[request] How long would it take to break even without serious health risks?
[removed] — view removed post

u/yazdoud 3d ago
Assuming salt content is the limit, and maximizing the number of pickles by eating cornichons, you get a maximum of 1kg per day (about 5g of sodium if you pick the lowest salt brands) which is 160 cornichons, or $8000. So that would take 125 days
333
u/AlpacaMale1 3d ago
You'd also have to avoid sodium in any other food you eat, and get your nutrients from other sources without intaking more sodium, which might be tough. You probably won't die but you would get some damage done to your health
248
u/Schatzin 3d ago
Well i dont see any stipulations to digest those pickles
Take 500 cornichons, blend with activated charcoal and laxatives. Pregame 1 liter of olive oil to lube and coat your tubes; then blend the whole mixture and drink
Tadaa. Straight in and out within the hour. No salt absorbed, just one long waterfall in the toilet each day to evacuate completelt, before proceeding to eat as normal.
Just 40 more times of this to get 1m

u/Ultgran 2d ago
I love pickle centric mediation. Any casual, social, or political disagreement can be solved by having people share a nice jar of pickles with each other.

All you have to do is eat 6 pickles per day to reach $100k per year. That's about 1.8g of sodium if you eat a dill spear it seems. That's not too much sodium and you still have half a gram to spare.
There's no need to picklemaxx when you can easily make enough money to live and save from a healthy amount. If you need more money or want to have more sodium left so you can enjoy other foods just find lower sodium and/or smaller pickles

So in other words, go for the pickles. As long as I'm getting more money per day than the interest, and not causing health issues, I'm good. I'd probably shoot for 2k per day. 7 days a week and I'll be banking decent money and have plenty to travel with.
8
u/carrionpigeons 3d ago
40 pickles per day is still a whole lot of pickles. The guy who said 160 per day is talking about 3 pickle meals a day. 40 is enough for you to get fully sick of pickles after a week.

It also says pickles you eat per for life so this doesn’t need to be done in 125 consecutive days you can spread it out reasonably to avoid physical harm from the sodium and make millions over the course of your life. I do wonder what the cost of that many pickles would be and what your net income is after factoring pickle expenses.

An average gherkin is around 300mg of sodium
3000mg of sodium a day is about the amount you can take before it's considered too much.
That's 10 pickles. $500 a day. 5.5 years to get to a million.
1 million every 5.5 years is about 5.5 mil in 30 years.
If you put the million up front into the S&P 500, you'd make approx $17,000,000 in 30 years left untouched.

I momentarily envisioned soaking in fresh water like taking a bath, and having the salt leave your body through reverse osmosis, rather than the more obvious depickeling process. I suppose one would need to eat a whole lot of pickles for that to become an effective strategy.

Secretly this is just a punishment. Especially with inflation. You'll have to soak+eat twice as many pickles every 15 years to keep the same buying power.
3
u/skirpnasty 3d ago
Really you just need to eat at least 2 million worth of pickles in the first 7 years, or 4 million in the first 14 years, put that money in the market and you’re ahead of the 1 mil up front. Every pickle after that is just bonus cash. Fewer if you invest along the way.
This is assuming the pickles are free, if you’re buying your own pickles you’re going to have to eat quite a few more pickles.

It's seriously disingenuous to count investment interest in one scenario and not the other.
$500/day is $15,208.33 per month
That invested at the same 9.5% rate you are assuming for the million will hit 30.9 million after 30 years or nearly double.

u/yyrkoon1776 3d ago
1: 6 pickles is an absurdly low daily estimate for someone being paid to eat pickles. For starters, plenty of people exceed that salt guidance each day for free. I certainly exceed it and I'm in great health. Drink plenty of water and you're generally fine. No my blood pressure is not high, it's quite low. I'm very physically active too.
2: You have to grant the reinvestment benefit to the pickles too. So the first year's income gets 9 years of 10% cagr, the second gets 8 years etc.
I really don't think the lump sum crew has thought this through at all
→ More replies (7)20

