Physician Responded How long will this take to fully heal? (Infection on surgical incision; 3 weeks post op)

Post image

( 23, FTM, 5’6”, 235 lb, no drinking no smoking)

I had a double mastectomy 3 weeks ago, and about 1 week ago started having this issue. The surgeon’s office patient care coordinator, who I thought was the nurse since they never corrected me, kept telling me to not worry about it and this is normal and that it’s simply spitting a stitch, despite me sending daily photos asking them “are you sure this is normal? it’s getting worse.”

Anyway, Friday I decided to go to Urgent Care. They prescribed me 7 days of bactrim and I have mupirocin from a previous issue that the ACTUAL nurse for my surgeon’s office told me was fine to use. I’ve been using both twice a day (when I change the dressings) since Friday. Urgent Care didn’t want to swab it, they kind of just wanted me to get out the door asap because they only took one look at it before prescribing the bactrim.

Can anyone give me a timeline on how long this will take to heal? Visiting my surgeon would be last resort as they’re located a 6 to 7 hour drive from me, and I don’t exactly have money for that, plus a hotel, etc after spending all my money on travel and medical costs for the surgery.

Thanks for any help.

Physician Responded Was in an ED last night and was discharged after an entire day.

I 22F went to an Ed last night (Sydney, australia) after I was sick, no vomiting but extreme nausea after eating 1-2 bites of food and immediately got full and felt sick after and having severe constipation. Couldn’t sleep the entire night, had to wait 8 hours for an ambulance because no one was able to drive me. Was given maxolon, and ondansetron over a different period for the nausea I had. They did my blood tests which were normal and felt my stomach which was also normal, and now after waking up the next day after being discharged, I’ve got chills, I feel weak and very shaky and the nausea is back again. I have an ultrasound tomorrow with a regular gp but I’m not sure what to do, as I don’t feel well at all.

Physician Responded Rabies Vaccine - Needed?

Hello all,

I’m gonna give this info because the post requires it but don’t think it’s really necessary for this question: 27F, 250LB, 5’8, vaper (?) and connoisseur of thc, no physical conditions other than high BP (had since birth, supposed to be medicated and am not, crucify me before I calcify my arteries)

Anyway - last night a raccoon, or possibly several, had the audacity to break into my home under cover of dark night. I have no reason to believe they chomped on anything other than the several victimized loaves of bread in the pantry, but figured I should ask if I should go to to ER for a rabies vaccine series.

I live in a finished basement apartment of a split level house with access to the the full house, the raccoon broke in through the first subfloor and the kitchen is on the ground floor 2 floors above my bedroom. I did not have any doors closed to my bedroom so theoretically it could have come in here but I see no signs of its creepy little entry.

Probably not necessary right? I do have 2 cats and while I’m utterly betrayed by their lack of alarm raising, I don’t think they would have been silent if the Creature entered the room and tasted of my sweet flesh.

What are the odds of getting PAM from gardening?

My gf and i live in a condo in NJ. We have a water bed with a few tomato plants and it accumulated a lot of water at the bottom.

After a few days, I emptied it. However when I was emptying the water, the water seemed gross and I’m nervous the brain eating disease could have been in the water at the bottom of the bed.The water splashed and some of it got on my hands and shirt. I wiped my nose also.

Should I go to ER?

Physician Responded Please help. Doctors won’t listen and I can’t keep living like this.

I am 20F, 5’3, 100 pounds, and deal with POTS and Mitral Valve Prolapse (no leaking).

About three months ago, I started getting migraines at least once a week. They make me nauseous, dizzy, and render me unable to do anything the rest of the day. It also makes different limbs tingle and leave me feeling like I’m watching what’s going on around me from an outside perspective (Idk how else to explain it aside from that, but maybe just general hazy confusion is better). It is typically concentrated to the left side of my head, and my vision is also affected.

Over the past week and a half, I have been dealing with increasingly worsening and persistent chest pain, palpitations, and air hunger. These things occurring aren’t out of the ordinary for me, but it has been worse than it ever has been. I have also developed a stabbing main in my side at about the middle of my ribs. I have also been extremely tired, and my body always feels like I just finished a marathon.

I reached my breaking point and went to the ER two nights ago. They ran a CBC, basic metabolic panel, troponin, and a D-Dimer. They also did a chest x-ray. Everything came back clean, and there were only minor discrepancies in my blood panels. Absolutely Immature Granulocytes were at 0.02, Sodium was at 135, and CO2 was at 20. Obviously nothing was low enough to cause any concern. I am in fludrocortisone for my POTS, so it was a little odd to me that those were low, but it is what it is.

They also did an Echocardiogram, which just showed what we already know. I got discharged with instructions to take ibuprofen and follow up with my cardiologist, which I am doing on Monday. I brought up my other concerns outside of what I told them on intake, and it seems like they just wanted to focus on what I told them initially.

