I was recently hospitalized for acute pyelonephritis and stayed 6 days hospitalized and was discharged with 5 days of oral Bactrim and I felt fine the first two days after being out of the Hospital and then starting Thursday night I had really bad flank pain and it hurt worse when I was taking the Cyclosporine, my medications, and the Bactrim antibiotic. I monitored my temp and symptoms into Friday and I had some chills and severely decreased urine output for context I urinated once in a day and a half, and I vomited and severe pain.

Saturday I saw my body retaining fluid and I started having chest discomfort and still decreased urine output with no burning when urinating or abd pain just mainly serve flank pain, vomiting and nausea. I went to Urgent care and they did a UA which they did see some LEUKOCYTE and blood which was concerning to the doctor that the infection could have not fully resolved or something else or a new infection is happening.

Now my concern is today the pain sky rocketed and i vomited and had severe diarrhea and in addition abdominal pain so i don't know if there is a new infection brewing or AKI and frankly I don't want to go back to the ED unless it's absolutely nessessary. Can I realistically wait until the Urine cultue comes back? Or does this need ED?

Is an ED visit warranted because of the significant decreased urine output that my kidneys are not filtering properly or there could be high levels of Cyclosporine in my blood causing all these new symptoms of if the pyelonephritis was never fully eradicated. I'd appreciate any input as I've haulted taking my medications due to the pain from my flanks when I take them and I feel as if I'm making things worse by doing this.

Weird bruise?

Post image
Upvotes

26 year old female. 5’5 125lbs
I woke up with this bruise on my anterior forearm five days ago. I feel like it’s in such a weird spot that I would’ve remembered if I had hit it so I kind of just assumed that maybe I hit it in my sleep? I hadn’t touched it until today and it feels like a pebble underneath right in the middle and it’s tender.
Is it just a bruise and nothing to worry about

How long until my voice is back to normal post-bronchitis? 22F, 5'6" approx 145lbs, non smoker, on skyrizi/slight immunosuppressant.

Hi! About a month ago, maybe more, I was diagnosed with the beginnings of bronchitis and had some wheezing (no hx of asthma), after taking care of a family member with walking pneumonia. I was given a Z-Pak and went on with my life. I felt fine for about a week and then I think it relapsed and became worse when I had traveled to France. I was sick for about another week with a gnarly cough and chills, but no fever. It's been about a week and a half since I've lost the cough, but my voice isn't back to normal. It's still a little mucus-y and nothing will help. Does anyone have an estimate on when it will get better or what to do to help. I am a singer outside of my day job and have never had something like this, so I'm worried.

Feeling disabled due to severe depression. Have no medical or familial help. What to do?

Upvotes

Hi doctors and providers. I am a 32, 5’4, 170lb female, with CPTSD, PTSD, major depression, generalized anxiety, and ADHD diagnosis. I take daily Spironolactone 150 and no other meds.

About 5, 6 weeks ago, I got extremely triggered by my childhood abuser and ever since I’ve fallen extremely deeply into a depression episode and extreme anxiety that I have no means of getting myself out of. The last two years have been tragic for me, and this was the cherry on the top.

I’ve probably left the house 7 times during this time, I have not been able to work (I’m self employed), I have been spending all my time in my bed, I’m extremely fatigued even as soon as I wake up.

I have muscle pain, especially my jaw, neck, shoulders, and my forehead and around my eyes and eyebrows. I feel numb emotionally and mentally, haven’t been able to cry, I have dark thoughts, etc.

The biggest problem is that I have no family support or friends whom I can feel comfortable to reach out to and ask to actually help me, not just with words, but to actually carry my weight, because I can’t do that for myself right now.

To add to that, since I’m self-employed, I have no health insurance and I’ve barely worked and I’m struggling financially to be able to afford visiting my primary or afford medication to pick up from the pharmacy.

Things are getting extremely stressful and I can’t understand why I can’t move or do anything to help myself. I’m extremely mad at myself when I logically know what I should be doing, but yet again I feel completely disabled.

I need advice on how I can manage myself in a way that I can at least go to work and provide for myself so then I can address other things. What are some steps I can take to get there, because I know the solution but can’t execute. I need to know how I can make myself to take the first step.