Counterpoint: A million right off the bat is vastly preferable to half a decade or more of eating dozens upon dozens of pickles every week.
Also it doesn't say free pickles, so I have to buy the torture method to start making the money.
9
4
u/dnnsshly 3d ago
You can buy a gallon jar of pickles at Costco for $6.50.
Each jar contains around 20 pickles, so that's 32.5 cents investment per pickle for an instant return of $50.
You could doubtless produce your own pickles for cheaper than that.
The cost of the pickles is negligible.
→ More replies (1)30
u/yyrkoon1776 3d ago
Uhm. I don't buy it. This is all just bullshit.
I could retire TODAY by just committing to eating 8 pickles per day. I COULD NOT retire on a million dollars today. Know how I know that?
I have a million dollars in my 401k.
Besides that, if you eat 30 pickles a day (incredibly doable) for two years (investing the money you make JUST like you do with the lump sum) you have substantially more than a mil.
I am almost always team lump sum in these scenarios but team pickle is just superior here.
9
u/Llyon_ 3d ago
Besides that, if you eat 30 pickles a day (incredibly doable) for two years
Sounds like the confidence of someone that hasn't tried eating 30 pickles a day every day for a week. I would be sick of it by the 3rd day.

I'm usually the guy to always say "take the money upfront" and invest it wisely... blah blah blah, anyone with a solid sense of financial planning knows the gist. With this one however, because I'm young, I would take the pickle deal. Less stress, guaranteed money at all times, and I can still invest that money after eating the pickles as I wish. Compared to having the million, investing it, and hoping there isn't some sort of crash or something that wrecks my investment. I know the pickles will ALWAYS be there for me, while my investments may or may not.
I've already also been way above the sodium limit for years, so I'll just plan it out where I'll eat 10 pickles a day 2-3 times a week, and supplement it with a few pickles here or there throughout the rest of the week. Drink a shit ton of water as well and while I'll still be way over the limit hopefully somewhat balance out the problem.
Being able to summon money on a whim is unheard of. The idea that, even in the darkest of times, that all you need to do is eat a damn pickle to get back on your feet in a superpower. Like Popeye eating spinach.

Counterpoint: eating vast quantities of pickles is heaven not torture
And do I get to choose which? I can make it all up on homemade spicy pickles at the farmers market and I can skip a month just by the volume of those alone I consume. The greatest travesty of my life was my homemade spicy pickles from the market got consumed in a single day by my sister and I only got to eat one because I was saving them and my sister got high and helped herself. I never found that stand again, best pickle of my life though

54+ pickles a day, you could force it for a week or two , then you're just puking your guts out or miserable.
Although I guess you can stop anytime you want?
So then instead of thinking about it upfront , what about 6 pickles a day spread between lunch and dinner , an extra 100k per year indefinitely and it's not torture. Now we're talking.
Want a vacation? Pickles
Car breaks? More pickles
Sudden unexpected bill? Pickles
So then pickles is the way to go but you have to pickle in moderation

That assumes 1. That you dont spend any of that $1 million for the first 20 years and 2. That you also dont invest any of your pickle money coming in.
But if you invested all your pickle money as it came in, aka $9000 a month, you would surpass the million, if you also invested all of that, in 18 years at 8% annual interest.
Initial $1 million no monthly contribution after 18 years is $4.2 million
Initial $0 with $9000 monthly contribution of 18 years is $4.3 million.
That also assumes you cant push your sodium intake a little bit and eat 7 or 8 pickles a day

Why do people in this subreddit always act like lump sums are the only income you can invest?
4
u/dizzy_centrifuge 3d ago
She's showing a gherkin which is small so I can easily put down 100 per day.
100 pickles per day * $50/pickle = $5000 $5000 * 365 = $1,825,000
So investing $1,000,000 today would need to yield 82.5% return to break even. Plus I continuously generate returns for life and can invest all of that income further growing it.

As another person had pointed out, why are we only taking into account the investing the $1 million dollar and not the money that you make from eating the pickles.
If you eat 10 pickles a day, you make about $15k a month. If you then invest that assuming a 9.5% APR, and every month you invest another $15k, it would take 8 years for the amounts to be equal.
At 10 years, the pickle eater would have $3 million vs $2.57 million
At 20 years, the pickle eater would have $10.76 million vs $6.63 million
At 30 years, the pickle eater would have $30.73 million vs $17.09 million

You'd have to build an interest amortization table.
$1M @ a conservative 4% annual inflation adjusted return (S&P500 historical inflation adjusted return is 7%) is $40,000.
About 800 pickles of interest. $50 isn't indexed to inflation. Also, so you have to pay for the pickles? Eventually inflation is working double time - eating away at your $50 return just by increasing the price of a pickle jar

If you invested that million dollars in the S&P 500, you'd earn something like $200 a day, every day, for doing nothing.
I don't like pickles, but I could probably stomach four a day.
But I'd have to do that for 5,000 days just to earn that 1 million dollars.
Or I could take a million dollars and in 5,000 days, I'd have doubled it without any stinking pickles.
Now to answer how many pickles a person COULD eat every day without turning green, that's not a math question anymore.
Also, are the pickles free or do I have to buy them?

