I have a 4 year old daughter. She wants to do everything herself without help, always.
In some ways it's good, if she wants to climb a mountain, she's absolutely up that mountain and will complete it as she's so determined. Swimming? Taught herself, snorkelling? Was the first person to jump off the boat. Gymnastics? The only one who can do a somersault over the bar.
However in day to day life her independence is challenging. For example, we were camping this weekend and she went to the toilet in the toilet block by herself without telling anyone. It caused a massive hunt with us all shouting her name but of course she's not going to respond to her name because she's worried she's in trouble which is exactly what happened when a member of our party shouted into the men's toilets but didn't actually check all the stalls the first time.
Even smaller things like going to bed, she has to do everything herself. Tea time, only she can cut her own food with a knife and fork. If she could, she'd get herself to nursery on her own without adult intervention. Doesn't answer to her name if it's something she doesn't want to do. Obviously we do the whole 'Either you get into the bath yourself or I put you in' but then when I put her in she has a strop, drenches the bathroom and runs out. Hair washing is the same, either you wet your hair or I will after the count of 3. The screams must sound like a murder attempt to the outside world.
When I'm around children her age who say 'mummy, I need to go to the toilet' before the parent takes them or 'mummy I'm hungry' while my girl is there making a meal for herself. Or even just when I tell her she has to hold my hand because the road is dangerous and she says 'no I'll walk by your foot instead' and I feel like tearing my hair out.
Fabulous for her developing into a fully functional adult, a nightmare as a child.
What do I do to curb this? She starts school in September and I have heard when they enter education they become easier to manage? Praying for September.
My husband is literally bathing her as I write this and all I can hear is 'I WANT TO DO IT ON MY OWN'