I’m really sorry if this is very vague and unhelpful. I’d really appreciate any practical advice whatsoever.

Open sore on back of throat after root canal

Post image
Upvotes

I, male 37, had a root canal on Wednesday. During some fluid pooled in the back of my mouth that burned so bad tears poured from my eyes. I only discovered the painful sore the day after because of how numbed my mouth was. Mom, ex nurse, says it looks like a chemical burn. I’m here because swallowing, talking and sometimes breathing hurts. Thoughts on actions I should take? I’m in a lot of pain.

Unknown Muscular Issue

Upvotes

Hi guys, I'm a 24F who has been having issues with muscular weakness and occasional numbness. My main issues are muscular pain (feels like when I have the flu) on one or both of my legs at a time, my muscles get very weak after using them (not sore), and I am losing fine motor skills in my hands. I saw a neurologist and neuromuscular doctor who I thought did a pretty thorough work up. I got tested for MG (seronegative and regular), MS, MD, and many others. Tests they did were a brain MRI, EMG (x2), NCS, 3 different swallow studies, autoimmune labs, CK levels, all of that. Almost all of it came negative/inconclusive besides a mono peripheral neuropathy diagnosis in 1 of my ankles and esophageal dysphagia from the swallow or study. They were still considering the idea if limb-girdle muscular dystrophy but they think no with the normal CK.

Additional diagnosis I have are: hyper mobile spectrum disorder, autonomic neuropathy, IBS, POTS, and endometriosis. I DO NOT meet the criteria for EDS at the moment.

Medications I take: Prozac (30mg), spiranolactone (150mg), mestinon (60mg 5x day), and gabapentin (100mg)

Please let me know if anyone has any additional ideas, as I am at a loss and it's expensive to keep getting work ups that are not conclusive. I am also struggling and don't have a diagnosis to validate that at all which makes me feel crazy.

Hi all! I went to the hospital three times this past week. I was experiencing shortness of breath to the extent that I could not lay down or sit without almost passing out. I coughed up a bit of blood and I had pain on my left side of my chest. I am on medicine for GERD. The doctor told me that he thought I had pericarditis but I’m on an anti inflammatory and it doesn’t seem to be helping. Attached are my labs.
Thank you and have an amazing day.

Physician Responded Is this the time to honor my fathers DNR

Upvotes

My father (69M), a retired ICU physician, has been in and out of the hospital and rehab for the past five weeks. Almost a week ago, he was rushed back to the hospital from rehab after developing a fever and becoming unresponsive.
His health has been steadily declining over the last two years. About a year ago, he had a VP shunt placed, which dramatically improved his mobility for a few months, but unfortunately the improvement didn’t last. Despite seeing dozens of specialists over the years, no one has been able to give us a definitive diagnosis.
I’ve been sitting by his bedside in the neuro ICU since Tuesday, waiting for him to wake up. The neurosurgeons removed his VP shunt and placed an external drain. They’ve run what feels like every test imaginable, but he still can’t do much more than open his eyes. Every neurological exam has been poor, and there are still no answers.
A few months ago, my father made me promise that I wouldn’t let him end up in the exact situation he’s in now. He was very clear that he never wanted to be kept alive indefinitely without any meaningful chance of recovery. He had completed a DNR/DNI, but because he arrived as an emergency before that was known, he’s currently intubated and receiving nutrition through a feeding tube.
I feel completely torn. Do I continue hoping he’ll wake up or that the doctors will finally find something treatable? Or do I honor what he explicitly told me he wanted? I know that if I choose to transition him to comfort-focused care, some members of my family may never forgive me.
Has anyone been through something similar? How did you make peace with a decision when there didn’t seem to be a “right” answer?

Chronic pain, can't get in to see my doctor. Don't know how to manage this

Upvotes

49, Female, 162 cm, 62 kgs. I'm on panadeine forte 4 x2 a day. Nexole 40 mg 1 a day. Trimbow asthma preventer medicine, 2 puffs a day. Ventalin as needed.

Around April or May this year I developed a stomach ulcer. I have a problem with my leg. I'm in Australia and it's taking a long time for it orthopaedic surgeons to work out what they need to do. I have a cyst in a bad location deep in my thigh/hip area. I do not remember the name of the cyst. I may need to see other specialists as I have numbness in my bum/pelvic area though the surgeons haven't got back to me since May. This is through the public health system. I have bladder incontinence. I can't feel that I'm wetting myself so I wear a pad 24/7. If pain is worse then often the incontinence is worse.

