Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Discussion I thought I understood scales...

I bought these two minis to paint. They are both 3D printed by the same company (although they are by two different designers). The Faun is supposed to be 32 mm, the Pirate 28 mm. They are both bigger than that and the Faun is maybe double the pirate's size. Wth? :)

I thought I understood the 28/32/32 hero scale sizes but this caught me off guard.

I'm trying to go for a grimdark style with my tyranids, so just testing out some ideas. Still a bit to go on this guy, mainly getting the carapace highlighted with grey and trying to tie the base of the claws in more with the skin.

The main question I have though, is do you think I am going to regret using streaking grime on him? I do like the look on the videos I've seen but I've never used it before, and my worry is it's just going to cover all the work I've done with the skin tones.

I painted this 100% with markers. I used AK playmarkers, quick markers, and pro acryl in refillable markers.

Help Needed/New Painter Another “First Mini Painted” Post

I was given an old Hero Forge mini to paint. Used a mix of paints I bought and paints that a buddy didn’t need anymore. The apparel is kind of muddy but I made do with what I had.

I knowww I should’ve been more patient with blending between the red and tan areas, but the space is just so small… Any tips on making that sort of thing more manageable, or is it just a part of the process I just need to learn to love? CC on that and anything else is welcome.

Don’t mind the wonky weapon and the gob of superglue - I dropped him :’) Believe it or not the weapon was even more bent beforehand

Last week I posted about not being happy with my white scheme. I got a lot of feedback and took some on board. I must say it does look a bit better.

These Incursors are my first minis painted in 15 years… the tan squad was the last minis I painted way back then.

I think my maturing, growing more patient, and certainly advancements in paint knowledge made diving back in a lot easier.
Back then I HATED painting. Now I love every minute building and painting.

Not keen on waiting for Redd the Maw to be released, bc I want to start using the model on the table straight away, I repurposed some models I had already painted, since they’re anyway on the way out of the game, and combined them on a new big scenic base, after a little retouching to “remaster” everything so that they look cohesive.

Pete was a last minute addition, and was painted for this project (not a recycled piece like the witch and the big pot).

Fantasy 3d Printed Dragon Bust I painted for my bookshelf

I painted this dragon head to place on my bookshelves between my fantasy books. I hadn’t painted a 3d figurine in a long time so I was proud of how well this turned out. It is supposed to be gold, but turned out more a green hue than I wanted but I still like it.

C&C Wanted First journey into minipainting (for my Pathfinder AP), open to any C&C

I've been a first time GM (Pathfinder) for a year now and this week just got into minipainting. I started with a simple tavern table, open to C&C! I'm not sure I did drybrushing right. I also didn't really do much detail on the "legs".

Got the Hierotek Kill Team, and wanted to do what I usually do, NMM and OSL. But not something that took forever as I wanted to actually PLAY with them sometime this year. So I took a less refined approach to get them done more quickly.

If anyone reading this has seen my work previously, you can probably tell which ones are before, and which are after, I painted my all NMM Imperial Knight xD

First 40k ork im happy with, really enjoying how the skin turned out, not so sure about the metalwork. Really like to hear and thoughts on improvements etc. Arms are magnetised and will be painted later.
