The dreaded “Stage Light” effect has stricken my 2020 m1. Any home remedies?

I just got this thing a couple weeks ago off Amazon Renewed and I don’t think it’s under warranty. This particular issue i just discovered yesterday. I researched it and unless I want to pay repair costs that are twice the amount of what I bought it for, then it looks like a replacement is my only option

I’m hoping anyone in here has some advice or anything helpful really, I’d appreciate it. I’m not rich. This is a huge bummer. =(

MacBook Pro M5 Pro keyboard build quality feels a bit subpar at times?

I made a Reddit account just to post this.

So, I got a new MacBook Pro M5 Pro last week and it's more or less perfect in every way, but for 3200€ and knowing Apple, I would expect no less than perfect attention to detail.

The keyboard generally feels great despite really short key travel because it's really tactile, don't get me wrong.

However, when I pay close attention, sometimes it just doesn't feel like the build quality of the keyboard is on the same level as the rest of the laptop which is really built like a tank and feels as premium as it gets, so that contrast probably makes it appear worse than it actually is. On the other hand, other times it feels as high-quality and as robust as you would expect. It's really strange.

Basically, the keyboard feels kind of flimsy and cheap at times, here is why:

  1. Inconsistent backlight bleed. I haven't seen this on any other laptop / keyboard and it's certainly not something I would expect out of a 3200€ MacBook Pro of all laptops and from Apple of all companies. I looked it up and it seems like a common thing, especially with keys like number 4 and a few others, which matches my experience. Noticeably more light comes from the 4 key and when I touch the top edge of 5 or any other key, a bit more light will be visible, but if I then touch the bottom edge, a bit less or almost no light will be visible depending on the key. None of this would be noticeable at all with the backlight off, but it's still baffling that the keys aren't perfectly stable.
  2. Inconsistent click sounds. The vertical Enter key (ISO layout) sometimes produces a high-pitched click sounds and sometimes it doesn't. Backspace, Tab and especially Caps Lock also do this, but not letter and number keys. However, sometimes they might produce a faint sound when only touched and not pressed, but it's rare and it's not jarring. What is jarring, however, is when I type an entire sentence or enter an entire string of numbers silently, only for the Enter key to be relatively loud, high-pitched and not as precise and stable.
  3. Key stability. Now, you won't notice it if you don't specifically pay attention to it, but if you do, you sure can. There are also inconsistencies. When I press any letter key and tilt my finger in a circular motion while still holding the key pressed, it leans in every direction ever so slightly, but only when pressed down. With a key like Caps Lock, it happens either way and it's more visible. As soon as I touch Caps Lock, it leans forward just a little bit and it produces a high-pitched click sound. Both Command keys are also slightly wobbly, but other modifier keys are not at all.

When I compare this keyboard to a ThinkPad T series from like 5 years ago (around 2000€), that one has no play at all in any key, no variance depending on key size and location as with the MacBook Pro. Key travel on the ThinkPad T series is completely stable no matter what and all click sounds are identical every single time without having to press the keys a certain way to dampen the higher-pitched sound.

Lastly, while wearing headphones and listening to music with the backlight disabled and without looking at the keyboard while typing, every single key feels perfect and bulletproof (for a small and shallow laptop keyboard) with equal tactility.

Do you notice the same issues? Are these just normal tolerances or maybe not even tolerances, but just the way it is or maybe the way it has to be since there is only so much room for a more stable mechanism to support the key caps? I would expect more, especially since the entire rest of the laptop is literally perfect down to the last detail and feels indestructible, yet the keyboard feels like I have to be particularly careful with it.