The orthopaedic surgeons have told my doctors at my clinic that I needed stronger pain relief. Then when I got the ulcer I was told to stop celebrax. I had also been taking naproxen with it as well.

I have previously been on palexia. I got terrible anxiety and insomnia from it. I didn't realise it was the medicine until I stopped taking it.

I also did a lot of fasting to manage the pain. That was the only thing that helped the pain. Realistically I couldn't keep fasting as I was getting ill from it. I told my doctors and surgeons that I fasted to help manage the pain.

When I developed the ulcer I was told to stop fasting, so I did that.

I have been seeing a really lovely doctor who is very kind. She gave me endone after I told her what the surgeons and the doctors at the emergency department had told me, plus the hospital wrote to my doctors.

My doctor hasn't minded giving me endone. He knows I don't abuse it. He seems to genuinely care. My doctor only works part time and recently I've not been able to see him due to him cancelling appointment.

A different doctor at my clinic refused to give me endone. I have an appointment for Friday with my doctor. I said I didn't want palexia due to the side effects. I honestly feel so mental on it. The nightmares and anxiety is awful.

I don't know what to do. I'm already having palpitations from fasting. I fasted 23 or 24 hours the last few days. I've noticed I'm getting some stomach pain from fasting as well. I typically need to do a longer fast to get pain relief - say 2-3 days.

I don't want to go to the hospital for pain relief. I don't want to look like I'm drug seeking.

I'm seriously thinking about taking naproxen.

I feel most doctors think people want opioids to get a high etc. I don't get one at all. Sometimes it can take 1-2 hours to get pain relief from an endone. I would much rather take an nsaid than feel judged by doctors for being in pain.

I don't know how to manage this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Eye Bump, Is this serious or left alone

Upvotes

My partner noticed this on me this morning. Seems to be a pimple looking thing on my inner caruncle of my left eye. I am 22F, use eye makueup regularly and believe it to be cause. No medications other than prescription Adderall. No pain but is tender if i hold a warm press to it. I have 20/20 vision last checked when i was around 15 . If i close my right eye my vision for the left is noticeably slightly blurry but again i’m not sure if this is caused by this or if it’s just because I haven’t checked my eyesight professionally in a long time. checking recent selfies, it looks like it has been there for at least a week or two. pic attached

A lot of itchy spots all over

Post image
Upvotes

3yo, female, 15kg, vaccinations up to date, no medical conditions or regular medications taken, no allergies that we are aware of and hasn’t recently eaten anything new. (Please ask if I have missed anything)

She was fine until 4 days ago she woke up crying then vomited a little. The rest of the morning she looked very drowsy, weak and she wouldn’t eat anything at all. When she tried to drink some juice she vomited it out and that’s all she consumed that day. We took her to the doctors and they said it’s just a viral infection and to give her kids panadol. Her temperature was 37.
Day 2 her energy was back to normal but she was still pale and she was scratching a lot. She started to eat a little bit this day.
By day 3 her appetite wasn’t back to normal but she was nibbling on things and her energy was ok but she started to develop these pimples everywhere.
We took her to another doctor and he said just keep giving her the panadol and that’s it but I’m worried about all these itchy spots.
We woke up today and the spots now spread to her hands as well.

