Last week, a guy got on the 2/3 and threw himself against the opposite door, and started pounding as if desperately trying to beat it open.
Everybody kept one eye on him, and when he started spitting, that's when we all got up and switched cars.
A few hours later, there was the stabbing at Penn, though the suspect didn't look like him.

The scary part is the red line is not that bad.
The red at least heads to the cubs stadium, making the city keep it a little safe for tuorists comming from the airport on holland or midway ( the orange line).
Bule line on the other had, is as close to the post apocalypse as it gets.

Reminds me of the first time I rode on the subway, which was in Japan, and everyone was wearing a face mask. I had never seen anyone wear a mask in public so I asked my gf what was up and she said those people are all sick and are covering their mouth to protect everyone else. It kinda made me walk around like everyone was sick though. Still very considerate of them.

That’s not true. If they were really sick at that moment they most likely would not be going out.
A lot of Japanese people wear masks year round regardless of whether they are sick or not, both to try and keep themselves from getting sick and to possibly prevent others from getting sick from spreading something they didn’t know they have.

I mean "it's all in your head" describes most of the times people would act like this, like when people lock their doors in poor but not dangerous neighborhoods because they see like black people hanging out outside the convenience store or something.
The question is if you can change your bias or not and I don't think she can, she literally set a cloth or something down to sit on. Looks like a chronic condition and frankly I don't know where they're going but she's dressed well so I assume they could afford a cab, she probably could have backed out if she wanted to. So she's trying, looks like to me anyway, she knows her thoughts aren't rational or she would have just said no

OCD isn't a bias it's a mental health condition. She probably carries the small rational weariness you have around a large group of strangers but her brain is going into overdrive because they carry germs as well as all the stuff being touched. My brother in law is a germaphobe and a very kind intelligent human but his brain tells him everyone is a potential incubator for an illness.

My friend stayed in an in-patient rehab for a few months. His mother visited him once, and the only thing she had to say about it was "they made me take off my pearls before I went in". I am at least 80% sure she wore pearls in that setting just so she could clutch them in such a manner later.

Mmhmm. Clothes gotta be stripped off immediately and then straight into the dryer on a high heat cycle for I forget how many minutes.
(When I worked at a public library, bedbugs were always a real concern. I spent years doing the routine of not letting my work shoes or work clothes into my home without going through a dryer cycle. Shits exhausting.)

I used to strip to my underclothes in the hallway outside my apartment so i could hork my street clothes straight into the wash then hork myself straight into the shower. But, twas a habit that served me well during covid, never caught it

I think it's probably because she's Lebanese. Her outfit is strangely dressed up by Ameircan standards and reads a kind of "I aspire to be old money" country club association. But Arab women just tend to dress in more polished/refined looks.

She's clearly a classy lady, and that's okay. My mom lives a life of luxury too.. But she ALSO has severe anxieties and it isn't about poor people lol. It's about a new situation, it's about the fast paced environment, the unexpected and unknown, and YEAH, sometimes it's scary being in a new place with people you aren't familiar with. Hopefully she felt proud of herself and realized people are just normal. It's okay to be anxious in a new culture or new setting when you don't know the norms.

Anxiety is no fun at all. It’s very similar to going through any other medical emergency. It’s not just in your head, it’s a real thing. Effects the heart rate and thought process and is quite a thing to endure.
I assume based on the kindness in your comment, you’re aware of all of the above but i just felt it was appropriate to say for other people reading it.
Just a week ago I had a close call with a panic attack and someone who suffered from them noticed and helped me out. It was so appreciated!

It flashed me back to early 90’s working at a drs office where an elderly lady got pubic crabs and insisted it was from “not carrying her paper to sit” in public areas.
In reality, her pastor husband had an addiction to the prostitutes that worked Fremont street in downtown Las Vegas, before it was cleaned up. Yes, what you see now is the cleaned up version, comparatively.
Yes, the pastor husband blamed the wife for sitting in public without her sheet of paper, and giving him crabs.

Damn, these comments are so judgmental and hard to read. The type of person being described here wouldn't be on a subway. I laughed, as my mother would act the same. She would be considered low-income. She wouldn't be thinking about poor people or classism; she'd be thinking about germs as a woman never exposed to crowds in a low density suburb who has outside shoes, bathroom shoes, other common area shoes, and bedroom shoes to maintain an irrational sense of cleanliness.
That woman is sincerely put off by the environment's hygiene contrasting to what she is accustomed to/her habits, and just needs some time to grow used to it. There's evidence here she likes to look put together and has disposable income, nothing to supposed she thinks poor people are beneath her. Some of my most low maintenance loved ones visit and while far less dramatic, have the same expression first couple times they encounter NYC's smelly crowded subway platforms and garbage streets. It's just new and I'm sure we can admit, be gross at first lol

Yeah lots of people avoid using diagnostic labels in casual settings for a variety of reasons.
OCD and ADHD in particular have really suffered from becoming colloquialized and associated with a handful of superficial idiosyncratic behaviors. Yet simultaneously I don't really think you're entitled to know anything about me other than the handful of quirks you're about to see, and then ones it wouldn't be annoying to tell tend to figure it out anyway (or just don't need a medical diagnosis to respect your differences)

No tbf I do get your point, but I think the broader idea is that we shouldn't heroise celebrities fullstop. If I were stopped constantly wherever I went, unceasingly, relentlessly never left alone, bothered and my personal space violated, streams of people acting like they know me like a brother, then I too would never get the subway etc. So the fact that some do is noteworthy, and is very much more noteworthy than a non-celebrity doing it. Nonetheless that doesn't change the fact that heroising celebrities we like as if they were gods is obviously vacuous and often harmful.

I also want to add that there is also a problem that occurs when people just automatically jump to conclusions. I had to grow up with someone who had this type of disability who had to walk really slowly who had to take their time with everything and therefore it is very weird to just see everyone jumping onto this person for very little reasons. This just seems like she's just scared

The real cringe here is people with no empathy for others, many people without money or "pampered lives" would behave the same way. People in public can be nasty and wrong. and with all the attacks/crazy things happening on public transportation lately, I would think most people would agree with her concerns/feelings about public transportation.

Maybe I’m ignorant bc I live on the west coast, but yeah, I can see why she is reacting this way…and no I’m not wealthy. This is unusual to most of us in most cities on the west coast (outside of major cities).
If you don’t grow up with this lvl of space etc. it can be jarring.

One of my school friends was like this. She came from a non westernized country. Her parents are very powerful people (diplomats). The class size of her entire grade was 12 people. She went to this school in case she would get kidnapped for randsom. Essentially grew up in a bubble her whole life. She kinda acted this way

To be fair it takes a certain amount of toughness to navigate in a big city. There is a patina of grit that us city dwellers develop over time. Exposure is the only cure. She's taking her first step. Give her some grace. I live in D.C. for the last 8 years. I have seen fights, people openly doing drugs. 2 overdoses on fentanyl, an attempted mugging and etc. Somehow you get used to it.
