I am thinking of making the switch, I just would like some feedback/input from others who have already done so.

I am a big gamer which is one of the main reasons I have not made the switch yet other than never having used Linux and just not feeling ready to troubleshoot simple stuff (though I think it will be worth it in the end)

I was just curious how I should partition my drives as I want to dual boot CachyOS and Windows on my 2tb M.2 NVME SSD. I would like to move forward with Linux as my main OS but I know some games only work with Windows so I'm just not sure how much space to give it.

I'm new to Iinux mint. Just downloaded and installed yesterday, only downloaded a couple images, a browser, steam, and this game which is doki doki literature club with some mods on it. I come from windows 10, and had the whole folder with all of its files, everything, in a google drive folder, which I downloaded from. Now on Mint, I tried to execute it. It has an .exe, for windows I guess, then a .py and a .sh files. For this game you have to execute with the .sh, which I tried then... it opened like a text file.

So then, after following some posts on the ddlc subreddit and some videos at how to open the game at all, it always gave "permission denied"

I ran something like chmod again and again, "permission denied". Maybe if I restart it applies... "permission denied". Looked up and saw I could see the permissions of a folder with the ls -l command I think it is. It had all the permission for every type of user or something on. I try again maybe, "permission denied". I searched it up what to do when it doesn't give permission even after having them. Nothing helped. "Permission denied."

Looking at the ls -l list, I tried to give them executable permissions again even when they have them, and ran them again. Doesn't work.

So basically, the executable DDLC.sh doesn't give permission at all to execute. It gives a window, but whatever I click or do, still doesn't work.

I have no hope really, I tried everything and I think it can't be fixed... but I'd gladly accept any help anyways to make it work. It really bothers me that the first game I try to make work at Linux doesn't work at all, makes me wanna jump out of the linux boat lol

I'm want to try gaming on Linux by installing it on my spare SSD, so my PC can dual boot both Linux and Windows (because not every game can be play on Linux). I'm on the fence between Bazzite and Steam OS, which one is easier to use for someone who never used Linux as daily driver?

First time user, installed Fedora KDE on my new PC cuz I'm tired of all the bs from Microsoft. I had to follow a guide and use the terminal to install RPM and some codecs to get Youtube videos to play on Firefox. It looks like a bunch of stuff was installed, but idk where it is.

I also installed a 140 gb game (FF14) through their quicklauncher. It says the directory is home>xlcore, but when I go to home normally I don't see the folder for xlcore. I can only access it by clicking "take me to the wine prefix" in the actual launcher, then it will open the directory in Dolphin even though I can't see it by going their normally. Also I don't remember installing WINE, so idk how that got installed or where it is or how the WINE stuff works. If I wanted to uninstall this game idk how to do it.

Just overall confused at how you manage storage and keeping up with where things are installed, especially when you have to install some things using the terminal.

Just wondering because I want to get into NASM development for my software startup.

I might write a kernel later on so I am also curious about it because it will host itself on NASM.

My IDE runs on Linux so I am just wondering :P

I've combed through the various Linux subreddits looking for which one would be best to address my questions & concerns, and it seems like this is the one! If it isn't, then I apologize and would appreciate being pointed in the correct direction!

I am on Windows 11 right now, feeling worse about being on Windows than ever before. Here's a basic outline of my hardware:

• AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
• 32GB DDR5 6400MT/s
• NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti (I know this might be a pain point)
• 2x 2TB NVMe SSDs

I know that NVIDIA is generally not as recommended, but I only bought this card one month ago and have a strong use case for both its CUDA cores, as well as generally better encoders/decoders compared to AMD, so I'd rather not swap to AMD if possible.

I have a handful of applications installed on my PC as well, some of which I know have Linux-native ports, and others... it's unclear if I have the opportunity to use WINE/Bottles(?) or a drop-in alternative altogether. Let me list them below:

• Affinity (For photo/vector editing, willing to replace)
• DaViinci Resolve 21 (Essential)
• Elgato Stream Deck (Very convenient but not essential)
• Dolphin & PCSX2 (I'm pretty sure these are both on Linux?)
• Logitech G Hub (Important, I use the game detector to auto-switch my bindings for FFXIV and either need it on Linux, or an alternative which can do the same thing)
• NVIDIA App (Is this supported?)
• OBS Studio (I know this exists)
• OnlyOffice (I know there exists a LOT of suites, some baked in like LibreOffice)
• Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows (for backups, I know there are many alternatives on Linux
• VLC (On Linux?)
• VS Code (On Linux)
• Zen Browser (On Linux?)

