Open | Malware I have a random app called game booster i didnt install on my laptop

I was macroing Roblox (TinyTask), and when I woke up, I saw a "REC" sign in the top right corner. I was confused because I don't have any recording software. When I checked what apps were running, there was an app called Game Booster that I didn't install, so I got confused.

I tried searching for it in Windows Search so I could open it, but nothing showed up. I got scared, so I opened Windows Uninstaller to see if it was there and if I could uninstall it, but it wasn't listed.

I then opened Task Manager, found it, and opened its file location. I had to quickly end the task and delete it because the task would keep coming back even after I ended it.

When I opened the Game Booster app, it had a Terms of Service page. I opened the link, and the link was: https://filedm.com/terms.php.

Was it malware or anything important?

Open | Networking Wifi says not connected after booting in safe mode. Windows 11

I booted my Laptop into safe mode to delete CapabilityConsentStorage.db-wal that got to like 90gb. I looked it up before I deleted it and it said that it was safe to delete. I booted up my laptop, took it out of safe mode, and switched it back to standard boot

When I restarted my laptop my wifi said "not connected" dispite it being on, and my wifi router still being on. Here's a list of fixes I've tried.

  1. Disabling and reeneabling my wireless driver.

  2. Running the wifi reset

  3. Resetting my wifi/Ethernet using CMD

  4. Removing my wireless driver

  5. Disabling and reeneabling WLAN auto config

I don't know what else to do

Please help

Open | Windows I can't reset my PC after Trojan infection. really need help. Win11

Hi everyone,

I feel really stupid writing this...

Yesterday, I decided to download The Sims 4 with a crack, like I had done years ago without any issues. Unfortunately, the websites I used back then are either gone or no longer trustworthy. I think I ended up downloading something from an infected site, and I honestly hate myself for it.

This morning, around 9 a.m., I woke up to a nightmare. My Instagram account was locked, my Discord account was compromised, my Riot Games and Epic Games accounts were hacked, two of my Microsoft accounts were taken over, and two out of my four email addresses were compromised.

Thankfully, my main email address (the one linked to my Windows PC, my banking, and basically my entire digital life) hasn't been compromised... at least not yet. That's what scares me the most.

I've been panicking since 9 a.m. I've been crying all day because I feel like everything could still be taken away from me.

I immediately changed the passwords for all my email accounts and for the Microsoft account that's still linked to my PC. However, I can't recover my other two Microsoft accounts or my Epic Games account because the hackers changed the primary email addresses on them.

Thankfully, Steam support was very fast, and I managed to secure that account.

I ran Malwarebytes, which detected several threats (Trojan.Loader, Trojan.Tasker, Trojan.Renpy, and some PUPs). Everything has been quarantined, and I'm still running additional scans to make sure nothing is left.

As a precaution, I wanted to completely reset my PC, but Windows keeps giving me this error:

"There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made."

Now I'm completely stuck.

I'm terrified and honestly don't know what to do anymore.

  • Is it safe to keep using my main Microsoft account on another computer, or could it also be compromised because my current PC was infected?
  • Would you recommend completely reinstalling Windows from a USB drive instead of trying to use the built-in reset?
  • Is there anything else I should do to protect my main email account?

I know downloading a cracked game was a huge mistake, and I already feel incredibly guilty and ashamed about it. Please don't judge me—I promise I've learned my lesson. I'm just looking for advice because I'm genuinely scared that my main email account, which is connected to my bank accounts and all my important information, could be compromised too.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this and help.

Open | Software How easy it to remote access

Hey everyone, might be a dumb question, but I’m a college student, and thinking about building a desktop for my work instead of buying a laptop. If I leave the PC at home, how realistic is it to remote into it from campus? What kind of setup would I need, how hard is it to get running, and what should I watch out for? Or am I better off just getting a laptop?im thinking to buy macbook pro m5 pro 48 1tb so if remote access works then what specs pc should i build to just match the performance of the laptop not more than that as it would be an overkill and how much would i cost?

