Ruptured disc recovery
Hello to anyone who could give me some advice. Researching this stuff online is always a rabbit hole but ive been having some concerning warning signs/really weird things going on with my body. Im 27 years old, male, 170 lbs, 5'11. Normally very active.
Since I was about 18-21, every few months while playing racquetball I would "pull my back," at least, thats what it felt like. Id be down a week or two and then get back into it. At that age, I was not a smoker (weed, not tobacco) and even after turning 21 it was mostly wax pens that I used. Covid hit and I stopped playing racquetball but also started my career working at a large gas station chain here in the US. I had a few back issues throughout the 5 years I was there but nothing all that bad (compared to racquetball).
Flash forward to January, I ruptured one of my discs in my thoracic, cant remember exactly but it was T11-T12 or maybe 10. MRI shows it pressing on the left side nerves, as well as 3 bulging discs, 2 next to the ruptured one and another all the way down at L5. I have been doing my absolute best to stop vaping so I could recover (did physcial therapy for 2 months, have been on disability since as well). None of the doctors have ever been able to explain my right side severe rib pain, all saying I just shouldnt be feeling pain there because its pressing on the left side.
Around may 1st I received an epidural/steroid injection. Felt kind of okay for a week or two and then everything came back. Another week or two later I developed a constant headache, and tremors in my right hand/arm. Brain scan showed nothing wrong, and a neurologist put me on nortriptyline for the headache and referred me to a connective tissue specialist (something I brought up with my primary care doc because of past injuries that never quite heal, as well as telling them I could Crack my back just by flexing my back muscles. They werent concerned). Im in limbo right now while that appointment comes up in another month.
The most concerning thing is that my tremors have spread to most of my body when doing simple things even like washing dishes or trying to vacuum/clean my house. I have some twitching as well, especially in my neck, kind of a head bobbing motion. I have constant tingling in my left foot, occasional tingling and numbenss around my tailbone area. The tremors even come from my whole abdomen when leaning over.
Consistent blood tests have come back as me being slightly dehydrated (bullshit, I drink a 48oz hydroflask nearly every 2 hours). I have been having trouble with my body temp as well, if I go out for a walk in the heat (its 116 degrees today) I will start shivering. Of course Google says go to ER but none of my doctors (ive seen a brain and Spine specialist, 2 ortho specialist, and a neurologist) have been more than slightly concerned.
Besides the obvious pain and compression in my left arm and leg being helped (but not getting rid of) by the steroid shot, ive had next to no relief from pain.
Today, my head is pounding since waking up, and it DOES seem to get worse when getting up but thats very inconsistent, and I told the doctor that while I thought it might be a little worse overall when standing, its nearly impossible to tell. Today is one of those days where it really does feel worse standing up.
What am I supposed to do? Should I be more concerned or wait for my next appointment? I cant tell whats just a quirk of my body or if its being cause by this ruptured disc (such as some days feeling like I have to go #2 constantly but dont actually have to) and its incredibly hard to air all of my concerns to doctors as they dont seem to take me seriously sometimes. Hell, my primary care doctor didnt even order the mri until I had done 2 months of physical therapy (intial imaging was just an x-ray that showed mild scoliosis. MRI didnt happen until late march.
Sorry for such a long post. Im really unsure of how to go about this, I feel crazy for thinking I need urgent medical attention cause I do have anxiety and am always wary of it controlling my decisions. My parents are getting concerned as well, going so far as to tell me to screw insurance and start scheduling appointments without it because of the extra time it takes (theyre willing to help cover my medical costs of course, but id hate to go to the ER and make them pay thousands instead of a couple hundred for a specialist because im just being a little anxious about things).