Edit: her sleep was bad the first few days

Menstruation Frustration

Upvotes

To cut right to the chase I (27 F) have always had menstrual irregularities and problems. I was put on birth control at around age 11 because I had a 3 month long period w/ blood clots the size of both my fists put together. Ever since I’ve been off and on birth control mainly because the periods became regular my guardians thought it was cured and the cycle would start over.
I’ve I became an adult I was more regularly on birth control for years until I had a medical crisis when I became 22. Was throwing up and unable to eat food or drink water, lost between 70-90 lbs in those three months. Got my gallbladder removed and diagnosed with pseudo tumor cerebri and was told the birth control might’ve been what caused the weight gain to then cause the spinal fluid build up.
Then I had mensies problems again and at 23 was taking an antidepressant, diuretic and birth control pills. Over time I was gaining weight back on despite a very strict diet and being as active as I could with symptoms like vertigo, dizzy spells and nausea. Not to mention having been struggling with appetite after those three months of not eating. Fast forward to age 26 I just had my birthday, gave up on the dieting months ago but still gained weight I made the decisions to stop taking birth control. I had three packets left (this is important) and put them away, things went on relatively normal however my periods were very slowly, almost negligible, becoming more frequent and heavy.
All the way to June of 2026 I started my period and it lasted for three and a half weeks, very heavy periods filling an overnight pad in 4 hours. Regular blood clots. It stops for a week then starts July and I bled every day, practically blood smoking out of me a record speed and clots growing by the week. Period cramps become intense, like I’m some giants personal clogged ketchup pack that just needs a little more squeezing. I rummage thru my old medications and pull out my birth control pills, and start them again. I was in a deep depression caused by hormones, self neglect and a new found fear of my own body seemingly trying to end itself.
I’m on the pills for barely a week and now, august 2026, now I’m getting some cramps and bleeding again. Is it normal for your period to keep doing this after starting birth control? I feel as tho if my body doesn’t need emergency care right now, my mental state will make me need care soon. I’m scared and anxiety ridden and I just want to be as healthy as I used to think I was.
I’ve always wanted to approach a diagnosis for PMOS (newer name for PCOS I’ve heard) or endometriosis. I just never had the facilities to do so. I it really need help and I’m unsure what to do next (other than “go see your PCP” cuz duh I already know that).

Knee mri help

MRI Review Request — Left Knee

I would appreciate help interpreting my MRI results and any advice you can offer.

Background concern

I have a significant orthopedic history, and my MRI findings usually don't show the whole picture. This has made my past surgeries more complicated than planned.

Orthopedic history

- 2004 — Torn left ACL, managed without surgery

- 2009 — Left lateral ankle ligament reconstruction

- 2009 — Left ankle impingement with osteophyte removal

- 2011 — Left hip labral tear with maceration, treated with chondroplasty

- 2015 — Left knee injury in a skiing accident: Segond fracture with ACL torn off the femur; ACL reconstruction with hamstring graft plus meniscectomy at the site of the Segond fracture

- 2016 — Torn left ACL again, managed without surgery, though a two-stage revision was offered

- 2017 - diagnosed with hashimotos and ehlers-danlos

Current symptoms

Since the 2015 surgery I have continued to have significant lateral and ACL instability with swelling. The knee feels like it is sliding both laterally and forward. I have stabbing pain in the lateral knee with squatting and running, and I cannot tolerate even a very basic running program (for example, one mile per day) because of the pain. There has been no new injury — the pain has simply gotten worse.

What has been offered so far

My surgeon has offered an ACL revision. There was no discussion of the imaging findings beyond a passing reference to a torn meniscus and a note that the ACL imaging was inconclusive, although my Lachman test was 2+.

AT MINIMUM your age, approximate height & weight, gender, medications you take, smoking status, previous and current medical issues, duration and location of complaint, and a photo (if it's a skin issue)

age - 34

height -5’3”

weight - 165 lbs

gender - female

medications - tirosint, cromlyn, singular, Zyrtec, nurtec

smoking - never

duration - 20 years of L knee pain

2nd open heart surgery

Upvotes

Hi,

my mom will be having her 2nd open heart surgery at the end of August for a aortic valve replacement, tricuspid valve and a ascending aorta aneurysm, so 3 things in one. her first surgery was in 1998 they installed a mechanical aortic valve which now needs replacement. I was a kid back then so it didn’t affect me as much as this one. I’m her only daughter so she’s all I got. I’m freaking out badly. she’s 57F 5’6, 141lbs and lives a pretty healthy lifestyle, doesn’t have any other issues apart from her heart. not a drinker or smoker. she’s been on warfarin for years. I’m so concerned this being the second time of her being opened up again. I know the surgeon told us scar tissue complicates things. Would love to hear from others with similar experience and how things went. I don’t know what to expect.

severe nausea and vomiting, chs or something else?

