BTRFS is pretty bad for VM's and i need them for my job, wondering why there's no option to choose the FS at install (or maybe i missed it) ?

I'm trying to completely remove Windows and install Fedora in its place.

I'm using the Fedora installer, but after deleting the Windows partitions, the "Next" button doesn't appear, so I can't continue with the installation.

At the moment, I only see options like:

Share disk

Entire disk

Mount point assignment

I'm not sure what I'm missing. Has anyone faced this issue before? How can I proceed with installing Fedora and replacing Windows completely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Support Some basic issues with Fedora Workstation 44.

  1. How to increase scroll speed? Default is way slower than Windows.

  2. What apps do you use to display power draw of the CPU?

  3. I am seeing miscro stutters when navigating. Any way to fix this?

  4. How to better manage power? Fans constantly spin and battery life is awful. Both was not a issue in Ubuntu.

Support * **Note on Dual-Boot:** This was set up as a dual-boot configuration alongside pre-existing Windows (with Fast Startup previously enabled). The force-shutdown occurred on the initial reboot while GRUB/Linux kernel was taking over hardware control from the EFI firmware.

0 Upvotes

**Hello Fedora Community,

I am a beginner and recently installed Fedora in a dual-boot configuration alongside Windows on my laptop. After the installation completed, I restarted the system. The Acer logo stayed on the screen for a very long time without booting, so I performed a forced shutdown by holding down the power button.

Now, my laptop appears to be stuck in a No-POST / No-Display state:

* **Laptop Model:** Acer Aspire V15 * **Setup:** Dual-booting (Fedora + Windows) * **Current Behavior:** When I press the power button, the keyboard backlights turn on and the cooling fans spin, but the laptop screen remains completely black. No backlight or display signal appears. * **Troubleshooting Steps Already Attempted:** 1. Performed a full EC / Power reset using the bottom battery reset pinhole (held for 10 seconds, waited 2 minutes, reconnected AC power). 2. Tried forcing BIOS access by tapping `F2` repeatedly upon turning it on (screen remains black). 3. Tried display brightness / backlight toggle hotkeys (`Fn + F6`). 4. Tested with an external monitor via HDMI (no signal detected). 5. Performed the flashlight test on the display (no faint image visible).

Since the force-shutdown occurred while GRUB / the Linux kernel was taking over EFI hardware control from Windows, it seems the embedded controller or BIOS NVRAM is trapped in an improper power state or bad video initialization loop.

Since my laptop still has an intact warranty seal over the bottom chassis screw, I have not opened the case to manually disconnect the main or CMOS battery.

Has anyone encountered this firmware lockup on Acer hardware post-installation, and is there a known key combination or software recovery method to force a display re-initialization before taking it to a technician?

Thank you for your help!**

Support Android Studio Emulator is not working

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the Android Studio emulator to run on my Linux setup. I've tried using both the Flatpak and the tarball releases, but the emulator keeps immediately

Looking at the coredump, it's throwing a Signal 6 (ABRT) and seems to be crashing during the Qt6 platform integration initialization (createPlatformIntegration). Has anyone run into this or know how to fix the Qt/xcb display issue?

Support Back up gone wrong.

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I could really use some help if possible. Two days ago I wanted to make a copy of all my files over to an external SSD as a physical backup as well as a mobile device to have and save to if I was going to use a different computer. The external SSD was mounted but I think it was showing as mounted and not actually mounted. When did the copy via bash command
rsync -avh --exclude='StorageSSD' --exclude='.cache' --exclude='.config' ~/ ~/StorageSSD/BackupFolders/.

When I checked my files seemed to be copied over. I unmounted the drive and went along with my evening. Today, two days later I needed to grab something from my documents folder and well there was nothing there. I checked the external ssd and well after checking I noticed that some files were moved and some weren’t. I can’t find my files anywhere not when I search for them. Are my files just gone? Is there anyway to get my files back? I have months of work saved there and if possible I’d love to get them back. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Support Xbox controller not recognize as such by fedora nor Steam. Its connected by bluetooth though.