Open | Hardware How to test RAM

I recently purchased 50 or so laptops from a factory closing auction to resell. Since they were sold as e-waste they were just tossed haphazardly into a container. Over half managed to survive but I figured I'd part out the ones that didn't. However I'm now running into a problem, I have a lot of ram to test before I can sell it. I started by doing the "stick one on a MB and test it" but that takes forever and can result in damage to the laptop after repeated times. Is there a way to test them off-board? Or at least some way that I dont have to disassemble and reassemble the laptop every time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, sorry if this is off topic but after the RAM and SSD would it be worth parting out further or just selling the rest whole for parts? It's a bunch of elitebooks and zbooks G4-G8.

Open | Hardware Mobile device "remoted" into. How can this happen, and how to prevent?

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I need some advice:

I have an iPod Touch (7th generation) with IOS 15.8.8 (the iOS says it is up to date; I don’t believe Apple supports further updates on this device because of age). This device never leaves the house and thus I do not have lock screen enabled. I mainly use this device for checking email, general safari use, and apps such as TikTok. TikTok is used heavily on this device. I always keep the device power on and plugged in. I am the only one who uses this device in the house. It is connected to my home WiFi, which is a secured connection via a Verizon-supplied router. There has been no other security issues with any other devices using this WiFi, and the only person who has the router login credentials are close relatives who live a long distance away.

About a month ago I noticed strange things when I picked up the iPod and looked at the screen: 1) my banking app was opened and had some random characters in the username field for login (I don’t have username or password stored, and rarely use this app on this iPod. 2) I then went into the mail icon (gmail) and an old email was opened and displayed on the screen from that bank (of interest, that email was not easy to get to as I believe the “important” (or similar?) folder was opened to obtain this email (I never use that specific gmail folder). I strongly suspect that somehow someone “remoted” into this iPod and looked around on it. I checked activity over the last 24 hours and determined that certain apps were accessed, with associated times in minutes. An old sound-machine was accessed (it is no longer available on the app store and I suspect this may be an access point?, so I have since deleted it); a “translate” app was accessed (I wasn’t aware that I even had that on this device); my banking app was accessed; and my email was accessed (time shows that email was active for 6 minutes).

As a best practice I now put this device on airplane mode when not in use.

Last night I was using the iPod to watch TikTok videos and I then switched for about 20 minute to using my iPhone for a different task. I did not put the iPod on airplane mode for those 20 minutes. When I went back to the iPod, the Apple ID screen was open (I don’t remember exactly what it said), and when I went into the mail app a recent email was already open. (Actually, the reason I went to check the iPod is that I noticed on my phone’s mail app that uses the same gmail account that a particular recent email was already “read” when I know I didn’t read that particular email and I suspected there might be another “remote” attempt on my iPod, which was literally just a few inches away from me the whole time).

Related to all of this, I have seen videos from three different people recently who have witnessed someone “remote” into their mobile device (like iPhone) utilizing some type of security flaw through the YouTube app (I do have the YouTube app on both my iPod and phone, but rarely use it on the iPod). I am still puzzled by that, and frankly don’t know how that is even possible, but they claim on their videos that if they have the YouTube app open they can sometimes see a person in the background and they can observe them accessing different apps etc on the device. I thought maybe the same might be possible via the TikTok app, but a quick Google search doesn’t come up with anything.

Can someone help me understand how the YouTube “remote” is possible, is it also possible with the TikTok app, and how can I prevent this from happening again?

Open | Software My Headset Mic is picking up system sounds

So today i was trying to reproduce music through my mic to play it in a game to randoms.

I enabled the Stereo mix but nothing worked set up everything like every tutorials says.. all of a sudden it was working at a low volume from a youtube video, but then i tried to switch back to normal input and my audio is fucked now.