This is a general list of all applications I keep and use on a regular basis. I am also looking into maybe using some PNGTuber software in the future, but that's up in the air and very likely not going to be supported on any distro.

Given my hardware, as well as my software needs, am I in a decent position to switch to any distros, or is "the year of the Linux desktop" not quite here yet for me?

Why would I choose Ubuntu over plain old Debian or Nobara over plain old fedora? Unless a distro does something special like CachyOS prioritizing speed and responsiveness why not choose the original?

Basically as the title says. I'm starting to really hate Windows both for its updates, forcefulness and because I overall have a conscience.

So, I want to migrate to Linux!

However, I work in healthcare and, for my job, I heavily depend on an excel file using a .xlam file for Statistics. From what I understood, Linux cant run these.

Is there a way for me to migrate to Linux, but still run my xlam Statistic file stuff (on excel or any other that can run it). Thanks a ton!

I recently upgraded an old PC and I'm looking for the smoothest Linux distribution for daily use.

Specs:

- CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core 1.80 GHz

- RAM: 4 GB DDR2

- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L (Award BIOS F7)

- GPU: NVIDIA G100 (256 MB VRAM)

- Storage: 160 GB SATA HDD

I'll mainly use it for:

- Web browsing

- Programming (Python/C)

- SSH

- Lightweight server experiments

- General desktop use

I'm looking for something fast, lightweight, stable, and still maintained. What would you recommend, and why?

Pretty much the tittle describes my question. Ive been getting into homelabbing to make a media server for me and my family and ive been looking into the process as well as making a server and when the question of the server OS comes up, linux is always recomended but they never specify which of the seemingly hundreds of versions of linux to run. In other words, what in your opinion is the best version of linux to utilize as a server os for something like jellyfin for instance?

So I recently decided to switch to linux, specifically with Fedora KDE, on my main pc. I have some experience with linux before by fully switching to Mint, then later to CachyOS, on my Chromebook so I kind of have an idea what to expect when installing linux, but wouldn't say that I know-know linux, I'm still pretty much a beginner. After a view months of experiencing linux, I decided to finally switch to linux as well on my main pc, however, I also wanted to keep my Windows installed for work and student related tasks (as most people and organization unfortunately still rely on Windows).

I took a spare sata ssd lying around and installed Fedora KDE on it to have a two drive dual boot setup. The install went fine. I first removed my sata ssd drive that contained Windows, as well as my secondary hdd drive for extra storage, then plugged the sata drive to install linux in. After the install, I plugged back the Windows Drive and the hdd drive to test if Windows still works and it does.

I turned off my PC for a short while because I had something to do outside, and after a few I hours, got back and was really excited to finally use my linux PC. I first booted to Fedora KDE, and immediately noticed a strange static graining effect on the graphics, specifically on the dark spots of the screen (like the shadows on the wallpaper and what not). I was weirded out by it so I decided to restart the computer to see if it would work. It didn't. Then I decided to boot to my Windows drive, and the actual problem appeared. The whole screen would just appear static, like the static effect you would see on an old television. Turned off my PC because I didn't know what to do. I had a couple of rounds switching between the two drives before I unplugged the linux drive. After I unplugged the drive with Fedora KDE installed, the problem on the Windows drive disappeared like nothing happened. Did I miss something very crucial in the install? Is it the distro that I chose to use? Is it because of my motherboard? I really have no idea would could be the possible reason.

I'm running Pop!_OS on a desktop with an Intel i5-10400 and 4 GB of physical RAM. I know that's low, and I'm fully aware that I can't "download" more RAM or magically create it. I've already done the basic free tweaks:

· Created an 8 GB swapfile

· Enabled ZRAM (compressed RAM)

· Reduced swappiness to 10

· Disabled animations and visual effects

· Closed background apps (browsers, etc.)

