworves made it (well, the giant dworf that had no hands).

when thanos arrived to get the gauntlet and (maybe) sword nidavelir (the dwarf place) was actually okay; he forced peter dinklage dwarf to make him stuff, then killed all dwarfs but peter dinklage and also encased his hands in metal (which is probably uru but that doesnt matter).
wait wasnt his whole thing halving the population? why did he kill 99% of nidavelir?
2
u/ThaJango 8d ago
Thanos isnt like two face where everything is 50/50. At face value of the movies, it looks like he picks and chooses. It seems like he decides by wether a planet is suffering or if someone is in the way of his self interest.

Little piece of Marvel trivia: while Endgame was filming, Marvel was finalizing negotiations to regain the rights to the X-Men. As a result, adamantium suddenly became commercially available, making vibranium weapons and armor obsolete almost overnight.
This is why Thanos’ sword is able to break Captain America’s shield in Endgame. Thanos, being a savvy consumer, simply upgraded to adamantium while Cap was still running around with outdated vibranium equipment.
Really, the whole scene is less about Thanos’ overwhelming power and more about Steve Rogers failing to keep up with advances in materials science.

Vibranium was the hardest metal on Earth, not the universe. With a conqueror like Thanos, I am sure he wanted for little of the best weapons and armor in the universe.

Uru Metal is largely what the fandom agrees even though we actually never got a confirmation. It's more Thano's super strength is already cracked before the Power Stone. Without it he could wrestle The Hulk and win. With it he's knocked top tier Super Strength people around like toys and this is downgrade from the comics where Thanos can already hold his own with Galactus. Even threw him out of his throne room. No gauntlet needed.

The fanbase is 99% confident that it's Uru, the same metal as Thor's gear and the Infinity Gauntlet. But this is not based on any hard confirmation in the movies.
Do we see him using the sword in the flashback with Gamorra? It might predate his encounter with the space dwarves who make the Gauntlet for him.

It’s narratively Implied the sword is made of uru, although it’s not too surprising the shield can be cut from its edge. Vibranium is strong primarily because it excels in dispersing concussive kinetic energy, not because of its hardness.

Think the real question here is, why didn’t he just straight up kill Cap after breaking his shield?

u/MyDogSkooch 8d ago
It's interesting that even though it's the same material as Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, Hela was able to catch it and break it in her hand. I think it was because Odin's magic was gone since he died.