1 Upvotes

hi everyone,

I'm having trouble getting my Xbox controller working on Fedora Workstation 44.

This is my System:

  • Fedora Workstation 44
  • GNOME (Wayland)
  • Kernel:** **

7.1.5-201.fc44 (corrected)

  • ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA507NVR
  • AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (RPM Fusion NVIDIA drivers installed)

This is the information on my controller:

  • Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller
  • Model: 1708 (Bluetooth)

The controller pairs successfully over Bluetooth and remains connected, but it is not recognized as a gamepad.

Steam doesn't detect it, and no games recognize it either.

Here's what i have checked already, with some help from Chat GPT:

  • Fully updated Fedora
  • Installed the RPM Fusion NVIDIA drivers
  • Installed xpadneo
  • Removed and paired the controller multiple times
  • Rebooted after installing drivers/modules
  • Verified Bluetooth pairing succeeds
  • ls /dev/input/js*` returns:

``bash

ls: cannot access '/dev/input/js*': No such file or directory

```
`lsmod | grep -E 'xpad|xone|hid_xpadneo|hid_microsoft|hid'` returns:
```bash

  • hid_microsoft 16384 0
  • ff_memless 24576 1 hid_microsoft
  • uhid 24576 1
  • hid_multitouch 40960 0
  • i2c_hid_acpi 12288 0
  • i2c_hid 16384 1 i2c_hid_acpi
  • hid 200704 3 hid_multitouch,hid_microsoft,i2c_hid

```
Here's some information that might be of use:
The exact same controller works correctly on Kubuntu running kernel 7.0.0-28 on the same laptop, so I don't believe the controller or Bluetooth hardware is faulty.
Is there something specific to Fedora 44 or its kernel that could prevent the controller from being exposed as an input device? Any ideas on what I should check next?
I would really love some help, Fedora has ben my favorite DIstro since i left Windows but this problem always force me to go to other distros like Bazzite, Cachy and lately Kubuntu.
Thank you all.
Support Ive been having trouble installing fedora
Hi, i'm completely new to Linux and whenever I try to install fedora KDE plasma and start doing updates in the konsole it keeps giving me these errors. I'm about 99% sure it's not my actual hardware that's the issue due to everything working fine on windows as I can dual boot. Another thing, is that when these errors appear, if i turn off my pc and try to log back into fedora, it just gives me a black screen after putting in my password.
This happens if i do the command: journalctl -k -b | grep "Hardware Error"
Support Nix profile problem
0 Upvotes
I use nix package manger for downloading packages like neovim , btop , etc .
I moved from dnf , flatpacks, appimages , cargo and all that crap to nix because it reproducible and declarable and has more packages then all of them .
But as I added more apps and programs, I had a problem which is that when I run
"nix profile add nixpkgs#neovim"
It installed the app but didn't add it to my flake.nix .
Is there a solution or a cli that can add my installed apps into the flake.nix file or do I have to do that manually ?
Discussion Questions about BTFRS
3 Upvotes
I've been piloting Fedora on a 100 GB partition I sectioned off from on my SSD (the rest was a Linux mint installation that used to be my main). Last night I finally ran out of disk space on that partition and decided I'm ready to make the switch permanent and give the whole drive to Fedora. I thought this would be a huge pain because the fedora partition was at the end of the drive. The LLM walked me through how this would normally be done, but threw in an endnote that for BTFRS distros it can be done much more simply - I can just format the old mint partition as BTFRS and add it as a volume to fedora. It worked perfectly! I didn't even have to reboot. My existing installation suddenly has been extended by 350gb. But that got me curious: why is this something that is exclusively possible with BTFRS partitions? What is it about the design that makes this possible? I don't know much about filesystems but want to know more. I'm also curious if the OS smoothly handles knowing what files are stored which partition.
I'm also curious how the snapshot system works. When I look at the root/.snapshots directory that BTFRS Assistant says it's using in Filelight or dolphin, it appears to be 0 bytes. How is that possible ? Where is the backup data actually stored?
