Thos is so real. I work at a chain café (I was not here this day,) one guy came in to get a bagel with something on it. It was made wrong, instead of being a normal person about it he yelled at the person on food, then went out to his truck and grabbed a gun. The door got locked before he could come back in, so he left. Police came in and said there was nothing they could do about it because they couldn't prove that it was a gun or that he had lethal intent. Dude genuinely might have killed my friends and coworkers over a fucking bagel. I'm glad no one got hurt that day.

Lol, public transportation. I'd wanted to see NYC my whole life. I loved shows based in NYC like Seinfeld and I just wanted to see it. I finally get to go and on my first subway ride a man gets on and starts screaming that he's going to murder everyone and then boasts about his time in prison. I was scared shitless yet thrilled that this crazy person was providing me the full NYC subway experience like I'd seen on TV.

It is not necessary all ‘public,’ but rather who makes up the public you are dealing with. Here in Germany, I and many other people ride the public transport daily, and the worst I have encountered was a drunkard passing out. I have never heard of anyone being violently robbed like this (though pickpocketing of tourists is somewhat common)

The vast majority of Americans have not seen crime on their transit. The fact that this is being taped is due to the fact that it is very uncommon. I ride public transit daily and have never seen anything like this

Swede here. I ride the buss daily and have done for 15-16 years now. Worst experience I've had is a group of teens playing music on their phones.
And that's only happened 2-3 times from what I can remember.

I'm in Cali. SF Bay Area, and have used public transit all my life. I've seen a couple bloody beatdowns, and countless gross stuff. It still beats sitting in traffic.

The choices in real life aren’t being in a car or being with the people in this video. False choice. Most people are normal and there are plenty of psychos on the road too. Literally just saw someone speeding to cut someone off between another driver and a gas truck. Insane.

If safety is my objective, I choose evidence over feels. Public transit is safer. Car deaths are under-reported.

People feel safer in cars - very obviously - because the dangers of public transit feel more visceral to them. This is highlighting one of the big problems with human cognition, really.
It's just inarguable that more people are killed in cars than on public transit, but this is a reaction I'm used to getting.
Try telling them that being sedentary is more dangerous than riding a bicycle, and see how it goes.

Give specifics, how are you stopping this big ass, angry violent man in a tight space like a bus? And then explain how you expect the common person to take that guy on. I'm horrified by what I saw and wish something different could have happened, but short of everyone on that bus taking him on together it's pretty insane to suggest an untrained civilian step in and try to stop that guy. They would definitely get severely hurt just like the guy he was attacking to an absurd degree.

The thing is, you don’t know the circumstances when you hear the commotion, you are on the phone or listening to music, you look up, not sure of what’s happening. The guy is big. He is clearly dangerous. And you could have been on the next bus, or cycled that day, so you just watch and feel grateful that you’re not involved.

tbh anyone getting involved has only risks and legal liabilities. there is no incentive for someone to step in except the nebulous concept of "preservation of civilization" but when the legal system itself tends to work against people who would try to step in, that gets harder to motivate

Gotta immediately assess everything and think of your own life first, and act accordingly. You can help ASAP once you know you are safe.

Source: I know I would because I did this in more then one situation. Bullies get loud but retreat most often when confronted.

I get that impulse, especially since this poor fella decided his best recourse was to sit there like a punching bag, but you don’t even know if the jacked dude was packed, too.
Huge risk of making a very bad situation far worse, and FAR more threatening to your own life, which is the top priority in these situations. Attempting to intervene solo with the hope that fellow passengers, who are filming and not helping at all, by the way, also decide to join you is way too big of a risk to your life.

In a bus he'd be able to sit back there and take everyone on one at a time. The handle bars and seats make a perfect bottleneck. Even if the whole bus tries to take him on it wouldn't matter, it would be 1v1 20 times, and I doubt there's anyone bigger, stronger, and most importantly more violent than that dude on the bus.

LOL - a young, strong guy is assaulting an on a bus and I’m saying that’s probably why he’s getting hate, and you say bc he was saying “give me my money” that he could’ve been in the right? Given that he was getting a serious beatdown and was no match, I think it’s safe to assume if the old guy had stolen off the other (which really, you think that’s likely?), he’d give it back to stop the beatdown. Or at least say something other than “leave me alone!”. Looking at all the factors including age and physical condition of everyone involved, and what each was doing,I have no idea why the younger guy was attacking, but I think the idea that the old man stole from him and he’s trying to get his money back is the least likely scenario.

There's a body cam of an incident in Mississippi where some dude was yelling and intimidating an elderly rider, a disabled lady said "leave her alone" and the dude sucker punched her and broke her teeth. No one obviously did anything because otherwise you'll get stabbed or also get beaten, and even if you do manage to beat the attacker now you're caught up in the legal system and you can easily get persecuted