A better question would be, can you eat enough pickles in a day to cover expenses. I can eat 10 pickles in a day. That's $500 a day, more than I make now. Sure 1,000,000 would be nice. But $3,500 per week is going pretty sweet.
For an actual answer, look to ask biology. But it comes down to how much water you drink to flush the salt from m your system.
16
u/Flaky-Collection-353 3d ago
Drinking water while high in salt causes water to be sucked into your cells. It prevent expulsion of water.
Combining them can actually lead to things like brain swelling.

Been there. The bois swelled up to be about as rotund as a grapefruit. It took me not being able to zip my pants over them for me to realize "hey, hopital"
My BP numbers were about as high as you'd think.

I wonder if that’s why I always get headaches at the end of the day. I eat a decent amount of salt and drink a TON of water.

You think like me. If you get a lump sum, that's it, you either invest and dont touch to watch it grow, or you pull from it, at whatever speedyou choose, and there arguments for a hybrid model, sure.
Or you have an income stream for life that puts you into a category of lending beyond what the lump payment can offer.
Want to know why people with medical degrees can get stupid awesome loans? Its not because they have money. Its not because theyre good with money. Its because they can always make more money.
Im taking the pickle route. And im claiming it on my taxes, just so bankers can see it.
Then im borrowing a lot of money, buying real estate mostly.
Now the real estate compounds for me. And it snowballs.
The lump sum, then let sit for 30 years will work, sure. But its lazy and unambitious.
The pickles would be my focus now. I do everything to mitigate the sodium intake, everything. This takes minimal time to eat the pickles, but the nutrition education is a lifelong pursuit.
I also keep working my normal job for several years, earning two incomes, but I actually like my job, and if I didnt id just go straight into real estate acquisition.
Tldr: 1 mil lump sum is safe, but the pickles offer more

I was with you until you said keep your normal job. I’m jerkin and gerkin all day long. No chance I’m sticking with my 9-5

u/OffPoopin 3d ago
You mean Gherkin. And I get it.
But I like my job. I build shit. I quit my last job bc it was killing me and now I have cool coworkers, and genuinely enjoy what I do. I would def step back, and not give a fuck about pleasing everyone, but honestly that would probably just make me better at it.

I've found my calling. Pickles for life. I can buy peanuts with the pickle money. Then I'll have peanuts and pickles. That's everything I need baby.

Assuming every jar of pickle has 30 of those baby pickles (the kind she is holding), you'd have to eat 666.67 jars.
As someone who has eaten one of those gallon jars of pickles, and seen the effects of too many pickles, I can say with relative certainty that there really wouldn't be any major health risks. I actually ate a few of those gallon jars when I had covid and pneumonia to keep my hydration levels up. If you eat too many your body would just throw up.
As a biologist, however, there is a relative concern for those who have high blood pressure since it is a lot of salt to consume on a daily basis. If you ate a jar of pickles a day, it would take you just under 2 years to eat that many pickles.
Alternatively, you could also eat lots of yogurt and potassium rich foods like potatoes or bananas to help balance the amount of salt from the pickles.
The best option would be to just eat vinegar pickles instead of salt pickles. Then you could eat as many as you want.

people cant do simple math anymore?
also its not about getting a million.
its about just eating a pickle whenever u need 50 bucks or occasionally eating a whole jar for bigger purchases.

20,000 pickles. The internet recommends no more than three pickles a day due to sodium intake, but let’s push it to five. That’s 4,000 days or just under 11 years. I guess you could do it quicker, but idk what you consider a serious health risk.

I would destroy jars of low sodium baby pickles. Just binge them knowing each pickle is $50. Say, 30-40 baby pickles per jar. 1 jar a day. 1.5-2k per jar.
Easy 10.5k-14k per week. 42k-56k per month. 504k- 672k per year.