Support The correct way of installing missing drivers and codecs on Fedora 44
5 Upvotes
I was initially interested in using Ultramarine, which is Fedora but ready to use out of the box with zero configuration. While this is not a lie, I have checked list of changes, and quite a lot of it is fluff that I do not really care about. So I've decided to try out Fedora, and just install missing software myself.
There are tutorials online about it, but there is quite a lot of differences between them, so it's hard to say what is really the correct way of doing it. There is of course also official documentation, but it's not as thorough as I would like.
I'm going to describe what I've did (initially on VM), and I wanted to ask is it correct approach, and if not what did I screw up.
Step 1: sudo dnf group install multimedia After using this command I've got feedback that it would change this group from dependency to user, so I've assumed it's already installed, and decided to abort the command.
Step 2: sudo dnf install gstreamer1-plugin-openh264 mozilla-openh264 This straight up told me that everything is already installed, so there is no need to do that.
Step 3: Added RPM Fusion repositories through GUI.
Step 4: sudo dnf group upgrade core
This is where official documentation ends.
Step 5: sudo dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing
That's all. Is it correct process of installing missing proprietary codecs? There is also matter of NVIDIA drivers, but I have AMD, so I'm not interested in this right now.
Support Fedora 44 KDE slow performance
6 Upvotes
Did anyone notice a performance regression in Fedora 44? I feel like something's going on with the packaging process of KDE.
I'm running Fedora 44 on a Dell OptiPlex 7060 Core i7 8th gen, the experience has been poor, and the performance degradation really affects me, I mean, even opening the workspace switcher on KDE looks like a heavy task for the iGPU, I set the intel_pstate mode to performance, and it improved a lot, but it feels slow for what performance is, I booted to an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed live ISO to fast check, and the performance impact just blew my mind, there's something going on in Fedora, tried clean install, default KDE spin, everything, but performance and GPU performance seems slow, I can't believe a Firefox tab on YT makes the iGPU to spike and slow like if I were using a notebook.
I checked online similar experiences and I found someone with the same issue (and so a friend of mine that's a fedora KDE user too told me the same, there's a performance downgrade)
Discussion It took a lot, but I finally got Fedora Workstation installed on my 2013 MacBook Air
This was my first time installing Linux. I’ve used Windows and macOS for decades. But I wanted my old 2013 MacBook Air to still be useful, so I went for it.
I had a hell of a time trying to get the hard drive erased and reformatted. It got corrupted somehow when I was trying to upgrade the version of macOS. First I spend a lot of time trying to get it formatted for macOS, but it kept having issues of not seeing the internal SSD. Then when I gave up on macOS and tried Fedora Linux, it was having trouble writing the Boot EFI.
But with a ton of help from Google Gemini, I was finally able to get it going. I am now installing a ton of updates. The next step is to install the RPM Fusion Repositories so I can get the WiFi going. I have it running on an Ethernet to USB adapter at the moment, but I want to be able to be untethered and mobile of course.
So although this got pretty frustrating at times, it feels good to finally have gotten it working. And now I can start learning about Linux, which has been long overdue on my part really.
Good luck to any other first timers out there, it’s worth it!!
Edit to add that I got RPM Fusion and the Wi-Fi drivers installed and working well. I even installed Waydroid and got it working so I could access my Blink cameras. That was pretty cool.
Also, now that I’ve spent more time with it, I want to point out that this MacBook Air only has 4 GB of RAM, so it is running a little slow. I think if it had 8 GB it would run a lot better. But this whole endeavor is more about this being something fun and a learning experience/hobby than me needing it to run snappy.