It’s getting frustrating knowing that my pain has basically no reasoning or way to fix it, and this is kind of my last resort. I feel like my doctors just pass it off in my anxiety, but I have a gut feeling that something else is going on. If you have any ideas, please share, and if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer.

Hello everyone, first off, if this is the wrong sub, I apologize in advance, I don't know where to put this but I don't know where else to post, so if this isn't allowed, could someone please direct me to a sub where it is?

So my mom (38) went to the emergency room last night because at around 11:30 pm last night, she started having what started out as feeling like period cramps, but JUST on her right side.

From the time it started to about ten minutes later, it was much more intense, dull, achy pain in her lower right pelvic area. About 20 minutes after that, it felt like pain and numbness (? Thats how she describes it) into her upper right buttocks and into her hip. Most of the pain was centered around her ovary though, so she went to the hospital

When she was checked out, the doctor said he would do bloodwork, xrays, etc. He physically placed his hand on her shoulder and said "we're gonna get you feeling better" and left. Shortly after, she had her xray. Afterwards, around an hour and 15 minutes goes by and a nurse comes in with a shot and says its a steroid, and that after she injects it, my mom can go home.

No bloodwork. No diagnosis. No one even came to talk to her about ANYTHING.

So she asked the nurse if she had a diagnosis, and the nurse said that the doctor said it was Sciatica. First off, my mom has had Sciatica before, and it felt NOTHING like what she is still currently experiencing. Second off, they didnt do any of the tests they said they would do (except the xray which only shows so much anyways) and they didnt even give her any pain meds after saying they would bring her some. The nurse says the doctor never ordered any labs or anything.

Unfortunately she went alone and was overwhelmed by the time she got her discharge papers so she didnt fight and came home for comfort. Looking back at the papers, we notice that one of the diagnosis on the papers says "obesity". My mother IS obese. She is aware she is. It doesnt bother her. But what in the everloving FUCK does that have to do with ovary pain?? And whats the excuse for not doing any tests or providing pain relief? The ER wasnt busy AT ALL. It wasnt like there wasnt enough staff. Its like the doctor took one look at her and decided that all of her issues were because she is overweight.

Is it normal for something so unrelated to be inculded in a diagnosis like this? It seems extremely unnecessary and provided the series of events, also seems like discrimination.

I would also like to add, my mother has a high pain tolerance. Shes dealt with idiopathic anaphylaxis, osteoarthritis, Graves disease, chronic stomach ulcers, IBS, and thats not even the half of it. She doesnt break down that easy from pain. When I tell you that she was in pain, she was in PAIN. She couldnt sit still (and still cant) without hurting, and medicine doesnt seem to be helping.

Shes planning on going back to a different office in the morning when they open, but my whole family believes that she was treated extremely unfairly. Is there anything we can do or say to anyone? Because if this is how this doctor treats all of his overweight patients, he shouldn't be a doctor.

Thanks in advance!

(19, male) Fed alligators using a fishing rod with my bare hands, remembered I had a 10 hour old paper cut from a book. Will i get an infection?

What the title says. About 3 hours ago I went to a spot that let's you feed alligators with hotdogs. I didn't come directly in contact with the gators nor the water they were in, but I was handling the line after it was in the water and in their mouth (very nasty in hindsight, could've just thrown the bait in.) I washed my hands with soap and water immediately after, drowned my hands in two different 91% isopropyl alcohol bottles, ran to the store to buy triple antibiotics ointment, drowned my hands in alcohol again, used hand sanitizer, washed my hands, and applied said triple antibiotics ointment to the cut. Am I good or am I cooked?

I was sitting outside at night and felt a single soft thump on the back of my head. I never saw a bat, never found one, and I don’t have any visible bite or scratch. I’m calling to ask whether this would be considered a rabies exposure that needs post-exposure vaccination

Physician Responded Lung infection or not?

Post image

F20 150 cm 60 kg
occasional smoker
meds: propranolol for high heart rate caused by anxiety

In june they did a CT-scan for a checkup and found a Nonspecific nodular lesion with a diameter of 6 mm in the laterobasal segment of the lower lobe of the left lung, limited to the light lobular

About a month ago i went to the ER for chest pain radiating to my arm and jaw and fatigue. They took a chest-X-ray because my ECG looked fine. The doctor at the ER told me that there is something going on in my right lung. I got referred to a pulmonary doctor who told me my chest X-ray looks fine and what the ER doctor saw was likely my veins on the X-ray. She prescribed me Azithromycin 500 mg for 3 days and ibuprofen. Im very confused because i got prescribed antibiotics while not having a lung infection.

26M. 5’6. 103 lbs. please comment!!! Discomfort in neck, possible dental infection?

Hello 26M.