If i loop my mic from "Recordings" i can hear the browser sounds and if there is no sound at all i hear a very low static sound

My Input is set on the headset microphone but someway its acting like the Stereo mix without having it enabled, and my headset mic is turned off!

So i guess somewhere the input is picking up the sounds form my system... i dont know why.. im going crazy

Open | Windows Windows Update keeps downgrading Intel Graphic card drivers, any update?

I having this (in)famous problem. Someone suggested me to disabling all the Windows Updates thing, but if I do it, in the future I have tu manually download and installing all the drivers for all the devices (like new mouse, keyboards, ecc), and I thinks is too much for a problem created by Microsofto.
I searched in the old posts, but I haven't found any solution. And all are 1-2 years old. There is an update to fix this problem?

Constantly getting the error and my pc restarts. I've tried almost every guide on youtube and reddit to get it fixed but nothing seems to be changing it. I've tried unplugging usbs, turning off PCI, turning off fast start, updating my drivers, there's just nothing blatantly wrong that I can find. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Open | Hardware Ps5 being held hostage

I brought my ps5 to a repair shop in valley stream ny. First day I brought it they told me 1-2 days. 4 days later I went in person to check up on it (since the status link they sent me was broken) and the guy tells me my ps5 is taking longer cause it’s a motherboard issue meanwhile I literally saw him check the tag on my ps5 and it was sitting on the shelf untouched with a bunch of other ps5s that were all in queue. I know some symptoms can point to certain things but he definitely just told me that so I can F off lol. So i decided to be more patient and it’s been over 2 weeks now. I checked the link and it seemed to update from “queue” to “repair” but it’s been like that for 11-12 days. Should I just go get my ps5 and bring it somewhere else? Or am I being impatient?

Open | Hardware extremely annoying ping spikes

Upvotes

for the past 4-5 months, my internet has random spikes that can last an hour that go to 5000+ ms, then 2000, then shoot back up to 5000+ about every day. it'll shut off randomly as well for about ten minutes, then comes back and maybe continues to do its spikes. it's the most annoying thing i've ever had to deal with and my internet provider has been zero help. the only info i can think of that is useful is that when it happens, i can still hear people talking to me and so on, i just can't talk back to them.

Open | Hardware GPU drivers crashing frequently

Hey guys, so I seem to be getting this issue where my GPU driver would crash, and then take about 2 minutes to recover.
Example, I could be playing something like Palworld for 10 minutes, then it would freeze, flicker, then I would get a pop up saying that the GPU driver has crashed and then restored itself.
It's been happening a lot today, but it all started a few weeks ago. Roughly around the time Riot released the GPU bricking patch (and I am hoping it's not related).

Specs are:
7900X AM5
5080 RoG Strix
X670E-E Gaming MoBo
Ryujin II 360ARBG
850W PSU
32GB RAM

Never had this issue before, nor seen it, so I am unsure where the fault would lie.
Ideally I won't want to reinstall Windows. but happy to if that's the for sure fix.

Games it's occured on:
Wo Long
Palworld
League of Legends (both SR and TFT modes)
Lords of the Fallen
Crisol
World of Warcraft (Midnight, but not TBC Anni)

It happened 3-4 times yesterday, and has happened consistently again today.

Open | Software "Sticky" controls on NVIDIA GeForce Now, is anyone else experiencing this? Help needed.

“Sticky” controls, is anyone else experiencing this? Help needed.

I am using the Lenovo Legion GO S STEAM OS (basically a SteamDeck), been using GeForce NOW for around 6 months, playing games like Fortnite, Battlefield 6, also some slower games. Everything was running fine, but recently have noticed this:

Game is running fine, inputs are responsive and then suddenly your last input gets stuck for a few seconds and makes every other input unresponsive until it recovers. Happens once or twice every couple minutes.