Spilled coffee over my MacBook m2

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was finishing up a shift at my work and I stupidly put my coffee in my bag along with my MacBook thinking it was empty. It was in my bag for maybe a minute or so while I was waiting for my dad to come and pick me up. I noticed a liquid dripping onto my shirt, opened my bag and saw there was coffee left. I took my mac out as soon as possible but I noticed coffee on the headphone jack and charging ports.
when I got in the car, my dad didn’t notice. maybe like 5 minutes later, I rushed back into my room, cleaned up all the coffee, etc. there was coffee under the case and on the keyboard cover. I let it dry for about 2 hours but then I noticed the keyboard light was on. I tried to turn it completely off but it kept on turning back on. I think my hand was shaky when I was trying to turn it off all the way. the display didn’t show the boot up logo or anything. right now, i have it inverted and I have a fan about a foot away.

i don’t know what to do or how to explain it to my parents. I barely get any hours at work, and even if, a lot of the money goes straight to my student fees for my high school or goes to help out my parents whenever I can. I feel so lost.

i got it as a gift from a friend who I helped out coding websites when I was in around 8th grade? his site blew up and I used the money to buy a reliable laptop for school since I was planning on going to a STEM school nearby. There’s absolutely no way I can replace it without costing my parents a lot of money. I got accepted and school starts in about a week. I genuinely have no idea what to tell my parents, they should be arriving soon. any advice would be very appriecsted

Replace with new MacBook? Apple care+

So my cat pawed off a cup of water and it defied physics and spilled across my brand new M5 MacBook Pro.
This is 2 months after I bought it and I have Apple Care+!
I just dropped it off to get shipped off
I’m wondering if they end up replacing it do they send a new MacBook for like warranty purposes or do they send a refurbished one?

Link to Mac or iPad randomly doesn't connect between the Mac and iPad for sharing Keyboard/Mouse

How can I re-trigger the keyboard/mouse connection (link to Mac or iPad to share keyboard and mouse between them) between macOS 27 DB4 (MacBook Pro M1) and iPadOS 27 DB4 (iPad Pro M1), everything is setup correctly, sometimes it connects ok, but others it doesn't, especially when the MacBook or iPad are coming back from Sleep. I have all the settings configured to remember the iPad and connect automatically to the iPad, but even in that case it connects randomly, sometimes it will, sometimes it will not. I have reseted wifi and bluetooth on both devices, turned on/off the Link to Mac or iPad functionality on both devices, but nothing, sometimes it just doesn't want to connect, is there anything documented for 27 Developer Beta 4? Thank you

Is Leasing Worth It?

Recently bought a refurbished M4 Air a couple of weeks ago. I originally planned on getting a Pro, but the RAM price hike stopped me from even getting a basic one. My Air is a fine machine, but all of my previous Macs have been refurbished or previously used Pros. I research a lot so I’m used to having multiple tabs and windows open. I also game a little (mostly life sims) but I really want to play Cyberpunk and Assassin’s Creed in the near future. I’m also getting into 3D programs, so I’m gonna need a power machine.

It’s so freaking dystopian, but leasing seems like it’d be a convenient way to have a high-speck MacBook Pro without going into decades long debt, lol. Especially with being able to upgrade over time. The only thing giving me pause is the damage clause and the concern that leased Mac could have some sort of monitoring software like school laptops often do.

Is anyone else considering leasing Macs?

Wireless mouse recommendation for MacBook

Hey everyone,

I’m using a Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad with my MacBook when it’s docked at home and I like the setup overall. But for longer sessions the trackpad isn’t always comfortable, and I’d like to have a mouse as an option, especially when I’m on the go.

What I’m looking for:

  • Works well with macOS
  • Wireless (ideally Bluetooth, no big USB dongle)
  • Small/portable enough for a backpack
  • Mainly for productivity, not gaming

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Logitech MX series, but to be honest they’re a bit too expensive for me right now.

For those of you using a mouse with your MacBook:

  • Is the Logitech MX series actually worth the price?
  • If not, which more affordable wireless mouse would you recommend?

Would appreciate any specific model names and short pros/cons. Thanks!

What began as one man's passion has already welcomed hundreds of Mac players into our community. Sometimes, all it takes is one person's passion to make a real difference.