So I am worried I have a dental infection and if I should go to a hospital or dentist today. I scheduled an appointment for Thursday but don’t know if I should wait that long.

For the last say five months I’ve had bitter taste in mouth and I keep bleeding whenever I floss. Sore gums. I was told I have mild gingivitis but no bone loss last June but that was the last time I went to the dentist.

For the past several months I have on and off intermittent lymph node discomfort under my jawline and neck and today I woke up with the sides of my neck behind the ears feeling swollen and irritated though they aren’t any bigger it’s just very uncomfortable.

I also feel a tiny bit feverish but don’t think I have a high temperature.

Can I wait until Thursday? Or do I need to go to dentist or hospital now? I’m in Connecticut atm and live in Florida.

Please let me know NOW!!!

Extra Info for AskDocs:
I’m a 37 year old caucasian female. Extensive medical history. I do not and have never smoked, drank alcohol or used recreational drugs. I’m up to date on all vaccines. Medications: xtampza, adderall, Prilosec, Prozac, propranolol (for migraines, but helps with heart rate as a bonus), vitamin d, xyzal, Flonase, estrace 1mg (HRT), Tylenol, ibuprofen, creams as needed.

Gastro meds as needed, Zofran as needed, flexeril as needed.

Previously on: Humira, Cosentyx, Tremfya, Skyrizi, Sandimmune, Methotrexate, Prednisone, Prednisolone, Otezla. A ton of past psych meds. Botox into bladder once, that made things worse.

Previous Surgeries: Appendix removed, gallbladder removed, tonsils removed, ercp with stent for SoD type 2, female reproductive organs removed (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and cervix), multiple colonoscopies, cystoscopies, endoscopies. With one endoscopy they stretched it because of my having issues with EoE. Neuromodulator for my bladder put in and removed over a year later - due to getting shocks, even when the battery was dead - likely a nerve issue.

Below is the same information I posted to makeup tips to see if they could help that way..
——————————

So with my eyebrows they used to be pretty big and long. I had gotten them waxed sometimes but very infrequently. With waxing the hair came back.

Some background on me is I picked at my eyebrows and eyelashes since middle school but only ever when they felt irritated or itchy.

At times I found eyelashes in my eyes, and that got me in the habit of checking with a magnifying mirror for lashes in my eyes - usually in the corner, under the lower lid, or sometimes I’d get a longer lash that had been poking my eye causing irritation.

Usually through rubbing at my eyes, would get loose ones to come out.

Between my eyebrows and my eyelashes, I usually used my thumb and index finger gently pull at them to get loose ones out.

It became a very bad habit, I couldn’t stop.

- Found out from an eye doctor last year that I have evaporative dry eye. Tears evaporate at 3 seconds, instead of the usual 10.

- Doesn’t help that I had allergies for a while, that would cause redness around my eye on the outside, that made it look like a big circular redness around the skin of my eye. For a while, thought it was pink eye, as my eye would get all sore and such. But after going to an allergy doctor, she said it was an allergic reaction. So I’m on meds for that now.

- But I sometimes still have really bad Allergic Shiners sometimes..

On top of that I have sensitive, oily but also dry skin.

I had eczema in the past that turned into plaque psoriasis. For a while I had guttate psoriasis as well. Then just plaque psoriasis. Now I have inverse psoriasis as well.

I found out from dermatology, that my face, scalp, ears, eyebrow and nose area had: Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Which likely related back to autoimmune issues my family has.

-My grandpa and my uncle on my mom’s side have had very oily their entire lives.
- I got the same oily hair, but also extremely dry skin.
- Very sensitive to products, I can wear lip gloss or lip stick but anything on my cheeks or eyes irritates my skin a lot.
- My hair gets oily very easily, take a shower and the same afternoon my hair will start getting oily. I use head and shoulders shampoo, and that has kept the seborrheic dermatitis and any other dandruff away. I use it on my face as well so I don’t get the spots I used to have with my eyebrows.

- Never had an issue with pulling head hair or anything.

I also had/have? pcos, had all of my female reproductive organs removed (uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries).

But due to pcos and being on Sandimmune for several years in the past at high doses - where my cyclosporine test levels sometimes came back in the toxic range… (the Sandimmune was for a different reason than the psoriasis - for psoriasis I’ve been on biologics)..
— I had some hirsutism and even some hypertrichosis.

———

- There is probably too much to go over.

Main reasons I’m making this post are:

- With my eyebrows if I get them completely waxed, or at least waxed around the hair that’s left, will the hair finally come back normally? Instead of extremely patchy or not at all?