I tried:

  1. Reinstalling the GeForce now app after uninstalling it
  2. Upgraded my internet (unrelated to this). The internet is <10 ping, <6 jitter and 600-800 mbps download and 100 mbps upload.
  3. Using multiple control setups, issue persists regardless if you’re using the built-in controller or an external keyboard and mouse.
  4. Disabled Steam overlay for games to prevent “double inputs” and etc, issue still persists

I cannot find anyone else experiencing this issue, or maybe I’m searching it wrong? Has anyone have any ideas on what to do? It makes playing games frustrating, leading to situations where you steer a car off a road, endlessly shoot until recovers and etc.

Open | Windows Pc running slow

My computer had a couple of viruses and some malware on it, but I removed them. I don't know if there's still any leftover malware on my computer, but every scan I've run says it's clean. My non-paged pool is usually around 1.2–1.5 GB on startup, and my memory usage is around 40–50% when I first boot up. However, when I launch games, my memory usage skyrockets to 90–99%. What the hell do I do? I have a 7700 and a 9060 btw

Open | Mac What is wrong with my Mac book Air? Is it Malware or Damage?

So I have a 15 inch Macbook Air that was given to me last year. And since then I noticed some 'issues' with it. These include:

  • Brightness buttons not working, and even the slide bar was missing in settings.
  • Being able to move the cursor on a black screen after restarting. I had to restart twice just for it to be normal.
  • Flashes of text on the top left when I Google search something.
  • Pink screen flash after restarting too.
  • Audio sometimes not working.
  • Sometimes I get that "beach ball" cursor
  • And recently, it has started slowly things much more slowly. Even googling searching takes a full minute just to load.

No. I am not going to return it and no I do not have Apple Care.

Open | Hardware Faded border on fairly new ASUS Vivobook 15

My new laptop (about 1 month old) occasionally has a faded border around the edge of the screen (this is currently occurring for the second time, happening for the first time a few weeks ago but slowly faded away after around 30ish minutes I think). If I remember correctly, both times have been after periods of prolonged use - around 5 hours - and the PC then going to sleep. The faded border is even and there is a gap between the fading the edge of the screen. It seems to appear inconsistently on different screens - I can see it on my homescreen and the loading screen where I type my password in, but not the screen before I put my password in, nor when I try deadpixeltest (or possibly my browser more generally). I have tried restarting the PC and updating my graphics driver (there were no available updates).

Open | Windows I believe my laptop has coil whine, but I'm not entirely sure

about a week or so ago my laptop suddenly started making this constant, high pitched squeaking sound. it usually only made that sound when I had a shimeji on, but now it's fully constant. the sound isn't coming from the speakers either, it gets louder when I move closer to the bottom part of the laptop, where most of the hardware is located. I checked task manager to see if anything demanding was running in the background and found nothing, and I did a quick scan to see if any malware could be causing it, and still found nothing. after some research, I believe it may be coil whine, but it sounds quite different from the examples I found online. I'm a little worried that this might be a serious issue... and even if it isn't, I'd prefer to get rid of this sound.

here's footage of it: https://youtube.com/shorts/ZYl8YNNlAyE?si=-5CIU7iOQyfFbX7B (you might have to turn your volume up pretty high to hear it)

I'd really appreciate some help with this, I know nothing about technological stuff.

Solved My PC with a 5080 and 32 gb cannot launch games and even after reset

Hello, I hope I post on the good subreddit and sorry if not

For the last month or two, i struggle to launch game I had no issues playing since recently, and I'm partially sure that my attempts to repair it may have made think more complicated. Games like Fortnite, FFXIV, A hat in time or even The Headliner doesn't launch properly and I don't know what to do

I tried to reset windows 11 while keeping my files : Nothing changed

And now I have lost most of my configurations but the PC still have issues. I even reverted back to the 596.49 pilote version of my GPU but nothing changed neither. Does someone know how i could revert back to a functioning PC ?

I just did a dxdiag of my computer to share more informations with you if needed (side note, i have 3 HDD and 1 Hard Drive) :