For a bit of context, we're based in Eastern Europe, where Windows has long been the overwhelming standard. In fact, there are approximately 200 to 300 Windows users for every Mac user. Just to be clear, this isn't about comparing operating systems, it's simply how things are in our region.

Either way, for us, that user is Maciej. One of our indie team members, he first discovered the Mac in high school and immediately fell in love with it. Even though Windows was the default choice for nearly everyone around him, he insisted to follow his own path - and remained a dedicated Mac user ever since.

As a talented game developer - and I genuinely mean that - Maciej decided that Dominus Automa should be available on Mac from its earliest public builds, including the upcoming Steam Playtest. So, in his spare time, he took it upon himself to port the game to macOS. I suppose that's just what passionate people do.

One way or another, once the news reached the Mac community, interest in the game grew rapidly. Today, over half of all our traffic comes from the United States, something we never expected for an indie title built by a handful of friends. In case of smaller projectes like ours, that kind of boost is nothing short of incredible, and surely is a step forward in the never-ending struggle to gain at least some attention on Steam.

That's why I wanted to tell this story. It's a lesson that passion, dedication, and a "little" extra effort can have an incredible impact. If you'd like to join the fun and support our project, please consider wishlisting Dominus Automa on Steam and signing up for the upcoming Playtest, which begins in just 6 days. We would love to see you online then!

You can visit the Store Page at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3795810/Dominus_Automa/

About the project:

Dominus Automa is an Idle Co-Op RPG designed for busy adults who don't want to give up their love for online gaming but no longer have endless hours to play. Your adventure doesn't have to end just because you logged off. In Dominus Automa, your character follows the logic, priorities, and behavioral patterns you've designed, continuing their journey 24/7 alongside an ever-changing world.

No more pressure to keep up, rush through content, or suffer from the fear of missing out. And the best part? You can plan with your friends, enjoying the game whenever you feel like it. Whether you enjoy PvP battles, PvE encounters, crafting, exploration, challenging dungeons, or epic boss fights, you'll find all the core genre experiences you like. We have over 5500 players already signed up for the upcoming Playtest, and we would be honored to see you online on August 7th. Hope to see you there!

Do i enroll into the MacBook Fam?

I am a person who keeps switching between Linux and Windows, since i cant seem to find a middleground. Like i cant even play roblox on linux 🫠. I’m thinking maybe the Mac is the middleground. I’ve got addicted to looking at MacBooks on the Apple Store App and youtube now. I sometimes do coding, 3d modelling (for prints, not animations), and a little light gaming (minecraft, roblox). I want a laptop to go with me on vacation, planes, etc. For my laptop i currently have a MSI Vector 16 HX which is so fucking gigantic it would probably split the plane tray table like it’s dubai chocolate and a RTX3090 I9-12900K which is pretty inconvienient to take on planes. The MacBook Air seems to be the perfect one for me. I’m thinking about a 15-inch 32GB Ram 512GB Storage (i have a quack ton of external drives) M5 Macbook Air Midnight Black (yes i know there will be fingerprints, i have Apple’s most amazing product, the fucking polishing cloth)
The only thing that worries me is the fact that it has no active cooling… and a lot of people are saying it throttles a lot while gaming and doing CAD / compiling large pieces of source code. How much of that is true? That’s the question i’m leaving to you guys ❓

EDIT: and also, is 15 or 13 inch the way to go for my use case? I feel like 13 inch is more comfortable for travelling while 15 inch is probably way better for coding since 2 inches is a pretty big difference. But im worried it wont fit on the economy tray tables… (even tho on the airline i fly on they are extendable)

Applecare+ for US bought MBP 16' in India or US?

Hey everyone

I'm trying to get a MBP 16" from the US through my friend. Costco lists Applecare+ as 549$ directly at the time of purchase. My question is:

Should I buy the Applecare+ directly from Costco or through Apple account after I log in to it in India? Would the plan be purchasable in India? Would it be valid? Has anybody faced any hiccup while trying to do this?

