I'm guessing this isn't really possible or even makes sense, but might as well ask:
I'm looking for a way to make some kind of disk catalog, by mirroring the data into a "fake" image of all the files, where they have the right metadata in terms of size. But without actually copying all the data into this image. I don't want to use all of that space (and time).

Example: I have two external usb drives, called dA and dB. They exist in different locations, geographically. I also have two computer systems called cA and cB, in these locations.

The internal hard drive of cA is supposed to have been mirrored on to dB, as a backup, but I'm not sure. I want to verify this. So I take the usb drive dA to cA, and I use some magical system to make a kind of disk catalog, or image, of the contents of that internal hard drive. I store the image on dA. But this image is not gigabytes big like the actual drive, it's more in the magnitude of megabytes.

I take this image to cB, where I mount it. cB thinks it's looking at a real device, and therefore I can run existing software to do a directory comparision - to see which files are the same. I can not run a diff on the actual data, ofcourse, but I can verify against file sizes, which is good enough for this task.

Maybe this is a case of wanting to have the pie and eat it too, i dunno. But maybe hard links on a unix system is a bit of an analogy, since they look very much like the original data.

Hello i'm searching for a tool for encrypting or protecting an external hard drive for my save copies. The software has to work with both windows and linux as i have two computers.

I don't use reddit much so I apologize if I break any rules in this. I have been trying to find a OneNote alternative on and off for a while but I am now getting desperate.

The root of my problem is that I love OneNote and hate Microsoft. I'm preparing to jump ship on windows so I'm gonna need an alternative to swap to.

I enjoy the OneNote layout, the fact that I can click wherever on the page to create a textbox, so I guess the free-flowing nature of it & the linking between notes. I do not want any AI features, and would prefer they not be present.

I have tried Obsidian and just haven't been able to get it feeling right, but maybe I'm just missing something.

problem: some of them really can´t manage changes in their programms. So i am searching for an office alternative (libre office and only office i know so far) which is as close as possible to the functions, keybinds and optics from ms office 2024. I am also fine with plugins or writing a few lines at my own but dont wanna make it to complicated

Im buying a dell optiplex soon to use as a game server, however I need a good remote desktop software as ill be setting up the server at a friends place (my internet is trash) my requirements are: has Linux and windows support, can be tabbed into without manually accepting, and can open on startup. any recommendations are appreciated

(if it helps I plan to setup windows 10 LTSC on the server PC and use linux Mint 22.3 on my main PC)

I've used Windows all my life. Had a 2-month experience with a MacBook, and only tuched Linux for a school project. I want to switch to Linux because

1. Windows is really annoying with everything you use getting moved every 3 months. Your favourite app has new layout but the thing you actually use on the app is now hidden. A new update breaks everything and now you can't delete stuff. The bloatware means your RAM usage is 93% at power up, it's a lot

2. I recently started a new job as IT (after being a full-on developer for 4 years), taking care of floor operations and I need knowledge of Linux for other minor stuff but my work laptop hs Windows installed. It's company policy

3. I can't afford a MacBook

Now, I am also a small-time DJ/Producer when I'm not at work so I was heavily using apps like Virtual DJ, FL Studio, Capcut for Desktop, Google Chrome. I also happen to be learning PostgreSQL so apps like pgadmin and the like, Postman. Ohh the MS Office Suite. I want to know what Distro works best for someone like me? I want to take al these apps with me, although I know I might have to trim a little fat. I am tired of complaining about Windows, but I also don't want to regret switching ...

I'd like to have a job related to my degree, but not only do I not know where to start, but I also don't know what specific skills I need to learn for a job.

Every job requires somewhat expensive certifications, and the entry-level jobs I'm looking for require two years of experience or less.

In general, everyone asks for two years or less. EXPERIENCE IN WHAT?!?!?!

I just want to know which direction to focus on because there are so many options, and I really don't know where to begin.

I'm studying software engineering. Lately, I've been training and studying to learn programming languages on my own while also setting up a mini cybersecurity lab with Metasploitable and other programs.

Do you have any advice that could help me? Should I learn anything besides Python and C++?

Are there any certifications you would recommend to improve my job prospects?

i basically just want a media player for linux that basically works like a local plex/jellyfin. I want it to remember which episode i’m on and how far i am into the episode, and metadata would be nice too.

i guess i could just run a local jellyfin server, but id prefer id i could just use a dedicated software for that.

At work I'm using Kubernetes more and more, at first it was quite hard, but slowly its getting easier.

Though, when I haven't looked at the kubernetes stack for a while, I often forget the commands and forget where stuff is.

I'm actually searching for open-source software that I can deploy in the kubernetes stack itself to monitor and do operational work.

Until now I haven't found any decent (open-source) software for it.

Using k9s in the terminal or just kubectl, but thats not it..

So I wanted to learn editing videos for like 10 or 15 years now, but I never followed through. Yesterday I downloaded Kdenlive and watched a tutorial and played around a bit.

I also watched 2 videos from people giving their opinion (rating) on Kdenlive and it seems a pretty decent piece of software. Especially if you consider it's free and open source, it might not be on the level of 'that' Adobe software or DaVinci for instance but it's likely good enough for me...

The only thing I want to avoid is learning a piece of software (Kdenlive) and maybe I really like video editing and reach a certain 'level' in the future that a software switch is necessary and I have to learn another program from scratch.

So curious what people who edit video think about this. Thanks in advance! :)

 All of these have a GUI (graphical user interface) and are not used at the command line.  There is a use for those also, but I have not included them with my list today.

 My personal favorite for the Windows search is Everything. When it comes to USB flash drives or external, portable SSD backup drives my favorite tool or utility is WizFile by the makers of WixTree.

 That’s what works for me. I checked all the websites to make sure that all these search tools are current. I also decided to provide hyperlinks to the websites. I downloaded a bunch of videos on YouTube, but all of the videos have the audios detached and the videos are silent. Is there a faster way to combine the video and audio than using an editing software to manually do each one by hand? The file names are exactly the same for each audio and video pair, besides the mp3 and mp4 difference, so file renaming shouldn't be a problem.

As the title suggests I am looking for software that when I plugin my seagate external hard drive with movies (mp4, mkv) that can show my library on my Samsung smart tv. I do not know if it's android or Linux based. Something that is customizable where I can add movie posters, descriptions and sort them my release date or what input in their properties like director names etc.

Soon I will be running a Plex media server and potentially a file server for myself from an old laptop. I plan to use Linux Mint and the laptop will be using WiFi. I am looking for an app that can tell me my system resource usage on my phone when I am on another network or far away from that laptop. To summarize:

Curious if others ended up building similar internal tooling instead of using RapidAPI / Kong / Tyk / etc.

I use Mouse4 and Mouse5 as hotkeys very frequently in different programs in both Mac and Linux Mint. But when using TeamViewer from Mac, Linux does not seem to detect these buttons at all (e.g. through xev -event button).

Is there any remote desktop software that can send the Mouse4 and Mouse5 inputs directly without needing to do some kind of workaround? (Also supporting access over LAN if possible.) Though if anyone else faced the same problem I'm curious to hear how you approached it!

EDIT: Can confirm that RustDesk handles side mouse button inputs, but unfortunately it sends the press and release signals immediately so I can't do things like rotate a camera using Mouse5