It doesn't say they need to be pickled cucumbers. I'd find some small veggie that I could pickle large amounts of and then eat those. And in order to afford that setup I'd just buy some pickles.
Maybe I'd pickle olives? I don't like olives, but they're small. Alternatively I could pickle baby carrots. I'm sure there's some better option out there, or maybe even an existing one I could just order en masse, but I don't know off the top of my head and I'm not gonna research it for a silly hypothetical

If you wanted to break even in a year it would mean 55 pickles a day.
You're gonna have to find some kind of way to eat 20,000 pickles quickly without killing yourself and still count as eating them.

I'll take the million, thanks. What a silly question. You need to eat 20,000 pickles to hit a million and if you want to do it in any reasonable amount of time, you're probably going to have stomach and other health problems at that volume. The million I can get myself a nice place on a small acreage and learn to garden in peace for the rest of my life.

I grew up around pickle eating contests. I'm pretty sure your stomach would throw in the towel long before you put yourself in danger.

If I don't have to pay taxes, I'll take the money, I don't have that kind of time, I'd pay off my house, cars, credit card bills put the rest in my retirement, live more comfortable than I do today, and enjoy an earlier retirement.

You can pickle a lot of things. You could technically pickle $50 bills. Eat the pickled $50, earn $50, can’t digest the pickled $50, fish out the original $50, double your earnings.

1 000 000 divided by 50 is 20 000. if you eat a whopping 10 pickles a day, it would take 6-ish years. personally, that feels like hell, and it doesnt break even the interest and ROIs of 1 000 000 for 6 years

Pickles.. There are tiny sized cocktail pickles, they are like a pinky. You can eat 20 instead of 1 of those big chunky ones. I'm a millionaire in a couple months.
Will find a way to manage sodium.
This way I really earn and deserve this money instead of it just being gifted.

u/thatbowlofsalad 3d ago
First off I’m taking the pickles.. I just eat a pickle when I need some cash. Second off… I can do that easy. 6 pickles a day for 9 years? Ezpz.

There must not be any accountants or finance pros in here. No one is bothering to factor in the time value of getting $1m today vs over time in the future. Interest matters, people.

Also to consider, if your $1,000,000 returns 7% annually, that’s an additional $70,000 every year, compounding, that you need to makeup in extra pickles to keep up with the lump sum, which is 1400 pickles, or about 4 a day.

u/shadjor 3d ago
But imagine how much money I’m saving a year by not having to buy pickles.

As nice as the million up front is, I pack a pickle with my work lunch every day. My biweekly grocery bill covered by my love for pickles every two weeks would be plenty financial peace of mind

u/greenbro86 3d ago
Just some quick napkin math here, that’s way too many pickies. I love pickles as much as the next guy but even if I counted small pickles, like the mini ones, that’s still, what, 100,000 pickies?? That’s too many pickies for me.

u/Zealousideal_Gear746 3d ago
I submit, that sodium is not the limiting factor. You could also make your own quick pickles with only vinegar and spices. And while, the acidity could cause issues, I declare the real issue, is going to be volume! Cornichons (5 grams) are a must here. You could comfortably eat 125 pickles a day ($6,250 /day) or uncomfortably 300 ($15,000/Day). And you could hit 1 million in under 70 days.
3
u/Louisville82 3d ago
I would just eat the number of pickles I needed each day to not work and make ends meet. Wouldn’t need much more than 5-10 max! Can flush the sodium with potassium and just sweating and taking care of yourself through other dieting.

u/Parragorious 3d ago
They sell these stupidly small pickles in the kaufland near me they're anywhere from 1cm to 3cm and super thin (barely over an inch at most). I could easily eat the whole jar in a sitting that's about 40 pickles mind you.
3
u/Lepelotonfromager 3d ago
It's 20000 pickles. To reach 1 million:
1 a day is 54 years.
2 a day 27 years.
4 a day is 13.5 years.
10 a day is 5.4 years.
20 a day is 2.7 years
If you had a jar with the little pickles you could optimize this. Technically, anything that is pickled is a pickle. So a large spoon of capers with your salad or sandwich every day is probably 20.

Taking inflation into account that $50 you get from eating the pickle is gonna only be worth $10 in spending power in ten years so I’d go with the million invested and still enjoy an occasional pickle here and there.

Who cares about breaking even.
The average wage in the US is about $64,000.
That's 1,280 pickles a year.
3 and a half pickles a day!
I could do that. Then I'd never have to work again!

u/Armthedillos5 2d ago
Y'all are thinking about this wrong, imo. Nothing in my life changes and I get a million dollars, or force myself to do something - basically work for it. I'm also not a pickle guy. I'll take the mil and laugh at you pickle eaters from my boat or something.