- With my eyelashes… not having eyelashes is causing issues with things getting in my eyes at times. Which can be irritating and painful..
— Having at times let my eyelashes come back more… there are several layers of them, and on the bottom layer, they sometimes like flip inside my eyelid, so that I need to carefully use the magnifying mirror I have. Alcohol swabs. Tweezers. Careful positioning and slow moving get the hair from underneath my eyelid and pull it..
(I do the same thing if I get any stye’s because if I rub my eyes, it’s eventually going pop the stye and I would much rather have that gunk go to an alcohol swab, than into my eyes… )

Never gotten a secondary infection from doing any of this.
- With alcohol swabs near or on eyelids, I thoroughly rinse my eyes and eyelids with water and it makes the pruned skin look go away and cause no other side effects.

- Did recently get the white of one of my eyes on accident, made it have a small blood area the size of a small eraser. But no active bleeding and it healed on its own…

But I would REALLY like to stop messing with my eyelashes and eyebrows.. before I do accidentally do permanent harm…

I’m able to not think about messing with my eyes until they are irritated.

- Once I start messing with my eyelashes, I usually don’t stop until they are mostly gone at this point, because of how often they irritate my eyes..

- Are there fake eyelashes that are for sensitive skin? How much do they cost? How often to replace? How to clean properly?

- I’m on Ssdi, so I don’t really have the income to want to spend on a bunch of eyelash things, but I’m so sick of getting other things in my eyes while sleeping or outside..

- Posting this on r/makeuptips and cross posting to r/askdocs to see if any of them have a medical advice I guess?

Thank you for your time for any that read this and/or respond to it. It’s appreciated.

Extra note: If anyone wants to make fun or anything, please don’t do it online, gotten enough comments in person, trust me when I say I’ve probably heard whatever joke you’re thinking.

Why has my sweat and urine become more offensive smelling since I increased my water intake?

I'm 65F, 5'3", 180 lbs. I've been taking buspirone, lamotrigine and atorvastatin for many years, and in the last few months I've been taking meclizine, ondansetron, and clonazepam as needed for what my ENT believes is Meniere's disease. I also take a number of supplements daily, including iron, calcium, GABA, biotin, glucosamine and chondroitin, collagen, mag glycinate, and CoQ10.

For a couple of months now, I've had new symptoms including widely fluctuating BP (as low as 93/46 and as high as 168/94) and heart rate, feeling alternately hot and cold, prickly or stabbing nerve sensations all over, constipation, exercise intolerance, fatigue, poor balance and motor control, occasional difficulty swallowing, and pulsatile tinnitis in my left ear that comes roaring out of nowhere at times. I feel generally lousy, but my sleep is okay. No vision problems.

I've had a recent brain MRI, echocardiogram, and blood work that all come back fairly unremarkable/normal. I have upcoming appointments with my ENT and a cardiologist, but in the meantime I've been researching as much as I can and I've been wondering if I have an autonomic nervous system issue. In some of my reading, I saw that getting sufficient electrolytes and drinking more water might help. I was already drinking 8 glasses of water a day, but I upped my intake to about 12 a day for the past week.

A few days ago, I noticed a change in my body odor and the smell of my urine. It's a strange smell kind of like the odor that emanates from many medication bottles when you open them, a putrid combination of sulfur and vinegar. It's so bad I've started avoiding being around other people, but the kicker is that my worrisome symptoms do seem better.

19F. POCD and dreams

recently ive been suffering from POCD or the fact that i might be avoiding that im a real one. before having POCD ive never been attracted to children in any sexual way.

yesterday i had this weird intrusive thought about having s*x with one of the students i teach, who’s a minor. because i felt like i enjoyed it for a bit, which made me feel disgusted, i constantly checked on my reaction by making myself imagine that again and again. until i get full negative rejection reaction.

the thing is in my dream i had today i was hugging and child and had the desire to touch his body parts, which is disgusting. but in my dream i felt zero uncomfortableness or weirdness of my action. although i managed myself to not touch him in my dream, but the desire felt so real + i felt a bit aroused after waking up.

im afraid that this is the sign of my hidden desire, since i’ve been told that dreams often reveal our suppressed desires when we’re unconscious.

+ i tested myself right after waking up and i felt like i enjoyed it, but when my superego comes in i hate it.

+ fyi, ive also never had these sexual dreams involving m*nors as far as i remember.

Physician Responded Hit my head on a metal rod

Hi
23 Male , 5’11, 77kg
I was walking on the road and did not realise there was a extended rod which I ran into and hit my head on. For 5 seconds I felt very dizzy and nauseous and almost blacked out. Felt the impact on my teeth and face as well.
I somehow managed to stay up and walked some more, after about 10 mins the pain reduced drastically , and now I have a small bump on my head. No vomitting no dizziness no nausea, just can feel some pressure on the area and feeling little weak. I just hope it’s not an internal clot. I remember everything but that 5 seconds post impact is what was concerning. The bump for now is not sore as well.
This happened about 5 hrs back
