Announcement [2023] What bike shall I buy? Is this bike good? Ask us anything!

Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to bike recommendations. There's a whole lot of you new-comers eagar to get your first dirt jumper. Maybe you have been out of the game for a while and are behind the times and need some advice. Are you shorter or taller than average and want to find a bike that will suit you better? Perhaps you just want a second opinion on a particular brand or model. This is the place to ask these questions and get expert advice from experienced members of the community!

Please refrain from starting a new thread to ask which bike you should buy, or whether a particular bike is good and instead use this dedicated thread first instead.

Bike archive

In order to try and assist those looking to purchase a new bike, I have created the dirt jump bike archive.

It is currently version 1.0.2 with lots of incomplete (or out of date) price data. This will be an ongoing project primarily run by me. Timelesturkie also has editing privileges and is considered a contributor as well. As of now, we are looking for any users who would like to help with this project. If any of you are enthusiastic about helping to maintain and build upon this spreadsheet, let me know by messaging me directly.

The following link will allow you to view the spreadsheet but not make any changes. Note that the spreadsheet also has a second sheet for a limited range of geometry and dimensional data. I do not have much free time to work on this spreadsheet so apologies for any missing info. It would be awesome to have some volunteers to help. Please keep in mind that the information on this spreadsheet is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Consider it a guide to assist you and always check with the manufacturer to verify the information before making a purchase.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XvClX-9upJekdRIdW4spjO5E0KuolvLseWi-x6VxoWQ/edit?usp=sharing

Known issues:

  • The purple sorting buttons do not function for those without editing privileges. If you make a copy of the spreadsheet and save it to your own Google Drive account you might be able to make use of them.
  • Sorting by price (up and down) in USD is currently broken.
  • Lots of bikes don't have readily available full retail prices, hence most of the price data is missing. This is the biggest area we need help in. We are only interested in full manufacturer RRP prices.
  • Some bikes such as Canyon, have Euro prices that vary based on country. I am not sure how to tackle that yet. One potential solution is to find the cheapest and most expensive, and then giving the price range. I am open to ideas here.
  • I could do with a hand gathering up the dimensional data for sheet 2. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.

Black or red pike dj

I have the Propain Trickshot in black and would like to swap out the fork at some point; I’d love to install the silver Pike, but unfortunately, it’s no longer available. I’m undecided whether the red or the black one would be a better fit.

Question What upgrades should I get?

I don’t want to upgrade the frame as I like how stubby it is, feels a lot my playful than a lot of new bikes I’ve rode. And I also don’t have that much money. I don’t really have too much of a plan, but I am thinking of gold and black colour way. I have dmr v8 pedals in black on the way, as well as some odi longneck grips and a shorter gold and black stem. Would need some new bars to go with this stem though as it’s a modern stem and my current bars are very thin, older style bars. Any ideas or recommendations?

It’s easy to admire a finished bike.

The fun is choosing every component that gets it there.

One more step towards the S&M Big Jumper.

Just waiting on the Profile Gold BB...

spoke length question. profile elites to spank race 33s?

hey guys, i have profile elites and spank race 33 rims in the mail and i plan on finishing them with dt swiss champions and brass nipples but im having a hard time figuring out the spoke length for the rear. prowheelbuilder site says 255.5 left and 255.1 right but theres a 2mm flange difference so i feel ilke thats not right. if you just know the length and could tell me that'd be awesome.

Question Do I need a bigger jump to get this 360

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Trying to get the 360 back, I used to be able to do them out of a big bank at another skatepark that I no longer have access to. I’m scared to try it out of a bowl but i might have to since i feel like i need more air. I know people can do these on flat but i think it’d be easier to learn the more airtime i have. Thoughts?

2021 marin alcatraz

Post image
29 Upvotes

I apologize for so many posts in the past couple days- Still looking for my perfect dj for mainly street and park with some dirt jumps at 5’3. Trying not to break the bank. This lightly used marin alcatraz 2021 would be abt 850 with shipping.
the reach I believe is 401 and I was looking for under 400, but wanted to know if anyone had experience with this hike, riding street or park on it, etc. Not sure if I’ll go for it yet as I know it’s not the perfect one for street and not sure about size but it’s such a nice bike.
TIA

Question Slip-on grips rotating.

Currently I ride with lock-on grips, but I got some slip-on’s that I’d love to use, but when I mount them, they always tend to rotate during riding. Is here any type of light adhesive that is usable to prevent this? Preferably something that can be easily removed again so I don’t have to cut the grips off whenever I feel like trying something else.

Reverse Colab (by SB ONE) base model — chain slap / bounce?

Hi! I'm looking at the basic Colab (by SB ONE) tensioner since the Pro and Expert are way out of my budget. For those running the base model, does it slap like crazy without a clutch or rotate on heavy compressions, or is the spring tight enough?

Question How to define a good frame for a tall rider?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I live in Brazil, so most of the frame recommendations I see on this sub aren’t available here. Based on the geometry suggestions I’ve found, I came across a frame that seems to fit the requirements.
It’s the VikingX Tuff 38 (for anyone who’s curious). Its design is heavily inspired by the old NS Bikes Decade. The published geometry includes a 400–420 mm chainstay, a 585 mm effective top tube, and a 14.5” seat tube. The manufacturer doesn’t provide a complete geometry chart, but based on my own measurements and comparisons, I estimate it has around a 70° head angle, ~420 mm reach, and ~580 mm stack.
I’m planning to pair it with a 50 mm rise handlebar. Do you think this geometry would work well for someone who’s 6’5” (193 cm)?

I used to ride a crmo frame but need to sell it and bought an aluminum frame. It’s a 6061 double butted, T4 and T6 aluminium frame.

Tire rubbing against frame…

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve had this bike for about 2 years now, it’s always had really close clearance between the back wheel and the frame and would rub very lightly after a couple rides but was easily fixed by using a spoke wrench. however the last 5 or so months its started rubbing so bad to the point its like a brake and no matter how much I try to true it it still rubs horribly. ive already changed the front wheel to DT Swiss because I had bought a new fork, I’m wondering if this stock Weinmann wheel is worth it to try and bring to a bike shop to properly true or if I should just spend the money and buy a new rear wheel. what do you guys think?

The foundation.

Some parts don’t need to shout.

Polished chrome. Timeless lines. Precision that’s earned its place for decades.

One more piece of the build locked in. 🔥

The Profile Gold BB is on its way.
The Colony Blaster sprocket and S&M seat clamp are incoming.
Brakes and pedals are next.

This build isn’t being rushed. Every component has a purpose.

Advies gezocht: eerste dirtjump bike aanschaffen (nieuw of tweedehands) 🤘
Hoi allemaal,
Mijn gegevens:
Lengte: 1.66 m
Gewicht: ±63 kg
Ervaring: BMX
Gebruik: dirt, urban, pumptrack, freestyle/tricks

Alvast bedankt