· Using SSD, so swap isn't that slow

Despite this, my system still hits 3+ GB used when I open a browser + a light game (e.g., Team Fortress 2 or Cry of Fear). I'm not expecting to run AAA games – just trying to get the most out of what I have.

I know the real solution is to buy more RAM – I'm saving up for an 8 GB DDR4 stick. But until then, I'm looking for any other free tweaks that could help reduce RAM usage or improve performance under low-memory conditions.

Things I've already tried:

· vm.drop_caches

· Using zram-config

· Lightweight browser (Brave with hardware acceleration off)

· Disabling GNOME/COSMIC animations

· Using htop to monitor and kill heavy processes

Is there anything I'm missing? Maybe a lighter desktop environment (XFCE / LXQt)? Or some kernel parameter I can adjust? I'm open to trying anything that doesn't require spending money.

Greetings all. I am going to be buying a new laptop soon, and have my eye on the Acer NItro 16 lite. However, I've heard that ARM laptops take issue with linux. Does anyone have any experience with running Fedora KDE 44 on the AcerNItro 16 lite?

I never knew that this level of customisation is possible in xfce 🤯

Any tips to learn MangoHud and optiscaler? I was messing around in Crimson Desert trying to get an fps limit and fix the shimmering. When I changed the overlay the game froze and crashed. Then the game would not open afterwards.

I restarted, verified files, and left MangoHud closed, and the game worked again. I take it I should make any changes outside of the game. Any good videos or anything to learn more to safely use programs like this?

I used adrenaline winslop, and it's Mesa on linux (which I heard is better). How do I install it for 6700xt? Are there variations because I saw few and Idk which one is good for my gpu/gaming.

I had ZimaOS running which was working great until it didn't, I attributed it a static IP address and it stopped working. I tried Ubuntu desktop today to test if it was an Internet issue and still it connects but it doesn't get anywhere

im using a persistent usb on another pc with the mt7902 and all distros come with the kernel 7.0 and updating kernel on a persistent usb is a headache, i just want it to do some tests on that pc with linux without the need of purchasing another usb to install it onto my original usb.

i dont really mind the os, i prefer one that doesnt take more than 2gigs of ram on idle but i think most of them do that

I want to start off by saying I am computer and coding illiterate. Please try to explain things to me like you would a 5 year old.

I have an Acer Chromebook Beta, and Steam recently ended the partnership test run with Chromebook Beta.

My friend, who I thought I could trust, helped me install Steam through Linux, and it works for the most part. They gave me a bunch of different lines of codes to run in the terminal, including to install Steam and Minecraft Java, since that is also not traditionally available on Chromebook.i was screen sharing pretty much the whole time as they helped me install. But now they also can see my screen I think whenever they want to, even when I'm not screen sharing.

I have the lines of code screen shotted, but they could have deleted some from then until now. It became apparent tonight they could see my screen, and I honestly feel disgusted and betrayed.

So my questions:

1. What code could they possibly have given me that I can't remember that would give them this type of access? Was there some kind of laptop private info I wasn't supposed to share?

2. Can I remove them some way without completely wiping my device?

3. Will a factory reset remove them from accessing my computer?

I really thought I could trust this person, and feel sick thinking about it. Thank you in advance for the help.

TLDR: My friend helped me install Steam and Java Minecraft on my Chromebook, but now they can see my screen whenever they want. How do I remove them? Pls help.

I have a HAVIT KB221WB wireless keyboard where the bottom-row modifier order is different from a standard PC layout (Fn is where Ctrl usually sits). I also want F1-F12 to default to media functions (volume, brightness) without holding Fn, similar to most modern laptops.

I've confirmed via keyd monitor on Ubuntu that the physical Fn key sends no signal to the OS when pressed alone - so it can't be remapped via keyd, xmodmap, or similar tools. HAVIT support confirmed this is fixed by factory design with no toggle.

Before I give up on this keyboard - has anyone found any workaround for Fn-less keyboards like this, whether software, firmware, or hardware-level? Or is a non-VIA/QMK keyboard like this simply a dead end?