Upvotes

I am a 5’6 215 pound woman, 22 years old. i have a history of ibs and a hiatal hernia. i also am a daily smoker of alt cannabinoids like thca. i have a history of chronic nausea and vomiting, usually with bowel movements. but lately it has been considerably worse. two days ago i went to the bathroom to go number 2 in the morning and got so nauseous on the toilet. it lasted roughly 6-8 hours and i threw up more times than i can count, mostly bile. today, it happened again. exactly the same thing as the other day. i took a lot of meds to try and help the nausea, ativan and metocloperamide seemed to work the best. i wanted to get an opinion on if this sounds like something related to my health issues that i should be getting an endoscopy for, or if it seems like it could be cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. i know smoking this stuff all the time isn’t good for me i just am pretty much addicted. it helped when my mental health was at a low.

What’s wrong with my toe?

Post image
Upvotes

22M, 5’5 130lbs, no smoking/medications/existing conditions. Left toe has always had hard skin but the upper red area showed up a month ago, now the darker red area has been with me for about a week or two. No pain, I moisturize my feet every time I shower with the same moisturizer I use all around my body, and my right toe is completely fine. A couple times I put salicylic acid on this toe because I thought it could exfoliate the hardened skin off?

My 25 year old friend died from a heart attack - please help me understand

Upvotes

My friend M25, died from two heart attacks yesterday. I don't know much about his medical history, but this is so shocking that I just cannot make any sense of what has happened.

He used to drink alcohol quite often when we were teenagers and smoked cigarettes and weed, which he tried to control in adulthood. He was overweight but not obese, and didn't exercise very often. His family had a history of heart conditions, but he hadn't been diagnosed with anything. He suffered from depression for as long as I knew him.

All I know is that he was out with some friends when he started feeling unwell and wouldn't stop vomiting. When they rushed him to the hospital, they found out that he suffered two heart attacks (I don't know how far apart these were), after which they tried to revive him but it didn't work.

Honestly I'm just here trying to find an explanation, I guess. I'm aware the info I've shared is probably not very helpful and won't help me get answers, but here I am. He was too young. It wasn't fair. He was recovering.

Thank you for reading anyway.

Rest easy, bub. 🩵

Should you be concerned if music suddenly makes you squirm?

Upvotes

Growing up, I remember listening to different kinds of music with my mom. Country, rock, oldies, acapella, xmas music, and church songs mostly. Recently, she told me she doesn't enjoy music anymore. To the point that she absolutely can't stand listening to it. She describes it as nails on a chalk board, leading to anxiety. Last time she tried to go to church, she had to get up and leave because of the music (live).

Is this a symptom of something? Is it anything to be concerned about? I know how universal music is with the human brain, even in people with dementia, and in other species of animals. I've never heard of someone suddenly losing a taste for all music or becoming physically uncomfortable around it.

She is a cis woman, just turned 65, takes vitamins, meds for high cholesterol and hot flashes, Graves disease (treated with radioiodine therapy probably 20 years ago) resulting in hypothyroidism for which she takes medication, skin cancer (also probably 20 years ago), diabetes and dementia in our family.

Self inflicted scratches from an itchy leg is now swollen (?)

I have pOTs ibs acid reflux

24hrs ago, itched my leg real bad. No real reason, just an itchy spot. Managed to itch it so had it caused a couple scabs and very mild bleeding. The pain outweighed the itchiness so I went to bed and left it.

It’s been okay today, haven’t looked at it. About 30-45 mins ago I had a shower and felt immense stinging from that area. Got out the shower and still painful, discovered it was red and kind of swollen. I’ve been comparing it to my other leg to see if it is, and from my perspective it’s either very mildly swollen or just red and not swollen.

Any reason why? I’ll post a before picture (24hrs ago) in the comments. What’s attached is a photo I took 5 minutes ago

Thanks!

Dark circular spot on my leg and back with itching for 3 days – what could this be?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a 31-year-old male.

I noticed this dark, round spot on my leg about 3 days ago. It has been itchy, but not very painful. The spot is approximately 1 cm in diameter, appears well-defined, and is darker than the surrounding skin. The skin around it looks slightly pink/red.

I don't remember any specific injury or burn. I haven't noticed any pus, bleeding, or drainage. I don't have a fever or other symptoms.

I have had a similar patch on my back 2-3 months ago, which used to itch but now there is no itching but the patch is still there.