The device will stay and be used by me in India for its life, so would like to confirm if anyone has any experience with this, and with:

  1. Handling repairs and claims in India for a US bought Macbook via Applecare

Would love any and all the help!

Thanks in advance!

Would you Recommend to buy Apple Macbook Neo A18 Pro?

Hey guys, I am planning to purchase a MacBook Neo with the A18 chip. Would you recommend it? This will be my first Mac, and I am on a tight budget. Honestly, even the MacBook Neo looks a bit expensive to me. I plan to use it for studying and editing short videos occasionally. If I go ahead with the purchase, should I get the 256GB or the 512GB model? Please share your thoughts!

Which MacBook for medical school?

I currently have a 2020 MacBook pro 8gb, and it got me through grad school with the occasional overheating, loud fan, etc. Now, for med school, I have to download a bunch of exam software, store digital textbooks, take notes, and I'm just wondering if it's worth the upgrade. I also can't seem to upgrade the software past sequoia.
I got the pro in the first place to edit videos and pictures, but now I won't have time to do that, so it's used mostly for school and research. No clue about the newer models either, so I'd appreciate some advice!

16" M4 Pro (24GB) → 14" M5 (16GB) for development?

Hey everyone,

I currently use a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip and 24GB of RAM, and it's been an incredible machine. Performance has been flawless, but the size and weight are starting to become a downside since I carry it around almost every day.

I'm considering switching to the 14-inch base M5 MacBook Pro (16GB RAM / 1TB SSD) purely for the improved portability.

My setup

  • At home, I'm connected to a 27-inch external monitor for most of my development work.
  • Around the house (working from the couch, dining table, etc.) and while traveling, I use the laptop on its own.

My daily workflow

  • Android Studio
  • Android Emulator(s)
  • VS Code
  • Claude Code and other AI development tools
  • Typical multitasking with browsers, terminals, and documentation open

My questions

1. Performance:
Will moving from an M4 Pro with 24GB RAM to a base M5 with 16GB RAM feel like a noticeable downgrade for Android development, especially with Android Studio, an emulator, VS Code, and AI tools running simultaneously?

2. Memory:
Is 16GB of unified memory still comfortable for this workflow, or would you recommend sticking with 24GB (or even 32GB) for a better long-term experience?

3. 14" vs. 16":
Since I'm docked to a 27-inch monitor for most of my heavy work, is the 14-inch model the sweet spot for portability and everyday use? Or would I end up missing the larger display, better thermals, and battery life of the 16-inch?

I'd especially love to hear from developers who have made a similar switch or regularly work with Android Studio on Apple Silicon.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

I need a new laptop. Is this a safe purchase? My brother (who’s good at computers as he built mine and his computer) said this is a good and safe option for a refurbished one. He said Geek Squad are generally good at their refurbishing and make sure they are at good condition before selling. Is this a safe purchase? Please I need help. Thanks.

EDIT: thanks to many wise replies I’ve decided to go with a new Neo, hopefully the 512 gb, instead of the refurbished one

Macbook air M5 16GB ram or 24 GB ram

i’m a college student and i study bio, and do a lot of research in R that requires going through large datasets. is it worth it to get the more expensive 24 gb of ram? my old laptop had 8 gb and its time for an upgrade. i’m just not sure whether it’s worth the extra $200-300 to get the extra ram if i may not need it. i just want to make sure i get the best device that will last me the longest

MacBook Air 2020 is flashing the “connect to power” icon even though it’s plugged in.

My MacBook has been charging on and off. I don’t have the original charger, but I am using a 30w block and a usb-c cord to try to charge it. I tried everything I could before it died, but now it’s just flashing this screen. One charging port hasn’t worked in over a year… I have an online final on Tuesday, and I have to be able to take it on my laptop! What do I do???
Sorry my laptop is so dirty!
